Cavernous WIP Cast: Prince Mikah

Prince Mikah

He/Him // 25 // Capricorn // Primary Love Interest

Mikah, the slightly elder of the twin princes, has never quite fulfilled his royal role well.

Despite his lofty position, he prefers to fade into the background noise of his decadent lifestyle. He keeps to his creative hobbies instead; perfecting his penmanship, writing ballads, hand-spinning silk. Repetitive work helps him keep his mind off things - especially a long-past heartbreak which seems as though it will never stop haunting him.

Followed always by a soft malaise, Mikah remains nonetheless a connoisseur of the sensual, self-indulgent side of life. Now having come of age, he's obligated by tradition to select a spouse in a ritual tournament, and he's not sure what he dreads about it more - the disruption to his idle routine, or having to face the truth about whether or not he'll ever be able to fall in love again.

"Joanna stared, fiercely focused on the way Prince Mikah traced his hair behind his ear with long, delicate fingers. His dark silken hair fell to just between his chin and shoulders, revealing, as he pushed it back, a pair of glinting emerald pendant earrings. He seemed just as distracted as she was, gazing off at some fixed point in the corner of the ballroom. He was more diminutive than his brother - clean shaven, slender, and pale, with a sculpted jawline, dewy dark eyes, and heavy brow. Everything about him seemed soft to the touch, velveteen."

Into Touch Thursday

Let's talk about how our OCs express their affection:

0k I'm not gonna do everyone but I will do the characters I've posted intros for so far - will maybe revist in the future w/everyone else!

Joanna

Joanna's all about affection through physical touch - notorious for her reflex to always be reaching out and grabbing someones hand, or shoulder, or playfully nudging, or sitting in laps, or letting people sit in her lap, etc. The more casual touch - the more she likes you.

Carmen

Carmen is too shy to make a first move or prompt someone with too many questions, but when she's with someone she likes she'll never want the conversation to end, so she'll just chatter endlessly.

Irina

Irina uses physical touch as a way to leverage control in a situation moreso then she uses it to show actual affection - you'd know she's fond of you if she picks out a singular repetitive bit to neg you about on a regular basis. This is a habit she saves only for those closest to her.

Stacker

Stacker is a close listener, even if he seems a bit aloof - he shows affection by paying attention. He'll pick tiny details out of a conversation and remember them forever.

Mikah

Mikah fancies himself a poet ~ if he likes you? He'll tell you. Probably with a sonnet or a ballad. A hundred times a day. Effusively. With the most dramatic flattery.

Transactionally :/ Pritta's been more or less taught her whole life that sex is a means to an end, a way to get things from people, a way to leverage social power. It's not in the least bit casual to her, but her heart is not in it either.

👙 what kind of underwear do they wear, pretty or functional?

In this particular setting/culture, underthings are treated very lax and worn very sparsely. Mikah would, honestly usually go without, or with simple little linen drawstring undies. HOWEVER if he only knew about fancy lingerie.... boy would be all over it. He'd be in a matching lace set with garter and hose like every day.

Lie

When Tatiana returned, Joanna felt, somehow, that no time had passed at all. The “3:23 PM” time on her phone felt like a lie. They all thanked the owner of the hostel as they filed out to the van, but barely spoke to one another. Joanna chalked it up to the eight hour drive that lay ahead of them, and the feeling of dread it no-doubt inspired in them all.

Believe

Everyone turned to Stacker. He said nothing, only raised his eyebrows. “I believe him,” Carmen said, trying to sound firm. “Perfect, okay,” Irina said, throwing her arms up in defeat. No one said anything for a long, tense moment, each of them milling in private, aggravated consideration, trying not to make eye contact.

Jump

The gardens of Mikah’s estate lay wedged in the narrow grottos of the low, southernmost districts of the cavern. Carved into an immense face of rock, the home nestled beneath a cavern pocket, where a constellation of pointed calcite chandeliers hung down over the winding pathways, cobblestone walls, and bubbling fountains of his rooftop terrace. The pocketed, fungi-spotted ceiling was low enough here in places that one could jump to touch it.

Throw

“Yes, my lord,” Irina said, her eyes flashing with deviousness as he handed her her bell. The moment Kairus turned his attention away, Irina cast the tiniest flick of a confrontational glance towards Pritta and it took all Joanna had in her not to throw something across the table at her

Prologue & Chapter 1 Editing pass ~done!

So as promised, here’s some tidbits from early chapters while I go through my current Draft 1.5 editing pass on select chapters. 

Prologue (Mikah POV)

He loathed this more than anything, staying at the palace in his childhood room, pretending like things were the way they once had been. This place was a vault of memories. Everything here filled him with a sour nostalgia - the pillows, the rug, the gossamer curtains framing the balcony, the spiced aroma of the candles… 

As he turned over, his black silken hair fell over his face, and he remembered what it had felt like, the first time he’d shared this bed. The weight of another warm body beside him. How many years now had it been? Six? Seven? It seemed impossible. In three months he’d turn twenty-five and everything would change again. He understood why his father wanted him home now, more than ever, but it didn’t change the bitterness he felt in his chest each time he thought about what lay in store for him in the coming months.

Joanna couldn’t get over how much she envied Carmen, with her hair pulled into a sleek little top knot, her flawlessly matte almond-brown complexion, and her prim little vintage blouse tucked into high-waisted distressed jeans. Even her lipstick was perfect after thirteen hours in an airplane. Half the reason she’d agreed to come on this trip was the chance to spend some real work hours with Carmen finally. They’d all, apparently, had the same idea. 

Irina yanked a plastic folder out of her secondary bag, interrupting their hug, and held it aloft amidst the group - herself, Joanna, Carmen and Oliver - with some bravado. 

“The itinerary,” she declared, before opening it up to rattle off a long list of locations and times they were expected to hit in the next several days. Whether she wanted to admit it or not, the location of the cave site added complications to an otherwise run-of-the-mill geology expedition. But, these were problems for tomorrow.

Morning

Stacker came downstairs a short while later, and seemed surprised that she was up. He stopped on the last step, as if crossing the room would instigate a confrontation. 

“What?” Irina said, giving him a once over, “You got a problem?” “I do, it’s sitting on my floor wearing my shirt,” he retorted with a straight face, but still stepped carefully over their things to reach the storeroom behind the stairs. She let him off. There was no point in starting a fight this early in the morning.

Night

All night he’d held the little scrap of parchment which had broken his heart folded in his hand, but he hadn’t looked at it. He usually kept it in a little unassuming box in his study, beside his writing instruments and ink bottles, but had toyed with the idea of being rid of it. He’d bury it, maybe, or burn it, tear it up and toss it off the roof. Taking it up to the garden had felt unimaginably foolish before he was even halfway there. He knew he wouldn’t have the heart to destroy it, even as the words of it echoed in his head.

“Do not ever try to see me again.”

Sleep

Irina drifted to sleep quickly, her head in Joanna’s lap. After a while, Joanna turned off her lamp, allowing them to be enveloped by the dark completely. Her eyes strained pointlessly to adjust in the dark, illusory blooms of light dancing across her vision. The sand under her was fine and silky and almost warm to the touch and there was no sound aside from their shared, shallow breathing. The air was such a moderate temperature that for a moment it felt like she was in an ordinary room. She closed her eyes for a moment, and then opened them, half expecting to be back in that hostel in Tbilisi.

Awake

Irina seemed to calm down a bit after they had settled their sleeping arrangements, and promised that she would stay awake to keep an eye on Joanna, on account of her concussion, and to look out for Stacker. She was, of course, the first to fall asleep.

Oliver's playlist honestly has too many bangers I'll never be able to choose (It would probably be an AJR song tho! His playlist is almost entirely boy bands and is so so fun to listen to it's become my regular work commute playlist) and I haven't started putting together playlists for the remaining cast so here's this for now!

Ask time! How would your character(s) react to…

A cozy winter cabin with frosted windows, warm blankets and a comfy fireplace? Are they taking a rest from skiing or snowboarding, or are they just trying to ignore the snow and cold outside?

and/or

A bustling market, colourful products stacked in stalls and delicious smells of a variety of food luring one in? What section do they go to? Do they buy anything?

Ah! these are cute thank u <3 

So first one - Mikah, (were he not the prince of an underground kingdom and consequently unaware of the concept of precipitation or weather at all) would be such a fkn snow bunny so this one’s perfect for him. I think he would probably be too afraid of skiing, but he’d snowshoe! And sled! And make little snowmen and wear cozy sweaters and cute mittens and pom pom hats. Obsessed with hot cocoa and marshmallows. Extremely in his element, like, on a fur rug in front of a fireplace 👀

(Tati and Luka would also love this setting, but I think they embody more... bougie ski resort coffee-cocktail matching ski suits vacay vibes than the described cozy cabincore, so I think this one belongs to Mikah in the end.)

Of all the characters in Cavernous Irina is the Shopper™ so the second one will go to her. She’s really very magpie-esque in her collecting of little secret tokens, shiny things, flashy outfits, interesting rocks etc.. She’d immediately gravitate to the textiles, jewelry, antiques, and oddities. She’d probably pocket some little things without paying and then buy extra stuff she doesn’t want/need to even out her karma.
