Oliver wants to be everyone's friend, he just... has no idea how to be.

He's a paleontology field tech, museum gift shop connoisseur, video game trivia aficionado, and he's eager to increase his therapy sessions from twice monthly to once a week despite being too anxious to broach the subject with his therapist.

Sure, Oliver might be using his eagerness and sense of humor to conceal a profound, aching, loneliness… And sure, his social butterfly, infectious chatterbox nature might be a front for his near-constant rattled nerves... but there are worse coping mechanisms, right?

"She returned the gesture with a smile as he proudly held up the travel-sized tabletop rock saw that he had bragged to her about on the flight over. She watched him with amusement as he got back to assembling a folding table for his beloved saw, his various microscopes, his little color-coded sample trays. All the while he was wearing a gift-shop novelty t-shirt with a triceratops on it - photosensitive so that each time he stepped into the sun, the dinosaur turned bright green. The shirt was enormous on him, and hung off his slight frame. If not for his five-o’clock-shadow, he would have looked like a child in pajamas."

He's a sticker guy for sure. I think his dislike for pineapple pizza would probably throw people for a loop considering his taste generally, but it's a temperature thing for him. Fruit shouldn't be hot!!

Cavernous WIP (retroactive) Progress Update

So as promised, here’s some tidbits from early chapters while I go through my current Draft 1.5 editing pass on select chapters. 

Prologue (Mikah POV)

He loathed this more than anything, staying at the palace in his childhood room, pretending like things were the way they once had been. This place was a vault of memories. Everything here filled him with a sour nostalgia - the pillows, the rug, the gossamer curtains framing the balcony, the spiced aroma of the candles… 

As he turned over, his black silken hair fell over his face, and he remembered what it had felt like, the first time he’d shared this bed. The weight of another warm body beside him. How many years now had it been? Six? Seven? It seemed impossible. In three months he’d turn twenty-five and everything would change again. He understood why his father wanted him home now, more than ever, but it didn’t change the bitterness he felt in his chest each time he thought about what lay in store for him in the coming months.

Joanna couldn’t get over how much she envied Carmen, with her hair pulled into a sleek little top knot, her flawlessly matte almond-brown complexion, and her prim little vintage blouse tucked into high-waisted distressed jeans. Even her lipstick was perfect after thirteen hours in an airplane. Half the reason she’d agreed to come on this trip was the chance to spend some real work hours with Carmen finally. They’d all, apparently, had the same idea. 

Irina yanked a plastic folder out of her secondary bag, interrupting their hug, and held it aloft amidst the group - herself, Joanna, Carmen and Oliver - with some bravado. 

“The itinerary,” she declared, before opening it up to rattle off a long list of locations and times they were expected to hit in the next several days. Whether she wanted to admit it or not, the location of the cave site added complications to an otherwise run-of-the-mill geology expedition. But, these were problems for tomorrow.

Grass

Without any warning, nothing to mark the spot, a dark void appeared on a grass-covered knoll ahead of them. The cave entrance was shockingly unassuming; just a rocky hole in the ground, maybe five feet across and three feet wide. It was flush against the earth, something a hiker was liable to fall into if they weren’t paying close attention.

Futile Tea

“That’s so crazy, that’s uh, that’s cool,” Oliver said, eyes boring into Tatiana, urging her to go on. 

Joanna leaned forward surreptitiously, eager to try and catch Irina’s reaction to the conversation from the back seat. 

Tatiana continued, “A taxi driver from Gagra, for instance, told authorities that he bought iadonite from a street vendor. The man recommended he dissolve it in his tea. According to him, it resulted in night terrors, and then caused him to fluently understand both Russian and Kurdish the next day, despite not being able to speak or write either language.”

Sweet

A young woman strode over to find a seat at the table next to theirs, arm in arm with a young man who looked to be her sibling. They weren’t as statuesque as many of the others here were, but curvy and rosy-cheeked, both with thick dark curls and cat-like eyes done up with heavy kohl eyeliner. They were joined shortly by a tiny, elegant, dark-complexioned woman who amicably introduced herself as Evie in a voice as high and sweet as a wind-chime.

Fruit (less) lol

Luka said nothing for a long time, staring at the ground in front of him, tapping his heel, letting the sound of rustling leaves and insects take the lead. Finally, he reached into his pocket and pulled out his rumpled pack of cigarettes, offering one fruitlessly to Oliver first before lighting it for himself. The glow of the cigarette on Luka’s face revealed just how tired and bitter he really was.
