Love that enrichment doesn't have to be expensive.

This is Jo's favorite way to eat her kibbles. I have many toys made specificly for food enrichment but she never gets tired of the box. She literally goes in it and put her whole head under the tubes to reach the bottom lol.

The enrichment? An old cardboard box, cut up so she can step in it, and a shitton of recycling with some toys thrown in there.

Made her a new one, it's time for the old one to retire.

It makes a huge mess everytime but it does the job!

i think the most annoying part of dog food discourse is how many people will act as though proplan/hill’s/Royal canin diets aren’t extremely and prohibitively expensive and that THAT is the reason so many people look into healthy alternatives.

People complain about corn being in the first five ingredients on most of those feeds because, regardless of other factors here, that is not an expensive ingredient. But it makes up a large chunk of the dry food. So the dry food should be fairly affordable, right?

Oh… with tax you’re spending about $100 for one 45lb bag of food where the third ingredient is wheat and the fourth and fifth ingredients are corn.

Oh… well! It’s slightly cheaper! But the second ingredient is rice, third is wheat, fourth is corn, and then fifth is poultry byproduct. None of those are very expensive so this just must be the low end cost of dog food unfortunately. The vets recommend it so surely that means prices aren’t inflated, right?

Oh? This one has similar ingredients with the only real difference being no corn? And it’s half the price?? Well surely that’s just a fluke.

Oh. Oh no.

This one even has CORN in it and it’s $20 cheaper?? Wow!

Like listen at some point I don’t care if your dog food has the ichor of the gods in it, I’m not spending $100 every five days if there are cheaper options with just as many “good” ingredients in it. If you think I’m a dog abuser because I can’t afford this overpriced garbage, that’s too bad. I don’t care. My dogs are perfectly healthy with the food I give them. Great weight and great coat. People giving dog food recommendations that aren’t those top three hyper-expensive dog foods aren’t trying to epic own those dastardly vets half the time, but I really don’t blame the ones who do lose trust in vets when the only heartworm protection they recommend lately are expensive triple-action brands like Simparica Trio that costs $120+ as opposed to the other heartworm protections that are only about $40-$60 on average, which is still cheaper even if you add on a $20-$40 flea and tick protection separately, and only recommend dog food that costs $85+ a bag even if your dog doesn’t have specialized dietary needs.

Those top three foods are GREAT at making competent prescription diets, I don’t deny that. I do still have to criticize the pricing of those prescription diets though because I have spoken to DOZENS of people who had to pull their pets off of a prescription diet and struggle to find something comparable because they couldn’t afford the food, and that’s terrible! These are not poor companies! Purina, Royal Canin, and Hill’s can ABSOLUTELY afford to lower their prices to make their food accessible to people who need it for their animals but they don’t. They probably never will. Because at the core they are run by greedy corporations. It doesn’t matter how many good nutritionists are on board if the company is run by people who put profits over customers and make the food impossible for people to afford.

someone asked if i would share the dog cake recipe i use for birthdays. this is the one they all like the best! i have used lots of different canned foods with it, but i always make sivi’s with wellness core chicken with broccoli bc that’s his favorite. i made baz and renly’s with proplan essentials chicken and peas today bc it was on clearance at petco. i think i used canidae for ponzu’s. the dogs enjoyed them all. i also added shredded cheese for today’s cake.

i don’t do the fancy flour or coconut oil….just regular ole flour and butter.

the cake is very dense, not very cakey in texture. more similar to dog treat meat roll or the tuna cake recipe i’ve seen shared here.

this recipe makes a small bundt cake, 8x8 cake, cupcakes, or a loaf ime. cook time is about the same regardless, about 30-35 minutes.

i also like to add frosting. for that i just mix together low fat cream cheese, a lil bit of honey, and a glob of peanut butter. they like that a lot better than the yogurt frosting i’ve done in the past, and it’s way less runny too.

I can't mess with Haley and Bree's food because it's a prescription diet. Cinder is so picky that I don't want to change up her food because she's eating it so well right now. But I'm definitely thinking of switching Arthur to a Canadian-owned and manufactured food. He has done amazing on ProPlan, and I am nervous of going on anything that doesn't do feeding trials and research and such ... Ahhh I dunno. I'll have to look into more foods, but I haven't been overly impressed by the options I've looked at because they don't seem to have much science behind them. I am considering Farmina, which is not Canadian but not American either, but it is expensive and hard to find.

So many Canadian foods are just over-priced pea cereal 😭😭

Zoe's test results came back

She has eosinophilic granuloma complex.

Which is apparently a skin condition that was caused by either food allergies or an insect bite allergy making her immune system freak out and attack itself.

Unlike auto immune disease, it is not permanent and can be cured!!!!

Her tests show she is clear of any diseases/viral/bacterial, toxic plasmosis, and auto immune disease.

She does have food allergies still (and mild dust mite allergies).

She will need to go on a hypoallergenic diet. Sadly, I need to do a dry and wet food combo as wet is too pricey on its own. I chose Hill's Z/D. The other recommendations were Royal canin hypoallergenic and Purina Proplan HA (hypoallergenic), but they do not have wet food available for cats for some reason.

She's getting steroids for 3 months, this liquid medication (forgot name) for 6 months, and hopefully should beat it. There is a low risk of getting diabetes with the medication, but fingers crossed, she's fine.

She gets her stitches off in 10 days, then can be cone free aswell.

I'm so happy it's not permanent!!!!!!

the cat food I've given my cats for almost a decade was reformulated and I need to change foods. I figured I should see what is out there instead of just switching automatically to the new food they're making.

I'm curious what everyone else feeds their cats?

Mine get wet food (fancy feast right now) for about half their calories, but I give them dry as well because it helps clean their teeth. I'm thinking maybe Tiki cat or Purina Proplan might be good choices.

Guys, Sophie has had such a bad reaction to being fed Wholehearted dog food that I need to share about it. Don’t read on if you don’t want to hear about general health/gastrointestinal problems.

Now she’s old and I can conclusively prove anything so do with that what you will but. I bought a small bag of Wholehearted Beef and Brown Rice to get her through until her next bag of ProPlan got delivered around Thanksgiving. She ended up having morning bile pukes while on it, some with blood at times. She ended up completely losing her appetite which all went away when she started eating purely ProPlan again.

I had another lapse in food just this week and she ended up eating the Wholehearted- ProPlan blend for her before bed snack and breakfast. This morning(24hs since her last bit of Wholehearted) she was reluctant to eat, and then threw up her partially digested breakfast. The only tie I can tell between this stuff is the Wholehearted. So I’m really leary of it now and I want yall to know so you don’t have to risk an upset with your dog.
