NGL I sometimes worry I'm going to become the type of person you're talking about with software migration. I'm employed by a city in their local Museum and am thus a historian by trade, not usually something that has to deal with numbers and accounting. But, due to a series of unfortunate events that would take too long to explain, I have inherited the responsibility of not only dealing with the Museum's day to day finances (entering receipts, making sure POs get signed, tracking down receipts for gas purchases, etc.,) but also updating the Museum's portion of the city website. I dont know if I'm doing any of this right but it's getting done 😂😂
if you're aware your shit's fucked and you're documenting you're honestly fine. if we had a standard operating procedure document detailing the rote memorization process we could have just passed it along at the start and it would have made things clearer for the poor trainer. instead this person refuses to document because they think that will give them job security. this process exists entirely in their head. the trainer had no way of knowing the reality of the situation because they insisted on feigning competence until it was too late.

my biggest stressors right now are documents. the paperwork that I am paid to do, my personal noncompliance with administrative law, my "concerning" drawer full of unsorted (and mostly unopened) mail.
making sure I have the right documents. extracting dry hard facts (mostly numerical) from documents and putting them into other documents or software. following the proper procedures. I can never remember the proper procedures so it takes a very unpleasant kind of concentration to refer back. I have to take my mind off the grooves it wants to be on. (not that I'm special: how many minds really want to be on these? well, a fair amount of clerical workers', I guess...) talking to clients, writing emails, consulting with coworkers: I don't always love these tasks, but they don't take it off the grooves so violently.
I'm being stubborn, stupid, and a little crazy. I can be very efficient at paperwork. there are just so many other things I'd rather direct my energy towards. and yet this executive dysfunction burns up so much for no reason. I'm afraid it's either self-sabotage or a way of communicating something to others (and myself, who continues to say yes to things that don't suit me?). surely there are better ways.
if I stress myself out over these mindless problems, I am distracted from attending to the ones I really care about. if I really care about them, why am I turning minor distractions into huge obstacles?
I need to go to the BMV (and accept whatever fines I've accrued), file my taxes, do the work tasks I hate, figure out my finances, schedule overdue doctor appointments. these are the bugbears looming over me. ridiculous!!

Uhhhhhh. All systems engineers deal with is ultimately measured against people. Systems for people to use. That is what engineers does. So learn how to test for, use, control and manage people. Like variables in any other system. How will people read your code? What do you want them to do with the info you are writing? How will people use the GUI? Why? And how does this allow us to make a better GUI? How will people refactor this system when I leave the documentation like this? How will people interact with the delays of this system? How will people walk in this hallway? How will people see the sign? How will the engineers in this project work on things? How will we ensure people actually does the procedure correctly? Every single problem an engineer of any kind solves is deep down "How will people do people things with this system?"
Yet for some reason, many engineers considers this unimportant... Those are the bad engineers.

"Special unicorn" roles are generally similar in how difficult it is to find them combined with how useful they are to a dev team. Besides Technical Artist, there's also console architecture experts and Houdini VFX experts. While this list is by no means exhaustive, all three of these roles are in fields that are both difficult to master and extremely useful in most game dev teams.

Technical artists are the rare combination of being both technically minded and artistically minded at the same time. Somebody who is able to perform in both arenas at a professional level is rare, but the needs for people with those skills are enormous. Being able to build out and improve the tools and technology for other artists to create high quality visuals is in high demand because just about every team needs one.

A software engineer that specializes in game console architecture, for example, is incredibly useful to have on a team - every game on that platform will need optimization and having an expert direct those initiatives makes a big difference. However, game console architecture is both difficult to learn, lacks much public-facing documentation and material, and a constantly-moving target as firmware updates and such come. This also makes console architecture experts a "special unicorn" role.

Good-looking VFX are needed in most games. Doing really good VFX generally involves a good understanding of procedural generation and simulation. Many in the industry use Houdini to create the sort of VFX shots you see in TV, movies, and video games. However, Houdini is both incredibly powerful and difficult to master. Thus they also meet the criteria for "special unicorn".
