I'm so interested in all of your posts about mad liberation. I've never seen anything that puts my thoughts on the whole psych complex into words. I'm really curious to learn more about this. No pressure if not, but do you happen to know of any more comprehensive resources on this? Like books maybe?
Hi, I can definitely give you some recs! My list is a little bit UK centric because that's where I'm based but hopefully it's useful:
In terms of books:
I read 'Mad World: The Politics of Mental Health' by Micha Frazer-Carroll this summer and I can't recommend it enough.
I'm also making my way through 'Call Me Crazy: Stories from the Mad Movement' by Irit Shimrat, which I think is out of print but can be read as a PDF here (hopefully)
I've only dipped in and out of his books for my dissertation but Andrew Scull has written several well regarded books about the history of psychiatry ('Museums of Madness' is the one I've read bits of, 'Desperate Remedies' is on my TBR)
Some books on my TBR: 'The Protest Psychosis: How Schizophrenia Became a Black Disease' by Johnathan Metzl, 'Drop the Disorder!', 'Searching for a Rose Garden: Challenging Psychiatry, Fostering Mad Studies', 'Anatomy of an Epidemic' by Robert Whitaker
Some really good articles:
'Abolition Must Include Psychiatry' by Stella Akua Mensah
'Mad Activists: The Language We Use Reflects Our Desire for Change' by Lisa Archibold
'Not a naughty child: people’s experiences of service responses to self-injury' by Alison Faulkner and Rachel Rowan Olive
More resources!
The Campaign for Psychiatric Abolition - UK based, they have a lot of really great resources including an extensive recommended reading list, a Psych Abolition 101 Zine, and a resource for making a crisis support plan.
Asylum Magazine - again UK based, radical mental health magazine. To read full issues you need to subscribe (I recently paid for a subscription for a year of digital editions for £10, physical copies are a bit more) but the website has plenty of articles that you can read for free so well worth exploring.
Psych Survivor Archive - US based this time, there is so much on here, the Psych Survivor Zine is the main event but they also have a really great resource list (some of the links are dead though).
Mad in America - publish a lot of really interesting and impactful stuff on their website, I also really like their podcast (particularly recommend this episode about ECT, this one about esketamine, and this one about 'prolonged grief disorder'). There is also Mad in the UK and a number of other country specific sites that exist as part of their Mad in the World Network.
Folks to follow:
Dolly Sen - UK based artist who does and is doing a lot of cool stuff, notably at the moment they are the lead artist for the Birdsong From Inobservable Worlds project. This podcast episode they did is also great.
Nicole / lacey_art_ - another UK based artist, she wrote a poem about a bird recently that I can't stop thinking about (she does a lot of other cool things too).
Rachel Rowan Olive - brilliant and funny artist, she is also on instagram and etsy.
Luna Tic - artist and activist who has been involved with a lot of really brilliant stuff, including the successful StopSIM Coalition here in the UK which managed to bring an end to SIM.
There are so many more I could name and so many more things I could recommend but this post is already so long! I really hope it was helpful. I started trying to be brief and then gave up but I did cut out a fiction and literature recs section because I thought that was overkill lmao. Thank you for giving me an excuse to make this list I had a great time.
Learning about the Mad and psych survivor movements has been so transformative and empowering for me and I could honestly talk about it all day. Please do feel free to send me a message if you want to chat about it more!

Reminder #6176872: Eugenie is Trash by u/Common_Echo6265
Reminder #6176872: Eugenie is Trash As part of promotion for her podcast, Eugenie's team briefed the Independent. It's a doozy, but confirms what we've known all along - Eug is trash. The article goes on & on (literally multiple nauseating paragraphs) about her closeness w/H&M and how M, in particular, inspires her. Hate to break it to you Eug, but even Independent readers who might like H&M won't look past your father and give your podcast (which ironically is about sex trafficking) a listen. The article also confirms that H&M did meet up w/Eug in Portugal. It goes on to ludicrously claim that she may be the one to bring H&M back in the fold. Charles & William DGAF what Eug thinks about anything, let alone H&M. The article concludes w/Eug indulging in H&M's favorite pastime of manifesting, suggesting that she's going to be promoted to working royal. Charles & William have briefed multiple broadsheets since the Queen's passing that there won't be any additional working royals. Even if that changes, Eug - or frankly Bea - still won't be. I know folks here like Bea, but Bea's unpopular in the UK w/ratings lower than Camilla's and even Eug's (likely due to her instrumental role in Andy's trainwreck interview). She also partakes in sketchy shit. For example, the Times published an expose after their weddings showing how both she & Eug accepted "donations" from suspect folks. There wasn't much fuss since they're non-working royals, but that'd change the moment they became working royals. Charles has never wanted either of them to be working royals, so I highly doubt he'll change his mind w/all these red flags. Most infuriating/laughable bits (from https://ift.tt/mBIwz3o remains extremely close to the couple [H&M], despite their very public rift with the rest of the royals; the two families spent time together in Portugal following the Invictus Games in September. She has remained steadfast in her support of the pair since they quit royal life and moved to California, visiting them there several times and even appearing in the background of their Netflix documentary. It’s often speculated that if anyone can bring them back into the fold, it’s her.Eugenie is known to admire the humanitarian work Meghan and Harry have continued despite no longer being working royals. Their riposte of “Service is universal” when they were stripped of their titles may have been viewed by many as disrespectful, but for Eugenie, it appears to resonate.Ironically, Eugenie’s hard work to carve her own niche may be paying off in a way she didn’t expect: speculation is mounting that, with the number of working royals dwindling and plenty of engagements still to be done, she and Beatrice may be now be called upon to step up. How she will navigate the next chapter – combining being a “spare” and getting on with her own life and passion projects, with a more official royal role – will be interesting to watch. It is a fine balance neither Harry nor Meghan managed to achieve, but Eugenie could yet emerge as a significant power princess for the House of Windsor. post link: https://ift.tt/SlLFfzg author: Common_Echo6265 submitted: October 21, 2023 at 08:51PM via SaintMeghanMarkle on Reddit

Hi DD. I saw a while ago you posted your wedding announcement to Mr. Morwood (which I only realized when I double checked the spelling to send this ask is actually "Morwood" - he has been "Peter Wormwood" in my head forever) and the little magazine blurb said you were planning on a tri-coastal marriage. I wanted to know how that worked out and if you have any advice, bc I have a partner and all our friends and family on the west coast USA, and a girlfriend and all her friends and family in the UK, and it feels really hard, logistically and emotionally, to envision a future together with the tug of so much distance.
PS the Young Wizards have a very special place in my heart, thank you
You're very welcome!
Re the tricoastal lifestyle: We did it until we got bored with managing the logistics of it (which, frankly, was pretty quickly). The East Coast part of it, in any case, went obsolete with some speed when I realized that I was more or less immediately going to need to be mostly-on-the-West-Coast for work on Dinosaucers. This being the case, I gave up my apartment in Philly, and P. and I spent the next six months or so in LA. Then, when Dinosaucers was done, we headed back to Europe -- partly for P's sister's wedding, and partly for what turned into a fairly prolonged stay in England and Scotland—wandering around the landscape and hauling our (generally) very non-portable computers with us. (It was after all 1986/7, and there wasn't much in the way of "portable" hardware that wasn't an Osborne or Kaypro or something similar. ...Though I did write almost the entirety of Star Trek: The Kobayashi Alternative on a Radio Shack TRS-80 Model 100.)
We spent a fair amount of time residing in pubs (when we were between writing projects: like this one, and this one, and this one...) and in holiday cottages (when we weren't). I got very expert at wiring 1200-baud modems into half-timbered walls. I was nearly the first person to storyedit a US animated series from a different continent--via MCI Mail, ffs...!!)... but unfortunately the sponsor fell out of the deal for some reason; so there's a notch I never got to make in my belt. ...Anyway, we spent an autumn and winter in Scotland, in a cottage buried inside a castle wall (this castle, whose master was a charming guy—the family have since sold it on), and then in the spring decided it was time to find a place to sit still for a while. The only issue was to decide where.
Immigration to the US quickly fell off the table due to the irrationalities of the US Immigration Service. At this point in time it may sound bizarre, but UK Immigration was acting a lot more sanely (at least as far as allowing Americans to have "settled status"), so we got me as legal as it was possible for me to be without having been married to Peter for a lot longer, and spent the next six months wandering around and considering our options. Finally we decided that Ireland looked like the best fit for us, so we handled the necessary formalities and settled here. Five years after marrying Peter I became an EU national (as did he: due to the unique circumstances of his birth in Northern Ireland he was entitled to both UK and Irish nationality), and Ireland became our permanent home. I haven't resided in the US since I left in the late 80s.
...I don't know that I'm best positioned to offer advice on how to make such living arrangements work, especially in terms of friends and family, as everybody's personal circumstances are different. In our business we've fortunately often been in a position to visit the US long enough for conventions and so forth to see friends there, and catch up on how things are. I have no living close relations in the US, and so haven’t needed to be returning to visit settled family. Peter’s in a generally similar state.
But if I did have family groupings in the US who wanted to see me at something-like-regular intervals, I’d take a hard look at where they were located, and how near they were to the easiest and least expensive gateway to whatever other continent had my interest... and what it would cost to get back and forth on a regular basis. The other important metric to consider is how such travel is going to impact on your significant other(s).
...In any case, we’re fortunate in that we live in a time when face-to-face communication with your loved ones doesn’t have to be physical. There was at least one point where Peter said to me, absolutely seriously, “We’ve got to get married Real Soon Now, because the phone bills are going to kill me. ...Possibly even before my Mum does.”
Hope this has even vaguely helped! :)

United Kingdom wants to accelerate the development of the future Tempest fighter
UK scientists, engineers and innovators collaborate to accelerate the future air power capacity of combat aircraft
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 01/12/2023 - 11:00am in Military
The UK's leading combat airlines and the Ministry of Defense conducted research with leading scientists in machine learning, artificial intelligence, data science and computing to support software development for a next-generation jet fighter.
Tempest will be part of the UK's future combat air system (FCAS) and was designed to be a supersonic poaching equipped with pioneering technologies, including integrated state-of-the-art detection and protection capabilities. These capabilities will be provided, in part, by millions of lines of code in aircraft, with many more lines of code also present in ground systems. This means that Tempest's software needs to be more robust and resilient than that of its potential opponents.
The collaboration provided valuable information about the software requirements, design, delivery, operation, speed of updates and maintenance for both the fighter and the training systems that pilots and maintainers will use to operate and support the aircraft.
Tumblr media
Outsmart Insight, a deep technology intelligence company, and Oxford Creativity, a group that offers a systematic approach to innovation and creative problem solving, have conducted targeted research with scientists, engineers and academics. The research addressed the most challenging problems faced by software development over the several decades of expected life of the program: flexible ways to manage computational resources; the role of reliable artificial intelligence; software reuse; and increasing software reliability.
Air Commodore Martin Lowe, Director of the FCAS Program for the UK Ministry of Defense, said: “Software is critical to Tempest because the future operating environment requires adaptability, including frequent software updates. But the software also poses a great risk of delivery. Recent history shows the dangers that arise when software is poorly done and the advantages of doing it well. The advantages are so significant that, in terms of operational capacity, the people who provide the software are as important as the people who maintain the aircraft or the pilots who fly them.
Tumblr media
"It's great to see the enthusiasm and optimism that Outsmart Insight and Oxford Creativity brought to this study. This gives us greater confidence that we can take advantage of the opportunities offered by software-based advances in the program. This project also showed the value of collaborating in research with important organizations and individuals, both in academia and in industry."
Based on the findings, Team Tempest partners commissioned follow-up research aimed at the UK academy, which aims to support more robust software development, which can be hosted in a more resilient way. This work supports the program's vision for a modern, efficient, safe and constantly improving software delivery ecosystem.
Tumblr media
Tempest should be in service by 2035. The program will provide significant economic benefits to the UK, helping to sustain and develop critical skills and ensure that the technical and industrial knowledge of hundreds of organizations across the UK remains at the forefront of advanced air combat systems for future generations.
