The Hills Melted
Psalm 97:3-5 A fire goeth before Him, and burneth up His enemies round about. His lightnings enlightened the world: the earth saw, and trembled. The hills melted like wax at the presence of the LORD, at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth. As things heat up in the Near East, many are predicting that this is the end times. Maybe. That has been predicted often down through the centuries…

DAILY SCRIPTURE READINGS (DSR) 📚 Group, Thu June 20th, 2024 ... Thursday of the Eleventh Week in Ordinary Time, Year B
Reading 1
---------
SIR 48:1-14
Like a fire there appeared the prophet Elijah
whose words were as a flaming furnace.
Their staff of bread he shattered,
in his zeal he reduced them to straits;
By the Lord’s word he shut up the heavens
and three times brought down fire.
How awesome are you, Elijah, in your wondrous deeds!
Whose glory is equal to yours?
You brought a dead man back to life
from the nether world, by the will of the LORD.
You sent kings down to destruction,
and easily broke their power into pieces.
You brought down nobles, from their beds of sickness.
You heard threats at Sinai,
at Horeb avenging judgments.
You anointed kings who should inflict vengeance,
and a prophet as your successor.
You were taken aloft in a whirlwind of fire,
in a chariot with fiery horses.
You were destined, it is written, in time to come
to put an end to wrath before the day of the LORD,
To turn back the hearts of fathers toward their sons,
and to re-establish the tribes of Jacob.
Blessed is he who shall have seen you
And who falls asleep in your friendship.
For we live only in our life,
but after death our name will not be such.
O Elijah, enveloped in the whirlwind!
Then Elisha, filled with the twofold portion of his spirit,
wrought many marvels by his mere word.
During his lifetime he feared no one,
nor was any man able to intimidate his will.
Nothing was beyond his power;
beneath him flesh was brought back into life.
In life he performed wonders,
and after death, marvelous deeds.
Responsorial Psalm
---------------
PS 97:1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7
R. (12a) Rejoice in the Lord, you just!
The LORD is king; let the earth rejoice;
let the many isles be glad.
Clouds and darkness are round about him,
justice and judgment are the foundation of his throne.
R. Rejoice in the Lord, you just!
Fire goes before him
and consumes his foes round about.
His lightnings illumine the world;
the earth sees and trembles.
R. Rejoice in the Lord, you just!
The mountains melt like wax before the LORD,
before the Lord of all the earth.
The heavens proclaim his justice,
and all peoples see his glory.
R. Rejoice in the Lord, you just!
All who worship graven things are put to shame,
who glory in the things of nought;
all gods are prostrate before him.
R. Rejoice in the Lord, you just!
Alleluia
---------
ROM 8:15BC
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
You have received a spirit of adoption as sons
through which we cry: Abba! Father!
R. Alleluia, alleluia.

MT 6:7-15
Jesus said to his disciples:
“In praying, do not babble like the pagans,
who think that they will be heard because of their many words.
Do not be like them.
Your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
“This is how you are to pray:
‘Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy Kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.’
“If you forgive others their transgressions,
your heavenly Father will forgive you.
But if you do not forgive others,
neither will your Father forgive your transgressions.”

FOCUS AND LITURGY OF THE WORD
The Lord’s Prayer, or the Our Father as my mother called it, has been a part of my prayer life for as long as I can remember.  She believed it was the most important prayer we offer to God.  It is also called “the summary of the whole gospel (CCC2761).” I understand St. Ignatius of Loyola suggested saying this prayer before beginning the Examen.  Some days, this prayer is my Examen.  Following St. Ignatius’ advice, I modify a few words to be drawn more deeply into a conversation with God.
Begin by settling into my private prayer space.
Step One – Relish my day.
Our Father – helps me to put down the busyness of my day, focusing my attention and bringing me into conversation with the One who loves me unconditionally.
Who is in heaven – I feel the tensions leave my body, mind, and soul as I visualize a place where humans live in harmony with each other and all of creation.  Psychologically, I slow down, easing into God’s space to be aware of God’s presence.
Step Two – Ask for God’s help.
Holy is your name – I ask the Holy One to reveal my day through God’s lens, trusting that Jesus will be with me to celebrate the blessings and offer comfort for the difficulties experienced.
Step Three – Review my day.
Your Kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven  – I notice the events of my day without judgment, such as:  When did I surrender to God’s agenda today, or did I think I am somehow in charge?   Do I trust God’s perfect plan will unfold at the “right time,” or did I lose hope thinking God might not be in charge?
Give us this day our daily bread – I notice the events of my day without judgment, such as: The  “bread” I freely receive each day (shelter, food, clothing, freedom, the Gospel message, etc.), and I reflect on how I serve (or failed to serve) those who struggle for “bread.” I ask God to provide “bread” that fills each person’s needs.
Step Four – Repent.
Forgive my sins – I ask forgiveness for the damage I caused in my relationships today, especially my relationship with God.  I consider how I am caring for the gift of life God has given me.  I ask, how did I care for God’s creation today?  I praise God for the gift of the day and ask forgiveness for all of my transgressions.

SAINT OF THE DAY
St Paulinus of Nola
(354 – June 22, 431)
Saint Paulinus of Nola’s Story
Anyone who is praised in the letters of six or seven saints undoubtedly must be of extraordinary character. Such a person was Paulinus of Nola, correspondent and friend of Saints Augustine, Jerome, Melania, Martin, Gregory and Ambrose.
Born near Bordeaux, he was the son of the Roman prefect of Gaul, who had extensive property in both Gaul and Italy. Paulinus became a distinguished lawyer, holding several public offices in the Roman Empire. With his Spanish wife, Therasia, he retired at an early age to a life of cultured leisure.
The two were baptized by the saintly bishop of Bordeaux and moved to Therasia’s estate in Spain. After many childless years, they had a son who died a week after birth. This occasioned their beginning a life of great austerity and charity, giving away most of their Spanish property. Possibly as a result of this great example, Paulinus was rather unexpectedly ordained a priest at Christmas by the bishop of Barcelona.
He and his wife then moved to Nola, near Naples. He had a great love for Saint Felix of Nola, and spent much effort in promoting devotion to this saint. Paulinus gave away most of his remaining property—to the consternation of his relatives—and continued his work for the poor. Supporting a host of debtors, the homeless and other needy people, he lived a monastic life in another part of his home. By popular demand he was made bishop of Nola and guided that diocese for 21 years.
Paulinus’ last years were saddened by the invasion of the Huns. Among his few writings is the earliest extant Christian wedding song. His liturgical feast is celebrated on June 22.
Reflection
----------
Many of us are tempted to “retire” early in life, after an initial burst of energy. Devotion to Christ and his work is waiting to be done all around us. Paulinus’ life had scarcely begun when he thought it was over, as he took his ease on that estate in Spain. “Man proposes, but God disposes.”

Psalms chapter 97
1 The LORD reigneth; let the earth rejoice; let the multitude of isles be glad thereof.
2 Clouds and darkness are round about him: righteousness and judgment are the habitation of his throne.
3 A fire goeth before him, and burneth up his enemies round about.
4 His lightnings enlightened the world: the earth saw, and trembled.
5 The hills melted like wax at the presence of the LORD, at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.
6 The heavens declare his righteousness, and all the people see his glory.
7 Confounded be all they that serve graven images, that boast themselves of idols: worship him, all ye gods.
8 Zion heard, and was glad; and the daughters of Judah rejoiced because of thy judgments, O LORD.
9 For thou, LORD, art high above all the earth: thou art exalted far above all gods.
10 Ye that love the LORD, hate evil: he preserveth the souls of his saints; he delivereth them out of the hand of the wicked.
11 Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart.
12 Rejoice in the LORD, ye righteous; and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness.

robot pronouns with mosscap and dex
[ID: a photo of a passage from a psalm for the wild-built by becky chambers, text reading:
Dex took note of Mosscap's phrasing. "So, it is correct, then? You wouldn't prefer they or--"
"Oh, no, no, no. Those sorts of words are for people. Robots are not people. We're machines, and machines are objects. Objects are its."
"I'd say you're more than just an object," Dex said.
The robot looked a touch offended. "I would never call you just an animal, Sibling Dex." It turned its gaze to the road, head held high. "We don't have to fall into the same category to be of equal value."

13th November >> Mass Readings (Except USA)
Thirty Third Sunday in Ordinary Time, Cycle C
(Liturgical Colour: Green)
First Reading
Malachi 3:19-20
For you the sun of righteousness will shine out.
The day is coming now, burning like a furnace; and all the arrogant and the evil-doers will be like stubble. The day that is coming is going to burn them up, says the Lord of Hosts, leaving them neither root nor stalk. But for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness will shine out with healing in its rays.
The Word of the Lord
R/ Thanks be to God.
Responsorial Psalm
Psalm 97(98):5-9
R/ The Lord comes to rule the peoples with fairness.
Sing psalms to the Lord with the harp    with the sound of music. With trumpets and the sound of the horn    acclaim the King, the Lord.
R/ The Lord comes to rule the peoples with fairness.
Let the sea and all within it, thunder;    the world, and all its peoples. Let the rivers clap their hands    and the hills ring out their joy    at the presence of the Lord.
R/ The Lord comes to rule the peoples with fairness.
For the Lord comes,    he comes to rule the earth. He will rule the world with justice    and the peoples with fairness.
R/ The Lord comes to rule the peoples with fairness.
Second Reading
2 Thessalonians 3:7-12
Do not let anyone have food if he refuses to work.
You know how you are supposed to imitate us: now we were not idle when we were with you, nor did we ever have our meals at anyone’s table without paying for them; no, we worked night and day, slaving and straining, so as not to be a burden on any of you. This was not because we had no right to be, but in order to make ourselves an example for you to follow.
We gave you a rule when we were with you: do not let anyone have any food if he refuses to do any work. Now we hear that there are some of you who are living in idleness, doing no work themselves but interfering with everyone else’s. In the Lord Jesus Christ, we order and call on people of this kind to go on quietly working and earning the food that they eat.
The Word of the Lord
R/ Thanks be to God.
Gospel Acclamation
Luke 21:36
Alleluia, alleluia! Stay awake, praying at all times for the strength to stand with confidence before the Son of Man. Alleluia!
Or:
Luke 21:28
Alleluia, alleluia! Stand erect, hold your heads high, because your liberation is near at hand. Alleluia!
Gospel
Luke 21:5-19
The destruction of the Temple foretold.
When some were talking about the Temple, remarking how it was adorned with fine stonework and votive offerings, Jesus said, ‘All these things you are staring at now – the time will come when not a single stone will be left on another: everything will be destroyed.’ And they put to him this question: ‘Master,’ they said ‘when will this happen, then, and what sign will there be that this is about to take place?’
‘Take care not to be deceived,’ he said ‘because many will come using my name and saying, “I am he” and, “The time is near at hand.” Refuse to join them. And when you hear of wars and revolutions, do not be frightened, for this is something that must happen but the end is not so soon.’ Then he said to them, ‘Nation will fight against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be great earthquakes and plagues and famines here and there; there will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven.
‘But before all this happens, men will seize you and persecute you; they will hand you over to the synagogues and to imprisonment, and bring you before kings and governors because of my name – and that will be your opportunity to bear witness. Keep this carefully in mind: you are not to prepare your defence, because I myself shall give you an eloquence and a wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to resist or contradict. You will be betrayed even by parents and brothers, relations and friends; and some of you will be put to death. You will be hated by all men on account of my name, but not a hair of your head will be lost. Your endurance will win you your lives.’
The Gospel of the Lord
R/ Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

A link to my personal reading of the Scriptures
for the 3rd of September 2024 with a paired chapter from each Testament (the First & the New Covenant) of the Bible
[The Book of Revelation, Chapter 3 • The Book of Deuteronomy, Chapter 32]
along with Today’s reading from the ancient books of Proverbs and Psalms with Proverbs 3 and Psalm 3 coinciding with the day of the month, accompanied by Psalm 76 for the 76th day of Astronomical Summer, and Psalm 97 for day 247 of the year (with the consummate book of 150 Psalms in its 2nd revolution this year)
A post by John Parsons:
Our Torah portion for this week, parashat Shoftim, begins: "Judges and officers you shall give to yourself (תִּתֶּן־לְךָ) in all your gates" (Deut. 16:18). In this connection some of the sages interpreted the word "gates" (שׁערים) to refer to our sense organs, for example, the "eye gate," the "ear gate," and so on. Likewise the Lord instructs us to write the words of Torah "upon the doors of our house and on our gates" (Deut. 6:9). Because we are naturally inclined to "spy after our hearts and eyes" (Num. 15:39), we are instructed to appoint "gatekeepers" to protect the sanctity of our heart and soul, as it says: “Above all else guard your heart, for from it flow the springs of life” (Prov. 4:23).
The Hebrew text for this verse is emphatic. We are to guard our hearts vigilantly, just as a prison guard or warden might keep watch over a prisoner. The phrase translated "above all else" literally means "more than anything that might be guarded" (mikkol mishmar), a construction used to intensify the command to exercise vigilance. Plainly put, this verse commands us to watch over our heart more than anything else.
And yet “the whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint” (Isa. 1:5). We understand how apt we are to go astray in our affections, and therefore the heart is easily divided, obstructed, and liable to failure... Despite its frailty, however, the heart determines totze'ot chayim, or the "springs" or “contours” of life. In the Tanakh, the word totza'ot is often used to refer to the borders of territories or the boundaries of a city. This verse is saying that from the heart of a person (lev) a "map" or "chart" to life is drawn. As the heart is either pure or corrupt, so will be the course of one's life... Purity of heart represents healing, which means being single-minded in our affections and attention before the LORD.
How you choose to guard your heart from inner corruption and hardness will determine the "road" of your life. Concerning this verse the Metzudos commentary says, “Above all – more than anything else – a person must be careful to guard his heart from improper thoughts, for one cannot contemplate using the heart – the very vortex of life – to harbor thoughts that are inimical to life.” Because the flesh is weak, we must be vigilant lest we become cynical, weary, and unfeelingly selfish. An unguarded heart soon becomes troubled, lonely, suspicious, and unstable. If, however, we keep ourselves from the obstruction of sin, we will experience the free flow of compassion, encouragement, and joy. The faithful heart is open - it believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things (1 Cor. 13:7).
"Judges and officers you shall give to yourself (תִּתֶּן־לְךָ) in all your gates." Note that that Torah states that you shall appoint these to yourself, stated in the singular, not in the plural, to suggest that it is your personal responsibility to guard your heart from negative influences. God considers it your duty to yield yourself as a vessel or “steward” of the kingdom of God (Rom. 6:13). We must regularly ask God to enlighten "the eyes of our heart" (τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς τῆς καρδίας ὑμῶν) according to His wisdom and power (i.e., truth revealed in Scripture), and to impart the power of the Holy Spirit to transform our desires and affections so that they conform to the character of the Messiah (Eph. 1:18).

Berakhot 10a: 30. "The One."
Tumblr media
The real reason we must safeguard the idea of the Mashiach is without it, we cannot daydream we will fall in love and stay that way forever. Once we are under the spell of that delusion and find the right person to swim with us, and he meets the requirements to be great like Alexander, then, the Mishnah says it is time to stop thinking about it and go.
30. He said to her: Give me your peace, I will grant my friend's and your friend's right, and I will issue a mana'i building from above. He said to her: A decree has already been passed on you. He said to her: Son of courage, finish your prophecy and go out!
"There are quite a few different words of the form manai, מן (mn) with comparable meanings that are spelled with the signature "mn" of the Proto-Indo-European root men-, meaning to think: μναομαι (mnaomai), to remember, hence words like mind, demonstrate, amnesty, mnemonic, monument, summon, and so on. "
The Value in Gematria is א'‎י‎הט‎‎, עיהת, ayahat, "To find and love one's friend with an everlasting love, and not like prostitution or just for reproduction."
"We are commanded to show love to aliens (Deuteronomy 10:19), to love YHWH with all our hearts, souls and might (Deuteronomy 6:5) and our neighbor as ourselves (Leviticus 19:18). God in return loves his people (Deuteronomy 4:37, Isaiah 43:4, Malachi 1:2), the gates of Zion (Psalm 87:2), righteousness and judgment (Psalm 33:5), and the temple (Malachi 2:11).
Our verb may also describe a drawing towards inanimate items or concepts: certain foods (Genesis 27:4), costly goods (Proverbs 21:17, Ecclesiastes 5:9) gifts (Isaiah 1:23), the Lord's commandments (Psalm 119:47) and Torah (Psalm 119:97), evil (Psalm 52:3), death (Proverbs 8:36), vanity (Psalm 4:2), cursing (Psalm 109:17), good (Amos 5:15), truth and peace (Zechariah 8:19), salvation (Psalm 40:16) and wisdom (Proverbs 29:3).
The participle can sometimes be translated as friend (Abraham was God's "friend"; 2 Chronicles 20:7, and king Hiram of Tyre was David's "friend"; 1 Kings 5:1) but often carries the connotation of professional love or prostitution (Lamentations 1:19, Ezekiel 16:33, Hosea 2:7). In Hebrew we can deploy the same word for these seemingly opposite contexts simply because the Hebrew word describes someone who draws near or concentrates on, rather than someone who feels something.
This verb comes with three similar derivatives:
The masculine noun אהב ('ahab), meaning love (Proverbs 5:18, Hosea 8:9 only).
The masculine noun אהב ('ohab), also meaning love (Proverbs 7:18, Hosea 9:10 only).
The feminine noun אהבה ('ahaba), also meaning love (Ecclesiastes 9:1, Song of Solomon 2:7, Hosea 11:4). This noun is the most common one of the three, and is the one used in the magnificent statement, "I have loved you with an everlasting love" (Jeremiah 31:3)."

Ephesians 5:11-14
[11]Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them;
[12]for it is disgraceful even to speak of the things which are done by them in secret.
[13]But all things become visible when they are exposed by the light, for everything that becomes visible is light.
[14]For this reason it says, "Awake, sleeper, And arise from the dead, And Christ will shine on you."
Psalms 97:10
[10]Hate evil, you who love the Lord, Who preserves the souls of His godly ones; He delivers them from the hand of the wicked.
Proverbs 8:13
[13]"The fear of the Lord is to hate evil; Pride and arrogance and the evil way And the perverted mouth, I hate.
Matthew 3:2
[2]"Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."

Behave Like a Christian
6 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith; 7 or ministry, let us use it in our ministering; he who teaches, in teaching; 8 he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.
9 Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good. 10 Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another; 11 not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; 12 rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer; 13 distributing to the needs of the saints, given to hospitality.
14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. 16 Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion.
17 Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. 18 If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. 19 Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. 20 Therefore
“If your enemy is hungry, feed him; If he is thirsty, give him a drink; For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head.”

Reading 1
SIR 48:1-14
Like a fire there appeared the prophet Elijah whose words were as a flaming furnace. Their staff of bread he shattered, in his zeal he reduced them to straits; By the Lord's word he shut up the heavens and three times brought down fire. How awesome are you, Elijah, in your wondrous deeds! Whose glory is equal to yours? You brought a dead man back to life from the nether world, by the will of the LORD. You sent kings down to destruction, and easily broke their power into pieces. You brought down nobles, from their beds of sickness. You heard threats at Sinai, at Horeb avenging judgments. You anointed kings who should inflict vengeance, and a prophet as your successor. You were taken aloft in a whirlwind of fire, in a chariot with fiery horses. You were destined, it is written, in time to come to put an end to wrath before the day of the LORD, To turn back the hearts of fathers toward their sons, and to re-establish the tribes of Jacob. Blessed is he who shall have seen you  And who falls asleep in your friendship. For we live only in our life, but after death our name will not be such. O Elijah, enveloped in the whirlwind! Then Elisha, filled with the twofold portion of his spirit, wrought many marvels by his mere word. During his lifetime he feared no one, nor was any man able to intimidate his will. Nothing was beyond his power; beneath him flesh was brought back into life. In life he performed wonders, and after death, marvelous deeds.
Responsorial Psalm
PS 97:1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7
R./ Rejoice in the Lord, you just!
The LORD is king; let the earth rejoice; let the many isles be glad. Clouds and darkness are round about him, justice and judgment are the foundation of his throne.  R./ Rejoice in the Lord, you just!
Fire goes before him and consumes his foes round about. His lightnings illumine the world; the earth sees and trembles. R./ Rejoice in the Lord, you just!
The mountains melt like wax before the LORD, before the Lord of all the earth. The heavens proclaim his justice, and all peoples see his glory. R./ Rejoice in the Lord, you just!
All who worship graven things are put to shame, who glory in the things of nought; all gods are prostrate before him. R./ Rejoice in the Lord, you just!
Gospel
MT 6:7-15
Jesus said to his disciples: "In praying, do not babble like the pagans, who think that they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them. Your Father knows what you need before you ask him. "This is how you are to pray: 'Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.' "If you forgive others their transgressions, your heavenly Father will forgive you. But if you do not forgive others, neither will your Father forgive your transgressions."
