I have cystic fibrosis which comes with fun clinic visits every three months (seriously, I’ve had one every three months since I was a baby) and I had one today. It’s still weird going with just my sister and I (my sister also has CF) and no parents, but I’ve been doing it since I moved out at 19 so logically I should be used to it by now.
Everything was good, my PFT’s (pulmonary lung function test) were good, my CF primarily affects my pancreas and digestive system (not counting the time between the ages of 13 to 17/18 where I was in the hospital every three months with a lung infection). I also had to get tested for cf-related diabetes (something I get done every year) which isn’t fun since I have to get poked twice and drink a really sugary liquid between draws, and then wait two hours to get labs drawn again. Those were the two highlights of this visit.
In about a year I’m transferring over to the adult side, something that scares me because I have to let go of a care team that has been with me since I was seven. They know me, know my history and struggles, and I see the same five people over and over again, so I’m not really looking forward to changing next year. It’s weird to think I’ve known these people for over half my life, and one day I will never see them again yet they’ve done so much for me. Maybe when the time comes I’ll make them each something (if it’s allowed) to thank them, even though I know they’re just doing their jobs it still means a lot to me.
I’ve been relatively lucky with my cf, something I’m very grateful for, and though I’ve still had my fair share of trauma my life has never been in danger. In the last decade they’ve come out with new drugs to treat it, called CFTR modulators, one of which I’m on (called Kalydeco). Cystic fibrosis is a rare genetic condition which causes the body to create thick, sticky mucus in the organs leading to things like pancreatic insufficiency and frequent lung and sinus infections, along with malnutrition often leading to the need of a feeding tube, it can also cause something called CFRD (CF related diabetes). Two people with cf cannot be within six feet of each other to prevent the spread of germs, leading to a sense of isolation (luckily online and virtual support groups exist).
The government does not fund the research for cf, and yet they’ve come a long way in the treatment of it. It took me a long time to accept the need for Kalydeco, something I’ve delved into plenty of times with my therapist, but I’m thankful for it. I’ve been able to gain around 20 pounds since starting it and get my g-tube (feeding tube) removed. I also haven’t been in the hospital in over a year and will likely never need sinus surgery again. Cf will never go away, but the life expectancy has gone way up since the creation of CFTR modulators and is no longer considered a terminal illness in people who are being born with it nowadays. I could go on and on about this disease but I won’t, I’ve explained it too many times to count, but what I want from this post is for at least one person to learn something.

Reference archived on our website (click to see more than 1,000 open-access covid studies! Daily updates!)
This is just a pilot study, so it's hard to tell if there will be therapeutics derived from this, but it's interesting to see spa treatments pitched for releaving long-covid symptoms. This is the 3rd or 4th study in this area I've seen. Just kinda neat.
Abstract Background The long-COVID syndrome is characterised by a plethora of symptoms. Given its social and economic impact, many studies have stressed the urgency of proposing innovative strategies other than hospital settings. In this double-blind randomised case-control trial, we investigate the effects of sulfur thermal water inhalations, rich in H2S, compared to distilled water inhalations on symptoms, inflammatory markers, nasal microbiome in long-COVID patients.
Methods 30 outpatients aged 18-75, with positive diagnosis for long-COVID were randomised in two groups undergoing 12 consecutive days of inhalations. The active Group (STW) received sulfur thermal water inhalations whereas the placebo group received inhalations of sterile distilled non-pyrogenic water (SDW). Each participant was tested prior treatment at day 1 (T0), after the inhalations at day 14 (T1) and at 3 months follow-up (T2). At each time point, blood tests, nasal swabs for microbiome sampling, pulmonary functionality tests (PFTs) and pro-inflammatory marker measure were performed.
Results The scores obtained in the administered tests (6MWT, Borg score, and SGRQ) at T0, showed a significant variation in STW group, at T1 and T2. Serum cytokine levels and other inflammatory biomarkers reported a statistically significant decrease. Some specific parameters of PFT's showed ameliorations in STW group only. Changes in the STW nasopharyngeal microbiota composition were noticed, especially from T0 to T2.
Conclusions Inhalations of sulfur thermal water exerted objective and subjective improvements on subjects affected by long-COVID. Significant reduction of inflammatory markers, dyspnea scores and quantitative and qualitative changes in the nasopharyngeal microbiome were also assessed.

06/24/23
today, I:
studied pulmonary function tests from 11pm (06/23) to 4am of today
skimmed through the presentation sent by our quiz bee adviser on pft (she had a personal matter today so we didn't do our usual practice)
officially withdrew my tutorials supposedly for this summer term
repainted our house's baseboards (context: we're moving houses and didn't want to leave this house feeling neglected and sad so we're repairing things we can do ourselves and leave it clean for a happy parting)
took minutes of the meeting for our research – we're currently working on our chapter 4 together with out data analytics prof as our statistician and he's taking really good care of us and our study. we'll be adding another statement of the problem bc he made a mistake on some data but is actually a very nice mistake. makes our study much better.
will be trying out the coffee jelly i made yesterday !! mama bought vanilla ice cream earlier and since i'm already going to eat late dinner prior to taking a liking on painting (got carried away), why not eat some good dessert 😋
a bit excited for tomorrow, i'll be painting more but this time at the other house for miscellaneous paint repairs. this "gap year" seems to be starting out great !! also feeling good today especially since painting was very therapeutic 😌 hope you all have a good night/morning/afternoon, i'll be winding down by watching a movie with my friends through discord 🫶

Monsoon Madness: How to Breathe Easy This Rainy Season with the Right Lung Care
The monsoon season brings a welcome break from the sweltering summer heat. The earthy smell of the first rain, lush greenery, and cooler winds create a magical atmosphere. But beneath this beauty lies a not-so-pleasant reality—an increase in respiratory illnesses. For those already struggling with lung conditions, this season can be particularly challenging. That’s why consulting a Lung Specialist in Vasanthnagar becomes more than just a precaution—it becomes a necessity.
Why Monsoon Triggers Respiratory Problems
While the rain clears the air of dust temporarily, it also raises humidity levels. This moisture becomes a breeding ground for mold, bacteria, and viruses. Moreover, allergens like pollen get trapped in the damp atmosphere, making it harder for people with asthma, bronchitis, or COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) to breathe easily.
During monsoons, you may also notice an uptick in flu, colds, sinus infections, and chest congestion. For individuals who already have compromised immune systems or a history of respiratory issues, these infections can quickly turn severe.
If you're experiencing persistent coughing, breathlessness, wheezing, or chest discomfort, it’s time to consult a Lung Specialist in Vasanthnagar before symptoms escalate.
Common Respiratory Issues During Monsoon
Let’s take a closer look at some of the most frequent respiratory concerns people face during the monsoon:
Asthma Flare-Ups: High humidity and mold spores can worsen asthma. Rainwater puddles and indoor dampness promote mold growth, one of the biggest asthma triggers.
Bronchitis: The moist air can irritate your airways, leading to inflammation. Chronic bronchitis sufferers may notice worsening coughs and mucus production.
Pneumonia: Bacterial and viral infections spread faster in humid conditions, and pneumonia becomes a common complication during the rainy season.
Tuberculosis: TB is a serious lung condition that can reactivate or worsen in damp and unhygienic living conditions, often seen during monsoons in urban areas.
Allergic Rhinitis: The mold and pollen can trigger allergic reactions like sneezing, watery eyes, and nasal congestion.
If you're facing any of these symptoms, scheduling a consultation with a Lung Specialist in Vasanthnagar can help with early diagnosis and effective treatment.
How a Lung Specialist Can Help
A Lung Specialist in Vasanthnagar can offer a personalized approach to treating your condition based on your medical history and environmental triggers. Here are a few services you can expect:
Pulmonary Function Tests (PFTs): To determine how well your lungs are working.
Chest X-rays or CT scans: To identify infections or structural lung issues.
Allergy Testing: To detect specific monsoon allergens.
Medication Management: Inhalers, steroids, or antibiotics adjusted as per seasonal needs.
Preventive Measures: Flu shots, pneumonia vaccines, and lifestyle advice.
Monsoon Care Tips for Healthy Lungs
Even if you’re not dealing with a chronic respiratory condition, it’s important to be cautious during monsoon. Follow these simple yet effective tips to protect your lungs:
Keep Your Surroundings Dry: Moisture is the enemy. Use dehumidifiers or silica gels to keep rooms dry and mold-free.
Wear a Mask Outdoors: Pollution levels may dip during rain, but allergens and bacteria are still airborne. A mask can prevent inhalation of harmful particles.
Avoid Getting Wet in Rain: It may sound fun, but getting drenched can reduce your body temperature and weaken immunity, leading to respiratory infections.
Steam Inhalation: A simple yet effective way to clear nasal passages and reduce congestion.
Keep Inhalers Handy: If you suffer from asthma or COPD, always carry your prescribed inhalers.
Stay Hydrated: Drink warm fluids to keep your respiratory tract moist and aid mucus drainage.
Consult a Lung Expert Regularly: Especially if you have pre-existing lung conditions. A Lung Specialist in Vasanthnagar can provide the right treatment plan to keep you safe all season.
Why Choose a Lung Specialist in Vasanthnagar?
Vasanthnagar is one of Bangalore’s prominent neighborhoods, known for its excellent medical facilities and accessibility. Choosing a Lung Specialist in Vasanthnagar ensures:
Quick Access to Emergency Care: Time is critical during respiratory distress.
Experienced Pulmonologists: The area is home to several top-rated lung specialists with years of experience.
Modern Diagnostic Tools: Clinics and hospitals here are equipped with state-of-the-art lung testing and imaging facilities.
Patient-Centered Care: You’ll find specialists who take time to understand your unique health profile and tailor treatments accordingly.
Real-Life Stories from Vasanthnagar
Let’s hear from people who benefited from visiting a Lung Specialist in Vasanthnagar:
Shalini, 42, School Teacher:
“Every monsoon, I would struggle with breathlessness and a recurring cold. This year, I visited a Lung Specialist in Vasanthnagar, and it changed everything. I got diagnosed with mild asthma, and with the right inhaler and medication, I haven’t had a single attack this season!”
Ramesh, 65, Retired Banker:
“I was recently diagnosed with COPD. My doctor, a reputed Lung Specialist in Vasanthnagar, helped me understand the condition and gave me tools to manage it effectively. I can breathe easier now, even during the dampest days.”
Conclusion: Don’t Let the Rain Drown Your Health
While monsoon brings romance, nostalgia, and relief, it also carries hidden threats to our respiratory health. Whether you're suffering from chronic lung conditions or just want to ensure a safe season, visiting a Lung Specialist in Vasanthnagar can make all the difference.
Don’t wait until that cough turns chronic or that breathlessness becomes unbearable. Prioritize your lung health this monsoon. Breathe easy, stay safe, and enjoy the rains without worry—because healthy lungs make for a happy life.

Need a Breathing Check? Book a Comprehensive Lung Test in Chennai Today
When was the last time you genuinely focused on your breathing? While many of us assume our breathing conditions for granted, problems with lung function can develop quietly, frequently going undetected until they become serious.Respiratory conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and even lung infections are on the rise, and early detection is key to preventing long-term damage.

What Is a Lung Function Test?
A lung function test, often referred to as a pulmonary function test (PFT), is a diagnosis technique that examines how effectively your lungs operate. This test measures various aspects of your lung health, including airflow, lung volume, and the ability of your lungs to transfer oxygen into the blood. By conducting these tests, healthcare professionals can detect breathing problems, lung diseases, and other issues early, allowing for timely intervention and treatment.
Why Should You Book a Lung Function Test in Chennai?
In a bustling city like Chennai, where pollution levels are high and lifestyle-related respiratory diseases are becoming increasingly common, booking a lung function test in Chennai can be a proactive step toward maintaining your health.
Here’s why you should consider getting tested:
Early Detection of Lung Issues: Respiratory conditions such as asthma or COPD often have subtle symptoms at first. A lung function test can catch these early warning signs before they progress to more serious conditions.
Tailored Treatment Plans: Once your lung test results are in, your doctor can create a personalized treatment plan, whether it's for managing chronic conditions or preventing further lung damage.
Peace of Mind: If you’ve been feeling short of breath or have a persistent cough, a lung function test can help rule out serious conditions, offering you peace of mind.
Monitor Existing Conditions: If you’ve been diagnosed with a lung-related condition, regular lung function tests can help monitor the progression and adjust treatment plans as needed.
