What Can I Do to Make My Puppy Stop Nipping My Hands?

We all love puppies. They are so cute and cuddly.  They are the closest thing to perpetual love machines that we could possibly imagine.  Because of that, we love to play with them. We pick them up, give them hugs, play with their little paws, give them kisses, and allow them to do just about anything they want.

It is so cute to watch them chase the ball that we have rolled under the chair at the far end of the room.  Seeing them bark at the leaves floating outside the back window never gets old.  Feeding them by hand and letting them lick our fingers is just the best.  Once they finally get their little bark, we find that so cute. They will bark at us, and we will make funny little whining sounds back at them. 

It is always so much fun to play hide and seek with them.  Well, it really isn’t “hide and seek”, it usually is “Where am I?, Where am I?, Where am I?”, and as soon as our puppy looks at us, we jump up and down and run off, hoping that they will chase us.

As long as we are having fun and mutually engaging with our little puppy, these are really fun activities.  The problem arises when we decide we are done and need to work on the computer, answer our phone, read a book, have dinner, or go to bed.  We turned our “off switch”, but nobody told our puppy to turn off their “off switch”.  On top of that, what were all the “things we were teaching our puppy” while we were mutually going nuts?

The answer is “Probably not all good stuff”.  Some of this “not all good stuff” is often nipping.

He was barely trying to whisper, his voice loud enough to earn several pointed looks from the people around you. You’d tried to put yourself at a distance from the rest of the class, to sit in a deserted corner of the near-empty lecture hall, but he wouldn’t have cared if you were in the first row. That was something you’d had to learn quickly about him – Kunikuzushi was shameless at the best of times, actively vitriolic at the worst. Your public humiliation wasn’t just a pleasant side-effect of his company, but an active goal he was striving towards during every minute you spent together.

“You don’t have to look so worried – if I was going to break up with you, you’d know.” You kept your eyes trained on the lecturer, your expression schooled to practiced disinterest, but his voice lulled like you’d broken into tears. You felt him shift that much closer to you – his thigh pressing into yours. “I just don’t think we spend enough time together. I know, I know, we’re both busy, but still. If I didn’t know better, I’d think you were avoiding me.”

You were. Just last week, you’d spent two hours locked in your bedroom closet – lights off and knees pulled into your chest – because Kuni had somehow gotten your address and decided it would be a good use of his time to loiter on your doorstep and refuse to leave until you came out. You planned your day-to-day schedule meticulously to make sure it would never bleed into his, went out of your way not to have to go where you knew he would be, but there was only so much you could do to get away from someone willing to blow off his classes and skip work just to spend the better part of a day sending you candid pictures from one of his countless burner phones. You could only be thankful he was too caught up in his own delusions to ever let his obsession turn violent. Lashing out at you for never acknowledging whatever relationship he thought you were in would be akin to admitting you didn’t have a relationship at all, he would never do that.

He took up your hand, his fingers soon intertwined with yours. You tried, weakly, to pull away from him, but he only let out a breathy chuckle, his head soon resting on your shoulder. Compared to how he’d acted when you first met – standoffish, bristly, constantly on the verge of losing his temper – he was practically a touch-starved puppy, happy so long as he could sit in your lap and bask in your attention, positive or negative.

“I don’t know why I can’t just come out and say it.” Another laugh, a playful squeeze to your hand. “I think we should move in together.”

You snapped in his direction, your knees jolting against the bottom of your desk and earning a few pointed glares. After mouthing a sheepish apology, you dug your nails into the back of his hand, keeping your voice as low as possible. “Kuni, I— I don’t think that’s—”

“Don’t think it’s practical?” Predictably, he cut you off. “I knew you’d say that. If it wasn’t for me, you wouldn’t be able to find the nerve to leave your apartment.” You felt his smile against the dip of your shoulder, then the crook of your neck as he nuzzled against you. “I’ve already handled it. By the time that moron—“ He rolled his eyes towards your professor. “—shuts up, everything should be taken care of.”

You felt something heavy and sharp drop into the pit of your stomach. “But, you don’t have a key—”

“I made myself a key a couple weeks ago – got tired of waiting for you to offer. I love you, babe, but you’re too timid for your own good.” His grin, pressed the curve of your throat. “You can thank me later on, after I’ve shown you our new place.”

His hand fell to your thigh, just a touch too high not to trigger some buried, primal instinct inside of you. You didn’t think, didn’t hesitate – bolting upward and tearing yourself away from him. Your chair scaped against the tile floor, your palms slamming against the desk, and in an instant, every pair of eyes in the lecture hall were on you. The professor scowled in your direction, his ire tangible. “Do you have something to say, (L/n)?”

You opened your mouth, but your mouth was dry, your throat suddenly swollen shut. Your gaze fell back to Kuni – his smile still wide and his eyes still so, so dark.

Wordlessly, you shook your head and collapsed back into your seat. As the lecture picked back up and all concentration was returned to the front of the rom, Kuni latched onto you once again, his hold twice as strong and twice as suffocating as it had been.

It was almost a comfort to know that, this time, there wasn’t anything you could do to get away from him.

What Do I Need to Know to Appropriately Correct My Misbehaving Dog?

Before I get into talking about our dogs, I would like to talk about the correction process and how that applies to humans.  I am sure that you and I have been corrected many, many times during our lifetimes.  On top of that, I am sure that we have been corrected using a plethora of different techniques.

Remember when we were in gym class.  We did something that the coach didn’t like, and he told us “Drop and give me twenty”.  That was one way of being corrected.  We went back to the classroom and answered a math problem incorrectly.  Our teacher would guide us through the proper mathematical procedure and allow us to reach the right answer.  She corrected us, but it was a different method than was used earlier with our coach.

We go home and do something very bad.  Our dad (at least back in the day) would give us a spanking.  Maybe we did something slightly inappropriate, and we may have been corrected by being sent to our room.  Let’s say that after high school we joined the Army.  We disobeyed our Sergeant’s command, and he put us on KP duty for a week.  That is another form of correction. We get sick of the Army, complete our time, leave and get a job.  We really mess something up and our boss corrects us by firing us. 

For us, there are many ways we can be corrected and understand our mistakes.  Dogs can only have one form of correction for any form of misbehavior they perform.

i can picture you whispering with them at a table telling them all the hot gossip about the higher ups and the other teachers and then suddenly gojo is like

“hey guys !! what are you guys talking about :)” and y’all all just immediately are like “nothing haha not about nanami’s emo phase haha or your bad haircut during your first year haha or-” megumi smacks yuji to shut him up.

when they’re all training you’d bring them all snacks to keep them energized and motivate them by cheering them on, all of them smiling at you.

“when i buy them food they don’t smile at me like that” gojo pouts, pulling you into his side.

“aw baby, they just prefer me” you grin, kissing his lips and leaning your head on his shoulder.

the second years also love you <33 toge especially loves helping you pull pranks on the others, smiling and high fiving when they go to plan and you manage to pull it off.

maki thinks you’re so silly but admires you because you’re such a badass when you wanna be and you have gojo wrapped around your finger. the first time she saw you scold gojo she held her breath for you, shocked to see him sulking like a kicked puppy when you walked away from him.

the students just love having u around and anytime you’re near them they can feel the atmosphere lighten up and the tension dissolve with everyone of your jokes (good ones, as opposed to satoru’s terrible dad jokes).

his plans are to become a professional quidditch team player

the british national quidditch team coach has already scouted him out

genuinely a quidditch prodigy, since he’s a muggleborn wizard. just picked up a quaffle and was an instant baller 

mcgonagall’s pride and joy…. she lives and breathes quidditch 

he has nothing else going on for him academically, really -- just trying to pass and that’s it lol 

snape hates his guts. didn’t even have to do much, really 

only asks for quidditch stuff for his birthday

he loves when you shout out nonsense stuff like “get ‘em tiger!” or “horanghae!” or “tiger’s gaze!” during the quidditch match. it’s soooo embarrassing for you but it actually gets him fired up 

the type to fall asleep in class and then ask you for notes afterwards

of course this big puppy is a hufflepuff! but, he’s the most gryffindor-like hufflepuff ever

even the sorting hat had trouble placing him in the correct house, but ultimately chose hufflepuff 

he honestly didn’t even know if he should be trying out for the quidditch team, but dk brought him there and he barely even had to struggle at tryouts

his big frame and strong arms make him an excellent beater

he still has a fear of heights, he just forgets about it during quidditch (like what)

he loves when you praise him for his quidditch skills, especially after a particularly hard practice or grueling game 

he just wants to be held in your arms near the fireplace, is that too much to ask for ?!?!?!!?!!

surprisingly very smart at most subjects too, especially potions

the only thing he struggles with is herbology (like wtf would he be doing near all these screaming plants or oozing flowers????) 

kind of based for a hufflepuff to not be good at herbology bc of professor sprout but alas…. 

he loves care of magical creatures, because he’s like a dog -- just friends with everyone 

he’s kind of like the cedric diggory type ngl -- well liked, friendly, athletic, smart 

the type to want to walk around the castle holding hands all the time

so much so that girls around hogwarts giggle and call him a charmer

turned down the offer to become captain because it was a lot of pressure! he is still going to be the next quidditch team captain next year. 

he simply did not have a choice in this matter 

loves going to hogsmeade and sitting in the three broomsticks with his friends laughing because it’s so cozy. he wants to live in that feeling forever 

the type to send you a love letter by owl on valentines day to watch your reaction while you sit with your friends 

seungkwan: hogwarts choir soprano 

he is THE boo seungkwan of the hogwarts choir! 

professor flitwick (the conductor of the choir) is always amazed at his performance ability. seungkwan has never Not had a solo in the hogwarts annual christmas choir performance 

likes to watch quidditch practices while he does his divination essays 

he feels like it gives them a certain vibe while he makes up dreams about his imaginary rabbit dying for trelawney 

if dk was everyone’s crush, seungkwan is everyone’s friend

there’s no table he’s not welcome to sit at, and definitely no house that would turn him away

the most social butterfly in hogwarts, even more so than the weasley twins

his networking capabilities is insane, but necessary for his life path

this requires lots of connections! he wants to collect those wizard society inductions like pokemon cards

will definitely be asleep in class if you let him

he’s actually one of the most popular people in slytherin house due to his insane skills as seeker

his knack for flying was discovered during their first year flying class with madam hooch. after the class, she spoke with snape and set him up to shadow the quidditch team to be on the starting lineup starting his second year

he pretends like he doesn’t care if you come support his matches or not but is always visibly happy when you do

Monday morning! Everyone's not so favorite day of the school week. You were still recovering from the previous week - back to back tests stacked on top of physical quirk training. It was exhausting, two days off wasn't enough to fully recover. You're not too proud of how irritable you are this morning, but it's to be expected. You make your way into the building and see Midoriya waiting for you, a can of your favorite energy drink in hand. "Good morning, y/n! I know we were up late all last week, I figured you could use a pick me up this morning," he greets, extending the drink to you. "Aw, thanks Zu, that's so sweet of you," you say cheerfully as you take the drink from him. Someone you didn't recognize scoffs near by, catching your attention as she leans to the person next to her and whispers, "What a desperate loser Midoriya is, chasing after her like a lost puppy." Little did she know you had excellent hearing. You swing your head in her direction, glaring daggers immediately. Stomping over, you stand with fists balled at your side. "You wanna say that again?" you growl, daring her to repeat her mistake. She scowls and take a step closer to get in your face. "Midoriya's a desperate loser chasing after you like a lost -" She's cut short when you shove her into the shoe lockers, thrusting her up against the row with a loud thud. Your lips curl into a snarl, tilting your head sideways. "A lost what?" Midoriya scrambles to your side, a hand on your shoulder to pull you away from the confrontation. “Y/N, it’s not worth it!” He pleads, putting his hands up in defense. “Don’t worry about it! I’m not upset.” “Keep your bitch in check, Midoriya,” the girl’s friend snarks, a cheshire grin spreading across her lips. The energy shifts as you look in Midoriya’s direction, catching a glimpse of the fire behind his emerald irises. He lowers his hands, taking a deep breath while relaxing his shoulders. ”Don’t you dare talk about her like that. Understand?” You’ve never heard his voice sound like that - so…assertive. You loosen your grip on the girls uniform jacket, letting her slip out of your grasp. “Whatever.” The girls leave you and Midoriya while a crowd of others turn their eyes away from the scene. You can’t help the exasperated sigh that escapes you, frustrated at your shitty start to the morning. He takes your arm gently and guides you toward your joint homeroom class. ”Let’s skip studying tonight, we’ll go get crepes instead. My treat!”

☆ Katsuki Bakugo ☆

After classes ended for the day, you and Bakugo decide to do your typical training regimen outside. It was a beautiful spring day - why waste it by staying inside? The two of you make your way to the training grounds, tossing your bags down and stretching in the grass. Another group of students appear and make their way to the other side of the training grounds. It wasn't uncommon to share the grounds, so you don't pay any mind to them. You begin warming up by jogging around the perimeter of the grounds together at a steady pace. By the time you circle back around, you're starting to get hot and unzip your gym uniform jacket, leaving it hang open for the breeze to brush against your skin. You're black sports bra becomes visible and it exposes your midsection, but covers more than the average bathing suit. You wear it all the time and Bakugo isn't bothered by it. He could care less what you wear to work out in as long as you worked hard. "Can I bother you to get this one knot out of my shoulder? I can't seem to shake it," you ask him, rolling your shoulder while wincing. "Think I pulled it during quirk training last week." "Fine, but you gotta be more careful, idiot. Gonna end up shredding your muscles before ya even get to be a pro," Bakugo scolds as he walks over to you. "Where is it?" You point to the spot on your shoulder blade as you discard your jacket, letting it fall to your elbows. He grips your opposite shoulder to hold you in place as he digs his thumb into the spot, roughly rubbing in circles to loosen the knot. He places his palm over the aching muscle after a few minutes and lightly activates his quirk, warming the area to help with the pain. You sigh with relief, the heat helping immediately melt the tension away. A few of the students from the other group approach you two, staring at you with disgust. "Get a damn room, you two. We're trying to focus," the one girl says annoyed, hands on her hips. "And do us all a favor, cover the hell up. No one wants to see you flirt with this jackass." "You really came all the way over here to bitch at me instead of just minding your business?" you argue, pulling your jacket back onto your shoulders. "Sounds like a you problem." She takes a step toward you and pushes you backwards, sending you tumbling into Bakugo. It catches you off guard, but you immediately use the momentum of his hands catching you to reverse the force and knock yourself back into her. She stumbles, attempting to take a swing at you and failing miserably as she falls to the ground. Bakugo barks out a laugh. "If it's a fight yer lookin' for, might wanna think twice." It's hard to ignore the sound of sparks fizzling from his palms, knowing he's definitely pissed she put her hands on you, despite his reaction. "Knock it off! Let's get out of here," her friend huffs, reaching her hand out to help her off the ground. She smacks her hand away, crawling to her feet on her own. "Hope to see you in the sports festival this year!" you call mockingly as they scurry away. "Really hopin' you get paired with her so you can kick her ass."

☆ Shoto Todoroki ☆

"Seriously?" you whine, staring at the empty space on the counter in the cafeteria. A girl nearby you cackles to herself, shooting a dirty look your way. "Should have been faster!" she yells, mocking your disappointment. You furrow your brows at her. This has happened every single day for the last two weeks - she takes your favorite snack (sometimes multiples) to purposefully throw it in the trash in front of you. "Why the hell do you have it out for me?!" you ask, frustrated as you shove your tray onto the counter. She tosses her hair over her shoulder, turning her nose up at you. "I'm doing you a favor, y/n. Only winners get what they want." She must have been referring to the sparring match you had last week against Ochaco. It's not your fault your hand to hand combat needs work - that's what school is for. "Fine, let me fight you for it," you say casually. "I'll win it from you." She lets out that stereotypical anime villain laugh. "I'd like to see you try!" And you do. You strut over and smack the tray from her hands, causing it to clatter to the ground. Your eyes are locked on hers, assessing her like a predatory identifying it's prey in the wild. "What the hell's your problem?!" she yells, putting her hands up in a panic. "What? You said try, so here I am." As you're staring her down, Todoroki walks up and casually stands next to you. "Y/N, I saved you a seat," he says nonchalantly. "Come sit with me." You scoff, rolling your eyes at the girl and how pathetic she looks, cowering at your actions that she dared you to do. "Fine." You follow Todoroki back to the table and sit down, pouting about losing your favorite snack for the umpteenth time. "You shouldn't be fighting over food, y/n," he voices quietly. "That's not worth the potential punishment." You sigh. "Yeah, yeah. I know, Sho." He then pulls something out of his bag from the floor, placing it on the table in front of you. "Here. I picked something up for you." Like magic, your favorite snack is presented on the table. Your eyes light up, ecstatic that he saved one just for you. "Aw Sho, this is so nice of you! Thank you!"Little did you know, Todoroki bought the entire tray with Endeavor's credit card, ensuring that you get your favorite snack for the next few days without being bullied over it. "Sure."

It had been three months since you arrived in South Korea as an exchange student, leaving behind the comfort of your home country for the adventure of a lifetime. The initial culture shock had given way to a sense of wonder and appreciation for the bustling city of Seoul and its rich history. You had made friends, tried countless new foods, and immersed yourself in a language that once seemed impossibly complex but now flowed from your lips with growing confidence.

Your heart swelled at his words. "Jun, I'm so proud of you and SVT. I don't want to hold you back or cause any problems for your career or the group."

Jun shook his head, taking both of your hands in his. "You could never hold me back. You're the reason I've made it this far. Your support, your love – it's what keeps me going on those days when everything feels too hard, too overwhelming. The members understand that. They've been pushing me to do this, actually."

Tears pricked at your eyes. "I've missed you so much," you confessed, your voice barely above a whisper.

Houndoom was always one of my favorite Pokémon, and I'm currently doing research to see if the line is a good fit for me. To that end, might you have any pointers on keeping Houndour/Houndoom specifically?

the houndour line are interesting pokemon to keep! it can be done, but it's a lot more work than other canine pokemon. houndour, unlike the similarly-typed growlithe and maschiff, are not domesticated pokemon. they have some quirks that make keeping them tough.

the first step you need to take is checking if you can actually have a houndour where you're living. if you live in an apartment or belong to a housing association, they most likely have a ban on houndour. this is partly because undomesticated fire types are considered a moderate fire risk and thus are usually banned automatically, but it's also because the houndoor line is noisy. they have a complex system of communication consisting of dozens of unique vocalizations ranging from yips to howls, and much like a combusken cock, their favorite time to start up the chorus is at dawn. you're going to have to be okay with a lot of noise to raise them, and not everyone who lives near you is necessarily going to agree with that choice.

if you are able to keep one, then you need to do the typical fireproofing you would do for any fire type, and make sure it has a safe area where it can use its fire (they routinely flame themselves as a form of parasite control and coat maintenance). you then have to choose how many houndour you want to keep. houndour are pack pokemon and have high social needs, and it's not recommended to keep less than two at a time. some people keep a single houndour because they will bond very tightly to their trainer, and they claim it makes it easier to train them, but it results in other behavioral issues down the road. trying to be their only social structure at home is a bad idea.

getting your houndour from the right source is also really important, because they absolutely need to be raised with littermates so they can learn proper bite inhibition from each other. i've been around houndour that were allowed to bite in play, and i've still got the arm pain to show for it- that is not a bite you want to risk. if you get a weaned puppy, puppy socialization classes are a really good idea for these guys to help them get that social fulfillment.

make sure that you can meet their exercise needs, too. they're active mostly at dawn and dusk, and they're fast; they need plenty of heavy-duty fireproof chew toys and time to run around. this is part of why i don't recommending evolving them unless you have a battling team, because they really need to ability to go head to head with other pokemon once they evolve. it's part of establishing their social structure, and you don't want them to turn that need onto you.

they're definitely pokemon that take a lot of work and careful planning to keep! but they're also remarkably loyal, playful, and affectionate in the right circumstances. you just have to make sure you can provide an environment where they can show off their best qualities.
