Hidden Truth
♡ Pairing: Connor Rk800 x Fem!Reader
♡ Summary: You’ve tried to deny the growing feelings for a certain android, but you can’t keep holding it all inside.
♡ Warnings: angst, fluff
Tumblr media
"Where you going?" Connor called out, curious as to where the Lieutenant was rushing to.
Hank tipped his head back, gulping down a lot of alcohol, trying to finish it off before he got to the car.
"To get drunker!" He called back, answering Connors suspicion on where he was headed. The bar.
Seeming frustrated and at a rough patch with the Lieutenant's relationship, Connor re adjusted his tie and turned slowly to the lingering figure leaning against the railing.
Someone who had been silent through Hank and his argument. Connor tilted his head, trying to read their body language. The LED spun yellow, quickly returning to a ocean blue, before he moved closer.
The crisp cool air bit at her cheeks, snowflakes clinging to her long brunette hair. She was lost, unsure of everything at this point. Her mind remained a puzzle that was impossible to finish.
"Is everything okay Detective (L/N)?" Connor asked softly. She seemed more timid, concerned etched all over her face.
Connor was right by her now, leaning against the rail with her, glancing back and fourth from the view and her blank expression. His arm almost touched hers, just the right amount of distance in between.
She took a deep breath, trying so hard to hold everything back. Her chest tightened, all her internal battles begging to be released.
"I'm so tired." She confessed, her voice quiet and shaky.
Connor let his gaze fall to his palms, taking a moment before responding.
"Then you should get some rest Detective. Allow me to take you ho—" Connor started but was interrupted.
"That's not what I mean't.. Ya know what.. Never mind." She said, her voice dropping at the end.
"You seem troubled. Talk to me." Connor told her, wanting her to lift her eyes to meet his, but she kept her face down, not trusting herself to not break if she gazed into his gentle browns.
"I've been thinking about that one night." She started, Connor leaned in closer letting her know that he was listening. "The night that I kissed you on your cheek.."
Connor's LED spun yellow for a second, remembering how her lips felt on his synthetic skin. He couldn't find the right words for that moment, so instead stayed silent.
(Y/N) glanced up while Connor was staring forward into the river, she waited until his LED went a calm blue before continuing.
"I've had no one for a long time, and.. I've realized that I don't feel alone anymore." She confessed, making Connor tilt his head once more, his LED spinning from yellow to blue. “I guess I’m just a bit overwhelmed from it all, ya know?”
Her telling him this, she couldn’t help but feel a weight be lifted off her chest. Even if the feeling wasn’t reciprocated.
"I don't know exactly what I feel for you, you probably think it's ridiculous. But I can't help how I feel." She said, her cheeks glistening with trails of tears. "I care about you, and want to be with you forever. You make me happy, you’ve helped me out of this dark patch that I’ve been stuck in for so long."
She had finished, letting the tears run in a steady stream down her face. Connor was concerned and hated to see her cry, it pulled at his wires and made him feel some sort of protective way. He was still confused about one thing.
"May I ask you a question, (Y/N)?" He asked her, watching as she turned slowly to meet his eyes with her red ones. Even as distressed as she was, she looked incredibly beautiful, causing Connor to get lost in her (E/C) eyes.
She nodded slowly, still keeping eye contact, moving her arm to where she'd be able to touch Connors.
"Why are you crying? The things you just told me seem.. Happy." Connor asked her, watching her eyes turn down back to the river, her body slumping at his question.
"Because what I want, I'll never have." She answered plainly, sounding like she was becoming numb to her own emotions.
Was she crazy to want Connor? She would never fault him for not feeling the same, in a sense it’s what she expected. But a part of her had hoped differently.
Connor's LED spun red, conflicting messages and deviant like emotions/feelings rushing through him.
Connor allowed his LED to go back to blue, before he made his next move. Carefully, Connor moved his hand, placing it on top of (Y/N)'s resting on the railing.
Her head turned in confusion to Connor, who was admiring her beauty with his gentle browns.
"Connor what.." She started, but stopped when Connor moved closer to her.
"I may not completely understand these so called emotions yet.. But I'd like to be with you forever too." He confessed, the words sounding weird coming out of his mouth. But soon was replaced by the image of (Y/N)'s face glowing from his words. And then.. she smiled, warming Connors metal heart.
She moved her body so that Connor and her were facing each other completely, her eyes holding his in a trance that he never wanted to escape from.
After a couple seconds of silence, the wind was blowing their hair perfectly, creating a core like memory.
(Y/N) wrapped her arms around Connor, pressing her cheek into his chest, as Connor hugged her tightly back, his chin rested on her head.
(Y/N) wasn't alone anymore, she'd never be. She had Connor.. Forever.
I love you.
They both thought but decided to confess another time. If only they knew just how made for each other they were.
A/N: feedback appreciated & taking requests <3

   A tear glistened in the corner of Playmaker’s eye as he reached out into that cloudy, blue sky and touched Ai, plucking him from the digital space.
   Ai convulsed inside his hand. Just an eyeball. Reconstructed, refigured, recantered and then he remembered. Playmaker’s heart lurched with worry as he cradled Ai, standing into the wind and letting it roll off him as he waited for Ai to say something. To do something. Anything. And then a tear to match the ones dripping slowly down the side of Playmaker’s face welled up on the rubber duct of Ai’s entire eyeball.
   “Yusaku…?” he murmured. “Yusaku! Yusaku! My Yusaku!”
   “Y-Yeah, it's me, Ai.” Playmaker beamed and Ai was happy that such a wide smile would be his first memory in this refreshed, new world.
   “I thought… I thought I was a goner.” Ai mumbled, grateful to be alive but grim in his certainty that he was very much not so supposed to be alive.
   “You know me,” Playmaker shrugged, “once I decide something, it becomes my purpose. Be it for three months or ten years, I just get absorbed in that one singular desire. Looking for you, piecing you back together, that was my one desire this time.”
   “And I bet it was just as destructive for you than if was just plain ol’ revenge.” Ai replied.
   Playmaker didn’t have a verbal response to that but the guilty look on his face spoke volumes. Ai nodded in his hands, moving himself up and down against Playmaker’s palms.
   “I thought as much.” Ai mumbled. “You never really change and yet…?”
   It, too, was written all over Playmaker’s face just as much as the guilt of having pushed aside so many of his connections just so he could reconnect to this one. Playmaker found it worth it though. Unbelievably worth it. He kept smiling, even if his initial grin had shrunken in on itself and steeped with guilt.
   “I can’t help it, your right,” Playmaker replied, murmuring, “Ai means to love people but I feel like I can only do it when I have…”
   “Ai?” Ai piped up hopefully.
   “Yeah, exactly.” Playmaker told him.
   “Oh, you incorrigible…!” Ai complained and he seemed rather cranky in Playmaker’s hands now, frowning and pouting but then he let up on it. “I love you, too. Thank you for bringing me back, for having hope.”
   “My pleasure.” Playmaker replied.
   “So, what now?” asked Ai. “Am I going to be stuck like this forever? My handsome visages? Gone, perished, truly a fate worse than death.”
   “I’ve got that all figured out,” Playmaker assured Ai, “So let’s log-out.” He shifted slightly and an admittance followed, “There’s someone else I really want back now, though, as well. Its kind of co-linked to getting your body back, too.”
   Ai had a sneaking suspicion that he knew what that meant so he perked up immediately, “Let’s get to it then, Playmaker! Seize the wind, already!”
   Playmaker laughed and it was such a lovely sound to Ai. It was unrehearsed and croaky but it was laughter nonetheless. They logged out together shortly afterwards. A cavalcade of pale blue data turning into sparkling shards of data before disappearing entirely.
   When they resurfaced, the location was not where Ai expected. He was still in the palm of Yusaku’s hands as he ventured out of a dark niche where his Link VRAINS rig was set up. It was familiar but it wasn’t home - or at least Yusaku’s apartment, even if it had never really felt like home until the end, when it was more about the emotions imbued in the walls than the walls themselves.
   Looking around, the first thing Ai saw, through the guards of Yusaku’s fingers, was the ocean. It was about midday, early afternoon, and the ocean was sparkling. It was a rich azure through the silver railing and the framing of the huge doorway into this building that Yusaku had made his next hovel. Ai realised where they were; they were at the site of their final showdown, if not a warehouse or two either.
   Ai wriggled in Yusaku’s hands so he could look up to him, “What happened to the apartment?” he asked. “Wh-Where’s Roboppy’s shell?”
   “Somewhere safe, don’t worry,” Yusaku replied and then he shrugged, his gaze grew distant, “I’m not sure what happened to the apartment. Landlord never tried to contact me when I bailed, I left behind whatever I couldn’t bring with me so I could stay here. It was easier than trying to move all your stockpiles there. Mightn’t be the most luxurious of places but its quiet here.”
   “Yeah, nothing more soothing than the sounds of construction.” Ai complained because he knew, for one, that he could hear the sound of jackhammers somewhere along the industrial pier.
   “Okay, serene.” Yusaku corrected himself.
   “But if there’s people around… how are you…?” Ai’s voice trailed off.
   “It’s not easy but I’ve managed alright to hide out undetected. I think the workers enjoy having a ghost around. So long as it doesn’t touch anything important, they don’t care if some electricity is pilfered.” Yusaku said but he brightened up, returned his gaze to Ai. “But now that we’re together again, let’s try and find somewhere really nice to live, yeah?”
   “Yeah.” Ai excitedly replied.
   “So let’s get you into your not-meat suit.” Yusaku said. “I don’t have all the means to give you back your Ignis body but take your pick of SOLtiS bodies.”
   Yusaku drifted through the vast, freezing warehouse like it was his home, showing Ai to one of the many stashes of cold, lifeless bodies that belonged to them. As eerie as it was to have so many empty SOLtiS androids around, Ai jumped into one enthusiastically. He wormed and wriggled his way into their shell and the eyeball became a beating heart. Yusaku watched, breathless, as a dressed and ready Ai appeared before him in the form of his dashing persona as a human.
   Whilst Ai may have been groggy and vague at first upon revival, he was really in the swing of things now as he popped up on his two legs like he was born to walk. Yusaku smiled gently whilst Ai stretched out all his nuts and bolts, making sure his limbs hadn’t rusted and got as close to limber as a robot could be and at the very end, made a very satisfied sigh.
   “Alright, what’s next?” Ai asked.
   “I think you know,” Yusaku said and though his heart thudded in his chest, a beg not to, he reached out to take Ai’s hand, “let’s go.”
   “Of course, partner.” Ai replied affectionately.
   Their fingers intertwined and linked together and then they were off with the wind. Not forever, obviously, Yusaku wanted to circle back later to grab Roboppy and a few other things that would be difficult to replace retroactively but for now, he and Ai were really putting the blues of the warehouse behind them both. And they both knew where they were headed on the interim, following the winding, concrete paths that allied themselves with the ocean so down below at the base of the steep cliffs here.
   When they arrived where they wanted to go, they still arrived looking like they ought to be dead. A corpse and a ghost: neither sure which was which but it was worth it.
   Cafe Nagi’s van was set up to the side of the Stardust Road. The last of the lunch time rush customers were trickling in and out, a waiter with a fluffy ponytail darting around them, fetching them refreshments and the like who paused to stare, puzzled, as his brother abandoned his post behind the grill.
   Yusaku smiled, tears in his eyes again that turned his smile creaky and all the more sincere, “Hey Kusanagi,” he said as Shoichi rushed towards him and Ai with a disbelieving smile, “I-I’ve missed you.”
   Before Yusaku knew it, he was swept up in a big bear hug from Shoichi. His arms surged around Yusaku’s scrawny frame and were so warm, Yusaku couldn’t have been more thankful for it. He buried his wet face into Shoichi’s chest and wrapped his arms around Shoichi’s waist. He felt so cared for as Shoichi’s hand cradled the back of his head, his fingers in his blue hair - and Ai, Ai was involving himself in this hug one way or another, too. Trying to reach both Yusaku and Shoichi but Shoichi was hogging Yusaku but Ai didn’t mind.
   “Never - and I mean never - do that to me again.” Shoichi growled. He was angry and sad and happy and relieved all at once. All that really broke through the barrage of emotions that he felt was love.
   “I promise.” Yusaku replied. He hugged back tighter. “I absolutely promise, I - I don’t want to be separated from you or Ai ever again, both of you are my precious partners.”
   “I believe you, Yusaku.” Shoichi consoled him. His head shifted to the left slightly, “And I mean it, Ai, I’m glad to see your back as well. I don’t want you running off either.”
   “It’s good to see you again, too, hot dog man.” Ai mumbled very fondly and with something of a tint of sadness. “And trust me,” he added, “there’s nowhere I’d rather be right now with you two.”
   “Same.” Yusaku mumbled.
   “I’m glad,” Shoichi replied softly and though he didn’t want to, he loosened his embrace of Yusaku so he could see his face properly, his cheeks were red and he looked dishevelled, there were bags under his eyes, “Yusaku? Ai?” Shoichi murmured.
   “Yeah?” Yusaku mumbled.
   Shoichi tilted his head to the side slightly, “Do you want to come live with me?” he asked. “Me and Jin?”
   “I’d love to.” Yusaku replied.
   “Me too.” Ai added on.
   Yusaku hugged Shoichi again. He couldn’t wait to move in with Shoichi and together they could get Ai his little Ignis body back too. It was all happening and Yusaku couldn’t be happier. He had been so depressed and angry since Ai died. Everything else became a blur to him. Lifeless, miserable. He didn’t want that anymore or ever again. So, he was determined to never let go of either Ai or Shoichi ever again and then, like an armory, the legendary spear and shield to pierce and protect and their tentacle monster too, they could go forward and progress. Reconnect and co-link. That’s all Yusaku wanted.

Broken Hearts Tied Together
Universe: Detroit: Become Human Pairing: RK800 x reader Warnings: Mentions of loss Word Count: 708 words
Yes, there will be a part 2 to this!
~~~~
You weren't really sure why you had left your house, but there was just something driving you out of your front door and out into the snow. Maybe it was a gut feeling, maybe it was fate, but either way, you had left your house to wander the snow-dusted streets of Detroit.
The days had been calm since the Android Uprising two years ago, but tensions were still there, festering like a sick disease under the skin of man, bubbling and boiling until it reached the point of no return.
It was a dark truth, but truth it was, and there wasn't anyone who could deny it.
But all those thoughts fled from your mind when you saw something that you knew would haunt you until the day your heart ceased to beat.
"Hey! What the hell are you doing?" Your feet carried you without thought as you ran over to the man-- no, android -- who was staring up at the moon with a desolate look, a gun pressed up against his temple.
He was going to kill himself.
He started, turning to see you rush over to him.
"I..."
"How bloody dare you!" You cried, snatching the gun away from him and making sure the safety was on. "How dare you throw away your life like that? You're a deviant, aren't you? Why don't you value your life more, you idiot?!" The android looked away, shame clouding his features.
"I... I didn't want to be alone." His voice was quiet as he turned his gaze back to the moon, barely visible past the snow-filled clouds. Your own gaze softened, and you moved to stand beside the android.
"My name is (Y/N)," you said softly.
"I'm Connor," the android replied. With a soft smile, you looked up at the moon with him.
"There you go then," your voice was almost a whisper. "You're not alone any more, Connor. I'm here."
Silence fell over you until Connor suddenly broke down, tears falling from his eyes as he gripped the railing preventing people from falling into the river you both looked over.
"I know the lifespan of humans," he sobbed. "But I thought Hank would live longer! After Sumo went, I wanted Hank to stay, I was so scared of him leaving! And the he did, he died and left me alone." You froze. You weren't expecting that.
"So, someone's left you too, then." Connor looked at you through his tears. You took a deep breath and attempted a smile.
"I know how it feels, Connor. Trust me. I've not long lost someone myself, my friend actually, and I know what it feels like, having that hole that can't be filled. Feeling like something large is missing, like a puzzle piece you can't find." You fought back your own tears.
"It hurts, doesn't it?" You looked at the android and nodded.
"Like a bitch," you whispered hoarsely.
Silence fell again, as you both simply enjoyed the company of another who knew the pain of losing one they loved, who knew of the darkness that threatened you after their death, and of the gaping, black abyss of a hole it left within your chest, within your heart.
"Hey, Connor?" He turned to face you, and you gave him a shaky smile.
"Why don't we go visit them? Hank, and my friend. We can go see them together, talk to them, let them know how we're doing. Maybe they'll hear us in whatever afterlife there may be, and they'll be able to rest easy, knowing that we're okay, and that we're strong enough to carry on without them."
With a soft sound of surprise, followed by a kind smile, Connor nodded.
"I'd love to, (Y/N)." Without a word, you gently placed your hand over Connor's, hoping you could give him strength, and to let him know you knew. You knew all about it.
Neither of you saw how his LED flashed red.
Silence fell for the final time, but it was a calm, gentle silence that soothed both your pained hearts, and even began to heal them, tying them together with a crimson string, weaving in and out, tying you together. Tying you to each other.
Together, you both stood before the moon.
Leashed
Srevni || Present Day
You slip back into the building with almost no effort.
Suspiciously no effort. It’s like -
“My dear, do you really think...”
Your fists clench, but you keep going.
“...I wouldn’t even greet you? I’m not so rude.”
You ignore Cherie. All you need to do is keep walking. You can’t do anything to them, can’t upset their plans...but you can make it easier for Naeyrn and Chimer, who will probably follow you. Maybe they’re coming even now.
A small hand rests on your shoulder. You want to bite it. Instead turn your head to look at the short troll.
The most familiar and hated features you know.
“Leave me alone.” The words are nearly a hiss, quiet against the sterile inside of the skyscraper.
“That’s not what you wanted, several sweeps ago. You begged me to make you safe.” They murmur, softly as if to a wriggler, as if every word isn’t a reminder of their power over you.
They reach up to your throat, brushing against your tattoos gently as a shudder runs through you.
“Don’t - don’t pretend you ever believed I could be.” You manage to snap, though it’s tetchy rather than truly aggressive. You shrivel inside at the weakness. You could have Cherie kneeling on the floor...if you hadn’t let them take advantage, those sweeps ago.
And for what?
For this?
“I only wanted to give you what you desired.” They say, getting even closer, a hand to your side. You hate that you recognize their perfume; it’s their favorite, citrus and vanilla. You used to mix it with oil to see the puzzled, annoyed look on their face.
“I know better now.” This time your voice is stronger with bitterness.
“You might be over me, but you’re not over her.” They say, amused now and less soft. “She has the power helped make you. Isn’t that a tad perverse?”
“You have nothing to lecture me on of perversion, Cherie Dolcez, when you keep Maidel as a prize. You’re disgusting.”
 They actually pause.
“I never forced her.” They say, the faintest hint of petulance on their lips. You smile, little though you should. You could always get them to break their facade if you pushed hard enough.
“You don’t even pity her. She’ll never pity you again, now that she knows better. That’s what this is all about, isn’t it? Your stupid bloodline obsession. Liehde’s get should have died with Etoile. Better an idiot than a highblood so pathetic they’re fit for nothing.”
You feel them stiffen for just a second before they relax and smile again.
“It’s been lovely catching up, honey, but you’re not interfering anymore, even indirectly.”
You start to laugh, and then realize you have a splitting headache. That shouldn’t be poss - that shouldn’t be possib -
The last thing you see is the device on Cherie’s palm as you collapse, which looks unpleasantly like a nullifier.
--
Chimer Latrai || Present Day
You stare up at the skyscraper, its violet lights visible from many blocks away. Naeyrn’s beside you, mask on and biting her lip, and she reaches out a hand. You squeeze it briefly before letting it drop; the two of you have to focus now.
You take your clock in your hand.
One turn of the dial on its golden rim
Things slow.
Two turns.
The rush of the city is gone like a sigh, within the bubble Naeyrn has made. Space and time are synced into an unnatural state
for only a second as
she makes a portal and you both
step through to a perfect trap.
--
Maidel Juzuxt || Present Day
You feel you know the ceiling as well as your own horns from how long you’ve stared at it, only occasionally shifting in the plush couch provided in your block. None of your games seem appealing; none of the violet-class food in the coldbox. Cherie’s ideas seemed so enticing down in the generator...but now it just all seems insane again. You don’t know what to think.
The only reason you start to get up is the crick in your neck from resting your head on the couch arm. The cobalt-embroidered cushions lay on the floor, tossed there when you flopped down.
As you get up and stretch, you notice the corner of something poking out from under the couch’s dust cover. You get down on your knees and tug at it, easing it out until you recoil as if burned.
It’s...it’s a diary with a cute sheep design on the cover.
It has your name on it.
You tentatively flip it open.
“I beat the DLC in two days! Survived on chips alone. How’s that for an accomplishment?? W00T!”
Oh god, this sounds exactly like you when you were six. You cringe.
You flip further onward.
“I’m so bored I’ve finally started writing in this thing again. Can’t leave, something something, but it’s not like I have a lot to do. It’s not SO bad I guess, but I wish we’d just get going with things. What’re they waiting for?”
You turn a few more pages, a bad feeling growing in the pit of your digestive sac.
“This THING showed up tonight! It was huge, with wings, and an eye on its neck, and it was terrifying! Somehow Cherie stopped it just by talking to it, and led it away...They’re really amazing sometimes. I wonder what that was? It told me it was sorry. Weird. Then Cherie came back with some weird looking troll. I don’t know what that’s about.”
The last entry is only two words.
“They lied.”
Thanks, past me! You want to scream. Lied about what? You’re so helpful! Thanks for going and hooking up with a creepy blueblood who wants to warp reality for some weird utopian nonsense! Thanks for supporting them! Thanks SO MUCH!
You shove the stupid useless thing back under the couch and it’s right then that you hear a knock, and freeze.
You get up slowly and go over to open it.
It’s Cherie, of course, and not only are they smiling (as usual) but their hands are pressed together and they’re moving back and forth slightly, as if so excited they can’t stay still.
“Maidel! Everything’s ready. Come see!”
They reach out as if to take your hand before letting it drop, looking sheepish, but their excitement is quickly recovered and they skip on. You follow, mostly because maybe, maybe this is finally ending. You can go back hive.
Again you hear the ring of a faint bell.
You go back down to the generator, but this time, it’s not only the helm columns that greet you; your mouth drops open as you see...
“Naeyrn.” Your mouth is dry, the word a hoarse croak. It’s her this time, you know it.
“Chimer?” You add, confused. What’s she doing here? Did Cherie really mean...
Both of them are being restrained inside what looks like a shimmering forcefield bubble, and both are unconscious.
There’s another troll - or is it an android? They have a visor - on a pedestal raised above the others. They’re just...lying there, as if asleep, but unnaturally still.
Erikaa, Tabula, and Priori are all standing off to the side. Cherie gestures to the olive and the fuchsia.
“Priori’s knowledge allowed me to capture them. See how the people who hurt you no longer can? In fact...”
They gesture again, and one of the columns slides open. You stumble back, terrified.
“Doroch!” You cry, but they too look like they’re asleep, and the door slides shut again.
“I have Blanca Rincon as well.” They comment casually. “It’s a shame I couldn’t get miss Lyseli too, but everything in time. Do you see, Maidel? Everyone who made you afraid...they’re all going to change.”
You say nothing. You don’t understand.
Cherie takes out a remote, presses a button, and the troll on the pedestal’s visor flickers before they sit bolt upright.
They turn their head toward you and their ears flatten.
“I’m sorry.”
The blueblood uses their other hand to take two objects out of their sylladex and put them in your hands.
Chimer’s clock. Naeyrn’s mask.
You shiver.
Then they press another button, and the troll on the pedestal warps into a horrific crouching beast, with a crackle of energy that sounds horribly, horribly familiar. It’s...humming, a deep, low lament.
The shape is different. It has legs, and only one set of wings, and a head that’s a terrible amalgam of almost-troll features and eldritch ones.
“Look at what Echthros became, Maidel! A mockery of Orthos Aviiva and itself, since it no longer had my moirail’s form to steal. Made by the very creatures responsible for all our misery.”
They smile as wide as you’ve ever seen.
“Let’s make them pay atonement for their crimes, shall we? I need you to break these objects, Maidel. It will release the creatures who shut themselves in there, one last gambit to ensure their survival.”
You look at the creature again. It’s curled into a ball, tail wrapped around it as it continues to hum, head bowed. It seems a lot less threatening than Echthros ever was.
“Don’t bother pitying it, Maidel.” Cherie says soothingly. “It’s still essentially the same being who tried to wipe you from existence. It would hurt you if it could. Do you think it doesn’t hate you for banishing it? It lies. It has always lied.”
“That’s not striiiictly true.”
Priori’s voice is the last thing you’re expecting to hear, and you still flinch slightly.
Irritation flicks across Cherie’s face for a second before they smile questioningly.
“Now’s not really the time, dear...”
“It really is, though.” She says, finishing with a yawn. “Y’see, we were all kinda like hey, I’m not so sure about this, because like, suddenly you’re only paying attention to freckleface here, and you know that’s not very reassuring and all, because like...the rest of us exist too. Including your ‘rail. You know, the whole reason you did all this anyway?”
Cherie turns and looks at Erikaa, now looking sincerely worried.
“Eri, I’m so sorry...”
“Save it.” She snarls. “Shove it into the incinerator with the rest of your garbage.”
“Eri, I - ”
Tabula takes the mask and clock from you, and everything vanishes in a massive burst of white light.
Discovering mobile gaming late
I deliberately excluded myself from the mobile gaming explosion for many years. Growing up with all the Nintendo consoles - starting with Nintendo 64, Gameboy Color and then later Playstation and PC trained me to view games under a certain lens. Deep, immersive, and needing many hours at a time. I assumed that mobile games were too shallow to fulfill my gaming craving and did not make the effort to keep up with the scene. It felt too far away from what I loved about video games.
However, that is changing.
Fast forward to 2016, when 2 key things happened:
1) I bought a decent smart phone (One Plus 3) and an IPad Pro. 2) I started building games in LOVE2D.
1) meant that I had good hardware and access to both the Play Store and the App Store. Having the platforms made all the difference as I knew I would be able to access both tablet and phone experience. (I'll confess that I was pretty late to the whole high end smart phone thing as I spent most time on my computer).
2) meant that I began to have much greater appreciation of simple games. Because it's so hard to make a game, right? And having that new found understanding made me want to try out more mobile games. I could look at them and imagine what it might be like to program them. (AAA titles are too daunting to play that exercise with).
I've been doing the obvious: checking out what's on the front page of the stores and download whatever is free to learn from. This is mostly on Android - although I've done a bit on iOS as well. It's been interesting. There seems to be an abundance of 3 in a row puzzle games paired with an Overworld that lets you overview your progress. And of course - make in app purchases or open treasure chests to watch ads. If it isn't a Candy Crush Clone then Clash of Clans inspired. Or a simple of effective physics based game or an on rails runner.
In fact, there is a fair bit of variety. Due to the sheer volume I'm know there's so much I still haven't tried or heard of. It feels like it's not so easy to discover the gems just by browsing the top plays list.
In the past months of exploring the scene, here are a few of the games that have been the most memorable.
Evolution Planet - by Pyro Mobile
This game takes a slightly different spin to the classic 3 in a row puzzle games. On completing a 3 in a row, the creatures merge together and evolve into new ones that can also be lined up in a row. The sound effects, pacing and variety in the level design definitely stands out as high quality amongst the over saturated genre. There's a good range of activities, from evolving a certain number of a species, to boss fights, and star challenges.
Orbit - by Highkey Games
Orbit is a real gem, that I was lucky enough to spot on the front page of the Play Store. It is a simple and beautiful simulation of planets orbiting blackholes. The player controls launching planets into a trajectory and the goal is to get a certain number into a type of orbit. It's a very soothing game which made me remember my love of Mechanics in school. And it even has classical music in the background. Highly recommended.
Kingdom Rush - by Ironhide Game Studio
I forgot how much I enjoyed tower defense games. When I downloaded this I was surprised at how addictive it was. It follows the usual things players would expect: spend gold to buy archers, soldiers and mages to defend against waves of enemies. It's very polished and has great sound and visuals. It also has a variety of difficulties which makes it more interesting if you want to really test yourself.
I have barely scratched the surface of mobile gaming but these are my first impressions and experiences now. I am also interested to look more deeply at games by Nintendo and Square Enix that are for mobile.
Overall I would say that mobile games still feel like how magazines are to chapter books. Shallower, but there are certainly some high quality ones out there. But the fact that they are easier to get into and pick up and play can only mean that there is more time overall to spend gaming.
I'm glad I've now been dedicating time to mobile games.
