Witch/Tarot PSA: DO NOT BUY COUNTERFEIT DECKS.
What is a counterfeit deck?
These are “decks” are illegal manufacture of actual real tarot decks that are not created by the actual publishing houses or the artist or author. These were copy pasted terribly on small cheap card stock in plastic folded boxes rather than the regular boxes that the publishing company would use. These cards will not sometimes credit the author or artist, do not use the copyrighted company which is illegal and it will not come with a guidebook but a QR code on the back.
Why are they bad?
Yes buying regular and legit decks can be expensive in my country US it’s about $30 if the deck is brand new. Not that expensive but if you can’t spare $30 save your money or wait till they go on sale. Tarot is a luxury not a necessity remember that. When one buy these decks their money will not go to the artist or author or even publishing company but a Chinese factory most likely a sweatshop that are treating their workers terribly. I’d rather pay full priced for an artist and authors hardwork that they deserve knowing they put their blood, sweat, and tears for. Also creating these inauthentic decks harms the environment as well.
Keep in mind publishing houses like Llewelyn or Us Game systems are not big, their not penguin books or Harper Collins these are small publishing companies that need to have a percentage of the sales.
Author Ciro Marchetti known for his Glided Tarot said that he doesn’t want to continue his art career for tarot because of this reason, of his deck being illegal pirated and sold for a very cheap price that isn’t worth it because the quality is terrible and unethical. It affects the artists and authors mostly because their work is being produced by companies that they won’t get rightfully paid for.
Also here’s one of the most messed up thing I discovered, I love my small metaphysical shops and my family likes to explore all kinds of shops in my state of Connecticut. But when I go into a shop and I see those counterfeit decks now unlike Temu where they sell them for less than $10 these owners would sell them for full price. This is a scam because people who are unaware just brought a pirated item thinking it’s legit and actually produced by an actual publishing company when it’s a cheaply made deck and the pictures are terrible quality very pixelated. I get angry when I see these decks and I’m taking my business somewhere else.
There have been cases where people are selling AI versions of tarot decks for instance, The Dark Wood Tarot by Sasha Graham (wonderful deck highly recommend) the art was stolen and reused for a AI tarot deck that used the same name and everything. Beware of that and I know that isn’t a common but AI tarot exists so be careful especially on sites like Etsy, Etsy has a lot of AI decks, do your research and message the seller if possible at times the seller will even put in the bio of what it is their selling if it’s made from AI.
How to Prevent It

But I find it hard to believe that a lot of these shop owners don’t know what their doing when selling these decks, unless they’re very irresponsible or just don’t care about ethics of business or even laws of their business.
Cues when you are checking a counterfeit deck?
Does it have the artist’s and author’s name sometimes the person is both author and artist.
Does it come with a guidebook when the normal deck usually does. Some of these illegal decks will remove “guidebook” from the title and have a small QR Code on the back of these decks that’s your NUMBER ONE CLUE when you spot these decks THEY DO NOT HAVE GUIDEBOOKS BUT QR CODES FOR THE SAID GUIDEBOOK. THEIR VERY SMALL COMPARE TO THE AUTHENTIC DECKS.
Do they put the Publishing Company’s name for copyright? For instance those annoying US Game systems borders usually will have their copyright (within good reason to not let the cards to be ripped off that’s why you don’t see many us game system tarot rip offs). To spot the copyright title it’s on the box usually on the back, it will be small but it will have ©️ then the publishing company’s name.
Do you know of the tarot deck is a mini? Sometimes authors and publishers will republish regular decks for minis. Be sure the deck says mini or look up to see if the publishing company republished a tarot mini compare the decks if they match.

1- When I started my research for this project I looked into artists similar to myself that have a quirkier style. Every artist I researched had social media and were very active on it, the main one being Instagram. Instagram seems like it is very important to have to promote yourself and your art as post people these days use Instagram. There is also Facebook, Twitter and TikTok that are used regularly by artists to show their work, but Instagram is the most popular it seems. The artists I looked at such as Gus Fink post regularly and interact with his audience, his profile is eye catching, and his bio caption is to the point telling people what he does and where they can purchase it. When creating my own Instagram I will keep these things in mind and apply them to my profile. I also saw you can make a “link tree” which is one link that takes you to a page of all the persons social media’s/websites, so this is also good to have in your bio on Instagram. There are other platforms you can promote yourself on and sell your work too like Depop, Vinted and Etsy, they allow you to make a profile where people can learn more about you and also browse your art. I think this is really good to advertise yourself as lots of people use these apps and will does across your work compared to your own private website where people have to go there themselves rather than come across your work.
Some unique ways of promotion that stood out to me during my research were giving free gifts such as stickers, prints, keychains or other items that have your art and social media on them. This is a very good way for people to remember you and to give people a good impression and I’m the future they may become a client. Another fun way to get your work out there is to take part in an “art drop”, this is when you create a piece of art (usually a small print, painting, stickers or whatever you’d like) and you leave it somewhere to be found. The art is left with a note telling the person to keep the art and to follow your social media to check out your other works. This is an exciting way to get people to see your work because you never know who might find it and it gives whoever sees it something to remember too. I have been checking out some artists business cards too and I like when they are very simple, art on the front and information on the back. Other business cards with too much going on and writing everywhere can be confusing. When I create my business card I will remember this and apply it to my design.

I have created my own artist Instagram which has all my information in the bio caption about me and my work. I also added my website there as I already had one. I also added my work to the sites – TikTok, Twitter, threads and Facebook. I thought it would be good to put myself on many different social media platforms to increase the chance of people seeing my work. Although I have a website, I thought it would be good to upload some of my art on Depop for sale so if people come across it, they could go to my profile and check out my Instagram. On Instagram I have just been posting my art and advertising the degree show by posting stories and posts. I also looked into a lot of art markets in Glasgow and applied for some of them and I am waiting to hear back from them; they will be over the summer break so it will be a good chance to show my work.
I got in touch with Cass art and wrote them an email with a proposal for a group exhibition in their Glasgow store, I am waiting to hear back but they followed me on Instagram so I think that might be a good sign. When I was researching ways to promote yourself, I came across “art drops” so I tried it out. I left some of my prints around Glasgow with my Instagram on them and I had a few people message me letting me know they found it which was really nice. I also got very large stickers printed of my art with QR codes next to it, I stuck them all around the city centre in places that I thought were good for my target audience or who I would like to see them. The QR code is very handy, and all people have to do is take a picture or scan it while walking by then they will be directed to your social media or website. There are a lot of stores in Glasgow that stock artists work and I reached out to some and got my work in them, currently my work is at Decadent Riot and The Leith Collective, I only gave them a couple pieces of art each just to see how it will go. I’m very excited and I hope this will get people to see my work. For my business card design I have chosen to make them very simple and just have my art on the front and information on the back, the information I have chosen to put on the back is my name , what kind of art I make , my social media’s and my website and a QR code. I will have these next to my work at the exhibition so hopefully they will be picked up by the visitors. This promotion project taught me a lot about unique ways of getting your work seen and I have been able to apply for events and build an online presence so I am looking forward to what comes next and I hope all the promoting I have done will work.
