The Talos Principle is one of my favorite games of all times. I’ve played it an absurd number of times for a puzzle game – probably five or so.
Two big reasons for this are:
A) there are multiple ways to break the game and they’re fun to find
B) I loved the characters and wanted to explore all the possible ways the story would go.
The Road to Gehenna characters live in my mind rent free and at this point are practically my OCs from all the scenarios I’ve put them through and headcanons I have. But Road to Gehenna will always be one of my favorite game DLCs of all time.
I was leery of a sequel to a game that stood so well on its own, but it was inevitable I would play it.
And I really, really did not like The Talos Principle II. I played it shortly after release and didn’t like many of the characters, didn’t like the huge maps, and didn’t like the story. Objectively I could acknowledge it was a solid game, but it was not what I wanted from a sequel. I never played the DLC.
Still, I always intended to replay it again to see if I warmed up to it, and with the release of The Talos Principle Reawakened now is a good time.
Below are my thought of the game up to 1K’s awakening. I’m not sure how frequent these will be as I play, but there will almost certainly be more. Fair warning: This will include both positives and negatives.
Thoughts through 1K’s awakening:
-As a big fan of ‘let the non-humans be non-human’, there’s a default level of friction between what the writers wanted to do in TP2 and what I wanted.
The writers wanted to use TP2 to explore the nature of humanity; basically an excuse for how humanity might continue after an apocalypse. It just so happens that this time humanity is electronic.
I wanted to explore how machines would exist in a post-human world and what an all-machine society would be.
I’ll try not to let that influence my opinions of the story too much, but there will inevitably be bias.
-TP2 gets a lot of grace for keeping Elohim alive. I loved him in TP1 and I love that he gets to live on.
-TP2’s beginning mirroring TP1’s so closely was extremely clever, and it makes the contrast between TP1 and TP2 Elohim stark. He’s gone through a lot of character development.
-That said, Elohim’s also severely underutilized in TP2.
His exact nature is unclear – is he one intelligence that still has ‘access’ to all the programs? If so, do they realize the implications of them being one large network?
If there’s one Elohim per program, does Elohim ‘change’ with each program? So each one starts with a ‘base’ Elohim that grows as they do.
I’m inclined to go with the former. How he speaks to 1K implies that he’s aware of what’s going on with the world
I also suspect I’ve thought of this more than the writers.
-One more note about Elohim: You solve the puzzles at the start so he can ‘prepare your vessel’.
How does solving puzzles impact your mechanical body? How does Elohim make any changes to your physical body?
Writers, any time you care to expand upon this...
-The damaged terminal broke my heart the first time I saw it. Even though I know Milton is still ‘alive’ in some sense, it still does.
Its presence can’t be a coincidence; Elohim wants the new programs to know Milton’s gone.
As much as the two fought, I believe there was affection too. At least at one point before their relationship fell apart.
-There must be a way to break the starting area so you can get out of bounds, but I haven’t been able to find it.
-Why are the programs using voice to communicate? Voice is far more inefficient than means available to machines. Ping would be far more practical.
And it’s odd when the programs never spoke out loud in TP1. They always communicated silently or via text.
Further, we know the programs do engage in some machine behavior – QR codes rather than written text, for example.
I suspect this is an example of the writers taking it as a given that of course voice is used to communicate. They never considered how machines would.
-From the outset speaking to Neith it’s clear the writers have an agenda. Why weren’t the humans ready for a pandemic but invested so much to prepare for war is not subtle writing.
From what I recall of my last playthrough, I had the impression the writers were very angry about everything related to Covid and used the game to express it. Based on this conversation I suspect this playthrough will confirm it.
This was a major part of what I liked about TP1: It was much more even handed in how it treated each standpoint. While I suspect I know the writers’ preferred stance, one could reasonably play through the game taking one of the others and have a satisfying playthrough.
That’s much more difficult in TP2. One stance was the ‘obviously’ correct one, and you could take one of the others but have a poorer experience for it.
And while I agree with the ‘correct’ stance, that’s not my preferred storytelling.

I’ve Been Trying To Do It Right
It’s official. Hipster music is back in vogue.
I never cared for hipster bands. Nobody did. They’re pretentious and not very skilled. All they do is stomp-clap-guitar-hey, and everyone is overly cheery. That’s why they rub most people the wrong way. 
My issue with that style is a little more specific, and no, it’s not because it was the hold music for 911. They sound like that commercial that the state of Michigan put out when they implemented full-day kindergarten. Saying that out loud sounds forbidden, like I’m confessing something deeply personal. Full-day kindergarten doesn't affect you, you're in ninth grade. You just don't like the idea of full-day kindergarten because you hate change. 
You can’t hate change because it always takes something away from you. You need to learn to embrace change. Instead of saying the change takes something away from you, say that you're displeased because the money for the symphonic band's trip to Singapore you were looking forward to instead got handed over to procure staff and supplies for full day kindergarten.
Except there never was a trip to Singapore. I’m not upset about missing my trip because there wasn’t one. This is different; this laid bare a fundamental problem. 
When the state of Michigan rolled out full day kindergarten, they did something unusual to make sure that the kids had enough space to engage in play based learning - they lengthened the school day. This did nothing to address the crowding and proved to be highly disruptive for me because that meant instead of going 6 hours without food, I went 10 hours without food. Not good.
How does something like this happen? At my high school, kids born in odd-numbered months had lunch periods from 11:00 to 11:30, while those born in even-numbered months had lunch from 11:30 to 12:00. As a leap baby, the school couldn't decide whether to use March 1 or February 28 as the common year birthday, meaning I never got assigned a lunch period.
Today was the first day they rolled out the extended school day. I really thought I was going to make it. 
I got through school without incident, which was good. Better still, I got myself invited to dinner with one of the 12th graders. Susan, Dana’s older sister, just finished college and would start her first job out of school in a week. Dana’s friend Vickie came with them and she brought her boyfriend, Jimmy. They said their parents would arrive a bit later.
I didn’t think we’d be going to Shake Shack. Honestly, I thought we’d be going somewhere a bit nicer. We were celebrating Susan literally walking off the stage into a new job, after all. 
We entered the restaurant and sat down. I took one look at the table and said, “Oh, balls, no”.
“What's the problem?” Dana asked.
“There’s a sticker on the table that tells us to scan the QR code to see the menu and I've been grounded from my phone for three months.”
Jimmy looked at me and shook his head. “It’s not big deal”
“It is a big deal,” I shouted, “You're supposed to provide a menu in a restaurant. You gotta be stupid to do something like this”. I pointed to the QR code. 
Jimmy didn't understand my objection. “How's that a problem?”
“it’s a problem because we're sitting there like idiots, waiting to order without a menu.” 
I got up and began walking around the restaurant asking people what they ordered, how it was, how much it cost, stuff like that. Honestly, it felt like something my grandfather would do.
I saw a couple with a taco salad thing that looked good. “hi, I hope you don't mind, what are you working with, there?” I asked.
They weren't too thrilled by a random teenager sneaking up behind them while they were eating. “Yes, I mind,” the man replied, "Now go bug your parents!” 
OK grouchy, I thought, it's not like I'm a bored 8 year old sticking my fingers in your mashed potatoes.
I made my way over to the table behind them. “That looks good,” I said, eyeing the meal, “What is it?”
“Just ignore her,” the wife from the previous table said, “she's being a menace”
“no I'm not,” I grinned. I turned back to the people at the current table. “anyway…” I continued before the wife interrupted me. “Yes, you're being a menace,” she clapped back, “Why can't you order from the menu like a normal person?”
“I got grounded from my phone and it's a QR menu”
The wife tipped her head to one side. “If you're grounded, then why are you out?” she snipped.
“I'm just grounded from my phone, not grounded-grounded.”
The people from this table gestures to a kiosk. “there's a self checkout there” they said. I don't know whether they were trying to help or they wanted me to leave, but either way, I have no idea how I missed that.
I got to the self checkout, found something that I liked and cost less than the cash I had on hand, got my meal, and returned to the table.
I didn't tip the self checkout. The cashier who gave me the food treated it like a dine and dash. She waited until I finished eating, then followed me outside and forced me to vomit up what I ate. Two guesses where the vom landed. She can't figure out why she got barfed on.  
Susan stepped outside. “You’re throwing up all over the place,” she said, “and whose fault is that?” 
The cashier’s, I thought. I tried to think of all the ways she could spend this to make the events that transpired my fault, but I couldn't think of anything.
I wiped away the vomit from my mouth and looked at Susan. “Alright,” she said, “If you could do it all over again, what would you do differently?”
I shrugged, “I don’t know, I haven’t been alive long enough to have that problem,” Usually, when people ask that question, they're talking about what you could do if you could do your life over again. They aren't talking about a specific point in time, just general regrets. Ninth-graders don't really have stuff like that.
“Wrong answer,” she replied with a serene severity behind her eyes. “Think about what you did.”
My mistake was letting myself go without eating for too long. Beyond that, I've got nothing other than don't poke me after 2:30 in the afternoon.

It is unclear whether the Soviet elite failed to see the darker and more subversive spirit of Prymachenko’s paintings, or merely wanted to avoid drawing attention to it. Regardless, such a reductive view misses a crucial part of what makes Prymachenko’s work extraordinary. 
Pain, fear, and loss figure surreally in many of her paintings, suggested by her use of dark colors, the looks of alarm or menace on the faces of some creatures, and their often uncanny, creepy forms. For Prymachenko, her art was a way to represent the horrors she had witnessed, particularly during the Second World War. “I spent so much time thinking about that war—hours, days, difficult years. I always wanted it to be preserved in my paintings,” she said. “I depicted the war itself, which I saw with my own eyes, its beastly guts.” Even a painting that at first glance may seem cheery can host a lurking threat: “Above everything shines the sun, which resembles a sunflower, but also a clawed beast,” wrote the literary critic Tamara Hundorova.
Prymachenko’s work also manages to engage critically with the Soviet system. Some of her most mesmerizing paintings are the ones she made in the aftermath of the nuclear catastrophe at Chornobyl. The disaster unfolded close to home, literally: Prymachenko’s village of Bolotnya is about thirty miles from the site of the meltdown, and the artist, then in her late seventies, disregarded the Soviet authorities’ guidance to evacuate. One of the most powerful paintings in this series on display at the Ukrainian Museum is a flower-filled homage to the fourth reactor at the Chornobyl power plant. The petals and stems are arranged in beautiful symmetry, recalling Prymachenko’s early embroidery. Doves fly above the reactor while children dressed in traditional Ukrainian clothing bring flowers to lay at its base. The scale of the splendor in the painting conveys the loss at its heart. Evidently, the Soviet authorities feared the impact of that message: none of Prymachenko’s Chornobyl work was made public until after the collapse of the Soviet Union. 
Prymachenko often added long and revealing captions to her work as her career progressed, employing idiosyncratic grammar in her local Polissyan dialect. One caption, written on the back of her Chornobyl painting, is especially moving: “This is how the fourth reactor came to me in a dream. Flowers will grow on it. And children will bring flowers. If the Ukrainian Museum show has a weakness, it’s that the titles and captions of the bulk of the paintings on view can only be accessed via a QR code—and only in simplified form. Take, for example, the painting the museum refers to as Mr. Reagan, Look at This Picture. The work is a Prymachenko beast par excellence—a red, scaly creature with a single penetrating eye and big teeth about to chomp down on a tiny frog. Prymachenko’s full caption reads: “Mister Reagan, look at this picture and understand how heavy and burdensome and foolish the atom is. Take a look and make peace with us so there will be peace on Earth. The atom is beautiful, if you toy with it, you can say goodbye to your family.” There’s a lot to unpack here: the beast, at once ugly and beautiful, could be a nuclear superpower about to crush a delicate creature (the atom? humanity?) in its powerful jaws. But without the full caption, visitors miss these suggestive layers. 
Some of Prymachenko’s imagery may have been dark and disturbing, but we shouldn’t assume that her art was fundamentally pessimistic. Rather, it helps Ukraine’s historical traumas find new expression—and even new meaning—as they are confronted, honored, played with, and transcended.
