In an era dominated by digital interactions, establishing a strong online footprint is not just beneficial—it's essential. Tumblr media
Why Choose MonsterInsights?

But MonsterInsights is not just about ease of use; it’s packed with features that provide deeper insights into your website’s performance. Whether you’re a blogger, a business owner, or an eCommerce entrepreneur, MonsterInsights gives you the tools you need to understand your audience, optimize your content, and grow your business.
Garb MonsterInsights Now!
Key Features of MonsterInsights
1. Real-Time Stats Made Accessible
One of the standout features of MonsterInsights is its ability to present real-time statistics directly on your WordPress dashboard. This means you don’t have to leave your site to monitor important metrics like page views, traffic sources, and user activity. Everything you need is just a click away, allowing you to keep a close eye on your site’s performance as it happens.
2. Enhanced eCommerce Tracking
For online store owners, MonsterInsights offers advanced eCommerce tracking features that help you get a clearer picture of your store’s performance. You can track key metrics like revenue, conversion rates, top-performing products, and more. This feature works seamlessly with popular eCommerce platforms like WooCommerce and Easy Digital Downloads, giving you the insights you need to optimize your sales funnel and boost revenue.
3. Content Reports for Better Engagement
Understanding which pages and posts resonate most with your audience is crucial for content creators. MonsterInsights provides detailed content reports that show you which pages attract the most visitors, how much time users spend on each page, and which posts drive the most engagement. With this information, you can tailor your content strategy to focus on what works best, ultimately increasing user satisfaction and engagement.
4. Customizable Tracking Features
MonsterInsights goes beyond basic Google Analytics tracking by offering a wide range of customizable tracking options. You can track events like clicks on outbound links, file downloads, affiliate links, and more. The plugin also offers form tracking, allowing you to measure the performance of your contact forms, newsletter signups, and other conversion points.
5. SEO and Performance Insights
Another powerful feature of MonsterInsights is its ability to integrate with Google Search Console. This integration allows you to see which keywords are driving traffic to your site and how well your content is performing in search results. By identifying top-performing keywords and optimizing underperforming content, you can improve your search engine rankings and attract more organic traffic.
6. GDPR Compliance Made Simple
With increasing concerns about data privacy and regulations like GDPR, ensuring that your site is compliant can be challenging. MonsterInsights helps you stay on the right side of the law by offering built-in GDPR compliance features. You can easily anonymize IP addresses, disable tracking for specific users, and integrate with popular cookie consent plugins, ensuring that your analytics practices remain transparent and legal.
7. User-Friendly Interface
One of the reasons MonsterInsights is so popular is its intuitive and user-friendly interface. You don’t have to be a data expert to understand the insights provided by the plugin. The reports are presented in a clear, easy-to-read format, making it simple for anyone to grasp what the data means and how to act on it.

For eCommerce businesses, these insights are even more critical. Problems facing modern artists & creators
I've talked with hundreds of artists and creators about the difficulties they face trying to earn a living from their craft.
This post covers two of the big ones (social media algorithms & bargain basement marketplaces), and what tools are available to grow your business despite these issues.
Social Media Algorithms and Audience Ownership
Social media platforms are a godsend for getting your work in front of potential clients and building a loyal fan base.
However as you will all have experienced, it can take a mastermind to figure out what kind of content the algorithm wants you to post, and if you don't do that you'd be as well throwing your content into the void as even your own followers might not see your post, never mind new viewers.
It also means you don't truly own your audience, if you post something slightly controversial your account could be deleted without warning, or perhaps a billionaire buys the site and everyone flocks to a new platform where you have to start growing your following all over again.
Solution: Build a mailing list
This is perhaps the single best marketing tool available to any business, and is sorely overlooked by artists and creators.
It's cost effective and because you own your mailing list it doesn't matter what's happening on social sites, you can always keep in touch with them.
The tricky part is converting people into mailing list subscribers. However I've seen plenty of creators successfully build one by offering incentives including free digital downloads, early access to content, discounts on your store etc.
Those who sign up to your mailing list would be considered high quality followers, someone who is much more likely to convert to a paid client and buy from you again in the future compared to the average follower on social media.

Losing clients to undercutting competitors on the same platform/marketplace
If you run your business on a marketplace or platform, your clients are one click away from finding plenty of other choices who are willing to undercut everyone else to land a sale.
These sites have no incentive to make sure that traffic you drive to your profile actually purchase from you. Whether a sale is made through your listing or another seller, they collect their fee either way.
They also use uniform designs which reduce you to a generic product listing. Whilst this can simplify the customer experience, it means you have no control over the sales funnel and ability to differentiate yourself, making it harder to convert potential clients into paying customers.
Solution: Direct clients to your own site
Use your own personal website to make sales from, there are plenty of options with no monthly charge and lower fees than marketplaces. This lets you make dedicated marketing pages showcasing your best work to make a client excited about doing business with you, instead of just being a generic product listing.
Take advantage of marketplaces purely for their customer base. Don't rely on them as your sole business platform. This way, any fees you pay are worthwhile to generate sales you wouldn't have had otherwise.

Interested in more?
There's plenty more I have to share on this topic, including:
How to properly use Print on Demand without getting ripped off
Streamline managing your business so you spend more time creating and growing your business.
How to better utilize your brand to connect with clients and increase sales
So let me know if you’re interested and I’ll get writing!
Transparency
I'm building https://art.page to solve these exact issues, with the goal to create the best all in one site builder for artists and creators that makes running your business easy.

TADC: Pomni Through the Looking Glass (and What She Found There)
@endomentendo, be glad that you have inspired me, but prepare to be spited cause that's exactly why I'm writing this. If I got most stuff wrong including the tech (look I had to improvise the looking glass okay no one really cares if it's different from yours (wow for once I don't care about getting canon right)) I'm probably just a little sorry.
Also if Pomni's name is the same in the real world and digital wonderland, then I'm glad I got this right then.
But for anyone else who's also enjoying this, please enjoy! And maybe leave a little comment on what you thought; I haven't written a full-length story, much less a one-shot in a long time, and I'm excited to be back into my natural talent of writing!
(P.S. before we move on: I might write a little thing based on Endo's little opening comic for in Wonderland…)
(Also apologies if my writing style feels old, I had just reread the original Through the Looking Glass recently lol)
——————————————————————————————————
The little white kitty robot had been malfunctioning lately. At least, that's what her sister had been saying based on her own observations. And this time, the little thing had been moving on its own, all because a simple move of its shelf had flicked a switch and now it was just about to fall off said shelf. When it was close to hitting the ground, it was just barely caught by the only worker in the store that day, Pomni Gardner.
"There you go," she smiled tiredly, petting the furry kitty's head and shelfing it again. In all her five years of working at Cable and Analog Convenience, the little robot kitty she had made in high school was sometimes her rare source of company when her sister was out of town making supply trips. That, and the other two robot kittens on display only. But the little white kitten, which she had named Snowy, was one of the more active ones due to a little floor accident she figured was the cause of her random turn-ons these days.
Pomni leaned on the counter with a sigh, looking over the blank account of the past few mundane days on the computer for the store's records. No one had come into the store in a long time, so she had mostly felt that there was no need to come in at all. But ever since her sister's insistence for her to take her place just a day before she left, Pomni hadn't really had a choice in the manner.
She leaned back in her chair and stared up thoughtfully at the ceiling, desperate to get away from her boredom. It hadn't been a very long time ago since she had somehow dreamt of a strange place, created of her own imagination yet of very real sensations somehow. The little white clown with the giant pocket watch hopping from monitor to monitor and ending up in one that hadn't worked in years… she still wasn't sure it was such a wise choice to follow it and fall into the small screen, with a new form that forced her to question her new identity: was she the same person she was that morning, or a different one entirely? Hey, English class was finally coming in handy.
Even thought it was all a dream in the end, it was a very strange one. Even stranger, somehow she had woken up with a VR headset on her head, which she suspected her sister had placed on her to try and shake her awake, yet it hadn't really helped much. But she appreciated the effort, even if she hadn't asked her about it yet. The whole thing was very curious though.
Pomni groaned, more out of exasperation than anything else. She grabbed the little white cat off the nearby shelf and flicked the switch, watching it move around the table in a cute and almost realistic manner like an actual kitten. She had been quite proud of being the sole builder of this little mechanism, even if she had to use a few parts from their own store when it was only her sister running it back in the day. But in the end, she never really noticed, so it was all fine.
"You know, Snowy," she started, leaning her head on her hand as her elbow settled on the counter. She chuckled at the cliche nickname, her bored smile growing wider as the little cat came over to her hand and gave a small robotic purr. "It was the darndest thing, that dream I had a few months ago. It only feels like yesterday I had become a very different person, or atleast, that's what my body experienced. It was more of a physical change than anything. But can it really be considered physical if it was inside of a digital world? Anyway, it still gave me a weird existential crisis."
Pomni pulled the little white robot kitten onto her lap, feeling it settle there like a regular cat as she began to stroke its head. She and her sister, the only employees at C&A Convenience, weren't allowed to bring in any pets for the sake of their customers, so it was nice to have this little girl for company, even if she wasn't the real thing. "I wonder what it would be like to have you with me, Snowy. What would a little robot cat be like in that strange digital world? Would you be able to talk and be your own person, or would you still be as you are now? Gosh, when did I start asking so many questions?"
Pomni rubbed her own head, returning to petting the little kitten afterwards. She directed her attention to the newly imported wide-screen TV, which her sister had repaired with the help of their uncle. Now it looked just like new, which she really appreciated as she smiled and admired her reflection for just a moment. The screen was so big and clear, it was just like looking through a giant mirror. It was these kind of televisions that they said had images so vivid and lifelike it was like they were jumping out of the screen or they could pull you into the video itself. Pomni had never had a chance to see what that was like, and there was sadly no video player to plug into the TV, so she was just going to imagine it best she could.
"Could you imagine if an image could actually pull you into it, Snowy?" She said with a light chuckle, putting the little robot on the counter and standing up to get her fourth cup of coffee. She sat back down and started sipping her cup, looking over at Snowy who she had shut down so it wouldn't waddle off the counter and fall again. "It'd probably be a weird experience, just like when I accidentally fell through the monitor as if it were a hole in the ground. Just imagine the whole thing—the space just warping around you, like a vacuum cleaner, slowly taking you into a different place…"
Pomni was surprised at her own bravery to describe this fascinating and yet horrifying scenario, but not as surprised as she was to see the lights around her dim and the TV slowly flickering to life. She put down her cup on the counter and carefully leaned closer to the screen, which showed just a little bit of static and that same annoying buzzing sound you'd hear when the TV wouldn't work and all you'd get was said static. But as she leaned in closer to the screen for curiosity's sake, she saw the static was like a misty veil, like a lacy white curtain or the kind of mist you'd see on your window on a cold or snowy day.
"What in the…?"
Out of instinct, she reached out her hand to the screen and almost drew her hand back at its warmth. It wasn't an unwelcoming warmth, like a boiling pot or a fever, but it was a strange warmth nonetheless. And the screen seemed to ripple where she touched it… how curious.
She tried it again, keeping her hand there for longer. Using her other hand, she wiped at the misty veil of static, and drew back with a sound gasp.
For in the place of her normal reflection, of a young human 25-year-old woman, was the same character she had become in that dream of a digital Wonderland.
With a frustrated frown, she tried to pull her hand away from the screen, which she found was soundly stuck and was even beginning to sink into it. Gosh darn it, why didn't she learn anything from the last time?! Was this about to become a new adventure that she didn't want to be dragged into? Why did she ever come close to this TV in the first place…
Her reflection seemed to mirror her distress, even though she was yet to take that form—which she would soon take if she didn't pull back. But the warm feeling of her hand going through and next her arm was almost like rapidly falling into quicksand—no way out unless someone pulled you free.
And with a silent curse falling from her lips, Pomni was sucked through the television screen, which was as clear as the looking glass, before it was as silent and blank as it was before.

Official photos of the upcoming LEGO Dungeons and Dragons Red Dragon’s Tale set (21348) are officially here! Stacking up to nearly 3,800 pieces, the upcoming set celebrates the RPG’s 50th anniversay with six all-new minifigures, a giant Cinderhowl red dragon, and tons of other fiends.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The set has officially been named LEGO Ideas 21348 Dungeons and Dragons Red Dragon’s Tale – a departure from the fan-submitted model, which was called Dragon’s Keep: Journey’s End by original builder Lucas Bolt (known as BoltBuilds). The differences between the model that’s actually hitting store shelves and the original creation aren’t all that noticeable, but there are some adjustments!
LEGO’s first Dungeons and Dragons kit celebrates 50 years of the role-playing game from Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro. It stacks up to 3,745 pieces and assembles a fantasy scene. There’s a medieval building on the left, which is integrated into the stone of a dilapidated castle. There’s an extra 700 bricks from the original version. That increase goes towards a more detailed model, as well as giving some more love to the side build.
We’ve covered the Dungeon, but what about the Dragon? The LEGO set includes a massive giant Cinderhowl red dragon. It can perch on the castle tower, or just fly around in your own little adventure.
Alongside the actual model, the new LEGO Dungeons and Dragons set includes a handful of minifigures, as well as creatures for them to do battle with. There are six adventurer minifigures, including an Orc Rogue, Gnome Fighter, Elf Wizard, Dwarf Cleric, a Bard, and more. You also get three LEGO skeletons, too. The kit also includes a Beholder, as well as the Displacer Beast. We also get a small glimpse of a brick-built Gelatinous cube and the Owlbear. It’s a really solid mix of figures and beats for them to do battle with.
Tumblr media
In true Dungeons and Dragons fashion, the LEGO set also includes a digital download for an adventure to recreate with the included figures.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You’ll be able to buy the LEGO Dungeons and Dragons Red Dragon’s Tale set (21348) starting next month. It officially goes on sale to the public on April 3, but LEGO Insiders will be able to get this one early – as per usual. It’ll drop at midnight on April 1 for those with a free account. It debuts at $359.99. The LEGO storefront page is at this link.

Plus, a Collectible Minifigure Series on the way
Alongside the main LEGO Ideas set, the collaboration will be continuing over to a Collectible Minifigure Series based around Dungeons and Dragons. The lineup will debut later this fall as a second installment of the 50th anniversary action and will include 12 different characters from the role-playing game. That includes Tieflings, druids, bars, and even the Mindflayer. The LEGO Group has now confirmed that it will launch in September.
Here’s a full breakdown of the Dungeons and Dragons Collectible Minifigure Series. Each of the blind box LEGO figures will sell for $4.99, and includes a minifigure alongside a fittingly-themed accessory.
Tiefling Sorcerer with Red Baby Dragon
Golden Dragonborn Paladin with Shield
Tasha the With Queen with Cauldron
White Aarakocra Ranger with Dog
Mindflayer with Intellect Devourer
Dwarf Barbarian with Axe
Strahd von Zarovich with Sword
Githyanki Warlock with Knife
Halfling Druid with Bird
Halfling Bard with Lute
Lady of Pain with Cube

My first job was at the grocery store that my parents shopped at during my entire childhood. I was just thinking about it and it wasn't until after I'd grown up and moved away that I realized it was. Rather Strange Actually.
So I think it was built sometimes in the 1960's, as what the builders assumed was the vanguard of a bold and innovative movement of urban design post highway boom. (Spoiler: it was not.) The highway was in a sunken trench next to the older railroad tracks. And they decided: let's build the grocery store OVER the highway.
I have created this diagram for your viewing pleasure:

So, in a move that would please modern urbanists, the store did come right up to the sidewalk (which in turn was on the edge of the little cluster of commercial development around the commuter rail station). There was a large parking lot next to it also along the sidewalk, but what can you do. The first floor of the building- at least most of the front of it- contained the small retail also beloved of modern urbanists.
In a move that would displease anyone conversant with the ADA act, to get to the actual grocery store, you entered a lobby in amongst the small retail, and were immediately confronted with an escalator going up and stairs going... well, both up and down, but in practice, down. Proceeding to the top of the stairs, you found the shopping carts, which never went outside.
So, you'd proceed with your shopping cart out to the produce section, which extended a fair way over the highway. from there it was a fairly normal grocery store actually. From inside you could not in fact tell that half the building was. Extended over the highway and supported by pillars. But it was.
Anyway. Once you finished your shopping you'd get in a checkout lane. And the cashier would, as normal, ring up your groceries. And the bagger would -- as I thought was a common and ordinary variation within normal until I was about twenty years old-- put your groceries in a sturdy metal bin that held about 3 bags of groceries. Then they would carry each bit over to the conveyor belt which took hem into the Mysterious Hole, and bring back another bin. Each bin was labeled with a three digit number. After you had paid, the cashier would hand you a stack of very sturdy plastic cards with those numbers on them. (They were hefty and pleasant to hold in the hand. A fond sensory memory.)
Then you'd go down the stairs, carrying your cards but no groceries.
Once safely ensconced in your car, you would enter. The Tunnel. Which ran at regular ground level under the grocery store, behind the urbanist-approved-small-retail, with the entrance in the parking lot. There, you would wait in the Car Line. And then, you (whether 'you' was the driver or 'you' was the small child lucky enough to be allowed to sit on the driver's side back seat and be entrusted with the cards, an honor and privilege to be taken in turns) would hand your cards to a strapping young man, who would then find your bins, and load your groceries into your trunk for you. Then you would proceed out of the tunnel on the other side, trigger the warning buzzer as you crossed the sidewalk, and get back on the street.
This was all VERY exciting as a child, but you know. in a normal sort of way. Highpoint of the week, really.
When I was 17 I got a summer job at this grocery store. I was a grocery bagger, which was a position that could NOT be combined with cashier, on account of managing the metal bins and bringing them over to the conveyor belt. At no point during this period of employment was I privy to the Mysteries Of The Hole, though I presume a hidden set of further conveyor belts was involved. I was also not employed in The Tunnel, as I was a minor (and I suspect, as allegedly A Girl, though of course this could not have been official policy in the late nineties and early aughts). I did at last understand that the cards were matched with the bins by the simple expediency of the strapping young men putting the matching card back in the bin before they sent them on the presumable Up Conveyor Belts.
When I was 19 and doing a share of the grocery shopping alone for the first time, I discovered first hand how incredibly untenable this system was when you did not have a driver's license. Seriously, I had SO much cargo room on my bike but I could only buy as much groceries as I could carry down the stairs at one throw. Super annoying.
I haven't been back in at least fifteen years. I wonder if they have self-service checkout lanes and how the fuck the system works with that. The area's gone from 'fairly well off neighborhood' to 'this area is inhabited by the fuckoff rich' so maybe they just adequately staff their checkout lanes and charge out the nose for it idk. Perhaps someday I will return just to find out, but probably not.
I still do drive under the produce section from time to time though.

Mistakes You Might Be Making With Your Watch
Tumblr media
In an age where the global market is more accessible than ever, Indian businesses stand at the threshold of an unprecedented opportunity. The digital revolution has paved the way for local enterprises to expand their horizons beyond traditional boundaries, bridging the gap between local markets and global platforms. This transformation is not just about reaching a wider audience but also about embracing the diversity and dynamism of the global marketplace.
The first step in this journey is leveraging digital technology to create a robust online presence. For many local businesses, the digital leap begins with establishing a digital storefront and utilizing social media and e-commerce platforms to connect with customers worldwide. This not only amplifies their reach but also enables them to showcase their products and services on a global stage, competing directly with international brands.
However, expanding into global markets requires more than just an online presence; it demands an understanding of the diverse needs and preferences of a global customer base. This is where data analytics and digital marketing strategies come into play, helping businesses tailor their offerings and marketing messages to resonate with audiences across different cultures and regions. By adopting a customer-centric approach and leveraging digital tools for market research and engagement, businesses can effectively navigate the complexities of the global market.
Collaboration and partnerships also play a crucial role in this expansion. By forming strategic alliances with international distributors, retailers, and other businesses, Indian enterprises can gain valuable insights into new markets, access established distribution networks, and build a strong global brand. Digital platforms facilitate these collaborations, making it easier for businesses to find and connect with potential partners around the world.
In this global expansion journey, platforms like Topiko emerge as pivotal allies for Indian businesses aiming for international acclaim. Topiko provides a comprehensive array of digital tools that demystify the digital transition, facilitate engagement with global audiences, and streamline cross-border operations. Designed with the global ambitions of Indian entrepreneurs in mind, Topiko’s features are tailored to support businesses as they step onto the world stage. Portraits of Queen West
Tumblr media
Tomorrow (September 14), I'm hosting the EFF Awards in San Francisco. On September 22, I'm (virtually) presenting at the DIG Festival in Modena, Italy.
Tumblr media
Portraits of Queen West is Kevin Steele's extraordinary photo-book, a work of "sequential art" featuring time- and space-series of a single – rather glorious – stretch of Toronto's Queen Street West:
https://crowdfundr.com/queenwest
Steele himself is as extraordinary as his book. I first ran into him through Mackerel Multimedia, the pioneering Canadian multimedia shop that he co-founded in the early 1990s – one of those art-school kids who discovered the Mac, fell in love with the radical possibilities of digital art, and changed the world:
https://craphound.com/nonfic/mackerel.html
Steele's pioneering work – in Hypercard, then CDROMs, then Flash – helped define the look-and-feel of the old, good internet; an urbanist feel that owed a debt to Toronto's most beloved adopted urbanist, Jane Jacobs. Steele and Mackerel made things that were beautiful and human-centered, human-scaled and human-adaptable.
Not for nothing, Hypercard presaged the web's critical "view source" affordance, which allowed people to copy, modify, customize and improve on the things that they found delightful or useful; this affordance was later adapted by other human-centered projects like Scratch, and is a powerful tonic against enshittification.
Mackerel didn't survive the first great multimedia mass-extinction, but it launched the careers of a whole generation of talented web-writers and builders, and not just its former employees, but also the millions who were touched by its work.
I haven't seen Steele in person in decades, but I follow his work – not as a multimedia artist, but as an urban photographer. Kevin and I follow each other on Flickr – the once great and great again photo-sharing site that survived decades of abuse from Yahoo and Verizon before being taken indie and rescued by the Smugmug folks.
Back in November 2010, Kevin started posting photos of individual storefronts on Queen Street West to Flickr. They were painstakingly labeled and dated, and they multiplied. By the end of the year, there were a couple dozen of them:
https://www.flickr.com/search/?sort=date-posted-desc&safe_search=1&tags=queenstreetwest&user_id=92518741%40N00&view_all=1&min_upload_date=1073368800&max_upload_date=1294552799
A year later, there were hundreds:
https://www.flickr.com/search/?sort=date-posted-desc&safe_search=1&tags=queenstreetwest&user_id=92518741%40N00&view_all=1&min_upload_date=1073368800&max_upload_date=1326088799
Today, there are over 1,200 of these:
https://www.flickr.com/search/?sort=date-taken-desc&safe_search=1&tags=queenstreetwest&user_id=92518741%40N00&view_all=1
Now, I know Queen Street West very well. It was once one of Toronto's most bohemian neighborhoods, where my paternal grandfather's fellow refugee Benny Yacht has his schmata shop and where my maternal grandfather took my mother and her siblings to trade in their comics for credit at cramped, crammed used bookstores.
I discovered Queen West as a pre-teen, thanks to Bakka Books – now Bakka Phoenix – the oldest science fiction bookstore in the world. I haunted Bakka, and, on the way, found myself drawn into the other stores around it:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/doctorow/48476314831/in/photolist-2gRFMvz-2oJJDCY
There was Silver Snail, a massive comics shop, but a bounty of used bookstores, vintage clothing stores, thrift shops, the indescribably great electronics store Active Surplus and, later, nightclubs like the Rivoli, the Diamond, the Bovine Sex Club and the Zoo Bar.
For a critical decade of my life and more, the stretch of Queen Street that Steele obsessively documented in his Flickr feed had been the center of my life. I watched it thrive and grow – and then collapse into a kind of self-parody, as the original landlords (like Bakka's landlord) died, and their failsons and faildaughters kicked out longstanding tenants and replaced them with multinational "brands" that turned Queen West into a less-convenient, open-air version of the sterile Eaton Centre mall.
Steele, it turns out, was having similar feelings of dismay as the organic, grown, chaotic delight became groomed, sterile and homogenized. After a 2008 fire wiped out an entire block of Queen West – including Duke's Cycle, a city institution that eventually shuttered after more than a century of service – Steele began his documentation project.
Steele had started documenting the street in 2001, but that fire turned a hobby into a project. Over and over again, Steele returned to the street, meticulously photographing the same storefronts, capturing a time-series that eventually spanned 16 years, from 2001-2017. Steele gradually stitched these photos together into panoramic collages, reproducing whole blocks:
https://www.flickr.com/search/?sort=date-taken-desc&safe_search=1&tags=linearpanorama&user_id=92518741%40N00&view_all=1
It is these "linear panoramas" that form the backbone of Portraits of Queen West. The book runs 162 pages, and it meant to be read forwards and backwards – start from the front cover and turn the pages to see the north side of the street, along with insets showing details (like the storied Graffiti Alley), and then flip the book over and start again, seeing the south side.
For more than a decade, I've thrilled to my unexpected trips through Steele's time-machine, as he posted his space-and-time-series images of a vanished urbanism, an old, good city that paralleled the old, good web. I got a peek at a PDF of the new book that collects these extraordinary image and immediately pre-ordered a copy.
Steele and his publisher Black Eye Books are crowdfunding presales of the book on Crowdfundr; the book is CAD40 with shipping (there's also a deluxe edition at CAD55, which comes with a signed bookplate and six postcards):
https://crowdfundr.com/queenwest
After a string of ghastly mayors – each finding new depths of depravity, selfishness and mismanagement to plumb – Toronto just elected its first progressive mayor in a generation, the wonderful Olivia Chow, for whom I used to ring doorbells support of her city council campaigns:
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/jun/27/olivia-chow-wins-election-as-torontos-first-chinese-canadian-mayor
Anything that can't go on forever eventually stops. The enshittification of the old, good web continues apace, but there has never been more energy to build a new, good internet – and banish the enshitternet of Big Tech to the scrapheap of history.
In the same way, Toronto's much eroded urbanism, pluralism and liveability are both at their lowest ebb in my lifetime – and also at their most hopeful moment of the century. In 1998, the dead-eyed Romneyoid Premier of Ontario Mike Harris "amalgamated" Toronto with its suburbs, putting it at the mercy of car-addled out-of-towners in an act of gerrymandering that all-but-guaranteed that city residents' political choices would be swamped by suburbanites who could be convinced to vote for laughable Tory bumblefucks like Rob Ford.
Overcoming the gerrymander required a massive turnout – not merely a supermajority, but an ultramajority of politically motivated, organized, committed, pissed off Torontonians; Chow's election is a minor miracle that part of the wave of other historic reversals, like the DoJ awakening from its coma to drag Google into court on antitrust charges.
We are a long way away from making a new, good internet that's a worthy successor to the old, good internet, and at least as far from a new, good Toronto that the people of the old, good Toronto would have built but for Tory wreckers and the Christmas-voting turkeys who elevated them to office. But both are possible – and both demand that we fight for them.
Steele's beautiful photodocumentary of one slice of that old, good city doesn't just memorialize the world we lost – it is inspiration for a world that is ours to win.
