But in all honestly, I kinda like this simplified version of Quickcell. Makes it way easier to draw his markings

Been a while since I updated. Quick doodle with some story for y'all
First | Previous | Next
After the thorough explanation Vermon’s curiosity was satisfied. Though he still wanted to know who attacked them and why. Quickcell didn’t volunteer the information he knows about them either. He’d like to hide in his pretend obliviousness a little while. It’s not like he’s specifically being hunted down so all the others need to know for now is they are in danger and they need to flee. Vermon’s most burning question has been answered now so he drifted off to sleep at a speed Quickcell would only hope to experience. The adults and the kids were sleeping too. But Quickcell has been awakened and now his mind wont let him sleep again. His thoughts centered around survival. He needs resources, shelter, and to predict his enemies movements to secure some semblance of safety. He started calculating: It took him a bit longer than a day to get to the valley from where his family was attacked, and it took the pursuers around a week to catch up. They just flew from afternoon to dawn. At this rate they bought themselves around 4 days of peace until the pursuers catch up and that’s IF they continue the same pattern of behaviour. But that was not guaranteed and he didn’t have enough data to make any predictions. He jolted at the sudden feeling of being watched and found Scorcher staring at him from where he laid. His eyes glowed softly as the rays of a full moon fell upon his figure. Now that Quickcell can get a closer look he realised what his red scales hide very well; Scorcher’s skin is a patchwork of old wounds, marks and burnt scales. The kinds of injuries you don’t get from a peaceful life.
“You’ve been through a lot haven’t you, little one?” – he said, his voice gentle like the morning breeze.
Qickcell was speechless. He was amazed about the number of scars this dragon has, the goofy exterior he’s seen when he saw them playing in the sky, his gentle words, but most importantly his eyes. Those eyes spoke of the same hardships he’s been experiencing. A life of trouble and danger. Eyes that know how to survive. Not just survive, but fight for survival! For the first time in maybe forever, Quickcell’s nerves calmed as he stared into those piercing orange eyes. And although he hadn’t wanted to share the information he knew with Vermon, somehow, he started into the whole story of how he got here.
“We were on the run. We were always on the run...Though at some points it did feel like it was just a fun family trip. We’ve met a few different dragons on our way. But one day we had guests, it was 3 very big dragons. They had 2 legs and were using their wings to assist them in walking. They were mean. They told us to get out of their territory. And we did. They followed us to their border and let us go. But a few days later they showed up with the same demands. Again and again they did this. For 3 weeks we weren’t able to remain in the same place for more than 2 days. We aren’t built for constant flying, we’re built for speed. This exhausted all of us. And then they decided they had enough of us. Attacked us brutally. They got the jump on mom and when dad went to help, the dragon that pinned mom down ignited himself on fire. I’ve never seen something like that. It burned my dad’s mouth. I am not sure if he can still shoot at all. But my parents told me to run. To find a safe place and wait for them. That they’ll be fine, I just need to get out. I flew as far as I could. When I had to land to rest and hunt, that’s when I met Vermon.” – he didn’t realize but while telling the story, tears started down his face. He quickly wiped them off and steeled himself. – “Anyway, if those dragons are now here we have to go as far as we can!” – he looked up but only saw a sea of red as Scorcher pulled him into a big hug.
“Don’t worry kiddo. You just relax and let the adults handle it.”
Quickcell found unexpected comfort in Scorcher’s words. He’s heard almost the exact same sentence from his own dad but it was somehow more reassuring coming from Scorcher. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough to get him to sleep through the night. He woke up to every single sound the night has produced. The only reason he could fall back asleep is because Scorcher was curled up around him and though still half-asleep he was clearly monitoring all the sounds around them.

Been a while for an update of my story.
I swear at some point the traditional doodles I make for these turn into digital ones!
Story under the cut!
First | Previous | Next
The little ones have not seen this many dragons in one place before. And all of them the same species as them too! They looked around frantically trying to take in the atmosphere, determine the pecking order, and getting distracted by everything. Vermon was now playing with 3 different babies as well as the white dragon. Raider has started to imitate the big dragons and act out how they held themselves. In the adult corner Scorcher has just finished telling the tale of what has happened to them so far, finishing with: “So I hope you have some information about this and allow us to lay low in your territory for a bit. At least until the kids rest enough to be able to continue flying.”
“If they were coming from over the cliff they might have been another clan of dragons. From what you’ve told me they might be trying to expand their territory which puts us at danger for sure. I’ll have to up the amount of training everyone receives and...” – he trailed off. – “Anyway, you’re welcome to stay but you gotta earn your keep. You’ll have to help provide food for the hatchlings and help in keeping the territory under control. In exchange you get protection and some training for those kids of yours. That sound fair?”
“Completely fair.” – replied Scorcher.
And so it has been decided. The gang will join the daily workings of this group of dragons while they get some protection from their pursuers. Lumina was tasked to hunt for the babies while Scorcher joined the patrols and hunting for the adults. Vermon was a natural at keeping the little ones occupied, and Raider has joined the training for the young fighters. Everything seemed to go well with their integration into the clan. Only one question remained: Where is Quickcell? But that question was not answered so easily. In the next few days the family started settling into the routine of the clan, while adults kept an eye out on the stray little one. Scorcher and Lumina kept asking the kids where Quickcell was and all they got back was “he’s around”. With Raider’s stubbornness and Vermon’s training in keeping his mouth shut these past few days, they were getting nowhere. But the clan’s adults couldn’t fault him. They knew exactly why Quickcell was hiding and commended his resourcefulness and stealth. Scorcher and Lumina were just worried but the kids told them he doesn’t want them to see him because he was afraid they’d out his location. Which wasn’t a bad guess. While the clan understood his motivation, they still needed to know who he was and keep track of his movements. Otherwise their ability to get the drop on other dragons that come into their territory and are actually hostile is significantly inhibited. But for a few weeks, this remained the status quo. Vermon was amazed at the amount of dragons living in one cluster. Each day there were at least a few new faces he hasn’t seen before coming to the pond to report back, fuel up or just socialize. He was amused by the newcomers and sometimes went with them to see other parts of the territory. Raider tagged along in the exploration too, whenever she wasn’t busy with training. One such time they were accompanying a lady named Jay. She’s been flying for a while and was about to leave the forest when a voice rang out from behind them.
“Don’t go that way, come back!” – It was Infern doing the rounds with the guards. All 4 of them turned around and landed on a nearby rock. The 2 kids, Jay and a friend of hers. They waited until the guards landed too.
“We don’t go out of the forest, it marks our territory. Once the forest ends, our territory also ends.” – explained Infern to the kids, all of whom sounded their understanding. He nodded approvingly. Jay and her friend said their goodbyes and flew up. But they were still going outside the forest.
“Wait! They just said not to go that way!” – Vermon shouted after them. Jay landed back again.
“It’s alright little one, I’m not from your clan. Your rules don’t apply to me. I’m going back to my home.” – she explained while walking around Vermon. – “I’m only here to woo your chieftain anyway.” – She said while rubbing against Infern like a cat, while Infern gave the unamused face of someone who just heard a bad pun. – “ And now that my business is done, I shall return to my den to sleep.”
That wasn’t a possibility Vermon even considered. Other clans that are friendly enough with this one to go over their lands any time they want. Raider was actually delighted with this information. Diplomatic relations were as much her tea as fighting friends were. She has discovered something else she could learn about here. The kids were sent back to base while the guards continued their route.

Been a while, this is now quite old actually. I'll try and update more frequently so you guys catch up.
The morning came with unpleasant beams of light to the eyes. Their cave was facing East it seems. Quickcell was up with the sun while Vermon and Raider still slept like new-borns. Lumina, their mother, was curled up around them, awake but not moving so the kids have some more time in dreamland. Scorcher also woke with the sun and joined Quickcell who was furiously smelling everything in front of the cave. He took a few whiffs of air himself and looked towards West, determination in his eyes. Quickcell became a bit more convinced about his theory that Scorcher has a past full of unrest, to say the least, and that Vermon and Raider probably don’t know this. Lumina finally managed to escape the kids without waking them and joined the others in front of the cave.
“Not that look again, we’re not doing that! You promised they’d be brought up different!” – she started.
“Don’t worry Lum, I’ve got a plan, we’ll just stay for a few days and then be on our way. At least the kids will get some social interaction.” – he glanced over to Quickcell who was at that moment fixating on red berries, smelling furiously and keeping his cloak all the way up. –“Draconia knows they need it” – Scorcher concluded.
Quickcell, not even registering the fact that he could be included in the “kids” category, moved onto a small shrubbery to smell.
“Quickcell stop, we won’t be here for long. You don’t need to get familiar with the terrain.”
He ignored the advice and moved onto a tree.
“I trust you Scorcher.. Just please keep your promise in mind.” – Lumina replied.
“I will Lum. Just follow my lead and everything will be fine.”
Lumina shot a last worried glance at Scorcher and went to wake up the kids.
Vermon shot out the cave after 10 minutes of complaining that he had to wake up. “Food, food, food!” he kept repeating. Then he had to face the disappointment that they’ll need to fly without breakfast.
“Hey kids! Don’t you worry! You know where we’re going? A place where food flies into your mouth!” – Scorcher patted Vermon on the head, scooped up Raider to tickle her belly then threw both of them into the sky. He took off after them. Lumina at the back of the line was having a bit of difficulty with making sure all kids were following Scorcher as she could barely see Quickcell most of the times. But as she realised she doesn’t really need to keep track of Quickcell at all. Unlike the other 2, he was flying in a straight line and firmly held his spot in the formation. Something her little ones haven’t had to learn so far... and she hoped they’d never have to.
They flew 2 more days in a similar fashion. Thought half of a day collectively was spent on finding food. At the dusk of the third day, Scorcher finally spoke the magic words.
“We’re here.”
Where they were? Where have they arrived? Vermon did not care. He just wanted to land for more than a night already. Quickcell and Raider on the other hand were very much curious. But as the no unnecessary speaking rule was still felt in the air, they remained quiet.
“Everyone should land at that pond, try to rest a bit and get some water.” – instructed Scorcher. “I’ll deal with the company..”
Directly in front of them 3 distinct shimmers were breaking up the sunset. They were cloaked, but only barely. They had confidence like they owned the place, and only cloaked out of tradition.
Lumina brought the kids down to the pond. She wanted to help Scorcher but he seemed confident enough, and if there was a fight they definitely didn’t want the kids involved. Since for 3 days she didn’t really need to chaperone Quickcell, and since his cloak was so good, she didn’t notice that Quickcell stayed in the skies. She assumed he’d come with them.
They landed near the pond. The forest had a bit of a clearing around them so everyone kept their cloak up still, to the displeasure of Vermon. But they did get a few licks of water in before being interrupted.
“Who?” – a simple question rung out loud and clear over the water.
Lumina knew they’d be in more danger if she didn’t acknowledge the newcomer.
“I’m Lumina, partner of Scorcher. I have my kids with me.” She answered, trying to give as much information about their identity as possible, with as few words as possible.
“Oh, hi!” – the tone of the response immediately changed. The sound of scales shifting was audible and then a completely white dragon jumped down from a nearby tree. Vermon got scared out of cloak; the dragon landed right next to him. With Vermon now visible Lumina dropped the cloak too to present a more beneficial target if things turned hostile. Raider stayed hidden. If a fight broke out she’ll need to get away undetected. None of them can win a fight against four dragons, but if they scatter, they have more chance of getting away. The white dragon regarded them for a second then let out a call none of them recognized.. nor understood.
Up in the sky a completely different scene unfolded. The three shimmers turned as they reached Scorcher and began flying in formation behind him. Quickcell has already moved further up and behind him, keeping distance while still wanting to hear what’s happening. This time Scorcher broke the silence.
“I’m Scorcher, friend of Infern, Chief of this REALM. We are here to seek shelter.”
“We?” – a deep rumble of a voice sounded from the dragon that was closest to Scorcher.
“Me, my partner, and our kids.”
Before any more words could be exchanged, a weird call sounded from the ground. Quickcell looked down to see a blinding white dot in the setting sunlight standing next to familiar faces. The adult dragons turned in unison and began to approach the lake. Quickcell followed.
Just as Lumina wanted to speak up four dragons descended from the skies, landing with loud thuds. Scorcher immediately stood in front of the pair of them and spread his wings to obscure sight. The other three landed behind the white dragon. A moment of tense waiting, anticipation filling the air. Then the three dragons dropped their cloaks in unison. Scorchers winged furled up immediately as he called out: “Infern!” and went to give a bear hug to the purpleish dragon, who returned the hug with familiarity.
“How have you been bud? What’s this burn on your back? What happened?” – came the barrage of questions from the black and purpleish dragon. As they started to discuss the situation the rest of the dragons dispersed. Some flew off, some decided to hunt for some mice, some went to get a drink of water. The white dragon somehow found a baby dragon, barely able to speak, and started playing around with it. Vermon was liking this new norm. Friendly is something he did very well, and seeing how everyone relaxed he decided to go see the baby. Raider came out of cloak too and began to curiously observe everyone’s movements. She looked out for the ones with scars, they looked like strong fighters. She admired their poise and the power radiating from them. Lumina joined the conversation between Scorcher and this new dragon.

Edited Doodle time! Because my previous upload was a complete mess!

Story continues under the cut!

After a long nap Vermon was up and ready to ask all his questions. But nobody was up besides him. He grumbled for a while but couldn’t bear it; he woke up Quickcell.
“Quickcell, wake up! Come on!” – he shook him.
“Vermon, why? Leave me be!” – squeaked Quickcell still half asleep.
“Please! I want to know what happened! Wake up!” – his whining couldn’t be ignored... Quickcell sat up.

A roar echoed through the valley, followed by 2 more. Quickcell jolted awake in the little crevice he’s been sleeping in. He knew this sound. He knew it way too well. Flashes of the last time he saw his parents appeared in front of his eyes. Danger was here. But just as he was about to bolt out of the crack in the wall, he heard something else. The sound of flames and the sound of a shadow fury getting hurt. He looked up and saw Vermon’s dad narrowly escaping the full effect of a fire column. He was still hurt though. Quickcell didn’t have time to think, instinct took over as one of his own was pursued by 3 others. He cloaked and flew straight up until he was higher than the rest. They moved a bit further ahead so he had to catch up before stabilizing himself and letting go of the first shot. The effort took his cloak away but he didn’t need it anymore anyway. He flew like he’s seen his own dad do it. Close to the ones pursuing, keeping them under a near constant barrage of plasma blasts. While his shots were powerful for his age, he could do little damage to a fully grown fighter. But he didn’t need to be powerful, he just needed to be annoying. He slalomed between the 3 pursuers like a persistent fly, trying to avoid all their bites and fires. He kept his eye on Vermon’s dad, who noticed the commotion and was waiting for a signal. Quickcell charged up a shot to be the most powerful he could produce while breaking off from the pursuers. Then he quickly turned completely and shot what looked to be the leader of the gang. A clear hit. The scorch marks were undeniable. The leader shrieked with frustration as it switched targets and started after Quickcell. The others faltered as their leader abandoned the pursuit of the adult dragon. This was the moment, Scorcher dove into the treeline activating his cloak. Though he was only able to keep it up for a moment, it was enough to get out of eyesight. The 2 remaining pursuers caught onto their prey fleeing and dove to the trees in search of him. In the meantime Quickcell was desperately manoeuvring in the air, trying to dive too. The leader of the group wouldn’t let him though. Every time he turned towards the ground the dragon would let out a blanket of fire under him. There was no choice, he needed to hide before getting into the trees. He went invisible making his best effort to keep his hide from shimmering. He couldn’t use the shadows, so he’d use the light. He climbed higher and higher until he saw the dragon squint from the sun and took the opportunity. He fully committed to the dive even if it meant flying through the fire. He had no other choice. But fortunately the other lost him as he’d hoped and thus Quickcell was gone with the wind.

It's been a while! I just wanna update my story! I don't have topical art for this so you're getting momma's girl Raider :3
Story under the cut
First | Previous | Next
The following days were spent with playing around, hunting practice and Raider trying to get the drop on Quickcell but never succeeding at it. Quickcell was quite annoyed at first at this but as the days went it actually got easier to predict Raider’s movements – though he didn’t tell this to her – and thus appreciated the practice he was getting at detecting her. For various reasons. However, all good things must come to an end as Quickcell learned, and trouble caught up to him.
The skies were orange. But the sun was already up in the sky. Vermon was quite confused. His dad left to investigate, leaving the 2 little ones with their mom. She was visibly worried. It made Vermon worry too. His sister was sticking close to their mom’s side knowing full well something is amiss. Vermon in typical Vermon fashion did not get the memo and was standing like a meercat on top of their cave entrance. And then came the dreaded call. Their dad signalling that there’s danger, they need to leave immediately and go on the run. Vermon was still looking out to the horizon trying to spot their dad while Raider and their mom, Lumina immediately headed the call. Lumina looked back urging Vermon to get off the ground. But then he saw it: his dad swooping in from the horizon, but his cloak was off. He was flying visible to all. He got really concerned and flew off immediately, leaving Raider and Lumina to themselves and meeting up with his dad. His dad scolded him as usual for not heeding his warning but Vermon was too preoccupied to hear it. He looked his dad over and saw his scales still ablaze on his back. A scorch mark running down his spine from his shoulder blades to the back of his wings. He was mortified. He was brought back to reality again by something slamming into him. He looked to the direction of the force and saw slight shimmering of the air.
“Get moving! You’re slowing us down!” – came Quickcell’s voice of all dragons! His cloak was better than his dad’s usually is, even when flying! He was nearly undetectable. The shock of him being here got Vermon to speed up and stick to Quickcell as he sped away, his dad in tow. All 5 of them went on the run, with 4 of them in front invisible cloak active, while their dad, Scorcher a bit further away, still waiting for his scales to cool down enough for the cloak to be activated. Vermon had so many questions: Why is Quickcell here? How did him and his dad meet? How did his dad get burned so much? Who is pursuing them? But he knew full well he is not allowed to speak at the moment. That, and he was already struggling flying invisible, if he spoke his cloak would drop. He wasn’t the only one with questions though. Raider had questions flying around is her mind too: Who attacked us? Can we survive outside of the valley? We are heading West, will there be enough food that way? Does her mom know where they’re heading? However, she also knew not to speak right now.
They flew in complete silence until they couldn’t fly anymore. Throughout the journey Vermon and Raider took turns on their mom’s back so they can rest and cover larger ground. They found a cave big enough for all of them and hid in there for the day, resting, healing.

New Story drop!

The big meeting! Story under the cut.
Vermon was pouting in their den for a while after the encounter with the black dragon. Raider kept disagreeing with him about how the dragon looked. He was certain that was fear in their eyes, not malice. But his sister was there to rebut him every time he voiced his opinion. And his mom wasn't much help either. She preferred to stay out of it, as she wasn't there when it happened. So it was a he said, she said situation. His dad was there but claimed he hadn't seen the dragon. That by the time he found Vermon with his gaze, he was alone on the ground. Vermon knew his family is not taking him seriously. That they think this is one of his goofs or gags again. But he was serious. He knew what he saw. Thus his determination solidified. Over the next few days, whenever they went on hunting practise, or play fought or anything their dad did to prepare them for a hunter's life, he actually did. With focus. With purpose. Every bunny he snuck up on, he treated like it was that black dragon. His determination was constantly fuelled by the few traces they found afterwards of the black dragon. His family didn't complain either. The normally tiring focus-less behaviour of Vermon now changed for the better. What's there to complain about. But no matter how much he prepared, how well he hunted, how many times he ventured out alone to find the black dragon, his encounter with them did not go as he planned.
Namely because he didn't find them. They did.
Vermon was sneaking along the bushes next to the cliff they first met. He was cautious. It took him way too much time to get here without making any sound, he won't let this opportunity go. Well... calling this an opportunity was a bit of a tall tale. He was sneaking around with no reason or rhyme other than, they were here once, they might be here again. But no sign of any activity near. He almost gave up. He already passed the cliff and now was headed into the mouth of a tight valley. But then he stiffened as a voice rang out, seemingly coming from everywhere.
"Why do you keep on following me?"
He was startled out of the camouflage and was frantically looking around but couldn't find the source of the voice.
Quickcell's hearth was racing as well as he focused all his might on keeping his cloak perfect and his voice echoy. As long as the red one can't tell where the voice comes from, he should be fine - he thought. He made sure to be down wind, and chose the perfect hiding spot, one that allows for a quick escape. This dragon.. Vermon.. Has been casing the forest, especially the bunny burrows for days now. It, unfortunately, got on his nerve. So much so that his anger overpowered his fear.
"I asked why?!" - he shouted, trying to be intimidating.
Vermon gave up on the attempts to find the dragon and was just happy that it started to communicate. "Curiosity mostly." - he replied curtly. "I don't wanna hurt you!" - he added hastily, before they misunderstand his intentions.
" You don't wanna hurt me yet here you are hunting me." - came the snarky remark from all around.
"Ah, I wasn't.. I mean I kinda was, but you're so good at hiding, if I just run around wildly there's no chance of me seeing you! I just wanna be friends! You're new around here right? Where's your family? I'm sure they and my family could get along, there's enough food for us here! "
Quickcell was surprised about the rambling of this tiny red dragon. No sense of self preservation. None whatsoever. He just stood in the middle of the grass, talking to a rock, not even bothering to go invisible. He was already weirded out by the fact that his first response to hearing him speak was to come out of invisibility? Maddeningly stupid honestly.
"So... Can we be friends?" - came the enquiry from the now sitting(!) dragon. Absolutely no survival instincts, jesus!
"No."
"What? Why?"
"Why would I trust that your dad won't just come out of hiding and rip me apart as soon as I show myself?"
"Why would he do that?!" - Vermon was genuinely shocked, and his face showed it. Quickcell got the feeling that Vermon actually had never thought of this possibility existing.
"Then why would I trust that you won't attack me as soon as I come out?"
"Why the hell would _I_ do that?!" - another astonished expression. He could be read like a book. Quickcell realised this dragon might not mean any harm. But he could not live in that kind of fairy tale.
"Why wouldn't you do it?" - he fired back. - "I'm an easy target, I'm trespassing on your territory and I'm eating your food. You've got all the reasons, including no reason."
Quickcell's nagging feeling kept getting stronger the more he went on about the reasons. Because with each item on the list Vermon's face kept getting more and more baffled. If it was even possible for him to be more baffled than he already was.
"You really don't want to hurt me?" - this was Quickcell's last attempt at convincing himself that what he was doing was a bad idea.
"No? Again, why would I wanna do that? I'd gain nothing from it and I'd lose a possible friend!"
He couldn't last any longer. The past week of intense nervousness, his tiredness, and his longing for any sort of company and a tad bit of safety got to him. In face of this dragon whose survival abilities were non-existent, his will was no longer enough to keep him out of trouble. Against his better judgement, he dropped the cloak. His mind already felt a tiny wave of relief for not having to keep it active. He was still hidden by the rocks, but he poked his head out from behind them, and looked down towards Vermon. He kept as hidden as possible still, only poking his head out.
"Are you sure your family won't hurt me?" - he asked in a small voice.
Vermon was ecstatic. The voice finally came from one place only, and as he looked he saw the head of a young, black scaled dragon peering out from the rock above him. He stood immediately, tail whipping in excitement.
" Of course they won't! Hi! My name is Vermon! What's yours?"
"I know your name... My name is Quickcell" - he replied after a short pause.
"Quickcell! I'm so happy to finally see you! Aah my family will eat dirt knowing I was right! Come on! I'll introduce you to them!"
Quickcell was a bit confused about what he meant but he couldn't pay much attention to that as alarm bells rang in his head again.
" No! I won't see your family! They can't be trusted! "
Vermon looked a bit hurt, but easily got over the feeling.
" Alright. I know you're scared. How about we get to know each other first. Then you might believe me later." - he smiled.
"Okey." - came the answer.
"Come down here! Let me look at you! I have been trying to get a glimpse of you for weeks!"
Quickcell carefully started the descent towards the low point of the valley. Careful to not trip and careful to keep Vermon in his sight the whole time. His black hide still hid him in the shadows for the most part, so Vermon could only get a good look after he stepped into the light shining onto the grassy bit. As he closed the distance Quickcell also noticed the brilliant dark red of Vermon's scales. It was quite the spectacle. Not the best when hiding - he thought - but quite pretty.

Raider pounces into frame!
The third member of the troublesome trio, the playful Raider!
And with that a bit more of my story 😜:
First | Previous | Next
A loud bang rang out and echoed through the valley. Plasma shot, no doubt about it. And of course, that idiot Vermon is nowhere to be seen. This was trouble. Raider immediately jumped and flew to a nearby tree, trying to see if any wildlife would react to the shot. And she was right. Birds flew in a cluster not far from here, just below the cliff edge. She shouted down to her dad, pointing out the area. And as he flew, so did she. His dad’s crimson red scales glistened in the setting sun, while her red and yellow coat made her look like she was on fire. They hurried towards the destination.
Quickcell couldn’t believe it. He just got a bite to eat, he didn’t even finish half his tiny rabbit. And now there’s the dark red idiot that he saw in the skies earlier. He felt bad for calling them that even in his thoughts. But what else can he call them when they didn’t even go invisible or run after he shot them! But no, he’s now stuck in this weird stalemate where this red idiot is just standing there like it never saw another dragon before. He was racing against time. He saw the others, at least one adult. He couldn’t stay long. But if he turned and ran, who knows what the red idiot is going to do. So, he was stuck. His thoughts racing, trying to find a solution. His mother always said to be patient, and listen. Pay attention to every little flick of every blade of grass. And if you do, an opportunity will always present itself. And sure enough, he got what he wanted.
“Vermon!” – came the chirp of the other small dragon from the sky. The red idiot looked up, now is the time. Quickcell left his pray and ran as fast as he could. Running into the cover of the trees, turning and zigzagging for a bit while his cloak activated. And then, when he thought he confused them enough with his movements, his feet planted into the ground, he crouched down and committed to not move for a whole day if needed.
“What happened?” – he could still hear the muffled voices in the distance.
“I told you I saw the thing!” – came a chirp. But different than before. Must be the red idiot he concluded.
“You’re lucky it didn’t kill you! That.. Thing.. Was like the devil itself! It looked so menacing!” – said the yellowish little one.
“Menacing?” – asked the red idiot.. Vermon? Was that his name? – “I think he was just scared.” – he stared with absolute naiveté in his voice.
“Which way did it run? What did it look like?” – came the deep echo of a powerful voice. Damn it! The adult is here too! He stiffened his muscles even more, determined not to get noticed.
“He looked like us! But jet black. It was quite hard to make out his situate in the shadows.” – explained Vermon.
“Well, this explains why I smelled blood.” – chimed in the yellowy one between sniffs. – “But I can’t make out a further trail.”
He heard an agreeing gruff from the adult after this. Quickcell filled with pride. He was always a neat freak, even more so when it came to food. He’d pay attention to never get more blood on him than absolutely necessary.
“Was he the one who shot?” – questioned the adult.
“Yeah, he shot that tree that was next to my head”
“He shot at YOU?!” – the voice was calm until now...but not anymore. This was not a good sign.
“It’s alright dad, he didn’t mean to hit me. It was a warning shot. I wasn’t even paying attention when it happened. Couldn’t even have dodged.”
A long and heavy lecture followed this statement. From the groans or Vermon it seemed he’s heard this exact lecture quite often. It wasn’t anything like the lectures Quickcell received. Nothing about the importance of staying close to adults when out. Or the importance of hiding. Or even the need to always be camouflaged. It was all about paying attention to one thing and one thing only. And the importance to announce yourself when meeting others lest they get spooked. Idiotic BS as far as Quickcell was concerned.
But to his relief the voices started to sound from further and further away. He’s survived this encounter.

Quickcell is an oc of mine. He's a cross between a night fury and a shadow scale, a dragon from the game Day of Dragons. He looks Moore like a fury but has the abilities and lifestyle of a shadow scale. I started writing a story about him so I wanted to share that too:
Quickcell was not sure what to do with the scene in front of him. He’s been traveling long days with barely any food or water. Their den has been raided by others. He was told to run, find somewhere safe and wait them out. But no place has been good so far. Too little food all around. And he’s barely learned to fly, let alone hunt big game. So he had to rely on morsels to survive.
When his stomach churned again, he decided to fly low to look for some food while still continuing his journey. He had to make quite a lot of pit stops to rest so knowing the surroundings wouldn’t be a bad idea anyway. His concentration already started to slip from keeping himself invisible, and he’s been taught well by his parents never to fly while visible. Too much risk.
He’s heard a sound, other dragons, and he’s seen them too! They were flying in circles just a bit ahead of him so he nosedived into the treeline. That’s something he’s learned to do quite well. After landing he looked up to assess the danger, and he couldn’t believe his own eyes! These dragons were like him. Shadow Furies! Though their hide took a different hue. But for them to be flying around like that, they must be mad! He counted 2 little ones and one big one. Seemed they were playing in the sky, though what the game was, he didn’t know.
Or he just didn’t have the brainpower to pay attention to that. He was an anxious mess, expecting these foolish dragons to be taken any second now. But that never happened. He waited in one spot for an hour. His mind was tired, the shadow cloak, the heightened senses he kept to look out for any danger that could get him, all of it was just too tiring. The family finally disappeared into the treelines being done with playing around for now. He still could not fathom how stupid and lucky these guys were. He waited half an hour more just to be safe, then finally took his first step. He was searching, but not for food. He was looking for shelter, a place hidden enough to sit down a bit, let his mind rest for a second. He did find one, a bit of a nook under a cliff edge nearby. He finally laid down, and before he even knew it, he fell asleep, unable to resist the tiredness.
He jolted from his slumber, hitting his head on the rocks above him. He grumbled with no sound. Then he remembered where he was and immediately jolted upright activating his camouflage. He looked around for half an hour again, just paying attention to the sounds of the forest. Each one had a different sound. If you learn how it sounds like, you can figure out what’s not normal very quickly, thus avoiding danger quicker.
Finally, his hunger could not be ignored anymore. He needed food, and he needed it fast. Smelling around revealed some bunnies were living in the forest, so he set out on the scent trail, moving even slower than he usually does on hunts. No matter the hunger, he must keep his patience.
Next part!
