Quiltmaking is painting with fabric.
Check out this beautiful painting I saw in a gallery the other day. I love the amazing use of color in the fall foliage, and the way it frames the solitary deer standing next to the little path.

Oops, did I say painting? I meant quilt.

The quilt is by fiber artist Nancy Hershberger (@hershberger.nancy on insta).

Colette Keith
From her home on the cliffs of Puget Sound in Tulalip, Colette Keith spends her workday as a teacher and administrator at a local college. She is a quiltmaker, but you’d never know because there are no quilts in her home — she’s given them all away as is the custom in her Native American Lakota culture.

The Quiltmakers Gift
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Does anyone remember the quiltmakers gift? It was always my favorite story growing up. It tells such a beautiful tale of goodness generosity and redemption. Not only does the story occasionally move me to tears, but the illustrations are the most beautiful I've ever seen. They inspired me to paint how I do. If you have never read this book, you really should.

spent a while recently browsing historic gees bend quilts....I've looked at them before and I'm still blown away by the artistry in the form. I love how within that artistic community, asymmetry, skew, and playfulness with colour and design are such important elements, handled masterfully. SO different from the quilting tradition I come from!
