the cult deliberately stands for conservatism and right-winged older people that refuse to believe that their town is leaning radically and changing and their views don't matter anymore so they kill the youth. especially with casey where they describe him as a menace and give examples of anarchy as "bad behavior" and murdering innocent teenagers as "good behavior" for the sake of a god that doesn't exist

secondly. I think the black goat isn't real. the night before mae wanders into the woods and takes everyone with her and ends up killing the cult in the mines she had that huge talk with gregg. yknow the one. where we learn about what happened in highschool and college and how mae has basically been disassociaging for years seeing everything as "shapes" and how the video game characters lost meaning at one point and just became shapes. I think the leader of the cult knew mae personally and Knew this and abused her disassociation to try to get her to join the cult and believe in a being that isn't real just so they can have an inside view on liberal behavior with the youth they can't connect with

the cult leader is that lady mae met in the underground subway thing that said she knew things about her grandpa. miss rosa. this is probably very wrong but you don't see her underground And aunt mall cop seems like she's going to ask where someone is but chokes on it. she had to have known rosa if granddad was her dad/father in law. makes sense

mae can't leave home because of her disassociation but she refuses to believe it and it's never stated. that's also why she automatically assumes thsres a ghost following them and not her mental health issues and still thinks theres a ghost even in the living room with everyone else/germ where she tries to talk to them about what's going on. deep inside her she knows what's wrong from her dreams she just doesn't want to say it because that means confronting her trauma

gregg and angus have a lot of relationship problems that need to be worked through :( especially on angus' end. there was a part where he completely shut down and got into that fight with gregg and it never got resolved because he just tried apologizing to mae thinking it'd get better but the tension was still there. I see it in him. he needs therapy

beas dad is part of the cult it makes sense

the musicians in Mae's dreams are part of the cult and her being eaten by metal sculptures of animals could symbolize the people in the cult that would eventually try to take Mae's life
