That one's talking about Sullivan from Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-kun!

As you can tell from the AITA, the story follows fourteen year old Iruma Suzuki, after his shitty parents sell him to a demon, only for said demon to become his grandpa. Now he's going to demon school and making friends <3 It's a comedy series first and foremost, but it's got a lotof heart to it, and a lot of adorable moments.

The series has both an anime and a manga. The manga doesn't have an official english version though, so read it on mangadex

Pros of the Anime (3 seasons):

great voice acting, both sub and dub

great music

added musical numbers? (good for the idol arcs, at least)

Cons of the Anime

rather stiff animation

the battler party arc in the first season drags for SO LONG good lord

Pros of the Manga (300+ chapters)

the art gets absolutely GORGEOUS as the series goes on

extremely great expression work, great use of textures, great character design

runs longer than the anime (duh)

rough translations until Misfit Scans take over

early art is a lil meh (but still cute!)

If you read the manga on mangadex, do use Misfit Scans' translations whenever possible. They redid the first volume and take over at chapter 44, so translations from chapter 7 to 43 can get.. rough. Wicked House is not good.

Anyway, yeah! Mairuma is a super great comfort series for me. Plot kicks in later, but it's mainly about Iruma growing as a person. I'd imagine he resonates a lot with neglected or absued people - the fantasy of this poor kid getting whisked away into a new life and family that loves him. Iruma starts out as meek, as a total pushover, to his own detriment. And "Iruma can't say no to anything" is constant weakness of his, but his kindness is also his strength - his willingness to help others is what shakes the individualist society of the netherworld at its core.

The series also places a lot of focus on greed as a positive thing, which is fantastic! Iruma is confronted with his own desires, time and time again. What does he want? How will he take it? Demons are selfish creatures, and he's one of them now! So, be a demon! Fight for your desires!

It's just great okay.

We also have a canonically NB catperson (thank you Opera), the most poly subtext I've ever damn well seen in a work ever (thank you love trio), canonically lesbian pop idols (gyari my beloved).

Main downside of the cast is there is ONE obligatory pervert character but a) never actually succeeds in putting fanservice offscreen b) much less grating presence than M*neta c) at least has SOME character stuff going on outside that. My favorite arc w him has him competing with a girl to see who's the most elegant beast tamer and it's played entirely straight.

otherwise. super cute series. traumatized kid finally gets to go out of survival mode. a lot of things abt iruma as a character are shaped by that trauma and it SHOWS and the harvest festival arc in particular is my favorite because he's forced to grapple with his lasting fear of abandonment and all that good stuff, BUT HIS FRIENDS ALWAYS COME THRUUU!!! THEY'LL STICK BY HIM FOREVER!!!

I've been sitting on this ever since the chapters came out but Kiriwo vs Iruma and Azz was actually a really good section? Both from a technical and a storytelling standpoint it was top notch and is an excellent case study of how far Osamu Nishi's writing has come

First off, its the first time both Iruma and Kiriwo are meeting face to face after the events of the Battler Party. And it only took 300-ish chapters. Of course its going to be impressive, but I kind of want to focus on what I really really love about these two chapters.

From a technical analysis, I absolutely adore the double page spread with Kiriwo breaking the panel to lean over and devour Iruma. Demons are the most powerful when they are their greediest and not even the foundations of the medium can stop Kiriwo. I also absolutely adore how the hand pointing into his mouth lands right over Iruma's terrified face, the outstretched hand as well boxing him in with no way to escape. It breaks the natural flow of reading manga, forcing readers eyes to jump from the first panel to the last immediately. Even the speech bubbles which also break the panels to bleed into the next are boxing Iruma in, leaving only Kiriwo as the only option. He's right. Right here. Into his mouth. That's the only direction the manga allows him to go. Not even Azz, who is logically right behind Iruma on the other side of the barrier, can't be seen. Its just them.

One thing that Mairuma likes to emphasizes is eyes. Nishi likes putting in a lot of close ups of the face but eyes specifically is something she puts a lot of focus on. Of course, eyes are the only reliable way to tell if someone has returned to origins but eyes also change according to wicked phase. They are the windows to the soul, and whenever a hype moment occurs, the eyes are almost always a focal point to enhance the action.

The latter half of 303 really ramps this imagery up as eyes become one of the main focus points of the sequence. Iruma's watery eyes when he asks if its really Kiriwo, the concealment and subsequent focus on Baal's eyes as he looms over Princes Shura revealing his motives (also Shura covering her face up till Baal "saves" her is an interesting symbolic choice i might write about), the ever present return to origin markings on Kiriwo's eyes after declaring his intentions, and that final page is all about eyes. My favourite is the hiding of Azz's eyes as he breaks the barrier only to reveal them as he boldly says he'll stay by Iruma's side, eyes finally coloured in when up till that point in the chapter it was left white.

Speaking of panels though, Kiriwo is allowed to break past the gutters and invade other panels. His single minded devotion to consuming Iruma allows him to bend the laws to manga and lean right over. So logically, the next page where Azz saves Iruma, Azz who is consumed by devotion and is perhaps even more enamored with Iruma would do the same, no?

Nope.

Despite everything, Azz is still trapped within the story and its confines. Not even his words break through the boundaries. The best he can do is close the gap between the gutters, squeezing the panels together as close as he can. He still lacks critical information and Kiriwo has and no matter how much he tires, without that he will always be a step behind his senior. Even all the power in the world will not change that Suzuki Iruma is a fragile, fragile human.

As if to rub salt into an already gaping wound, Kiriwo's speech bubble at the end of the chapter literally shuts down Iruma's protests. Kiriwo is in control of the situation and his words take over the page. He's also drawn to be taller than Azz who is canonically about 10-15 cm taller

Control seems to also be a big theme/determining factor for whose words are allowed to transcend the metaphysical boundaries boxing them in because who else would be the one to quite literally dominate the next climatic moment than the unpredictable agent of chaos, Clara herself? The ringtone from her call quite literally cuts both Iruma and Kiriwo's words in half, drowning them out in her silliness. I remember seeing that a lot of people were upset that Clara interrupted Kiriwo but I argue that Clara is the perfect person for this? Master of funtimes and such a wildcard that she managed to seduce Raim through pure innocence? You can not tell me that you didn't laugh at the stupid fonts that Misfit Scans used for Iruma's ringtone. (Thank you Flare, whoever you are. Because I laughed. So hard.)

Also KiriAzz's faces when they look at Iruma? Peak visual comedy

Clara calling is also just the breather that the story needed. Yes, she inadvertently protected Iruma's secret, but she also the most emotionally mature out of the Love Trio which I think so many people forget. Clara is super smart when it comes to her boys, she knows that off on their own, they're bound to get caught up in their own heads worrying and agonizing in silence. Clara knew to call her boys after the Devilculum because it would had undoubtedly been stressful mingling among the upper ranks. Of course she was lonely and wanted to know how her soulmates were doing but even if she knows it or not, she is their emotional center and grounds them when they drift too far into their own self flagellation. But more importantly, she grounds the story in its genre. Lets not forget, Mairuma is a comedy series. Devilculum Arc was quite uncharacteristically somber for the series which runs on comedy of errors and misunderstandings galore. Sure, the beginning of the Arc was kind of funny but once everyone stepped into the venue, comedy became secondary to the plot.

Would it have been interesting to see what would have happened if Clara didn't call? Of course, yeah. But I think thats better left explored in fanfiction. At the end of the day, they're the Love Trio, they are a tripartite. Do not separate. And even unknowingly, Clara's protecting Iruma in her own way. And because of that, she is given the power to take over the page, filling it with images of Magitools Batara and her own silly creations, flower shaped speech bubbles framing the members as they work towards their own ambitions. She is the one that reminds Iruma of his own goals, who reminds him that there are demons at home who are waiting for him, and who he too is waiting for.

On a more aesthetic note though, I do like how Iruma's necklace this arc mirror's Kiriwo's collar. Its a very nice parallel but also acts as a way for Iruma to be connected to the people he's attending Devilculum with. The frilled collar on Ameri's dress and the Amosdeus Clan's rose brooch that both Azz and Amu have on their suits.

Idk how to end this ngl but I am completely normal about ch 303+4 the writing and set up is so so so good. I remember Misfits being so mad that others were translating the human part and I agree. Its so vital for the Love Trio and their relationship that their secrets are theirs to tell and not anyone elses. And the way these dynamics are portrayed through diegetic story telling is just perfect, I will never get over how good the KiriIru double spread is. Like those two pages specifically is my Roman Empire. I think about those pages on a hourly basis. I love that spread so much but 90% of what makes it so great is the surrounding context and the proceeding events. One day Nishi will probably top this and make me slobber all over her artistic storytelling but for today, I will continue to be consumed with thoughts about these two chapters.

One last thing but the fact that Iruma's secret got cockblocked from being revealed twice because of a phone call is just hilarious. Once is good enough but Narnia prioritizing a work phone call over warning his brother about what he sees as a great evil? He's so silly actually.

A fellow enjoyer of mairuma who likes reading others headcanons/interpretations here! just thought I'd share my own headcanons

1.) I think the misfits lack parental validation from one or more parental figures so they seek that validation from someone else, like Kalego. He, as their homeroom teacher, knows full well what they're capable of and actively gives them harder challenges to further bring out their potential. So I think the misfits would seek near impossible tasks not just for the fun of it, but to receive validation from someone they look up to.

2.) I believe that Kalego shows his love in pride. And when I say love, I mean all love; familial, romantic, platonic, and the kind that you know is there but don't have a name for. I guess a good example would be Balam, his closest friend and well-respected researcher. Balam would have achieved great things in his field of research and Kalego would be very proud of him for it, though I doubt he would explicitly show it. The same would go for his students. A mix-match group of kids who have, more than once, taken the impossible and made it reality while proving him wrong every chance they get.

(also a small group of demon plus one human children have better cooperation skills than most adult demons. yes demons are self-centered but i do think its really funny.)

I have been fully focused into my classes and college recently since I’m in my third year (we’re so close to the finishing line yall) but YES I love this!! One, I appreciate you sending me this since I haven’t done a post for a while! I promise im still here and I’m keeping up with the recent chapters 🫡. But yeah, I just love Kalego as a character. Like, he really is my favorite because I love a rude and snide character who you can tell cares a lot. Even if he won’t tell you that.

Kalego cares deeply for his students. Like sure, they annoy him and are goofballs. But at the end of the day, he is also protective of them. He knows they can accomplish great things and that’s why he’s hard on them, it’s not due to a lack of love. His pride is his way of showing affection. He will do his damnest to make sure you succeed and through his little actions, the characters can tell that he’s proud of them too. It’s the little moments with Kalego that make them know he does deeply care for them.

And yes, I also have a head cannon that for many of the misfits, they are lacking in some sort of parental or familiar love. Obviously we can’t say this for certain for all the characters, but it just feels like that’s why, no matter how much they complain about him, he also means a lot to them too.

As for my other head cannons… One head cannon I have (with the little info we have so far) is that Elizabetta grew up similarly to that little girl from Ouran Host Club, ya know the sister of the black magic club president? That is to say, I think she’s loaded but was primarily raised by her maids who gave her a lot of the romance books to keep her entertained. I think her parents were never really around. Or if they were, they don’t have her a ton of attention. I guess this is more of a head cannon slash theory? But when we see the house visits, we don’t even see her parents. A lot of them you saw the parents, a back shot or their torso. Something. We even saw Kalego call some of the parents. But her parents just wasn’t in the frame and she just kept showing him the things in her room which gives me the feeling she had a lot of material goods they bought her, but maybe not their affection. We also don’t see any adult when we learn about her ambition. Which is why I think she’s so attached to love, she is reaching for a connection she may not feel she has with her parents. And maybe in a way, she’s wants to build a family that will actually appreciate her the way she wants. Which to me makes the relationship to the misfits even more special because she finally has the love and pride of her found family. Idk, just a silly head cannon I have based on current knowledge!

Mairuma 305...

Honestly, baby Kalego saved this chapter for me because I was expecting more (which has been happening more than I'd like in the final part of this arc)

You know the drill, spoilers if you haven't read it yet

So... finally. One of the most anticipated encounters since the beginning of this arc. It was really hyped....And it lasted for a chapter, he didn't give us any real answers, just more questions and the same trick was used again and it doesn't really make sense that it worked this time.

I really liked the flashback for obvious reasons but it also showed that Narnia is (was) actually a good brother. Kalego even described him as kind. I said before that I wouldn't be surprised if Narnia actually cared for Kalego or his family in general. I was not expecting he was liked by his brother especially after Kalego's strong resolution to put him down if he was responsible for what happened with Atori. But I like that, Kalego putting on a show because he is compromised with being a teacher; but he really admires his brother, trying to believe he didn't know what would happen. But reality hits hard and he's left conflicted.

It's a freaking tease, that's what it is. We had no confirmation or denial of his alliance with Baal. I guess either it's so obvious that they're working together or it's something completely different and unknown to us readers that hasn't been revealed yet. It fits that they are partners. I just hope we don't have to wait much longer for them to say it, it's gone on for too long.

Remember when I said that the same joke wouldn't be fun twice? Well It kind of was but for the memes. We weren't left on a cliffhanger when we found out it was going to be interrupted, but that doesn't make it any better.

I mean, you can make sense of Kirio not moving forward with the reveal after Clara's phone call. Iruma's words got to him and he wouldn't lose anything by not saying it. Narnia on the other hand was trying to convince Kalego to not get close to Iruma, bc he is human. He has to tell him; beside Kirio was running away, while Narnia was going to attend Henri's call, he could wait to say one simple word.

I don't know how important it is, plot wise or character wise, that Kalego is left in the dark. For now. Like I understand why Azz was, considering Iruma's feelings and their relationship. But Kalego doesn't need the big reveal from Iruma's part. I hope that since he was left with some kind of feeling, he realizes it soon.

That face is not one of confusion but terror and fear. In the Spanish dub, Narnia says "our most hated existence" like saying that (humans) are hated by the two of them or by the Naberius family in general (this one I think makes more sense and is more interesting). But then why does Kalego say "I don't understand, I don't know anything"?

Things will probably become clearer in the next chapters.

What's your opinion on the theory I've seen a ton that Azz's bloodline ability is for whatever reason going to be related to "transforming into a woman" or "swapping genders"?

In short I can't stand this theory either, every time I read it I roll my eyes.

I think this theory is closely tied to another one where they say Azz is female and this is going to be revealed later, both really bother me.

I feel like a certain part of the fandom really wants Azz to be a woman for reasons that sound slightly homophobic.... The amount of comments I saw saying things like "Azz should have been a woman" "If Azz was a girl she'd be part of Iruma's harem" "it would be better if Azz was a girl" etc.

Now does this theory have any basis? Let's see...

One of the reasons I see used in these theories is that Azz's name is Alice which is a feminine name, personally I didn't think much of it because I can see Amaryllis giving her child the name she likes regardless of the child's gender or that even in the Underworld they don't give much importance to whether it is a feminine or masculine name.

However, for many people this detail is important and I fully understand why.

Azz is the only male character to have a female name (or the only character to have a name that does not match their gender).

Now this is not really true because

Pamela is also a feminine name curiously his last name is Incu which sounds very similar to incubus so looking at Pame's personality (stereotypes sorry) and this it would not be crazy to assume that Pamela is an incubus.

But what if in Japanese his last name is totally different from incubus and this is just a coincidence?

Incubus in Japanese is インキュバス and Pamela's last name is インキュ so I don't think it's a coincidence.

I'm going to digress and talk a little bit about Pame, sorry!!!

I find it interesting how Pamela is the only one of the first year demons that Nishi-sensei didn't show us his bloodline magic but specialty magic.

Just like Azz and fire, entice is not Incu's bloodline magic it's a magic he's good at.

And in the episode before this one Nishi-sensei reminds us that they are not the same in this scene (using screenshots of the spanish version because it fits more to what I'm trying to say lol)

Funny how the two male characters who have female names are Azz, son of a succubus (would that make him an incubus?) and Pame who could also be an incubus and his magic specialty is entice.

(I once read a Japanese fan with the theory that maybe this was a sort of a succubus tradition something like "for good luck give your son a female name!" or maybe they just don't care about the gender of the names)

Anyway, this brings me to another of the arguments used by those who have the theory that Azz can swapping genders/become a woman.

So far all the Asmodeus family members we have seen are female except Azz and we have only seen succubus and no incubus (maybe incubus don't exist in Mairuma?).

Incubus exist in Mairuma because in the spin off there is a character who is one, although we can take it with a grain of salt because this spin off is canon but not written by Nishi-sensei.

But Nishi-sensei already confirmed that succubi are a race of demons in Mairuma and that incubus also exist.

Last of the reasons and my favorite although not many do not talk about it.

Asmodeus and Solomon changing places (legend in the Talmud).

If Azz's bloodline magic is inspired by this legend, it would make sense that he could shape-shift (or at least swapping genders).

I want to point out that it seems important to me that the manga tells us that magic like "entice, charm, aphrodisiac" is not a bloodline magic but a magic that basically everyone can learn it, some may have special talent for it like Pamela.

For example both Kerori and Azz (probably Ix as well) have charm among their special abilities on the sheet measuring skills in chapter 219.

"Special shows your special abilities".

So obviously the bloodline magic of the Asmodeus family is not going to be similar to a magic that in theory a lot of demons can use, if it is related to seduction it's going to be in an unconventional way, me thinks.

i read this panel as her thinking which side she's on, because she's like, dedicated? and did her best to be an actual teacher during the heartbreaker exam, giving iruma's team a second try before charging in again, i feel like she'll actually be a really good teacher. but she still had some sort of emotional(?) connection to the six fingers, we dont rlly know her past and her past with the group yet so her being hesitant and lying about atori is understandable. she's on the fence, i hope we get more content on shiida💛

In defense of Crocell Chima and similar characters

I don't know how to begin but I just have to say this. I come back from school and open mairuma, I see things very similar to what I experience at school. I hope that those in my age group (16) will understand. I do know that adults read mairuma differently. Same applies to us too. I (we) take things differently. I enjoy the situational comedy, beauty of art, relationships and several things about characters ofcourse.

Now, Chima is even younger. Haven't we all (most of us) imagined marrying or dating someone as daring and strong like Iruma or someone, an onii Chan or nee San who influence us so much? Like "daddy daddy I want to marry him!" I know that it sounds silly and even annoying to older people. I don't think like a ten year old anymore but I don't think like a 20 year old either so I can understand chima very well. She probably doesn't even know what kind of love she has towards him. Even I have gone through such a stage of undifferentiated feeling of love. When we're little, we're greedy to posses something we love. When it comes to a person we idealise, especially for little girls, they want to be the wife of someone who is successful, powerful, handsome, pride and joy of the society etc. Sometimes it's the result of how the girl was brought up, particularly in traditional families, that the little girl wants to be a perfect bride for her perfect man. Sounds disgusting? Well it's true and you can't tell a little girl "honey you sound disgusting". Instead, rethink. It's a postive desire for her age. She is inspired to work harder. Iruma is her inspiration to work hard. What's wrong with idolising someone brilliant and kind as Iruma? What's wrong with saying that Chima's strength grew so much all thanks to Iruma? I scored 55/60 for maths test. I was a complete failure in math and it's for my papa I studied. How I'm right now, I don't want to study at all. I compete for only one subject, that's English. I always get the top score though I'm not perfect. I study because I think that getting good Marks is important if I want to get into a good college and also because mom nags me always "I'll take away your phone, you can't attend parties" and dad says something emotional like "I'm here for you". How can I not study! 😶 most of the time I'm in my imaginary world. Again, I had (past tense) a best friend. I loved her very much as a friend. I was loyal to her. The fact that I'm the top scorer didn't make me somber. I always did things in her favour, even participated in quiz competitions because she said so and won a trophy. (But she used me later to her advantage to get a boy and our friendship ended). In conclusion, there's nothing wrong with evolving our character or skills around someone. It is hard to be our own person always. We need inspiration to work. Teachers tell us stories of great and successful people like Gandhi because they want us to idolise them. Instead of that, isn't getting inspired by a nice person next to us a great thing? There will come a time when we will be independent, when we think we should have an ambition for ourselves but it's too early to make such decisions or to even think about it. My older sister wanted to become a doctor but later she became a teacher. So it's too early to pass judgement on how young people live their daily lives.

After reading through Dungeon meshi and reading + watching content about Kui’s character design, I realized something (as I’m sure many other artists did):

My own character designs, while interesting enough, didn’t really properly reflect the character. And in my case, they didn’t really properly reflect animals I was basing them off of.

For body types, the only thing that separated my characters was height. Legs and arms stayed the same, stomach and cleavage were relatively flat. My style is mostly simple, but if I truly want to do the jellies justice and give them good gijinkas, I need to do more. (I could also work on my facial features, but I still haven’t grown out of the button nose yet. Haha. For the record, though, I do have somewhat varied eye shapes and styles thanks to Mairuma-kun. Yay!)

If you see me retroactively redesigning characters to reflect this… oops. I’m realizing it might’ve been a bit of a mistake for me to post about all my characters so early in development (especially when I had no Idea what I was doing), but I guess it’s not a bad thing to document the design process.
