Hi! I saw your post about your top ocean liners! If you're still answering questions, what do you know about the Adriatic? Feel free to include another ship as I'm trying to learn more about ocean liners!

So, the Adriatic occupies a strange position in the Ocean Liner community. If you were to ask someone which of the Olympic class was their favorite, you'd get various answers, including the Britannic. However, very few people would say they picked Britannic because "she's the best version of the Olympic class". Most people would discuss her building, or her World War 1 service. Meanwhile, most people who I have spoken to about the Big 4 prefer the Adriatic because "she's the best version of the big 4". And, I mean, they're right, but its strange. She's the largest, the fastest, and the most luxurious. She was the first ocean liner to feature a swimming pool and Turkish bath, and all of her accommodations were generally a significant upgrade from her predecessors. But it's strange to me how THAT is the reason everyone prefers her. I mean, it's why I prefer her. She's the ultimate ship of the Big 4. But like I said earlier, very few people who prefer Britannic over Olympic and Titanic hold that opinion because she was (planned to be) more luxurious.

Anyway, here are some cool facts for you.

1. The Big 4 was almost the Big 5.

After Titanic sank, White Star apparently put in an order with Harland and Wolff for "A new Adriatic class ship". This is VERY strange considering the Big 4 had since been superceded by the Olympic class. As far as I know, no company EVER ordered a new ship from a previous generation like this, other than this instance. The ship was to be named RMS Germanic, after the SS Germanic of 1874, from the Britannic class. She presumably would have followed and improved upon Adriatics design, just as the Adriatic improved on the design of her predecessors. RMS Germanic had her keel laid down right around when World War 1 started, but the war delayed her construction, and she was eventually canceled.

2. The name

Like the Germanic, The RMS Adriatic was named after another White Star ship, the SS Adriatic of 1871. The SS Adriatic was the 5th ship in the Oceanic class, White Star's first class of ships. Like the RMS Adriatic, the SS Adriatic was an enhanced version of her predecessors. However, the SS Adriatic was later improved upon by the SS Celtic. The RMS Celtic of the Big 4 was named after this ship.

3. The Specs

The third ship of the Big 4, the RMS Baltic (named after the SS Baltic from 1871, also from the Oceanic class) was significantly larger than the previous two ships. However, Harland and Wolff left her engines unmodified. This meant that she was slightly slower than her predecessors. The Adriatic was even larger than the Baltic, but Harland and Wolff made her engines significantly more powerful. This meant that the largest of the Big 4 was also the most powerful, and the fastest. Her fastest crossing time was 7 days and 6 minutes. Also, her top speed was around 17 knots.

4. Coal consumption.

The Lusitania and Mauretania were the fastest ships in the world. From 1907 to 1929, their speed was unrivaled. The Mauretania specifically held the record for 19 uninterrupted years, and even beat her own record once. This, however, came at a cost. The Lusitania and Mauretania consumed 1,000 tons of coal PER DAY. The Olympic, only a few knots slower, only consumed 650 tons per day, despite being nearly 10,000 GRT larger than both of them. I actually discussed this in more detail in a previous post. Anyway, the Adriatic, by comparison, only consumed 260 tons per day. Now, she was nearly 10 knots slower than the Mauretania, but you can see how much more economical it made her by comparison. Because this was before late stage capitalism, these savings were passed on to the consumers. Tickets for the Adriatic (and by extension, the rest of the Big 4) were SIGNIFICANTLY CHEAPER than other competing ships, even the Olympic, and the RMS Oceanic, the predecessor to the Big 4. Also, after the first World War, most Ocean Liners like Olympic and Mauretania were converted to burn Oil instead of coal. This had several advantages.

1) Oil made the refueling process several magnitudes easier and shorter.

2) Burning Oil instead of Coal made the ship marginally faster (the Olympic was 1/10th of a knot faster after the conversion).

3) Burning Oil made the ship produce much less smoke, increasing the air quality in EVERY PORT THESE SHIPS WENT TO.

4) Because fluid takes the shape of its container, you were able to store MUCH more of it, greatly extending the ships range.

However, an unintended consequence of this was the Stokers. Generally, a ship like the Olympic had 350 men stoking the boilers with coal. After being converted to Oil, this number dropped to 50 or 60. Also, because Coal and Oil boilers were so different, coal stokers would need to be completely reeducated to work on these new ships (contrary to popular belief, stokers were considered skilled labor at the time, and required very specific and specialized knowledge and training. It wasn't just a matter of finding a strong guy and handing him a shovel.) As a show of good faith to their employees, White Star didn't convert any of the ships of the Big 4 to burn oil, to help ensure that the coal stokers could maintain employment. This was especially appreciated once the Great Depression hit in 1929.

The RMS Adriatic was launched on the same day as Cunard's RMS Mauretania. Because of this, as well as the fact that the RMS Lusitania was launched earlier, the Adriatic was the only member of the Big 4 to not hold the title of "largest ship in the world".

The longest trip the RMS Adriatic did was her voyage to be scrapped in Osaka Japan.

Now that I've infodumped all over your dash, here's a disclaimer:

90% of this was from memory. I occasionally checked some sources for specific numbers like speed and coal consumption, but otherwise this was all stuff I just knew off hand. Before you use ANY of this information ANYWHERE, I'd reccomend fact checking it to make sure I didn't get anything wrong.

Some interesting facts about the most under-appreciated of the Big Four, RMS Cedric, because she was a great ship and I think she deserves some love.

Her name was actually pronounced "Seed-ric," not "Sed-ric."

When she entered service in 1903, she was the largest ship in the world at 21,073.49 GRT, taking the title from Celtic by 169.42 GRT. She'd later lose it to Baltic by 2,802.38 GRT.

She was known for being something of a klutz, being involved in several collisions over the course of her career, but thankfully none that ever managed to significantly damage her.

She was one of the first White Star ships to be fitted with the newer Wellin davits that would be later used on Olympic and Titanic. These davits were much more efficient than the bent-arm type used on the other three (it's unclear why they didn't use them on Baltic or Adriatic).

A third-class passenger once gave birth to a baby boy during a particularly rough crossing, and decided to name him Cedric after the ship.

While she was an extremely profitable ship, Cedric was the least popular of her sisters, carrying a total of 335,357 passengers over the course of her 28-year career - 663 less than carried by Adriatic.

She was in New York when Titanic sank - J. Bruce Ismay actually attempted to hold her so she could take him and the crew back to Britain. This was unsuccessful, and he later returned to Britain on Adriatic after American inquiry.

During WWI was used as an armed merchant cruiser, then as a troop transport. At one point, while she and Celtic were sailing in a convoy, she collided with Canadian Pacific's Montreal. Cedric was mostly unharmed, but Montreal was significantly damaged; attempts were made to tow her, but she ended up sinking.

With her passenger numbers falling and the arrival of the new Britannic and Georgic, she was pulled from service in 1931, and was scrapped at Inverkeithing in 1932.

So hopefully this is the last important thing that happened on September 20th that I will need to make a post about.

On September 20th, 1906, White Star Line's RMS Adriatic was launched at Harland and Wolff in Belfast, Ireland. The launch of the Adriatic took place on the exact same day as the launch of Cunard's Mauretania.

The Adriatic's maiden voyage took place on May 8th, 1907. She was the last ship built of White Star Line's Big Four, and she was the most luxurious and large out of the 4 liners. She had a long and successful career along with her sisters Celtic, Cedric, and Baltic. She was scrapped in 1935.

Fred Weasley x Reader

A/N - please be nice lmao this is my first time writing an imagine. This story is based on what I imagine my own boggart would be.

TW - self h*rm (scratching), depression and anxiety, mention of a su*cide attempt, and monophobia (i think that’s what it’s called; fear of abandonment)

Background info - in this scenario, Newt Scamander was born in 1978, the same year as you and the twins, and Lupin wasn’t fired in your 5th year.

In your sixth year, you take Defence Against the Dark Arts for a NEWT level with your friends George and Newt. There are Fewer students than in your OWL classes, so often times your classes are a mix of students from all four houses. 

Today in DADA Professor Lupin is reviewing Boggarts and has brought one from Snape’s potions stores for you and your classmates to practice on. The cabinet in the corner rattles and shakes while Professor Lupin talks about how he had to convince Professor Snape to let him take the boggart instead of just letting Snape deal with it. “remember class, if you happen to come across a Boggart outside of school, you should avoid dealing with it alone! Boggarts are best dealt with with other people.” Lupin reminds everyone of the counter curse Riddikulus and instructs everyone to think upon their happiest memory. Memories of the Christmas you spent with your boyfriend Fred and his family resurface in your mind and you smile. You can still smell the crackling fire and taste Mrs. Weasley’s hot chocolate.

You’re jolted back into the present by Lupin’s instructions “think of your greatest fear, and how to turn it into something Jovial!” Your face falls as your anxieties and fear surface from where you keep them buried. While you’re lost in thought Professor Lupin instructs everyone to form a line in front of the cabinet. You find yourself herded fourth in line, behind a gryffindor girl you don’t know, your house prefect Cedric Diggory, and George, with Newt behind you. You watch the gryffindor girl turn her boggart from a mummy into a pile of toilet paper, and the rest of the class laughs while you wrack your brain on how to turn your greatest fear into something laughable. Cedric approaches the boggart and it turns into a dark-haired ravenclaw girl crying and backing away from him. Before you can recognize this as fear of hurting those close to you, Cedrick has turned the boggart into his girlfriend laughing. George approaches the boggart next, and your anxiety heightens.

You’re wrenched from your thoughts as you watch George cast Riddikulus and the boggart shifts from his twin’s corpse into Fred energetically doing the chicken dance, and the whole class bursts out laughing. “I’ll be right back class!” Lupin says chuckling as he slips into the hallway to talk to Professor McGonagall. 

Your hands shake and you approach the boggart nervously. Fred stops doing the chicken dance and with a pop the boggart turns into your mother looking imperiously at you, her lips curling into a wicked smile. “you’ll never be good enough.” she says, her voice dripping with contempt. With another pop the boggart turns into your father, malice written all over his face. “why can’t you do anything right?” he chuckles, and again the boggart turns into someone else. Your older sister. Your mind goes numb, the counter-spell forgotten. You hear Draco Malfoy laugh as the boggart turns into Newt. “What’s wrong Y/L/N, cat got your tongue?” Draco and boggart Newt wear matching malicious smirks. The rest of class can only stand there, mesmerized.

You choke out a sob as the boggart turns into Fred. Fred, who was always so good at comforting you and making you laugh, was now towering over you, his face uncharacteristically dripping with contempt. You fell to your knees at his words, unable to move. “I never loved you Y/N. I’m leaving.” an evil smirk still painted across boggart Fred’s face. You tore your eyes away from what was now your worst nightmare unfolding before you. You were gone before you could hear Newt shout Riddikulus!, bumping into Professor Lupin in the hallway, tears streaming down your cheeks. You ignored Professor McGonagall and Professor Lupin’s shouts, running to your favorite hiding spot in the castle, where you knew you could be alone.

“Riddikulus!” Newt shouted, and the boggart now disguised as a writing desk quickly exploded. “Bloody Hell mate, d’you reckon you know where Y/N went?” George said, worry written across his face. “No, but i have a few ideas. I’m going to look for them, and if i can’t find them, i’ll meet you in the great hall.” Newt said, quickly becoming determined to find you before your thoughts could get the best of you. He shuddered, thinking of the night Professor Lupin carried you back to the hufflepuff common room, having found you unconscious at the top of astronomy tower, passed out before you could jump. Newt shook his head and cleared his thoughts, right now he just needed to focus on finding you. He nodded and waved to George as the two boys set off in different directions.

After searching the entire third and fourth floors, Newt trudged down to the great hall, exhausted, discouraged, and really worried. He glanced at the hufflepuff table, laden with food for lunch, then sat down at the gryffindor table, across from Fred and George. “any luck?” Newt asked, glancing at George and picking up a bowl of soup. Fred grimaced at your choice of soup and George shook his head solemnly. “what were you guys doing Georgie?” Fred looked to his twin, curious. Newt nearly choked on his soup. “You didn’t tell him what happened?!?” an oh shit look quickly spread across George’s face while Newt’s spelled shock. He quickly explained to Fred what had happened in Defence against the Dark Arts while George guiltily pushed his food around his plate. As Newt explained what had happened, Fred’s face changed from worry to anger. “Are you both daft?? Why in the bloody hell would you leave her alone?! You should’ve come and found me, I know where she’ll be!”

Fred jumped up out of his seat, shooting a pissed look at a confused Newt and George. He raced up the moving staircases, and climbed a winding staircase up to a tower overlooking the giant squid playing in the lake. Fred’s face softened with worry as he found you curled up there, dozed off, tears staining your red cheeks, your wrists an angry red from being scratched. He knelt in front of you and lifted your chin with his thumb and pointer finger, gently waking you. You look up, confused and dazed as he wipes away your tears. “it’s okay love, i’m here.” he whispers with a sad smile. Your eyes fall, unable to meet his gaze. “it was you. in Professor Lupin’s room. You said you never loved me, and that you were leaving.” Your whole body shakes as sobs wrack your body. “that wasn’t me darling, that was a boggart. I would never say those things.” Fred says softly, catching your hand before you can start scratching again, he gently traces circles on your palm, grounding you. The small tower room is silent for a moment as tears stream down your cheeks. Then you find yourself pushing Fred away, unable to stop your hands. “I don’t deserve this.” you whisper “you should be with someone who’s not... broken.” you choke on another sob.

Fred stands up and picks you up easily, then sits down and gently places you in his lap. His hands circle your waist, and you face him. “listen to me darling, I know you can’t believe me, but i love you with all of my heart. And to me you’re perfect, not broken in the slightest.” He lifts your head up again and forces you to look at him. “I want to be with you.” he whispers and kisses your forehead. You fall forward, burying yourself in his chest, and he rubs your back whispering sweet nothings.

When you’re finally up to it, Fred takes you by the hand and leads you back down to the great hall, where all your friends, George, Newt, Ginny, and Luna earnestly await your return. You eat a grilled cheese sandwich and smile while Newt cheers you up sending his niffler to steal Draco Malfoy’s expensive watch, the hufflepuff egged on by the twins. Fred’s thumb rubs circles on the back of your hand and he whispers “you’re good enough darling.” just for you to hear.

whats the most recent ocean liner fact u learned? (<- wants to hear u talk about ocean liners but doesnt know the first thing about them so cannot form a proper question)

I've been sitting on this ask for a long time. Mostly because I know so much that it's not often that I find something new that's actually... interesting? But I finally found something.

White Star Line's most successful class of ships was the Big 4. These were their flagships from 1901 to 1911 when they received the Olympic. They were the Celtic, Cedric, Baltic, and Adriatic. The Adriatic was the last one in 1907. Then, White Star's new "big ship" was the Olympic, which began the Olympic class. The Olympic, Titanic, and Brittanic.

APPARENTLY, after Titanic sank, White Star put in an order for another ship in the style of the Big 4. This is VERY strange. I've never seen a line order a ship of an older class that has since been superceded by a bigger/better class. At least when it comes to their flagships. So the Big 4 was nearly the Big 5. And that's just SO WEIRD to me because the Olympic was already in service by this point! It's so weird for them to have ordered another Big 4 class ship! Anyway, the ship would have been named the RMS Germanic, named after White Star's SS Germanic from 1874. Her keel was laid down in 1914 and construction began, but because World War 1 had just begun, not much progress was made, and what had been done was scrapped.

I dont know why people don't talk about this more! Lots of people love talking about White Star's canceled/unbuilt ships like the RMMV Oceanic, but no one ever brings up the RMS Germanic!

When the White Star liner RMS Celtic wrecked in 1928, the ship was evacuated, but the cat, Emily, refused to leave. She and her kittens stayed onboard for a few days, being fed on "fish, cream, and condensed milk" until they could be taken ashore. Emily's plight managed to make the New York Times.

essa não é uma pergunta fácil e eu sinto que não consegui fazer um ranking legal kkkkkkk tá em ordem, mas ao mesmo tempo a ordem dos fatores pode alterar o resultado sim q como tá grande, eu vou deixar em rm kkkk ces que lutem (e obrigada pela ask, nhaw). ask me my “top 5″ anything!

zane: todo mundo diz que é o melhor char que eu fiz e eu acredito q ele trouxe muitas discussões importantes para a dash, assim como teve um desenvolvimento muito interessante ao perceber a oportunidade que teria de mudar a história do seu povo a partir da consciência de como ele, por ser filho do herói, teve o privilégio que muitos não tiveram. também teve o crescimento pessoal de sair de alguém que parecia não se importar + temer os próprios sentimentos para alguém que os expressava sem problemas. obviamente, o teor cômico de zane é o ponto alto kkkkk eu amo como ele transitava entre humor e filosofias baratas sobre a vida com muita facilidade; como expressava que as concepções sobre os povos de seu reino (uma alusão às noções sobre os povos africanos) eram equivocadas e partia para a mudança nessa ideia nos demais; como ele, mesmo sabendo que incomodava as vezes, não temia utilizar sua voz... eu acho que foi o char em que eu não fiz tanta bosta no desenvolvimento??? e por isso ficou 10/10.

ever: a primeira coisa que eu queria trabalhar no ever era essa mudança de um jovem extremamente doce e otimista para alguém que iria perceber que há coisas maiores que não se pode lutar (e foi feita com o plot do obscurus). essa transição do ever seria muito boa, mas não consegui trabalhar bem (por isso meu segundo char). paralelamente, ele também trazia questões importantes como o apagamento da bissexualidade e representações sociais da comunidade lgbtqia+ (que no caso dele se manifestou em preconceitos e falar de algo que 1. ele não havia falado e 2. não era real já que ever nunca foi gay, mas bissexual). outra coisa legal dele era a interseccionalidade de raça + sexualidade. por fim, outro tópico que eu amei no ever foi o envolvimento com as artes, principalmente a dança; e o fato dele ter sido junto da meimei a pessoa que mais pegou gente no rp???????????? eu simplesmente amo esse dado kkkkkkkkkk ever tinha um total de 0 pinta de pegador e no final pegou praticamente o rp inteiro kkkkkkkkk ele é meu segundo porque eu acho que cometi alguns erros com ele, mas gosto ainda assim.

mathieu: é um personagem muito antigo que eu resgatei recentemente e o desenvolvimento dele é tão bom. o modo como ele cresceu ao longo dos anos, como ele aceitou que merece ser amado, como ele aceitou ser feliz e como ele evoluiu. mathieu sempre foi uma pessoa extremamente melancólica, mas tanto no desenvolvimento da dash quanto no desenvolvimento do 1x1, ele mostrou como ele encontrou essa felicidade, como foi atrás dela sabendo que a merecia, sabe? e eu amo como o mathieu é rancoroso kkkkkkk mas de uma forma justa. ele teve uma namorada que terminou com ele do nada, foi embora e daí voltou depois querendo voltar e ele “eu gosto de você, mas você simplesmente cagou pro nosso relacionamento sem se importar se estava me machucando. nao posso ficar com alguém assim”. 

cedric: a partir daqui, começamos pelos conceitos que deram errado kkkkkkk o ced era um excelente conceito. ele foi o melhor personagem que eu fiz naquele rp, mas não desenvolveu muito e desenvolvimento de dash é tudo pra mim. no entanto, eu gostava muito do modo como o ced não lutava para se adaptar à sociedade, mas ele procurava criar na sociedade a consciência de que precisavam de espaços acessíveis para ele. eu, como pcd, sei que o tempo todo a sociedade nos obriga a nos adaptar e não se torna acessível. então, fazer esse personagem foi basicamente tudo pra mim. choro que não consegui jogar muito kkkkkk

nikhil: o conceito dele era uma delícia. não joguei, porque não estava na vibe de chars mais sérios e políticos, mas ele era aquele char que realmente queria fazer alguma coisa boa para a cidade, sabe? não só ser o prefeito e ficar lá. eu queria muito ter desenvolvido a relação dele com a própria perda, de ter vivido um grande amor e não tê-lo mais, mas ainda assim continuar tranquilo com isso porque nem todo mundo tem essa oportunidade de amar e ser amado de volta, mas ele teve e o fez e ele fica extremamente contente com isso. choro porque nao consegui jogar muito kkkkk +1

obs: o dommie não entra nessa lista porque eu cometi muitos erros com ele, mas ele era um bom char no geral. vingativo, revolucionário, doce e ao mesmo tempo com muitas questões para resolver.... aff, queria não ter feito tanta bosta KKKKKKK

Free!- Just the main peeps; Makoto, Nagisa, Rei, Haru, Rin, and Souske. I haven’t watched any of it in a long time and I really don’t mind spoilers so anything goes.

Haikyuu!!- Everyone in Karasuno; everyone in Nekoma; Oikawa, Iwaizumi, Kyotani from Aoba johsai; Bokuto, Akaashi from Fukurodani; Ushijima, Tendo from Shiratorizawa. I have not seen season three and four so no spoilers please! 

Hetalia- I’m not super into this anime anymore, but I’ll still write for it. I’ll write for anyone and I’ve seen everything so anything goes.

K-Project/K- I’ll write for anyone. I’ve also seen the whole thing so anything goes.

Kuroko no Basket- I will only write for the generation of Miracles. I haven’t seen anything past season one, but I don’t mind spoilers so anything goes.
