1. New Mexico governor signs bill ending juvenile life sentences without parole

New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has signed a bill into law that prevents juvenile offenders from receiving life sentences without eligibility for parole. The bill, known as the No Life Sentences for Juveniles Act, allows offenders who committed crimes under the age of 18 and received life sentences to be eligible for parole hearings 15 to 25 years into their sentences.

This legislation also applies to juveniles found guilty of first-degree murder, even if they were tried as adults. The move puts New Mexico in a group of at least 24 other states and Washington, DC, that have enacted similar measures following a 2021 Supreme Court ruling.

2. Promising pill completely eliminates cancer in 18 leukaemia patients

An experimental pill called revumenib has shown promise in curing terminal leukemia patients who were not responding to treatment in a long-awaited clinical trial in the United States. The drug works by inhibiting a specific protein called menin, which is involved in the machinery that gets hijacked by leukemia cells and causes normal blood cells to turn into cancerous ones.

The pill targets the most common mutation in acute myeloid leukemia, a gene called NPM1, and a less common fusion called KMT2A. The US Food and Drug Administration granted revumenib "breakthrough therapy designation" to fast-track its development and regulatory review based on the promising results of the trial.

3. Spain passes law against domestic animal abuse

Spain has passed a new law on animal welfare, accompanied by a reform of the penal code that increases prison sentences for those mistreating animals. The law will make compulsory training for dog owners, and will prohibit them from leaving their dogs alone for more than 24 hours.

It also mandates the sterilisation of cats, with exceptions for farms, and increases the penalties for mistreatment of animals to up to two years in prison, or three years in the event of aggravating circumstances.

4. Bravery medals for women who raced into 'rough, crazy' surf to save drowning girls

Bella Broadley and Elyse Partridge saved two 11-year-old girls from drowning at Angels Beach near Ballina, an unpatrolled beach in Australia. The younger girls, Chloe and Violet, became trapped in a rip and overwhelmed by waves and the current. Bella and Elyse jumped into action, using an esky lid as a flotation device to help them swim to the girls. Elyse helped Chloe back to shore while Bella swam further out to help Violet.

Elyse and Bella were on Wednesday named on the Governor General's Australian Bravery Decorations Honours List, which recognised 66 Australians for acts of bravery.

These critically endangered tortoises are native to Madagascar and have seen their numbers decline due to over-collection for illegal sales on the black market. Captive breeding programs have helped produce new radiated tortoises, but the species still faces extinction in the wild.

That's why the arrival of these hatchlings, born to 90-year-old Mr. Pickles and his 53-year-old partner Mrs. Pickles, is such great news. Mr. Pickles is considered the most genetically valuable radiated tortoise in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' Species Survival Plan, and the births represent a significant contribution to the survival of the species.

7. EU strikes ‘ground-breaking’ deal to cut maritime emissions

The European Parliament and EU ministers have agreed on a new law to cut emissions in the maritime sector. The law aims to reduce ship emissions by 2% as of 2025 and 80% as of 2050, covering greenhouse gas, methane, and nitrous oxide emissions.

The European Commission will review the law in 2028 and will decide whether to place carbon-cutting requirements on smaller ships. The agreement will also require containerships and passenger ships docking at major EU ports to plug into the on-shore power supply as of 2030. Penalties collected from those that fail to meet the targets will be allocated to projects focused on decarbonising the maritime sector.

Nobody ever said turtles worked quickly.

Though it took him nearly a century, the 90-year-old radiated tortoise known as Mr. Pickles is finally a dad.

The Houston Zoo announced on Thursday that he and his partner, 53-year-old Mrs. Pickles, recently welcomed three tortoise hatchlings:

Dill, Gherkin and Jalapeño.

The births are a "big dill," says the zoo, because the radiated tortoise, native to Madagascar, is a critically endangered species whose numbers are in decline.

Radiated tortoises produce few offspring, according to zoo officials, and the species suffers from over-collection for illegal sales on the black market. Captive breeding programs have produced new radiated tortoises, but experts say the reptiles may go extinct in the wild.

I must need humans, too.

My tortoise died when my house burned down. At Crabman’s funeral, I explained how Crabman taught me that we don’t need to understand our Love, as long as a reciprocal benefit flourishes within the company. Every once in a while, not since the fire, I dream that I am looking into Crabman’s enclosure and realize there is more than one tortoise or reptile in there. I freak out because I don’t know how the tortoises interact, or if they are sick. I don’t think about how or why or who they are. I panic. I forget about Crabman until some break in my flustration, and I look for him, applying the same urgent emotions.

These dreams evolved from similar dreams, when I had bearded dragons. Male and female, pubescent bearded dragons shouldn’t be in the same tank until the females are strong and well developed, because they will be raped. That’s the lizard way. I chose to adopt bearded dragons into my care with my boyfriend at the time, after I had a panic attack in a shooting range when he was trying to prove to me that guns are cool. I have very mild and contained panic attacks, so I put down the gun, exited the range, climbed the stairs, briskly beelined out of the gun store and found myself in a pet store that occupied space in the same strip mall. He found me, peacefully meditating in front of the bearded dragon tank. We walked out of the store with one male and one female dragon.

Thereafter, we developed a humble menagerie of reptiles, including a frilled dragon, a red eared slider turtle, 13 pygmy chameleons, and of course, the famous Crabman, the Red Footed Tortoise. These were the first other beings in my charge and I loved that feeling. I enjoyed taking care of them. Feeding and watering them woke me up and kept me in a routine, which had a positive effect on my largely depressive state. During this time, I was diagnosed with PTSD, which I sought treatment for at the red flag of my professor of the Psychology of Gender. I read a lot of Audre Lorde and Adrienne Rich along side of my Cognitive Behavioral Therapy homework, so I spent a lot of time processing my simultaneous roles as a guardian of myself and as a lover. 

That is why those dreams developed. Confusion induced panic of my reptilian nature, which includes my nurturing tendencies, which are much more defined now.

Purity. Contentment. Discipline. Self-study. Dedication to God. Do not harm. Be honest. Do not steal. Respect the Throne of God in the Heart of everyone. Do not obsess with materials.  

The point of practicing yamas and niyamas is to create space to live an enlightened life. The yamas and niyamas are the roots of a spiritual tree that extends as high as the sky. We conduct ourselves properly to nourish that tree. I do not want to be concerned with gossip or extraneous troubles. I do not need to be emotionally responsible for anyone and I don’t need to go out of my way to help others when I can’t. I want to love and be loved and do good work and raise good kids and put my parents at ease. I am not perfect. I have taken quite a long time to bloom, but some people don’t make it this far. I said to a friend, I don’t usually believe in luck, but I am so lucky to have my family. I don’t know why I am so lucky. And she said, I am not. I choose to absorb the good stuff and be a bridge when people need help. I responded, I learned that from my family. I don’t know, nor do I care why or how, I just know the reciprocal benefit flourishes in their company.

I’m thinking a lot about how I want to relate to others; about my place in my brief unfolding of time. I am not thinking about how to conduct myself in order to get along seamlessly—we all know that will never ever happen. I am thinking about how I want to savor relationships and with whom, and how that will color the broader picture of my life.

My cat is curled on the rug of the Airbnb, and I feel grounded with him here. As I noted, I haven’t had those dreams since the fire. The habit of recording my dreams evades me, but they are reeling. What I mean to explore here is broader concepts of the yamas, or disciplines of relationship. They are more than basic rules of getting along.

“I define connection as the energy that exists between two people when they feel seen, heard and valued; when they can give and receive without judgement; when they derive sustenance and strength from relationship.”

Shall I list arguments why a human should need company? Not small talk company, but the ability to truly connect with others, the way Brené  Brown describes. No, all I know is that I am a better person when I have someone or something else to care about. When I say grounded, I mean my priorities are straight and my duties are clear. I behave accordingly without thinking about it. Without a creature to care for, I guess I’d take care of myself until I got bored and drunk. Think of all the wine money I’d have without having to buy all this cat food and litter and lasers.

So, I know I must need humans, too. My family and my friends are my great motivators. Without their criticisms or praises I have no moral stick, no gauge of how I am doing. Without them worrying about me I don’t know what to worry about.

This, to some extent. I am not an idiot. If I can camp for a month with a cat I can take care of myself. What I mean is, I think about their opinions when I make decisions because I trust them, admire and respect them. That is, to some extent. I stand behind my opinions, too.

The balancing act is the yamas. One can get by on a superficial basis by being kind, honest, not stealing, being respectful, and refraining from greed. More importantly, these things are imperative to navigating intimate relationships.

This is important to me these days because I don’t have a house—a physical structure to retreat to. I am reliant on others in a way I have never been before. I am obligated to my friends and family in awkward unforeseeable ways. I am a chemical, mixing and interacting with other chemicals. Each interaction creates a new hue. They want to help me, so it makes sense for me to be honest with how they can do that.

This puts the yama, non-greediness, in a new light. I like to think of it as refraining from obsession with materials. I could become obsessed with my poverty, as I have in the past. That’s not where it’s at. Obsession with possessions conditions the mind to believe it needs more than it does. If I am thinking about what I lack in comparison to whatever is around me, I will begin to feel desperate. After that, the mind devises plans to obtain objects of desire at whatever cost. All I have are the people I care for. I will not pay for objects of my desire with the connection of our relationship. Besides, connecting with them is the true measure of my worth. People who help do not need to feel pity as well. That changes their gift. All I need to do is spend the money wisely and pay it forward. When I am able to give back, I will be there for them and they know it.

Why did they help me? Because they want me around. That’s it. With all my wear and tear, my diminished brain cell count and quiet awkwardness.

They know it because I practice honesty, kindness, and respect. Those are the yamas of positive reinforcement. Non-stealing and non-greed are negative reinforcements. They are difficult to communicate properly without being honest, kind and respectful, although, by nature they radiate those qualities.  These three are the more difficult to practice, because it’s so easy to lie or be rude or disrespectful when we feel threatened ourselves. These difficulties play out in subtle, everyday situations and can easily be swept under the rug rather than dealt with.

In the past, in my reptile menagerie days, I was delivering pizza in the hood, full time hours that encompassed 11AM-3AM on the weekends, 5PM-2AM on the weekdays. I was earning my undergrad and drinking on my nights off. I smoked a gram or more of weed every day, on average. I was constantly worried for my life and worried about being respected, because disrespect could mean my life. I was jealous that my boyfriend loved his sales job and went to the bar every weekend. When he stopped going to the bar when I was at work, we’d isolate from the world, get fucked up and argue about nothing. My friends and family learned to not say things that might trigger me. When I noticed them tiptoeing around topics that were sensitive for me, I’d lash out and call them weak.

It’s been a long road since then. I graduated college, got my own place, started cleaning houses, started tutoring. My twenties felt like a constant rearranging of boundaries. I wanted to be safe and I wanted to get laid and I wanted to discuss, at length, in bars or in smoky living rooms why these two things seem at odds with each other. I did a lot of work at a puzzle that would never fit together, endeavoring to be comfortable with my place in the world. My greatest struggle was to make ends meet and maintain my house. My house collapsed like facades on a movie set to reveal my truest struggle. That is to maintain my home—my family is my home.

I isolated in my house and passively repaired relationships by refraining from freaking out at people. I learned patience with myself, I forgave myself for hurting myself. I sobered up considerably and went out of my way to make small talk with strangers. I practiced breathing techniques to deal with anxiety in public. I adopted rituals of moderation and wellness to keep positivity on the brain. I have done it long enough for the people who I hurt to notice that I am not so hurtful.

That means that I am earning trust enough for us to be vulnerable and connect more intimately. I can take a more active approach with those people because I can trust them to let me be me. Moving forward, evolving, advancing in any way is a process. For me, I sit with people, talking lightly about major things. We impress each other and we take those impressions to bed with us, mull things over and reflect. On another day, the reflection may show things previously unseen.
