Club Filmatics Organised Goa's First Intercollegiate Media Event "Filmbuster

On 28 February 2024, Club Filmatics of Don Bosco College Panjim, in association with the institute’s Department of Mass Communication organised Goa’s first intercollegiate event ‘Filmbuster’, curated towards media students. The theme for the event was ‘Roll into the Cineverse’. The event began with faculty incharge of Club Filmatics, Assistant professor Sonika Lotlikar, and Coordinator of the department of Mass Communication Department, Assistant professor Archie Fernandes escorting the Chief Guest, Rajendra Talak to the dais.The student council members including President,Devonna Gomes, Vice President , Joel Rodrigues and Media Coordinator, Mario Pimenta who were instrumental in organizing the event also joined them on stage.Assistant professor Archie Fernandes welcomed the gathering and appreciated the uniqueness and changes brought about by Club Filmatics. Chief guest Rajendra Talak, who is a national award-winning director in Konkani and Film Industry, appreciated assistant professor Sonika Lotlikar for her dedication towards the students and leadership that led to the curation of a very unique media event, which involved testing students’ creative skills. Talak spoke about the importance of learning and declared Filmbuster 2024 open.Renowned personalities from the film, entertainment, and media industry graced the event as judges along with faculty members for multidimensional competitions. These included Goan Actor, Salil Naik; Director, Dnyanesh Moghe; Associate Editor and Senior Journalist, Ramnath Pai Raikar; Dancer, Simran Haldankar; Photographer, Aliston Dias; Filmmaker, Prasad Naik; Model, Saisha Prabhu; Creative Director, Vijay Xavier; Footballer, Beckham Veron Xavier and Social Media Influencer, Flexcia D'Souza.The on-stage events, off-stage events and pre-events were called ‘The Showcase’, ‘Behind The Scenes’, and ‘Director's Cut’, respectively. The pre-events of ‘Director's Cut’ included ‘Parde Ke Piche Kya Hai’, ‘Loop Lapeta’ and ‘Ruk Ruk Ke’, which tested the contestants' digital content creation skills and talent. The participating teams introduced themselves through ‘Ensemble Assemble!’. Each team was given names based on popular directors such as Karan Johar, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Raj Kumar Hirani, etc. The mascots then interacted with the audience at the event ‘Pehchaan Kaun?’. Through the event ‘Definitely Maybe’ contestants explored different endings to popular films. Participants grooved to beats and showcased their dance moves during ‘Jhalak Dikla Ja’.Participants of the event styled, shuffled and sold iconic props at ‘Sell A Prop’. The fashion show ‘Walk of Fame’ revealed students’ style and teamwork. The most awaited event 'The Crown', saw participants exhibit their strengths and talent to win the coveted titles of Mr. And Ms. Filmbuster. The event concluded with a musical performance by DJ Doel.The participants' efforts and hard work came to fruition at the valedictory ceremony where they were awarded based on their performance. Overall winners’ trophy was won by Team Sanjay Leela Bhansali (St Xavier’s College, Mapusa). Runners-up were Team Karan Johar (SS Dempo College, Cujira).

The Bench comprising Hon’ble Mr. Justice Saumitra Dayal Singh J and Hon’ble Mr. Justice Rajendra Kumar IV J closed on 12.10.2023 the proceedings initiated by the Additional Principal Judge Family Court Aligarh-1, as the apology tendered by the contemnors were not found to be genuine and hearing them further would waste the time of the meaty litigants.

Facts giving rise to Contempt Petition

Allegation against the Litigant Subhash Kumar is that he misbehaved with the Additional Principal Judge Family Court on 09.05.2022 while hearing of another case was going on. As his case was not called off, he started shouting when he was asked to wait he continued misbehaving with the Court giving rise to Contempt proceedings.

Allegation against the Advocate son is that he continued unruly and loud behavior and threatened the court by seeking transfer of proceedings. On being required to act in a civilized manner, he refused to abide by the advice.

Shubham Kumar- Advocate shouted saying he is a practitioner of the Allahabad High Court and he knows how to deal with petty courts & threatened to lodge a complaint against the Presiding Officer.

During hearing of the contempt proceedings Allahabad High Court asked the contemnors Father & Son are they seeking forgiveness?

Both answered yes.

When asked for what?

They answered “humney jo kara nahi”

Litigant-father Subhash Kumar even denied the occurrence.

Subhash Kumar in the post lunch session filed an application on 09.05.2022 @3pm for hearing of his case & @ 3.30pm his advocate son filed another application for hearing of his case. This is mentioned on the order sheet of their case by the Additional Principal Judge.

Observation of the Court

Any grievance that any litigant or lawyer may have may be addressed in due course. Any order that may be passed by a court to which any lawyer or litigant may have a grievance may be addressed by filing appropriate application or appeal or by making appropriate mention at the appropriate time.

What is more disastrous is that a son (lawyer) appearing for his father (litigant) that too in a matrimonial case with his mother. It cannot be for Courts to advise lawyers to choose their clients. It has always been left to the wisdom of the learned members of the bar.

The basic learning that any member of the bar imbibes at the initial years of practice is to tell him to not appear for his blood relatives. However, this wisdom and nuance has not touched Subham Kumar by a mile. He not only took up the matter of his father but that too against his mother, by his act, he became a party to the dispute itself.

It indeed would be sad if statutory law were to provide for restrains on who’s brief to take and who’s not. Yet, the father - son duo before us would appear to take no less. Thats the tragic part of this case.

We find that the present case is not a case that the Court may have the luxury to deal with, in the present state of its overburdened board.

To voice our opinion differently, we may note that in a matter such as this where the lawyer and the litigant both claimed (though not convincingly), utmost regard for the Court but their behavior and conduct is found wholly unacceptable and objectionable, we say, enough time has been wasted over those who are already wasted.

We do not have time to take our gaze away from the cause of justice and to devote the same to punish the contemnors as per the rules of law.

Our time would be better utilized and is needed to address the cry for justice by genuine litigants. It does not merit to be wasted on the jesters and/or deviant lawyer and litigant that these contemnors are. They are far too less deserving of that. Thus, such contemnors may sometimes waste Courts' time yet, they may be allowed to get away, in the interest of the other, genuine litigants and meaty matters.

We also make it clear that

We refused to exercise our jurisdiction and have not absolved either Subhash Kumar and Shubham Kumar of their conduct.

It is only on account of wastage of time that we seek to prevent, we choose not to give them any further audience. They are thoroughly undeserving of that. Thus consigned.

★ Pathaan and The  SUPERSTARS Of Indian Cinema!

Pathaan has smashed records at the box office and it should put into no doubt who are the superstars of INDIA are. The film confirms the box office clout of Shahrukh Khan which had not gone anywhere despite the last decade not being as kind as the decade before. There was a box office change towards the end of 2000-2010 decade where digital prints allowed far wider releases on day one and as this process got bigger and bigger it meant the genre which was the forte of Shahrukh Khan was never going to get record numbers. But through the 2010-2020 decade the numbers coming with films which were not action films were still huge.

Pathaan had a guest role for Salman Khan and the public response has to seen to be believed and this should be enough for the naysayers who have appreaed due to his last few films not doing as well as expected. Stardom does not dissapear with a few films failing at the box office, just like it does not come overnight and takes many films to establish.

The Hindi film industry is probably the most secular place there is in India but the fact that the biggest stars of India over the last two decades are Muslim has not sat well in some quarters of the country and the media over the last few years. In fact the third biggest also with Aamir Khan though this is arguable with Hrithik Roshan and Akshay Kumar in the fold as well. The cinema going audience does not care one bit about religion and within the industry nobody notices the religion baring when things get bought up from the outside. There are these non secular voices also within the industry but the way the industry has functioned for decades these people soon become outcasts and work will just dry up.

The last few years has seen this Pan India thing pop up so you have regional stars names being put up as the biggest superstars of the country laughable as it may seem. There are no doubt some great directors in the Southern industries so it is possible their films can do well in the Hindi belts but that hardly means the actors in these films become stars and superstardom is far away except for the regional one which they probably have already..

India has seen seven stars achieve megastardom and two of them are Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan. The others being Dilip Kumar, Rajendra Kumar, Dharmendra, Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan. There is not one name in sight from regional film industries and yet today you see names like Prabhas, Yash, Allu Arjun and others put up with there with two superstars who are not only the biggest superstars of the day but among the biggest ever.

This is not to say that someone from the regional industry cannot become a huge superstar tomorrow because if the public takes to you then anything can happen but to reach the level of above names will take some doing not only for the regional stars but even for Hindi filmstars.

The simple reason why the the big superstars have come from the Hindi film industry is because the language has a wider reach. If other languages had a reach as wide as Hindi then maybe it would be a different story. Yes movies can be dubbed but that is the film reaching out and not the actor.  

Basically the negativity towards the Hindi film industry has led to many claims as to which is the biggest film industry and who are the biggest stars and when the national media is like this you get the regional one badmouthing Hindi cinema as and pushing their own which is natural. But at the end of the day nothing much has changed despite the claims as the HINDI film industry easily remains the biggest film industry in India as content may go wrong but that does not change the reach.

 As for the stars, Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan remain the biggest stars in India and that does not look like changing for sometime yet even though the starpower may not be as big as it was other points in their careers
