Life suddenly looks very different...
A few months have passed since Nadine and Keegans divorce. She is now living in San Myshuno with the kids and Rakesh preparing for the baby and a future restaurant. The kids stay with their Dad every couple of days in Newcrest and then return to San Myshuno for school. Nadine wanted a fresh start so Keegan kept the house and she took the rental while they split the simoleons down the middle. Keegan is working on being amicable with Nadine for the kids since he blows a lid every time he sees her.

Quest For Glory III: Wages of War | Part 1
The Adventurer's Log
Release Date: 1992
We saved Spielburg and we saved Shapeir. Now it's time to move to a new place in a game that wasn't originally supposed to exist, but they weren't ready for what they wanted to do in IV yet, so here go: Quest for Glory III time. What fate will befall Cinder Win this time? It's VGA graphics and point and click interface time.
Once again, not a blind play as I've watched it played, but anything wizard-specific will be new to me and I don't remember how to do everything.
Starting up I imported my character and had the option to be a Paladin thanks to my actions in 2, or stay a Wizard. After dithering I decided to stay a pure Wizard; that just stays closer to what I envision for Cinder. He is a Wizard dammit. Sorry, Rakeesh.
So these were my stats from last game:

Look at this fancy character sheet.
And after spending my available 50 points:

It opened up in Aziza's chamber. She summoned me and Rakeesh to see her.

She rehashed the end of the last game.

Slightly incorrectly I might add. I did not bounce my spell off the wall. I just moved around to a good angle to knock the brazier over. And where's the statue, huh? Anyway I got to see Ad Avis fall again and this time he got the Graham falling scream from King's Quest V, so that was quite something.
When Ad Avis died his magic was unleashed which meant she and other magic users could feel it and know the moment of his death. However, I guess things can never be simple because no one could find his body, and if there's one thing to learn from various media it's that a missing body is never a good thing. Even she couldn't determine who or what removed his body with her spells. The unleashing of his power might have darker results.
In the meantime she received a message from Rakeesh's partner, the Sorceress Kreesha, in Tarna in...Fricana. We're going African theming this time. There was talk of war there and she believed only Rakeesh could bring peace now. She thinks there's more to this and that a Demon has broken into the land and does what any demon does, and seeks to destroy them all.
In three days there'll be a portal to take us there.

So, three days later it was time to gather in the Sultan's palace where he saw me, Rakeesh and Uhura who wants to go home too, off.

And he had a gift for me from Keapon Laffin! My gnome friend!
Then a hug which was sweet.

I'm a sap, I'm a sap.
Then we arrived in Tarna where we were met by Kreesha. Uhura headed out. So some introductory stuff and a warning:

Booo, when can I use magic safely in a town dammit.
I needed some time to explore and adjust to the new interface though it is very similar to King's Quest V and VI. And I had to check out Keapon's lovely wrapped gift!

Sure did explode in my face.

I was left with the wrapping paper... "The wrapping paper is all that remains of Keapon Laffin's gift. He certainly has a strange sense of humor." Maybe that'll have a use. Silly gnome.
As for the rest of my inventory: I had 200 dinars and some of my inventory carried over: the sapphire pin from the Katta, my pills, a waterskin, and my dagger. I had a note from Shema to deliver to Shallah. I had some Spim which is rations. I'm pretty sure the reward for saving the Emir was supposed to be 1000 dinars though. Hmph, where's the rest of my money? Actually I do wonder how long our hero got to stay in Shapeir between QFG 2 and 3.
I had to start doing all the looking around.

Then it was time to chat with Rakeesh and Kreesha (their names are anagrams of each other...). You can also do the talk icon on yourself to greet and tell about stuff. But talking pulls up a dialogue tree of options.

The city and land around it is called Tarna and ruled by the Liontaurs. Uhura and her baby boy, Simba, have returned to her home, the Simbani village and we'll be going there in a few days to learn more about the war between the Simbani and the Leopardmen. In two days Rakeesh wants me to come with him to the Council of Judgement to attempt speaking to them of peace.
Rakeesh and Kreesha are lifemates. Kreesha is the magic council member in the Council of Judgement. Rakeesh's brother Rajah, is the King of Tarna and he's pretty hot-headed.
I could ask her about magic too and she said could teach me a spell that would allow me to channel my energy...! But not yet.
In the meantime it was time to explore Tarna, and leave Rakeesh and Kreesha to have some alone time together. Kreesha also had a room reserved for me at the inn.

Here, there's the King's Chambers up the stairs and on this level, the Apothecary and the Inn.
I went to the Apothecary first...

His name is Salim. Before I talked to him I had to look around as always.

That was the main highlight.
I tried the use icon on him:

Then I talked to this groovy...guy...radical, maaan. Just trying to get his vibe across here. So, it is the Apothecary, but he calls it Salim's Holistic Health and Happiness Eclectic Energy Emporium. He carries crystals and promotes peace and pyramid power...
He can't sell healing pills right now though. He needs the feather of a honey bird which I have to get non-violently or it won't work. That's one quest to add to the to-do list I suppose.
I could also ask about potions and lo and behold what should come up but a Dispel Potion. He was, of course, missing some ingredients: water from the Pool of Peace, a gift from the Heart of the World, and the fruit of a venomous vine. I guess Dispel Potions are just a tradition and staple of the series but they're made differently everywhere. Regional recipes I guess.
I could ask him about each, and in regards to the fruit of the venomous vine, got the best thing he's said yet:

One of the conversation topics was plants which led him to talking about a dream he had of being in a desert place and he was dancing with this tree when it changed. Suddenly the tree was like a woman and beautiful and it was magical. That gave me the option tell him about Julanar and how I'd helped her regain some hope. He was thrilled; the girl of his dreams was real! He planned to leave for Shapeir on the next caravan.
I... can't say he'd be my first choice to send to her, but hopefully for her sake it somehow works out? Whether or not anything further comes of it, the continuity is nice at any rate.
I tried to make a purchase just to see my options, but I needed to change my money first.
I popped by the inn just to see it for now.

Welcome Inn...
There was a bulletin board that had The Laws of Tarna:
Thou shalt harm none Thou shalt not use magic upon the streets of Tarna (booo and it won't even let me try) Thou shalt not take that which is not thine Thou shalt behave with honor
I also found...

A silly clown!
I chatted with the welcome woman, whose name turned out to be Janna Jamil, and learned that before I came the rulers of Tarna had sent out a party of diplomats to the Leopardmen, but only one person returned, Kharib, and he's not well now.
Kreesha's paying for my room, but I have to pay for meals... once I have the right currency. For now it just got added to my room charge. Thanks Kreesha!
It was time to poke into the bazaar.

Good ol' traditional moose head.
We've got a honey seller.

I could also ask about the honey bird. The bird gets people to follow it to a hive and then waits for the person to take honey from it and leave some for the bird. Maybe if I bought honey I could just use that as a lure to get a feather? I needed the right money though. There was also a rumour that Leopardmen are killing the Simbani people.
There was an oil salesman selling virgin olive oil. There was a rumour that the king of Tarna wants them to go to war in order drive all the humans away from city forever. A lot of liontaurs still don't get on with humans, but I don't think that particular rumour is exactly true. Or at least if the war was to be against the leopardmen that wouldn't be against the humans here.
Carrying on to the Junk salesmen, who are straight up a reference to Sanford and Son, which is a sitcom I'm not really familiar with, but looking it up, yeah that's basically just them.

There was a very enthusiastic weapon seller who tried to advertise his wares when I got close without my even talking to him. I didn't need weapons right now though.
I headed into the next area and ran into an altercation.

I chased after him into the next screen where a guard caught him and took us both to the Hall of Judgement.
The Council determined the thief, Harami, broke the laws and showed himself without honor. He was just scornful and then named honorless and sent away.

I was thanked for aiding the guards and was sent with Rakeesh to see the king, Rajah Sah Tarna.

I cannot for the life me figure out what's going on withe liontaur lady on the right. You can see where the other has her leg bent but this one is like serpent liontaur. Very strange. Anyway.
Rajah was very prickly and unimpressed with me. "Kreesha is the magic user of this land. Do you think you can out-enchant her?" And he was not too happy with Rakeesh either.

Rakeesh's daughter, Reeshaka, had led the peace mission that only had one survivor, so she's presumed dead. Rakeesh pointed out they still don't know exactly what happened and doesn't want to start a war and take more lives over this. I had the opportunity to defend Rakeesh. Rajah continued to not be particularly impressed, and I was told to leave them to their discussions.
Reeshaka would be Rajah's niece so he certainly has the right to be angry. He was still being a dick though. And war mongering isn't gonna help things.
But, there was nothing more for me to do there, so it was back out to continue exploring the bazaar. So, while my day is dwindling away next time it's time to get money changed and if there's time go shopping. Otherwise, bed time then shopping. Shopping will happen.

The real reason we killed Rakeesh in Legion is that Velen didn't want to pay Kil'Jaeden 10k years worth of child support.

"Velen just feels bad about his son" You know a thought just accured to me. It's been some years since Rakeesh died, and it makes sense that during Battle for Azeroth and Shadowlands he tapped out. The thing everyone has to understand with grief is that it's not a five step program. It's a cycle. Something it goes quicker for some, for others it takes a long time. And even if it's been some years, sometimes you find yourself still in the grieving process especially if you have regrets.

“There are many souls in Argus. Lost. Find them, and return them to me so that they may finally rest.”
Combining an old concept sketch of an uncorrupted Rakeesh with the fun idea of returning to Argus in a possible future expansion (fingers crossed) got me thinking about the kind of quests that we may encounter.
After Rakeesh’s death maybe his soul has returned home, to Argus. And while his father, Velen, leads the draenei people, Rakeesh is trying to guide and rest the many wayward, troubled draenei souls left wandering in Argus.
You, the hero, would help Rakeesh find these souls. As you quested along the areas they may appear randomly and you have a narrow window of time to engage and defeat them, perhaps gathering in a crystal you carry that Rakeesh gave you at the start. The souls would be randomly created NPCs so that no character would run into the same NPC souls twice (or would be rare to). As you level the souls would “calm” and speak to you, perhaps telling you a bit about their lives in selected areas that trigger their flavor script. At level cap Rakeesh beckons you to return them to him, as they are ready to rest and be with the Light.
Fun to imagine!

Just when you think you can’t possibly have any more draenei/eredar feels, there are Velen’s wife and son--or their echoes, anyway. (It doesn’t say that’s who she is, but it’s pretty obvious from the context.)

I wonder what Rakeesh's name was before he got turned into a demon. I don't think Velen would have called him 'butcher'

Quest For Glory III: Wages of War | Part 6
The Adventurer's Log
I needed to find a way into the Lost City. While Manu has been very hesitant about this whole thing he still let things out. There was a secret door.

By 'eye' I assumed some kind of gem. Monkeys would get into the city all the time with the eye that glows.
It was time for some searching. And a lot of fumbling to figure out how to get down there.
Once I bumbled my way down, after accidentally trying to leave and getting attacked by one of the 'long armed men'--neanderthal looking guys--there was a statue of Anubis with a glowing eye.

As usual Fetch to the rescue and I got a fire opal. I used that on the door, opening a way inside.
To find a couple of big scary, very bored guards--Fric and Frak.

Nothing to fight. They couldn't keep beating up their prisoner--uh oh. Bored bored bored. His buddy was only silently nodding.
Not something I wanted to fight... I accidentally ended up fighting the chatty one but I lost, though it seemed doable if I'd had more MP--it was lower than I realized. Still not something I wanted to do.
Now was the time for magic. I cast Calm which made them sleepy (and even stupider) and Open on the door and was able to walk right on through.
Where I found Reeshaka! She did live.

The Demons were entering the world through a gate at the top of the tower, as Kreesha suspected. Destroying it would let them defeat the demons.
But then she got taken over by Fric (or same model?). All harm done to him would harm her and she was the daughter of his master's enemy, Rakeesh.
All bluster. I still had two dispel potions and threw one at her, causing him to disappear.
Then Kreesha's portal opened bringing allies! Uhura, Harami the thief, Yusufu, Johari and Rakeesh.
Rakeesh was able to heal Reeshaka. They came as soon as they could and as prophesied.

But Harami refused to fight and only came along to get away from Tarna so it wasn't looking good for the prophecy... until my dear Manu friend showed up. He is a courageous monkey in the end.

The door we needed was blocked off but Rakeesh cleared it. He and Uhura stayed behind to hold off the demons and we went through to find a room of mirrors.

Our mirror images for demonified and we had to fight.

Face-offs across the board. Kinda cool.
It turned into an actual fight I had to do, but attacking it was causing its health to seem to go up, so it wasn't looking good for our hero. After a short bit, Harami appeared and stabbed it. He decided to help after all.

He gave me some pills--I guess I could have been more free about using them, but I still didn't hoard as much as I tend to hoard items in games in my defence--and sent me on my way.
Where I was brought to the final showdown.

The Demon Wizard's army of Demons and Apemen were standing by ready to attack the warring Liontaurs, Simbani and Leopardmen. The deaths of so many would release enough magic to open the gate and allow his Lord to re-enter.
The orb was still weak though from the energy needed to posses the Leopardman chief before. In other words I had some time to act.
This wizard was the Demon Wizard Rakeesh fought before.

Well, time to avenge Rakeesh too.
That dual in the leopardmen village was basically training for this. Same deal.
When starting out I didn't know what to expect but threw up a reversal just because that seemed like a good immediate thing to do in a magic fight. I certainly needed it against Ad Avis and here too. He threw flame at me after.

I Calmed it.
He tried a gargoyle and I Triggered it to stop it. That Ad Avis fight was good practice too.
He stole my staff with Fetch!

But at last Kreesha's warning about Trigger with the magic staff bore fruit. I couldn't wreck things then but I sure could now.

Boom! His head launched... and landed at my feet. Ew.

Cinder kicked it into the pit.
That just left the orb. I tried fetching it. That failed. It came down to my good old trusty Flame Dart, though I wonder if Lightning Ball or Force Bolt would have worked too. I'm happy with Flame Dart though. It certainly got me through the rest of the game.
The gate closed and I rejoined my friends.

Everyone had congratulatory messages for me.

Johari and Yesufu are getting married... He said he wanted to. She accepted. Why not I guess! Gotta pair up someone! Bleh.
Everything was well.
Nothing more
Nothing bad happened.

Or not. Cinder started writhing in magic. Dark magic...

And that was it.

It's a cliffhanger. Is that Ad Advis?
It was nice and gave me final character sheet so I didn't have to do it myself before finishing the game. Here are my final stats.

The spells have to be looked at individually to see their skill level so I don't have those. Just Flame Dart maxed at 300 and I don't know if anything else is even over 100. I don't think so.

462/500 points.
And that's... it. I feel like I'm ending this as abruptly as the game but well, even knowing this was coming I'm still at a bit of a loss. So, I'm going to carry right onto my final thoughts and talk about that ending and everything else.
--
Final Thoughts
I want to preface this by saying I did enjoy myself overall. I want to make that clear because I'm going to be sounding more negative for a big chunk of this.
First, let's get that ending out of the way and really the whole final chunk of game. I'm no stranger to cliffhangers and I've certainly suffered more painful ones...by far. I have the fourth game waiting, so no big deal. However, that managed to feel anticlimactic at the same time. An anti-climactic cliffhanger is kind of a feat, I'll give it that. I'm not sure what would have improved it. Maybe more reactions from the others beyond Rakeesh's one liner there. Maybe if something was more off-kilter with the final fight to show some sign of wrongness, though I could understand wanting a more abrupt surprise. But it didn't really land for me. Heck, maybe if there'd been more from the villain? Like actually seeing him earlier? We knew there was demon activity and Rakeesh had spoken of his past with the demon wizard, but there was no interaction or sight of our villain until the very end. I've said I'd watched the game first, so I knew this was coming, but it didn't land when watching either.
Relatedly, the whole final stretch from the leopardmen village on felt hurried. You constantly get funneled along. Sure, you have some freedom after Tarna closes off, but short of grinding there's not really anything to do before finding Manu, and then it's right back to railroading you again.
Yeah, QFG II starts funneling you along too; I mean you literally get hypnotized, but there's more to do. You know, there are multiple bits to go through and solve in the cave. Then the rush in Raseir after is the tension of the spell being completed and you're coming off of having gotten to do stuff!
Here there's not much you do in the Lost City and a lot of it is basically cut-scene. Then end dual. Then done. Coming off QFG II in particular which I think I had a cool final stretch, this feels rushed. I do wonder if they had to cut some stuff due to time and budget. It feels like the Lost City should have had more to it because there's really not a lot and it feels like a wasted or lost opportunity. Such is the way of game dev if so, but always a shame.
As for the rest of the game: do you know how sometimes the middle entry in a trilogy can feel awkward? That's kinda how this felt. Apparently, this game wasn't part of the original plan either but in the change to VGA and point and click they weren't feeling ready yet for Shadows of Darkness. In fact the end of QFG II advertises III as Shadows of Darkness. Knowing that, this feeling makes sense. I wouldn't have necessarily guessed that was the case, but in knowing there's an "ahh" moment.
A few other points I was less than happy with:
Random encounters. I don't know what the alternative is or how to improve it, but they were driving me crazy off and on, especially in the last trip. At least make running away take less time.
Magic Users and Thieves feel shortchanged in this game. Though, for all my complaints about that final stretch at least I got to do more magic-y things finally. There just wasn't much at all before that. Even when I was doing the magic user quest--getting my magic staff--use one Fetch spell and that's it. Also some clarity on what the magic staff does would have been nice. I ended up looking it up: spells don't cost MP while it's summoned but they won't level up.
I don't expect deep characters in this series, but there were some I could still build some attachment or fondness for in the past games. There were fewer in this one. I like Rakeesh and Kreesha... Manu was cute enough. Johari might have worked out with more time, but her whole situation and marrying Yesufu after all in the end just gives me the ick. I just wasn't feeling much with anyone.
NO GNOMES! Yes, I am disappointed this game had no gnomes. Give me my ridiculous word playing goobers back.
Now that's a lot of grumbling up there, so onto some positive notes.
I think the transition to the point and click interface was a smooth one. I kind of wish the spells had visible labels as well with their icons, but that's not a big deal. Combat was still clunky but no worse than the previous games and maybe better in some ways.
I like the dialogue trees and having options both on the person you're speaking to and with yourself. It nicely covers "ask about" and "tell about".
There were some cool spots and moments! Like the giant tree! Very lovely. Monkey Village-pretty and cute. Some entertaining merchants. There were plenty of bits to enjoy.
And I did enjoy it overall with some frustrations. I know the negative section is far longer here but that's just because I had more to say there. It's just more of a mixed bag for me and feels like there was missed potential.
If I were to rank the games so far I'd have it at 2, 1, 3.
Feelings on the ending aside I am very curious to see what this will lead to in starting Quest for Glory IV and that's coming up next. See you there!

I really wanna conlang one of the WoW languages. I feel like the ones we have the most info/canon translations for are like Thalassian+Darnassian, Orcish, and Eredun
#im not counting common bc there really isnt any common translations besides the faction language filter#whereas we can see characters speaking orcish to the player#and lament of the highborne is entirely in thalassian even tho its like 3 phrases repeated#eredun pretty much only goes from draenei voice lines and place names having meanings told to the player#and the fact that rakeesh means butcher#idk it would be fun to flesh out one of those
