'Sab Kushal Mangal' review: Everything is not fine with this romantic comedy

Whether Sab Kushal Mangal is a mindless romantic comedy or a paean to forced marriages is a question that will plague you throughout the movie. Helmed by debutant director Karan Vishwanath Kashyap, the movie centres around a small-town political goon Baba Bhandari (played with absolute aplomb by Akshaye Khanna) who forcibly gets local boys married off to girls whose hapless families can't meet the dowry demands of the grooms' side. When a hotshot media personality (their words, not ours) Pappu Mishra (Priyaank Sharma) is kidnapped off the streets by Baba's henchmen to be married off to local girl Mandira Shukla (debutant Riva Kishen) confusion abounds. Without giving off too much plot points suffice to say the convoluted three-way love story that develops between the trio ensures the movie meanders through 2 and a half hours before coming to a final end. Padmini Kolhapuri's son Priyaank makes a decent enough debut though we have to admit his 'Pappu hairstyle' is a huge distraction throughout the movie. In fact, it is the roguish Baba who captures our hearts and drives the movie, rather than the fickle 'love at first sight' couple Pappu and Mandira. Udayprakash 'Pappu' Mishra, we are constantly told, is something of a celebrity in the small town of Karnalganj. He is described as a local hero who is a hit with the girls. While admittedly the charm doesn't translate well on the big screen, even the tepid romance that develops between him and an infatuated Manda, who initially shows great potential as a spunky girl, fails to excite us. Supriya Pathak and Satish Kaushik who play Pappu's parents and Rakesh Bedi who essays Manda's father, in fact, do more to keep us entertained. And of course, Khanna, who single-handedly needs to be credited for lifting this movie from a flaccid small-town romantic comedy into a watchable one. As a love-struck small town don who undergoes a 360-degree transformation into a coffee guzzling, jeans-clad 'metro' man, only to please a girl, he strikes all the right notes. Faced with the truth about Mandira's real love, at the end of the movie, when he asks, 'but why didn't you tell me earlier?', you tend to echo his sentiment. Sab Kushal Mangal is a film that's confused about its own intentions. Watch only if you are an Akshaye Khanna fan. And hopefully, the sequel (the message is loud and clear at the end of the movie) will be built around a more robust and feisty story between Baba and his 14-year-long romance with Nilu. A budding DJ Rakesh or as he likes to call himself, ‘Rock-esh’ (Sumeet Vyas), hailing from Delhi is promised a huge gig during the New Year in Goa. Penniless himself, he lands there in the hope that the deal will help him make enough money to bail out his father, who is being threatened by some loan sharks. In a drunken haze, he strikes a deal with a drug dealer to transport a new kind of drug from Goa to Delhi in exchange for four lakh rupees. But his bad luck follows him to the flight as well. Four disgruntled employees of the Udaan airlines, which is said to be reeling under the brink of bankruptcy, hijack the plane. The hijackers include the airline’s security head Vinit (Mantra Mugh) and three of its IT, HR and accounts personnel (Sarthak Kakar, Muzammil Qureshi and Sarang Sathaye). To relieve himself of the tension, he partakes some of the drug he finds in his hand luggage and later spikes water bottles with the stuff, distributing it to the every passengers, turning the hijacked flight into a rave party in the process…

Stoner movie is an established genre in Hollywood. Films like Pineapple Express (2008) or all those Harold And Kumar films have delight us with their silliness. In India, the only example one can think of is Go Goa Gone (2013), which also had zombie elements in it. So it’s nice to see someone attempting a genuine stoner comedy. The idea of turning a whole planeload of people into junkies mid air does lend itself to so many possibilities. The director, Akarsh Khurana should have stuck to that premise. Well, the mass usage of drugs comes quite late in the film. Till then, we have to deal with the antics of a rather lame set of kidnappers who don’t have the guts to kill a cockroach really. The other track involves the antics of much married Punjabi couple Kuku Taneja (Kumud Mishra) and Suman Taneja (Natasha Rastogi) who also accidentally get high along with Rakesh the first time. While the husband starts flirting with all the females, the wife develops hots for Rakesh. There is also a track involving a cricketer with a shady past and a commando type who is also a cross-dresser, leading to ladyboy jokes.

The film does has its moments, like when Rastogi starts singing bhajans over the plane’s intercom or when a woman with a crying child extracts money from the hijackers for moving as she paid extra for front seats. But the comedy is slapstick for the most part and doesn’t actually lend itself to stoner jokes. We would have loved to see the mayhem caused by the passengers getting high in the middle of a turbulence or the effect the drug has on other members as well.

All-in-all, High Jack remains a nice idea which isn’t properly executed. But it has opened a way for stoner films and let’s hope other filmmakers would take to the genre and delight us with their takes on it in days to come.

Youngsters Swaraj Barik and Bhumika Dash were awarded as Stars of Tomorrow for their movie ‘Tu Mo Love Story’. Suhani Mohanty from the movie was awarded Little Star of the Year. Renowned Odia cinematographer and director Raju Mishra was conferred Lifetime Award for his immense contribution to Odia film industry. Singers Rituraj Mohanty and Deeptirekha Padhi were awarded Musical Sensation Male and Female for ‘Ek Hasina Thi’ and ‘Tike Tike Achinha’ respectively. For the soundtrack of ‘Tu Mo Love Story,’ Premanand bagged the Melody Maker of the Year Award while Abhijeet Majumdar was presented with the Most Entertaining Music Director of the Year Award for ‘Sister Sridevi.’ Veteran actor Mihir Das and Smita Mohanty got the Best Supporting Role Awards. The audience at the award ceremony were enthralled by some stupendous acts and performances by Odia film stars. The ceremony started with a tribute to Bollywood queen Sridevi. Bollywood comedian VIP (Vijay Ishwarlal Pawar) made the audience laugh out loud while Odia actors Shakti Baral and Papu Pom Pom also left the audience in splits with their comical performances.
