Meanwhile, I've been using them for over 7 years (the entire time I've been writing fanfiction) because every writing course I've taken and several of my teachers in school have always emphasized that this is the correct way to format dialogue in any written work (books, stories, etc.): 😐😑😶

I genuinely don't understand why people accuse others of using AI, especially when they accuse me.

I've been writing fanfiction on Wattpad and AO3 for over seven years now.It seems odd to me, because if I were using AI, I wouldn't be uploading snippets (previews of upcoming plot points in my fics) on my various social media accounts (except Facebook and here).

What's more, before I even start writing a story, I create detailed outlines. This includes characters, locations, research for themes I'll address, the number of chapters the fic will have, and so on. This usually takes me a long time – I like to have everything planned out, even the ending! I generally never publish my fics until I have several chapters written in advance.

Seriously, I think these accusations of writers using AI for their fics are getting out of hand.

I know many might think I'm taking this too seriously, but the accusation really bothers me. People who follow me on my other social media platforms (TikTok, Wattpad, AO3, FanFiction.net) know how hard I've worked to improve my writing, striving for it to be perfect and enjoyable for both me and them. That's especially true for those who have read my fics from the beginning, when I sometimes missed certain spelling errors or when they helped me as beta readers.

Just in case you're wondering, when I plan one of my fics, I always do it in one of my notebooks first—those are the sketches. Then, if I'm happy with them, I transcribe them to Word, where they stay as drafts until I feel they're "perfect." Only then do I publish them.

While I was venting in this post, I realized the best thing I can do is block that person's account. This is already recurrent behavior; not only do they accuse me of writing with AI, but they also constantly comment on my fics, criticizing them and demanding they be written to their taste.

The skin of her back and shoulders is smooth and still like the surface of a hidden country pond at first light on a hot summer morning reflecting the calming white morning sky as she awaits my touch. I was at the launch of the ALCS report on author earnings in London last week and the average in 2022 is just GBP 7000.00 😱

Celeb authors represent 1% of writers and take 25% of publishing industry revenue.

On top of a gender pay gap of 41%

As Piers Torday says:

“I just feel like: ‘Oh, Jamie, why do you need to do it?’” said Torday. “You’re already a successful cook and you already do really great things, but we just don’t need a children’s book from you. I mean, I’m not about to inflict my cooking on anyone.”

I feel that the only way this will change is through consumer behaviour - if people stop buying celebs, publishers will take note. And you'll be giving other writers a chance.

AND if you've a reluctant reader, or a child who hasn't discovered books yet, they are unlikely to be set on fire by celebs who don't understand their reader or the mechanics of story in the same way professional children's writers do.

I'll never forget my eldest coming home when they were about 10 (and already addicted to books) to tell me that one of their classmates had discovered the joy of reading through the class book, Michael Morpurgo's The Butterfly Lion. It made such an impact it was as if she'd been hit by lightning.

George Ezra and my Dreams

 Whenever I’m anxious, I turn to George Ezra. Don’t ask me why, but regardless of the song he is singing, he calms me down. His music is most definitely beautiful, but that is not what soothes me. It’s his voice specifically. It is deep, and strong. But he doesn’t abuse that power. His voice reminds me of home. Not necessarily my physical home, but the home in my soul. And my thoughts. His voice fills my ears, and trails down to my heart. It’s an odd thing to say, but when I listen to him I see my dreams. Like somehow he holds them. I see myself traveling to Italy, eating gelato while looking out at the cool blue horizon. Biking down the cobblestone streets on a yellow bike. Going to the market to buy fresh produce on a hot summer day. Drinking espresso at the local cafe and gazing at the colorful villas. Strolling through vineyards at dawn and running through sunflowers at dusk. He is that reminder I believe everyone needs. To keep striving for your dreams and doing what you love. To work hard, but also to enjoy the ride. And he may not necessarily be your reminder, and that’s okay. But I am glad that he is mine. He gives me hope.

So, to my dear George: Thank you. Although you have no idea I exist, I know that you do. And I am sure as hell grateful for that.
