Denis Villeneuve's forthcoming Dune adaptation is shaping up to be pretty special. The first look image of Timothée Chamolet's Paul Atreides, released yesterday (top image), didn't reveal all that much. However, today's new images give us a much better taste of what to expect this December (assuming of course that the c-virus doesn't have other ideas).
There are a couple of things I'm a bit iffy on; the stillsuits look a bit too busy to me, but aesthetically they look kinda cool and Gurney Halleck - played by Josh Brolin - still doesn't look ugly enough, but that's a minor gripe, I still think he looks amazing and will bring an aggressive edge to the role that Patrick Stewart - as much as I loved him in the film - failed to bring.
There is much to savour here; Chamolet himself looks perfect as Paul and I'm looking forward immensely to seeing his performance. I rather like Zendaya as Chani and Oscar Isaac brings noble regalness to Duke Leto. I'm intrigued by Sharon Duncan-Brewster's casting of Liet Kynes; I don't know much about her, but I'm intrigued by what she'll bring to the character that was played so well by the late Max von Sydow in the 80s original.
So far, it's generally looking all good; I really hope a trailer isn't far behind...

Louis Tomlinson is a well-known name, be it from his time in the record-breaking band One Direction, his stint as a judge on X-Factor or from his chart-topping debut solo album Walls. As is photographer and director Charlie Lightening who is known for directing some of the most iconic music documentaries of modern times.
The pair crossed paths in 2019 when Louis attended a screening of As It Was, a documentary directed by Charlie about Liam Gallagher.
Louis has often said publicly how he’s a fan of Oasis, the band Liam was in was with his brother Noel and their music influenced him growing up. He even credited Noel as composer on his track Walls, as it sampled some Oasis tracks.
As It Was, was a hugely popular documentary that went on to win Best Non-Fiction Documentary at the National Film Awards.
Charlie is from Manchester so is very much a northern lad like Louis who grew up in Doncaster. He has a degree in Photo Media from Manchester Metropolitan University. In an interview with Clash Magzine from 2010, he told how he got his first big career break in 2002 when directed Ronnie Wood’s live DVD featuring Slash. He then went on in 2003 to shoot behind the scenes footage for Kylie Minogue and shot the commercial for her ‘Love Kylie’ Lingerie range, after a chance meeting with her stylist William Baker.
He then met Mike O’Keefe who at the time was head commissioner at BMG, which later became Sony Music, where he is now VP of the creative department. In his role as VP Mike has commissioned over 1000 videos to be created for various artists including working with Louis and his One Direction bandmates on some of their music videos.
Mike began to commission Charlie to work on numerous behind the scenes projects for the artists he worked with. He later began to direct the music videos for some of Sony’s biggest artists including The Script.
Between 2005 and 2010, Charlie would continue to cultivate relationships with artists he worked with and grow his company Lightening Productions working with the likes of Kasabian and Jamiroqui and Britain’s Got Talent Winner Paul Potts.
Meanwhile Louis Tomlinson‘s musical journey was just beginning. Louis auditioned for the popular reality singing contest, X Factor which was created by music exec and TV’s “Mr Nasty”, Simon Cowell. Having auditioned as solo artist, Louis was asked if he would like to be part of a band with four other contestants, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne and Zayn Malik. Having been in band at school, The Rogues, and willing to take the lifeline being offered to him Louis along with the other four lads said yes. One Direction was born. They would ultimately finish third in the show behind Rebecca Feguson and winner Matt Cardle, but go on to become one of the biggest bands the world has seen since The Beatles and The Spice Girls.
Interestingly during the Bootcamp stage of his X Factor audition when all contestants had to pick from a list of roughly 40 songs to sing. Self-proclaimed huge Oasis fan, Louis surprisingly chose not to sing one of the Oasis tracks on the list, he opted instead to sing Adele’s cover of the Bob Dylan track Make You Feel My Love.
While Louis was busy captivating the world as one fifth of the worlds biggest boyband, Charlie Lightening too was finding his own career was also going from strength to strength. He began working with one of Louis’s Oasis idols, Liam Gallagher. Directing video content for his band Beady Eye. He also worked with Paul McCartney on his world tour.
In 2015 One Direction an indefinite hiatus, in 2016 Louis began his career as a solo artist releasing a collaboration with Steve Aoki.
He also released a collaboration with Bebe Rexha, which saw his friends and younger sibling Lottie have cameos in the accompanying video which was shot in his beloved home town of Doncaster.
Known for rarely being able to bite his tongue, Louis took to Twitter 2019 to post some frank and exceedingly honest about how he saw his own career.
The post marked an exciting turning point in the acclaimed singer/songwriters career. Later that year he teamed up with Charlie Lightening for the first time, after Charlie had been approached by Sony Music asking if he would like to work with Louis. He agreed and so, Louis with Charlie’s help released in to the world his “statement of intent” and the first glimpse of the sound of his first album. Kill My Mind was the first of a trilogy of videos the duo would work on that would tell an intricate story spanning across three separate releases. It showed how both Charlie and Louis worked well, both seemingly on the same page creatively.
Subsequent releases in the trilogy, saw both Louis and Charlie reunite with Mike O’Keefe who commissioned We Made It and Don’t Let It Break Your Heart.
The entire series of videos captured Louis’s huge fanbase and they were delighted when both Charlie and Louis announced they would be releasing The Director’s Cut of the videos, which neatly threaded all the story together and featured unseen footage which further added to the compelling narrative being told within the videos.
The release of the short film saw both Charlie and Louis head to Youtube Spaces in February 2020 to host Q&A about the project. Both were extremely candid about working together with Charlie admitting “No disrespect but I wasn’t thinking about the fans, I was thinking about Louis and about what we could do together.” This showed the depth and respect the two have for each other and why creatively they bounce off each other so well.
During the Q&A Charlie discussed how the videos were shot individually and that seeing them released with reaction from Louis fanbase helped them shape the narrative as they moved forward to film the subsequent videos. Louis commented on how great his working relationship was with Charlie ” That’s what’s been good about mine and Charlie’s working relationship, I don’t have to spend ages saying this is what I want and this is how I want it to look. I think Charlie kind of understands who I am and who I wanna be, so it was a really collaborative process, which was really important to me.”
We also got to see an insight in to the banter the northern duo have with them being asked how Louis acting skills were. Charlie responded “Amazing”, with Louis calling him out “ Don’t bulls*** lad, don’t bulls***. Then conceeding he was “Aright”. Charlie explained that when people such as Louis grow up with cameras in their face they have a certain level of comfort in front of them and how they know what they can do and how it will translate on screen.
For Louis the video he is most proud of is Walls, which was of course directed by Charlie and saw them reunite with Mike O’Keefe who commissioned the pair to make a visually stunning video.
Louis described the video as being “important”, and “the scale and size of it, it being filmed in the desert. That one just really stands out.” Charlie also felt that “Walls was a real moment.”
The creative duo teamed up again in December 2020 to create a live stream show which became the best selling live stream by a male solo artist in 2020.
Charlie will be accompanying Louis on his highly anticipated world tour in 2022. Louis has also told fans he is working on a documentary to be released sometime in the future. Charlie has accompanied Louis to recent studio sessions as he works on his second album which he will release an independent artist in partnership with BMG.
In the three years Charlie and Louis have been working together, fans have seen Louis release content that reflects who is an artist and seeds for what is to come in the future. Charlie doesn’t appear to be fazed by the large and passionate fanbase with Louis has. He just wants to make content that both he and Louis enjoy and are proud of as if they like it and believe in the art they create together, it will translate to Louis fans loving it. Through working together it’s as if Charlie has opened a window in to Louis’s world and is allowing us to see the man behind the music.
Let us know at @TBHONEST_UK, if you are excited to see what Charlie and Louis work on together next!

“Life” (2017)
Sci-Fi/Thriller/Horror
Running Time: 103 minutes
Directed by: Daniel Espinosa
Featuring: Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson and Ryan Reynolds
Dominique: “Are you bringing the alien back to earth?”
Roy Adams: “No, we’re going to keep it up here where it’s safe.”
I don’t normally like reading or hearing other peoples reviews but somehow going into “Life” (2017) I had heard a few and was pretty discouraged by them, the theme that came through was that this was a cross between “Alien” (1979) and “Gravity (2013), but inferior to both – which is not only not true but fairly insulting for all three films to be reduced to a type but also insulting to the film-makers themselves. Its no surprise then that this isn’t the greatest film ever made, but as far as genre films go it is exceptionally watchable with some very original content – you just have to suspend your disbelief and it will all be ok.
“Life”, is set on as well as revolving around a crew aboard the International Space Station performs a successful capture of a space probe returning from Mars with a sample inside. The crew is tasked with studying the sample, which may be the first proof of extraterrestrial life. However, the study eventually backfires as the organism displays incredible strength and gains intelligence, becoming extremely hostile and killing them all one by one. Trapped aboard the ISS with the rapidly growing organism, the crew must find out how to kill it before it manages to escape and destroy Earth.
If you have seen any marketing for this film you will probably know it is about an aggressive alien that is hunting its prey on a space station, and yes on the surface this is similar to “Alien”, but the type of alien as well as the crew and the motivations for the crew are pretty different to the film “Alien” in almost every way. The similarities to “Gravity” are that it is set in space, on a space station orbiting the earth – a fairly pointless and obvious statement.
Daniel Espinosa, the director of “Life”, whose previous film, the extremely poorly received historic Russian serial killer film, “Child 44” (2015) was a bit of a bloated mess is clearly in his rear mirror as this film is a fast paced thriller, with time given over to most of the characters for moments that make you feel for them when they all face their respective fates. The director make effective use of the two shot to maximize the claustrophobic feeling within the space station as well as point of view shots as well, particularly through a tense and gruesome space walk scene. The exterior wide shots look amazing considering this is a low budgeted sci-fi film and has a lot to accomplish with its special effects.
The spcial effects are acceptable at this films budget, however there are some shaky scenes towards the end as well as some of the moving exterior shots. The alien, “Calvin”, in my opinion is very well designed, I am pretty sure it is original, as well as terrifying in most scenes “he” appears, although by the end of the film I was feeling sorry for it and was wondering why we all just couldn’t get along.
The film is cast extremely well with the characters of Miranda North (Rebecca Ferguson) and David Jordan (Jake Gyllenhaal) given the most to do, as well as having the most depth for them to play with. The cast is round out with Ryan Reynolds who doesn’t miss a beat with his personality and motor mouth – the one thing I did think was he was a bit of stunt casting to draw people into the cinema. I have to admit that I really enjoy seeing Reynolds given the chance just to do what he does best, look good and talk.
The best thing to do before going to this film is to avoid all spoilers, go in clean and be prepared to be shocked as well as seeing a lot of blood and horror. The alien looks excellent as well as gross – it is not a humanoid at all, this for me is a relief. I am pretty sick of creatures from another world taking humans over or assimilating them, I think this has been done to death and the very idea of a new creature being created is a great idea and one not done enough in cinema.
If you like a good Sci-Fi with scares, the idea of the world hanging in the balance and some good performances from some really great actors then this is the film for you. Just go in with no spoilers or expectations, and you will have a good time.

Review : Reminiscence (2021)
Tumblr media
I’ve never been the biggest Hugh Jackman guy, and I don’t really ever step into a “from the creators of” situation with much optimism when it’s television writers presenting a film project.  Apparently, however, when Westworld is the television property, I will shed all of that aside and make the time to check out the film, hence my exploration of Reminiscence, the neo-noir science-fiction brainchild of writer and director Lisa Joy.
youtube
Lisa Joy and company set up a very dense, thematically rich concept in the way that time is presented as a mechanism for escape and protection.  On a functional level, this is presented in the way that Miami has transitioned into a nocturnal town due to the dystopian combination of heat swells and extreme inland flooding, while the entire mechanism of investigating memories while selling people personal nostalgia on the side provides an emotional entry point for this theme.  With memory naturally being subjectively objective, it is interesting to see it presented as an analytical tool for uncovering mysteries, as if our record of experience is like a literal hard-drive that can be explored by those with the proper skill set.  This idea is really driven home by the way that false, fabricated or potentially incorrect accusations send those being examined into a sort of epileptic shock via an inability to recall non-existent data, or how a person can literally become corrupted like a file if singular memories are revisited and reexamined too deeply.
The only real knock against this film would be the way that it brings other films into mind, be it through homage, parallel thinking or sheer coincidence.  With memory and the investigative aspect being so prominent, this film is most likely to be held up in comparison to Inception, but the slippery slope of the dark investigative rabbit-hole seems to be a clear nod to the narrative power of Chinatown, which becomes an even more obvious comparison point once you take into account the way Mae inserts herself into the story only for it to ultimately lead us to the Sylvan family.  While the disappearing girl trope is not new at all, aspects of this disappearance bring Under the Silver Lake to mind for me (though this may be better attributed to how much I love that film).  Both the color-grading and the look of the world seem to read like a water-logged version of Minority Report.  What we really experience with Reminiscence is a film with strong ideas and occasional strong execution of said ideas, all within the framework of familiar constructs that do much of the work needed to sell those ideas.
The actual star of this film is the production design and visual effects, complete with a breathtaking opening sequence that illustrates the somewhat uniquely dystopian setting of Reminiscence as a world overrun by nature in the form of water.  The way that night and day are flipped creates a strange uncanny valley reality where traditional noir aspects of a criminal underworld, the dredges of society, drug addiction, corruption and violence are all played out in our daytime hours, while the run of the mill aspects of life take place at night.  Some of the fight choreography and gunplay leaves a bit to be desired, as most of it reads specifically staged for the cinematography rather than sculpted by stunt coordinators.  The technology for the memory investigations is visually intriguing in its variety, specifically when the machinery that Nick and Watts used is compared to that of the District Attorney’s office.  The hierarchy of the world is presented pitch perfectly, with the disparity between the haves and the have-nots literally separated by higher ground versus those literally and symbolically drowning.  The writing is impressively layered, with the mixture of the three main storylines all beautifully balanced and serving one another to great effect.
Hugh Jackman stepped up to the plate in order to embody the persona of a man obsessed, and did so with the necessary mixture of dignity, skewed righteous indignation and deep attachment to pull off a hardened man who is irreparably scarred for his moment of vulnerability.  Thandiwe Newton channels deeper into that hardened and haunted energy, bottle in tow, with a fierce dedication to Jackman’s Nick that causes trust issues grown out of an overprotective and slightly judgmental nature.  Rebecca Feguson steps gracefully into perhaps the most difficult role in the film, as she has to oscillate between shades of seductive, deceptive, drug addiction, threatening, threatened and heartbroken, sometimes at the drop of a hat and all within isolated sequences.  Cliff Curtis steps out of his usual suave roles to play the heavy to great effect, serving as one of the major examples of the corruption and exploitation that has taken over the world of Reminiscence.  Daniel Wu takes a marginal-sized supporting role and makes it shine with his bravado and cockiness, while key appearances by Marina de Tavira, Angela Sarafyan, Mojean Aria, Brett Cullen and a few others help fortify the emotional rich performances of the cast.
All in all, Reminiscence is what it is... not the best and not the worst.  It’s a bit on the long side, and though it may sound like derivative criticism, shaving 15 or 20 minutes of the repetitive portions of the film would give it a bit more snap and narrative thrust.  It’s also funny that the connection to Westworld is so prominent within the film, almost to a distracting level.  I think this stands as a stellar streaming release, but I feel like the film wouldn’t hit the same in a theatrical run outside of our currently pandemic-impacted world.

‘Life’ (2017)
This film is truly an intense experience. The film's plot is a story that we've seen in the past. A space fleet encounters an unknown alien life form that is on board their space station, as they try to figure out a bit more about it they soon realize it is hostile and deadly and they have to work together to find a way to protect earth from it at all costs. The film is very enjoyable and its one of those films that have you on the edge. It gets to you and due to those tense moments, you are able to experience what the characters are going through. The characters were a bit underdeveloped for my taste as well as having some cliche storylines. For example Rebecca Feguson's and Jake Gyllenhall's character relationship wasn't really that apparent and it wasnt built up on that much. The film wouldve benefited if they had taken a bit more time to develop and make us care more for this relationship. That would've made the overall film have that much more emotion. But for the most part the performances were good. Especially the ever great Jake Gyllenhaal. He always delivers such dedicated and great performances in every film he is in. The design for 'Calvin' was good. Personally, I would've chosen a different design but as the film progressed, the design made sense. The unknown life form (Calvin) was extremely brutal and unforgiving. The way it moved and interacted with the characters was what made the film extremely intense and so good. I definitely cringed a few times. The ending is one of those movie endings that leaves you in awe. I sort of saw it coming but to see it unfold still shocked me. It was delivered really well. 'Life' as mentioned before, is a similar story to past space movies, but its intense moments and 'Calvin' make it so enjoyable.
