Due to a series of unfortunate events (a cancellation of all direct flights for 2 days), im going to be spending between 90 minutes and three hours in IRELAND of all places. The REPUBLIC of Ireland. I was not expecting this on my american adventure.
I wont get to do any irish things but im flying both flights with Aer Lingus instead of British Airways.
Here is my review of Aer Lingus which is by extension my review of Ireland:
- Holy SHIT this airbus is half the size of the boeing i was going to take. I expected it to have insane turbulence like the KLM washing machines but honestly it's no different to the boeing
- it is nice to hear announcements made in a celtic language first again, even if it's Gaelic and not Cymraeg. I look forward to seeing the "Casnewydd/Newport" sign when i finally take the train home, it's the first symbol of being in Wales.
- We left early. EARLY. On one hand this is leagues above all my BA flights that have never left on time. On the other hand if it left just 60 seconds late, id have recieved a free change of transfer plane. Now i gotta hope we get there "early" enough for me to get through customs and find my next flight. Better prepare to run but theres not much i can do about this. I just hope British Airways dont force me to pay for a rebooked flight because they decided 60 minutes international transfer time was enough (hah!) and i dont have superhuman speed.
- Im sat by an emergency exit. This has funny side effects. I get sliiiightly more leg room, but also im sat by the exit and the door is way, way colder than any other wall in the plane. It's not bothersome but it's funny how i have a free Cooling Wall.
- Internet is about same price as BA and i can use discord (good) but i cant use youtube (very bad, you should probably only go for for the im service)
- The dinner was about the same quality as the British airways food, but they had TWO meat options instead of one. I took the Beef Stew. Very yummy. They had cheese and tomato on the side instead of the cursed tomato couscous yoghurt that looks like strawberry muesli which british airways keep serving (prison food). I also really liked the chocolate mousse, slightly easier to eat than the chocolate brownie i get with BA, but i find it weird aer lingus serve most of their drinks in tiny cartons. Why??? At least i get a tiny water bottle with BA, like a souvenir. Also theres a tinier bread roll and no cheese with it, but the cheese felt out of place anyway. Not as out of place as the tiny creamer pot i get on both airlines, with no coffee in sight. It's like a shot.
- you dont get any free alcohol on this flight, you have to pay for your 1 can can of lager. With a credit card. Mine was in the overhead locker. Thankfully a guy on my aisle was feeling generous and bought my can. Downgrade from BA including 2 alcoholic drinks in the flights
- instead of a nice pasty or bacon egg roll for breakfast they gave me a tiny carton of orange juice and a Nature Valley granola bar. Horrible
- the in flight entertainment is on a screen from 2009 instead of 1999. There is no funny controller that stops working randomly. It is a normal ass touch screen. Unfortunately i lost my provided earbuds at the start of the flight so i havent done anything with it
- no reclining chair on this airbus :( it's an overnight flight. My chair is missing an arm but i assume thats because it is by the emergency exit
- BA do this thing where they dim the lights and turn them back on an hour before arrival. Aer Lingus have decided to "dim" the lights by having these purple lights on, instead of turning them off.

In a shocking tale of corporate-enabled racism, three passengers are suing American Airlines after accusing employees from the company of removing EIGHT Black men from a flight due to a complaint about "body odor" from a white male flight attendant. Somehow, this led to every Black person on the flight being removed and kicked off the flight, despite the fact that none of them were traveling together and none of the actual passengers made any complaints. Demand the Transportation Department get to the bottom of this! To make matters worse, the men were pulled off the plane and then PUT BACK ON after they couldn't find a flight to rebook them on. "I knew that as soon as I got on that plane, a sea of White faces were going to be looking at me and blaming me for their late flight of an hour," said one of the men, Jean Joseph. The lawyer representing the three men, Sue Huhta, said that American Airlines declined to provide her clients any answers about the incident and said it seems "fairly apparent that race was part of this dynamic…It's almost inconceivable to come up with an explanation for that other than the color of their skin, particularly since they didn't know each other and weren't sitting near each other." There needs to be some SERIOUS consequences for this absurd incident. Tell Sec. Buttigieg to investigate American Airlines for kicking all the Black men off a flight!

6/16/2024 - Home sweet home! We made it! Whew! Our unplanned stay in London was a surprisingly nice experience. Our brief time at the airport hotel included an AMAZING chicken makhani curry with mango chutney, the chance to drink a couple of British ales whist watching a little futbol, and (after a long and interrupted “travel day” yesterday) a welcome 8-hours of solid sleep. Sumi seems to dig the traditional English Breakfast (complete with a crumpet!)…which is what she had this morning. :) We were rebooked on two American Airlines flights (London - Philly - Portland) that went off without a hitch. …upon our arrival back at the house we discovered an absolutely wonderful ‘welcome home’ gift my sister dropped off containing fresh flowers, South African wine(!), chocolate, coffee and other goodies to get us thru at least till Tuesday. Customer Journeys
In analyzing how customer journeys can impact the user experience, let's consider two customer experience processes with similar goals, and the effects each of these journeys have on the consumer. I'll draw from my personal experience over the last few months and place a particular emphasis on the following:
Actions: What is the customer doing at each stage? What actions are they taking to move themselves on to the next stage?
Motivations: Why is the customer motivated to keep going to the next stage? What emotions are they feeling? Why do they care?
Questions: What are the uncertainties, jargon, or other issues preventing the customer from moving to the next stage?
Long story short, I recently took an American Airlines flight for my recent trip to Colombia which I booked on my American Express card. My flight was delayed nine hours, cancelled, and rebooked for a day later. We were provided no information, no compensation or accommodation, and the company also lost our bags during this endeavor. I had a similar goal to achieve through both companies - AMEX and American Airlines, but my experience in working with the firms differed dramatically.
With American Airlines, it was unclear which medium I should use to seek help - I waited in line at the airport customer desk for several hours before being directed to call the support team on my phone. After a four hour wait on the phone and an absurdly long robot menu, my representative told me to file a report on the website, without providing any support on how to do so. Arriving at the website, I find a myriad of data (much of which is superfluous for the airline, who needs little more than my last name to track down my flight)

It's unclear at every stage which actions I should be taking to move forward, and it feels that every stage is designed to reduce my motivation to continue along the process to receive help. If anything, I am left with further questions at each stage of the process than beforehand.
Contrast this with American Express who has a very clear customer journey - call the number on your card (there's no email provided, and all resources ask you to call directly). Once you call you will be put in touch with a representative immediately that listens to your problem, and even if they can't help you, they will prescribe the specific next actions, and then immediately transfer you on the phone then and there to the relevant department (insurance in my case) and provide an account of your previous call to expedite the resolution process. The insurance agent even filled out the first few steps of the claim for me before sending my a form to complete myself.
Though the outcome was similar in both cases, filling out a complaint/claim form, one journey left me satisfied and vindicated, while the other radicalized me into a violent campaign to take down the organization. Simple changes in the customer process to clarify what actions are needed to move to the next stage, acknowledge the customers feelings at each stage, and preemptively answer questions or provide a forum to answer questions can have a compounding effect on the customer journey.

i LOVE european (and generally non-american) customer service so much because they haze you a little bit. make you feel ashamed to be a customer. like i was rebooked to a shitty seat on a KLM (dutch airline) flight and asked the customer service desk if there were any last minute upgrades, and the guy kinda tilted his head and was like "nope, fully booked. too bad, so sad for you, huh!" like...you're right king i deserve to be ashamed

April 1-2, 2023 Epilogue (or SJO-MIA-CLT-IAD)
We hope that in short order, we’ll look back fondly on our trip and not think about the agonizing journey home. It was a full - seriously long, FULL – two days of travel starting with a pleasant, early drive from Monteverde to San Jose, with Olgar, from our drive to Monteverde, and Juan Carlos. We even had a stop on the side of the road to observe a howler monkey family.
We checked-in for our American Airlines flight from San Jose to Charlotte, where we’d connect to DC. Only once checked-in, we learned that the flight was delayed. It wound up being the first of four delays on day 1 of our return. Because most people had connections they would miss, every passenger on the plane wound up clambering to be rescheduled, at first individually at various AA desks, then all together at a gate assigned to the task. We had our turn at the desk – were minutes from being rescheduled (!) on a different airline – only to have the AA attendants shut down the process and direct us all to reenter Costa Rica through immigration/customs, pick up our bags (note to selves — only duffels with wheels next time), get in line to rebook our connecting flights for day 2, retrieve hotel/food vouchers from AA, and proceed to the Crowne Plaza on shuttle busses for the night. Turns out the incoming flight was arriving the next day, so our flight was going to be delayed until the next day. Good Grief!! We divided and conquered – Sebbie collecting luggage and Jillebob heading up to the ticketing desk to get in line for re-booking. By the time she got to the front of the line, Seb joined her. We successfully (we thought successfully - more on that to come) re-booked the Charlotte-DC connections for our morning flight on day 2. We sprung for a taxi – finding what turned out to be a decent “official” driver in the sea of aggressive sheisters we’d been warned about. We got to the hotel before yet another line formed for check-in by everyone on the flight who took a shuttle. Dinner – a buffet – was marginal — a real let down after 2 ½ weeks of food that ranged from quite good to excellent. Sometime in the evening, Seb realized from an AA email that the attendant had only re-booked Jillebob’s connecting flight for day 2, even though he looked us in the eye and told us that we were rebooked together. Seb spent ages in the hotel in an online chat with AA customer support. The rep was courteous enough, but a response of “sorry for the inconvenience” is more than inadequate for having been lied to!!!! In the end, there was nothing the rep could do: all flights/all airlines from Charlotte to DC were reportedly full at that point. At least the hotel managed the large, last-minute influx of patrons well, even giving us a wake-up call (not requested). We were already up, and again took a taxi back to the airport to beat the masses from our flight and get our situation resolved before the agents were worn down by what promised to be a long morning of dealing with irate people.
Back at SJO on day 2, the first rep was super nice, checked us in and managed to get Seb on a United flight that got in later than Jill, but at least before the midnight arrival she was slated for. Oops, then when flight delays started again and it wasn’t clear she’d make the sweet booking she’d landed the day before, Jill had to rebook to a later Charlotte to DC flight. Then, several delays later, Seb had to re-book because she’d miss her re-booked United flight. United couldn’t do it, so another on-line chat with AA resulted in us being back on the same Charlotte to DC flight. In the end, we lost track of how many delays there were: an hour here, 90 minutes there…. Finally, the plane for the flight out of San Jose arrived, with added chaos of two AA 1248 flights: one on-time for April 2 and another one delayed from April 1, also leaving on April 2 — both listed on the departure board within minutes of each other. There’s humor in here somewhere. We lined up – again - and once on-board, doors closed, they announced that our destination was Miami. It almost felt like being kidnapped. It wasn’t clear whether the same plane would continue to Charlotte or whether we’d go through immigration/customs in Miami and have to figure out getting to Charlotte. On touchdown, one flight attendant welcomed us to Miami and wished us well for our connecting flights. SERIOUSLY!?!?!? Finally sorted by the airline, while we were still on the plane, we all put our bags back in the overhead bins; they brought on a fresh crew (we had to land in Miami because the last crew had reached the FAA’s flying duration limit); and shortly after, we took off again. All things considered, as grumpy as many of us were, we and our fellow passengers were pretty calm about the outrageous situation. Well, all but the few who had gone ahead and rebooked to Miami connections only to not be let off the plane.
Passing through immigration/customs in Charlotte was remarkably quick and easy. We were both a little disappointed that we did not get to use our Global Entry, just a quick wave through by a border agent. A short wait to board in Charlotte and 55 minutes later, we landed at Dulles. The events of these two days will fade and we’ll be left with memories of tortoises, sea turtles, sloths, tarantulas, an array of birds, among others and great experiences across the equator and back.
