Those are fairly reliable (I'd recommend staying away from WD for SSDs for a while; they have had a BAD problem with SSDs in certain lines for quite a while).

HDDs do go bad eventually, but you can recover data from an HDD while if an SSD loses data it's just gone. I'd say plan to replace every 5-7 years just to be on the safe side, but you'll likely find that the drives actually last longer than that.

You can also look into getting archival DVDs and storing data on those, but depending on how much data you have that might not be practical or affordable. Archival optical media lasts quite a long time - 10-20 years is the general estimate - but you need a working optical drive (you can buy an external) and a plan for storage and access.

I personally use an external hard drive that I replace every five years and I hang on to the old drives I'm replacing just in case; I haven't actually had any of those old drives fail on me yet and I'm on my third one. the diy router's wifi hasn't worked for a couple days. i've just been coping and using the isp router's wifi on my phone instead. i needed to print something. i figured it would be easier to fix the wifi than reconfigure the printer to work on a different network.

So I don't know if I posted much about it, but back around the beginning of December my external hard drive died and it was a huge pain in the ass. I got a replacement and all of my data is backed up via Carbonite, so it's not a huge deal, just an inconvenience. But the drive was making weird noises from the beginning, which was alarming but I ignored. Now the drive is fucking up all kinds of weird ways. After being on for so long, it slows to a crawl and actually brings all Windows functions with it. Even restarting, it will eventually boot but it sits at the screen for probably 5-10 minutes. As soon as it's unplugged, it boots immediately. Usually turning it off and back on resolves this temporarily though.

That seems to have stopped, but last night it just randomly stopped working. I eventually managed to get it recognized in Disk Management again, but it was changed to Read Only for some reason. So I fixed that and tried to run CHKDSK and it just gives me an unspecified error. But, it is working for the time being.

I was kind of annoyed because I ordered it from Newegg and their replacement period has passed. But I checked into Seagate's warrant and it'll actually cover the drive until something like September 2025. I highly doubt this is going to last into 2025 even, so I'm good. Kind of a pain in the ass to have to recover all of my files again, Carbonite's download speeds aren't the best so it takes a little over a month, but at least it can be replaced for free and won't cost me anything.

So annoying though.

I love that people are learning about the value of owning things but while buying or ripping something to mp3 is super easy, I do think physical media is the better option. I think this because I have had the double whammy of both my computer harddrive and my backup drive die at the same time. My backup drive was even less than a year old so I didn't initially have that much concern when, after I recovered my computer, I booted the backup to restore my backed up files and music and only thing it said was "khk khk whhhrrrrr khk khk". I thought popping that thing in the freezer would work. It usually does when the disk is just struggling to start spinning. But nope.

What I finally had to do was to take apart the casing and get the drive itself and put it in a dock and then Linux managed to see the data and get it bulk downloaded. And I have it. But it's all unnamed, anonymous files that I can only sort by filetype. It's still mostly like that bc it's a lot to sort through manually and it was definitely somehow too much for tag autofetching, that kept stuck on a loop of fetching tags for the exact same 1000 songs, over and over. So like, I have 1000 first songs, alphabetically. The rest is just a random mass of mp3, ogg, and flac files.

It is the world's luckiest thing I had not given in to the pressure to "clean and get rid of" my physical CDs so I was not left with 0 music. It is also probably why I now have such a hard time to let go of Spotify streaming and go back to files on a hard drive. It gives me anxiety to trust all that to something that can break so randomly.

Also, my solution to storage taking a lot of space was to just get rid of the jewel cases. I store the disks in a disk archive box and the sleeves in a folder. The cases I donated to the local library. They go through a lot of those bc customers break the cases all the time.

Also, some people do always bring up the data rot or CD rot and a lifespan of like 10-15 years or whatever. My oldest CDs are from like 1995 and still work. I haven't lost a single one to any kind of rot. My LPs are doing even better.

What to do if your computer accidentally erases all your previous data by sudden shutdown? Is there a way to recover it?

Well it would be helpful to know what specifically happened to your radiocomputer, but broadly data recovery is a process of retrieving lost or corrupted data when the data stored cannot be accessed in a usual way. In most cases there are four phases to data recovery

Repair the hard disk drive

Image the drive to a new drive or a disk image file

Logical recovery of files, partition, MBR and filesystem structures

Repair damaged files that were retrieved

Hey everyone, I'm alive... just needed a few days' downtime. I'm back to catching up on sim things now. Last week was a pretty rough one for me, given that TS2 is my main coping mechanism...

Remember when my Floors subfolder got corrupted in one of my external hard drives? Well, I booted my PC up on Thursday only to find that the same thing had happened to the entirety of my other external hard drive! The one I spent three days backing up all my CC to! And it had all my extracted sim data from Kulo Sena, the backups of my hoods and their download folders from various points in time... I was screaming.

However, there is a happy ending to this story... *knocks on wood* My mum, who is an absolute superhero, plugged the corrupted drive into her laptop and spent the next full day and a half running a disk scan on it. She managed to recover most of the data, including the backup of a side hood I've been playing lately, so I can play again. I got a third external drive today - we're currently backing up everything from the repaired drive onto it. And although the most recent backup of my Kulo Sena cast on that drive was from July, I did manage to find my most recent extracted sims in my SavedSims folder on my Linux desktop.

Whew.
