Nothing is better than trying to look for reference material for a project and finding something with every dimension you could dream of.
I’m working on a project where I digitally model and 3D print a bunch of the ammo from the game Hunt: Showdown. The game is set in the late 1800s/early 1900s, so the rounds used by a bunch of the guns are virtually extinct. As a result, I want to do my little part to help preserve these small bits of history and recreate these obscure cartridges.
Anyways, I was looking for reference material for my model of the .41 Swiss round, used by the Vetterli carbine, and I think I managed to find THE FUCKING PATENT because it has exact measurements in millimeters (what I use in CAD), as well as tolerances (max/min dimensions of sections allowed in production under the patent), and a pattern for the paper patch that would be wrapped around the bullet before being pressed into the cartridge.

What a fucking find.

Sometimes Amazing Things Happen:
Heartbreak and Hope on the Bellevue Hospital Psychiatric Prison Ward
By Elizabeth Ford, MD
It’s an intense book at times but I enjoyed it for the length I got through (191 out of 243 pages).
Chapter Six: Mama Gizzly [pg56]
My favorite people Dr Ford focused on was Kevin, a teenager. It focuses primarily on his need to speak to his mother but the singular telephone plus the friction with the guards making one person’s anxiety percieved as a threat by the guard.
Quote: pg20
Dr Ford describes the Detox Unit. A fella will sober up but the hope is that they’ll go into long term rehab. Some sign an AMA (against Medical advise). Dr Ford explains the risk of leaving but a common reply is…
“Nah, I’m good. […] I’ll just grab another drink when I get out. That will stop the shakes.”
Peter [pg73-79]
“I worked out an arrangement with a psychologist at Riker’s Island to see [Peter] three times a week and focus on very in-the-moment skills for him, like thinking twice before he starts yelling an obscenity at an officer. The therapy and attention worked for awhile, but Peter had a huge out burst the day after the psychologist went on vacation, and he ended up back at Bellevue” [pg74].
The part about the vacation and then getting sent back hit me. Also the lengths that other people in prison at Rikkers did to get sent to Bellevue for a break from it.
Side note: guards
Ex. pg66,81
The guards are a tight knit group. Aggrevate one, you make an enemy of all of them. Also, there are unspoken rules that you aren’t aware of until you cross them. (Ex. The red button to get into the Ward. Don’t press it, just wait)
Chapter 10: A Mother’s Love
Jamel/Steven has schizophrenia, believes some of the delusions, doesn’t believe he’s ill, refuses all medication.
What really got me was how long it took since Steven didn’t trust doctors so Dr Ford had to convince his mother, Sarah, to that Steven needs Clozapine “…the magic wonder of psychosis, but […] a tiny fraction of patients who take it develop a dangerous reduction in white blood cells.”
So Dr Ford goes through the long process of convincing Sarah (who’s African American like her son, very understandable not trusting docs either) and eventually convinces her. Then convinces Steven.
It’s light night and day. Steven had violent outbursts before, yelling racial ephiphets, then goes a 180 and is appologizing, behavior improves etc on the new drug.
Everyone’s happy.
Then the white blood cell count drops. Steven is pissed, so is his mom.
Just utterly devestating.
Later on: self-unaliving
Not getting into it. Upsetting to read but something I want to look into the causes of why, especially for marginalized groups in prison.
Take aways
I need to do more research on this part. This book’s scope is on the periphery of mental health in prison. It feels like getting it straight from the source would be more productive. Dr Ford gives some interesting insights but it also feels like, in some parts, there’s bad -on-the-back vibe where it feels like some of the details are taken in a nicer light.
Thank again, I got no evidence of that so yeah.
Also, since this is from the perspective of a white doc, I’d love to get docs of other perspectives and people in prison who are a variety of skin color and how that affects their experience.

REASONS FOR BAKING PROBLEMS
Clipping from The Proctor & Gamble Company, BAKING TIPS FROM THE DUNCAN HINES KITCHENS, undated
INACCURATE OVEN TEMPERATURES ACCOUNT FOR A MAJORITY OF BAKING PROBLEMS
If your cakes show indications of under-baking, try raising the oven setting about 25°F. If the problem appears to be over-baking, lower the oven setting about 25°F.
If you continue to have difficulty, HAVE YOUR OVEN CHECKED FOR ACCURACY. Call your local gas or electric company, or a range service person. Or, you can test it yourself with an oven thermometer. Simply set the oven regulator and place the thermometer inside the oven for about 20-30 minutes. Then check the thermometer to see if it registers the same as the oven regulator setting. If it isn’t exactly right, have the oven professionally adjusted.
Specific baking problems and probable causes are listed below. Problems associated with inaccurate oven temperatures are indicated by an asterisk (*).
CAKE DID NOT RISE
1. Pans too large
*2. Oven temperature too low - under-baking
3. Under-beating batter
4. Added too much liquid
5. Didn’t use cold water / cold eggs during hot weather
CAKE FELL OR DIPPED / WAS SOGGY, COMPACT, OR HEAVY
*1. Oven running too cool - under-baking
2. Cake removed from oven before completely baked
3. Too much liquid / eggs too large
4. Extra ingredients added to the batter
5. Excessive over-beating
6. Used pans that were too deep, eg. 3” or 4” deep
7. Didn’t use cold water / cold eggs during hot weather
CAKE RUNS OVER PAN
*1. Oven temperature too low
2. Pans too small
3. Batter unevenly divided between pans or cupcake tins. Fill pans about one-half full
4. Too much liquid
5. Oven racks not level
6. Pans not placed in center of oven
CAKE STICKS TO PAN / DIFFICULT TO REMOVE
1. Pans not greased heavily enough (use at least ½ Tbsp. shortening for each pan)
2. Cooled improper length of time (Before 10 minutes cake is still warm and tender and breaks easily. After 20 minutes the shortening begins to harden and can “glue” the cake to the pan.)
3. Cake not loosened with knife or spatula before removal
CAKE WET / MOIST / WEEPS WHEN STORED
*1. Under-baking
2. Not completely cooled before frosted or stored
3. Frosting a frozen cake before it is completely thawed
4. Freezing a frosted cake
5. Storing in an air-tight container causing moisture build-up
CAKE SHRUNKEN / TOO SMALL
1. Pans too large
*2. Oven temperature too high - over-baking
*CAKE SPLIT, HUMPED / PEAKED TOO MUCH, SHRANK, HAD HOLES & TUNNELS, DRY, COARSE, CRUMBLY, BURNED
All these problems indicate over-baking which results from too long a bake time or too hot an oven. Incidentally, the majority of homemakers we interviewed had ovens which were running higher than their regulators indicated.
CUSTARD-LIKE STREAK ACROSS CAKE
1. Streak across bottom of cake - too much liquid
*2. Streak under top crust of cake - under-baking
3. Extra ingredients added to the batter
4. Excessive over-beating
5. Failure to scrape of improperly scraping bottom / sides of the bowl
LAYERS UNEVEN
1. Range or oven rack not level
2. Pans not centered in oven
*3. Oven temperature too high
4. Too much liquid
5. Under-beating
UNEVEN BROWNING
1. Oven not preheated
2. Used dark, dented, or warped pans
3. Range or oven rack not level
CAKE DIFFICULT TO FROST
1. Cake not removed from pan properly (see CAKE STICKS TO PAN / DIFFICULT TO REMOVE)
2. Cake cooled in wrong position
3. Cake not completely cool before attempting to frost it
4. Excess crumbs not brushed away
5. Frosting not of a good spreading consistency

Loot I got from Bucon, a small fantasy and Scifi book con in Dreieich, today.
A dice set, a funny post card and a book with reference poses for fantasy art.

I think this book is pretty neat. There are reference poses for different types of fantasy characters.

This postcard just made me laugh. It is a stupid pun, but I love it.

Special edition dices from the upcoming Dreieichcon, a con for roleplaying games, that I plan to attend with some friends.

Self-centered People
Self-centered people are those who focus primarily on their own needs, desires, and interests, often at the expense of others. Some common traits of self-centered people include:
Lack of empathy: Self-centered people often struggle to understand or empathize with the feelings and perspectives of others. They may be dismissive or uncaring towards other people's needs and concerns.
Selfishness: Self-centered people prioritize their own needs and wants above all else. They may be unwilling to compromise or consider the needs of others.
Attention-seeking behavior: Self-centered people may engage in attention-seeking behavior, such as boasting or exaggerating their accomplishments, in order to draw attention and admiration to themselves.
Difficulty with criticism: Self-centered people may struggle to handle criticism or negative feedback, as they see it as a personal attack on their ego.
Lack of accountability: Self-centered people may struggle to take responsibility for their actions or admit when they are wrong. They may blame others or external circumstances for their problems, rather than taking ownership and working to make things right.
Manipulative behavior: Self-centered individuals may use manipulative tactics to get what they want, such as lying, guilt trips, or playing the victim.
Inconsiderate of others: Self-centered individuals may disregard the needs and feelings of others, acting in ways that are selfish or disrespectful.
Overall, self-centered people tend to prioritize their own needs and desires above all else, and may struggle to understand or empathize with the perspectives of others. This can lead to difficulties in relationships and social interactions, as well as feelings of loneliness and isolation.

COOKING TERMS
From The Settlement Cook Book, 1965 edition, page 33
Bake: Cook by dry heat in an oven or, as applied to pancakes, on a griddle
Barbecue: Cook over an open fire on a spit or in an oven, usually basting with a savory sauce
Baste: Moisten food as it cooks with sauce, pan drippings, or fat
Blanch: Cook in, or simply cover with, boiling water for a few minutes in order to make food easy to peel or as a preliminary to freezing (vegetables), or in order to precook food before further preparation
Boil: Cook in boiling liquid in which bubbles rise vigorously to the surface. The boiling point of water is 212°F at sea level.
Braise: Cook covered in a small amount of liquid in the oven or on top of the range
Broil: Cook by exposure to direct heat under the broiler of a gas or electric range, in an electric broiler, or over an open fire
Cream: Blend ingredients with a spoon or fork or in an electric beater until softened and creamy. Used principally to describe the combining of butter and sugar for a cake.
Dice: Cut into small cubes about ¼ inch in size.
Dot: Scatter small amounts of specified ingredients, usually butter, on top of food
Dredge: Cover with a coating of flour, crumbs, or cornmeal
Fold: Blend beaten egg white or whipped cream into a thicker, heavier mixture using a gentle under-and-over motion that does not break down the air bubbles
Fricassee: Stew pieces of fowl or meat and serve with thickened sauce
Fry or Pan-Fry: Cook in hot fat in a frying pan or skillet. To deep-fry requires using enough fat to cover the food completely.
Grill: see Broil.
Marinate: Soak in a liquid containing an acid such as lemon juice, vinegar, or wine, plus seasonings and sometimes oil. Used to flavor and tenderize meat, fish, and poultry.
Parboil: Precook until partially done. See Blanch.
Poach: Cook eggs, fish, chicken, fruit, and other delicate foods in hot liquid at a temperature below the boiling point
Puree: Reduce food to smooth, uniform consistency by pressing it through a sieve, food mill, or potato ricer, or by whirling it in an electric blender
Roast: Cook by dry heat in an oven, on a spit in an oven, over charcoal, or in an electric rotisserie
Sauté: Cook in small amount of hot fat
Scald: Heat liquid, usually milk, to temperature just below the boiling point
Score: Mark with a sharp knife or with a fork to make decorative lines
Sear: Brown quickly at high temperature
Simmer: Cook slowly, just below the boiling point
Steam: Cook over boiling water in steam without letting the water touch the food, contained in a colander or in a mold on a rack. Sometimes means cooking in the top of a double boiler over boiling water or in a very small amount of boiling water in a saucepan.
