Tom Karen OBE, March 1926 - January 2, 2023. The British designer who was head of Ogle Design 1962-1999 has died. Karen's work included the Bond Bug, Reliant Scimitar GTE and the Chopper bicycle. He famously had strong opinions about fastbacks, he claimed to be "baffled" by "the case for fastbacks" because he thought there was "nothing good to be said for them except that some people think they look alright". "Aerodynamically they're lousy, headroom in the back is lousy, for visibility they're lousy, with a lot of glass they're lousy, from a weight point of view, and they give no boot access".

News: 1979 ‘MG B-EAST’ is 2023 Hot Wheels Legends Tour UK Winner
We are big fans of Hot Wheels up here on the top floor of MotorMartin Towers so we were very excited to see the following arrive on the news desk and are putting the post out in full: A 1979 MGB GT nicknamed ‘the B-EAST’ is set to represent the UK on the global stage and stake its claim to be recreated as a 1:64 scale die-cast model – after winning this year’s Hot Wheels Legends Tour UK at…

Reliant Scimitar GTE SE5
Sporting estate cars are very much in vogue on 21st century European roads, with Audi, BMW, and Mercedes all marketing high performance cars you can fit a wardrobe in. But back in 1968 the Reliant Scimitar GTE created the genre by combining a sporting chassis and drivetrain with an Ogle Design body that incorporated a large load area behind the two front seats.Ford’s Capri 3-litre provided the powertrain, although Reliant opted to locate the rear axle properly with four trailing arms and a Watt’s Linkage, rather than relying on cart springs like the donor car. Coupled with a four-speed plus overdrive manual gearbox the Essex V6 leant the new model impressive performance, and its looks gained admirers from all quarters, including, famously, Princess Anne, who owned several examples.A 0-60mph time of 8.5 seconds and a top speed of nearly 120mph made Scimitar owners amongst the fastest antiques dealers in the land, and that glass fibre bodywork resisted the British climate far better than the steel used on most cars of the period. The GTE was an instant hit and soon Reliant were making four for every booted GT they built.

Reliant Scimitar GTE SE5A, 1971/2. The Scimitar was designed by Tom Karen of Ogle as a shooting brake version of the earlier SE4 coupé. It was Reliant's most successful model with 4311 being produced between 1968 and 1975. They were all powered by Ford's 3.0 litre "Essex" V6

What cars does Anne and Tim own
They have owned several different cars throughout the years! 🚘
Most famously Anne has owned a Reliant Scimitar from 1971, with a private reg. 1420 refers to her to her position as Colonel-in-Chief of the Royal 14/20th Hussars!

In the nineties (and probably for years before that) Tim drove a mustard colour MG sports car, that might have looked something like this (it’s so tiny and he’s so tall how did he fit?)

They’ve owned various Rangerovers and Landrovers throughout their marriage and Anne did even before they met! (Being farmers it’s the norm to have them to move things around the farm I suppose)

I don’t think they have one but Tim was seen driving a very snazzy Aston Martin sportscar at Sandringham with Anne’s cousin David in January 2022 (taking it out for a spin!)

Then they have the royal Bentleys, which they get taken to engagements in, I think the newest is an electric one, we stan! (The heart eyes 😭)

"The Compliant Golden-Hooped Rod. Weight: thirteen thousand five hundred pounds."
And here it is! The most iconic weapon of Journey to the West! Sun Wukong's weight and length shifting magical rod!
I didn't know the details like the golden hoops on both ends, or that it was made of iron, but nonetheless it is a very fitting weapon for Sun Wukong, and for his building style in combat.
He learned shapeshifting, the taoist arts of transformation, and the cloud somersault, all of these point to a fighting style very reliant on quick thinking, and flexibility. Sun Wukong needs to be fast, flexible, and have the element of surprise to win his upcoming (I feel in my heart these are coming very soon) battles. So he needed a weapon that reflected that, not something that could hinder his movements like the scimitar, or something that can only do most damage with one end like the fork or the halberd.
What Sun Wukong needed was something that could server as an extra limb for his body, something that he could use with his transformations on the go, and most importantly; according to his words, something that had sufficient weight.
And what is more fitting for a monkey than a heavy stick to hit people with?
