Tom Karen OBE, March 1926 - January 2, 2023. The British designer who was head of Ogle Design 1962-1999 has died. Karen's work included the Bond Bug, Reliant Scimitar GTE and the Chopper bicycle. He famously had strong opinions about fastbacks, he claimed to be "baffled" by "the case for fastbacks" because he thought there was "nothing good to be said for them except that some people think they look alright". "Aerodynamically they're lousy, headroom in the back is lousy, for visibility they're lousy, with a lot of glass they're lousy, from a weight point of view, and they give no boot access".

I was still working in the aircraft industry in 1953 (having studied aeronautical engineering) when I started to build a compact, two seat, three wheeler with an aluminium body. The windscreen folded forward to provide access. It wasn’t pretty but highly original.

Reliant bought out Bond and needed to put a new model in their range. We were given a chassis, a shortened version of the one destined for the Robin, to produce a sporty two seater. We developed the package around this. The challenge I set myself was to create a body of utmost simplicity: the fewest possible number of panels to build the body, all of them to come out of moulds without undercuts […], a single ‘door’ with a flat windscreen. The prototype, called Rogue, achieved all this and the enthusiasm for the project at Ogle was palpable. Reliant approved what we had done but sensibly asked for some boot space and widening of the front end. They also hit on the inspired name ‘Bug’.

i think there's something very interesting about the fact that irl, turtles aren't very social or familial in any sense but the ninja turtles are incredibly social and love caring for others and this is arguably the greatest example of their humanity

HEADCANON TIME!

When Tails arrived to earth, he was fascinated with the organisms that inhabited the planet. He spent weeks studying the flora and fauna in Green Hills as soon as he moved in with the Wachowskis. Taking note of his interests, Sonic takes his little brother to the forest to get a closer view of the subjects he’s interested in. Sonic and Tails would spend hours wandering around in the forest documenting all of the species within the area. This has become a weekly ritual between the two. On one of their nature walk, Tails spots a few pill bugs rolling into balls. He scoops a few of them up to take home to study in his lab, claiming that they're just as cool as his big bro.

I wanted to make a small art piece for Wholesome Sonic & Tails. It’s always a pleasure to see them appear on my Tumblr dash every Wednesday!

Small but significant character moments that I actually really adore are from both the times we see the boys as tots. There is a reoccurrence that happens in both of them that I find so incredibly interesting.

For the turtle tot short, Splinter leaves the boys with weapons. In the short, Raph is the one who suggests they do “what Lou Jitsu would do” and Leo is the one who takes point when Splinter comes back to reprimand them. Leo, in taking point, is the one to defend them and get Splinter off their tails.

And then, in the flashback regarding the Kuroi Yōroi helmet, Raph is the one who grabs and throws “Skully” as a way to replace their missing ball which breaks it into pieces, but Leo is the one who speaks for the group and rushes into action to fix the teapot.

I love this for multiple reasons, but the biggest are how it shows that Raph has always been inclined toward the bold and fun and making the plans to include his brothers in what he loves and believes they’d love, whereas Leo has always been inclined to be the “Face” of the group and shoulder the attention even if it’s potentially negative all while coming up with on the spot attempts to fix the situation.
