I wonder: Do Americans know about american school buses? Not their existence in general, but how they're seen overseas.

Over here, they're one of the symbols of America, on par with the Statue of Liberty, the flag, the Eagle, and well ahead of any chain restaurant you can name. People won't know any US states, but they will know these vehicles.

The thing is, here in Germany, we don't have dedicated school buses. The general idea is that kids go to school on their own. When that's not practical, they're expected to use (and given free tickets for) public transit. Public transit is designed around this requirement; there are many places where there is a bus, and anyone can get on it, but the route and timetable really only makes sense for school children. In case a dedicated school bus is really needed, that's generally subcontracted out, and the lines either use something like a Sprinter Van for smaller routes, or a normal city or interurban bus (often a used one that's a bit older). School trips are normal public transit, or a rented bus, typically a coach or regional bus.

It's not a perfect system, in the past couple of years there's been an epidemic of people bringing their kids to school in their cars instead of letting them walk, which is less than ideal. It is what it is. But building a dedicated network of public transit lines only for students, and building dedicated vehicles only for that, has never occurred to anyone here.

Of course we know about these buses, from movies and such, but they're as foreign here as cacti or pick-up trucks (actually we're seeing more and more of these here) or yellow cabs (all europeans will assume all cabs in the US are yellow until they actually visit).

You do see these buses here at times, because people still generally like the idea of the US, even if they have a lot of issues with a lot of details, and so folks bring them over, along with stretch limos and stuff (also not really a thing here). And of course, if someone goes to all that trouble, they don't do it to haul school kids, they rent it out for city tours or as a party bus or whatever.

So you see these yellow things as a symbol of faraway places, scenic vistas, some vague undefined idea of freedom that doesn't necessarily hold up to any contact with reality, and it's just a huge part of the whole US aesthetic.

And then you go to a student exchange with the US, and you finally get the chance: You yourself get to ride in one of these iconic chrome yellow buses! It looks just like in the movies! You get in, you drive in them a little…

…and you realise they're shit. Just the worst buses in the western world. Terrible suspension. Uncomfortable seats with weirdly high backs (so they don't have to put seatbelts in, they just restrict how far kids can fly in an accident). Everything made out of the cheapest materials. Turns out the reason why the US uses school buses like that instead of normal modern city buses, which the US has, is to save money and because they just hate kids.

And then it hits you why US Americans say "as American as apple pie", a dish that is made and enjoyed literally anywhere in the world, instead of "as American as yellow school buses". Of course the Americans already knew all this. They got tortured by these things forever. It would never occur to them to see this as a symbol of America, it's just a normal part of life for them. It's a symbol of school and school life and sometimes normalcy, and tells us that these actors getting out of it are supposed to be teenagers, nothing more.

But most people in Europe have, of course, never ridden on these buses. So when they see them in movies and TV, that's a giant big yellow signifier that we're not in Hessen or Wallonia or wherever anymore. A symbol of a different world, one that may be at most a once-in-a-lifetime-experience for most people, just like a picture of a tropical beach, Mayan Pyramids, the Great Wall of China, or Hildesheim (there's no reason to go there twice). And I think Americans don't know that, and that's fascinating.

CHAPTER 1: Hollowsdill

Hello, my name is: (Insert Y/N)

You are an author and an artist but lately you’ve been feeling a little lost. Your writings and your art are no longer the same. Getting inspiration from movies you decided you should stay in a small town for inspiration for my next book. 

Small towns were always interesting to you. A close knit community where everyone knew each other, all the drama, all the secrets. So quaint and cute but also mysterious and intriguing. Could there possibly be a dark secret hidden amongst the smiling faces?

You thought Hollowsdill might have been the perfect place but after looking around you realized that the only places available for you to stay were decrepit and over priced. Being desperate you went looking anyway. Maybe the places were not as bad as the internet showed.

When you got to the town it wasn’t exactly what you expected. People gave you shifty looks and there was an ominous silence. The buildings did look to be in good shape except for the few ins scattered around. They looked as if no one had stayed in them for years. Disappointed, you headed toward the inn that had gotten the best reviews out of the ones in the town (Which wasn’t saying much.) which was a small rental room on top of the general store. 

When walking up to the store something on the bulletin board caught your eye. It was a flyer with a picture of a beautiful building. Under it said Hollowsdill Stay In. The thing that caught your eye the most however was the big writing at the bottom that said: 

$12.00 A MONTH!

It seemed too good to be true. On the back of the flier it said, “Find more details in the general store.” Reading this you decided to go inside and check it out. The clerk was an older man, overweight, with a greasy look to him. You inquired about the Stay In and all he said was, “fifty cents” Slightly confused, you handed him 2 quarters and he handed you a booklet with the same flier on the front. Inside was a list of amenities. There weren’t pictures of them but there were a lot listed and it said it was included with the $12 price. There were however pictures of some beautiful scenery that you knew would be great inspiration for my art. 

Even though there were no pictures of the amenities and you couldn’t find the place online it was too good of an opportunity to pass up. You called up on the general store's pay phone. They had one vacancy and you took it immediately. All you had to do was wait for the ride to take you the next morning. So you rented a room in the general store for the night.

In the morning you rushed out carrying your bags and almost dropped them when you saw a limousine parked at front of the door. In a white letters on the back window was the words Hollowsdill Stay In

You knocked on the driver's side and the window and it rolled down.

Driver: Y/N?

Y/N: Yes, is this for me?

Driver: …

Without a word the driver stepped out of the car, grabbed your bags and threw them in the trunk. Then they opened the back door for you and got back into the front. You sat in the back and closed the door behind you. You were still a bit confused but there was a wall between you and the driver so you couldn’t talk to him. Instead you looked out the windows.

You drove out of the town and things began to look more jovial. Soon the paved road turned into the cream colored masonry you had seen leading up to the house in the photo and the limo began to drive up a steep twisting up climb. The sides of the “driveway” were aligned with beautiful hedge work and rose bushes and it stretched on so far that you couldn't see the end of the street. Finally after about five minutes he pulled up into a large circular parking lot in front of the beautiful mansion. It seemed to be just as beautiful as the flyer had said which confused you even more on why it only cost $12.00 a month, but you weren’t about to complain. 

Standing on the steps was a petite woman with red violet hair and warm golden brown eyes. She wore a copper vest over a ruffled white blouse and a tight plaid skirt with heels that matched her vest. She smiled warmly and waved at you as you stepped out of the car. As soon as you did so the driver drove away quickly.

CHAPTER TWO: Welcome Welcome

Woman: (Waving) Hello! You must be Y/N! I’m so glad you will be staying with us, at the Stay In. (She points to the building behind her.

I’ve actually always wondered about the jealous worker thing like image we as readers still try to make the best of everything and try to hang out and make new friends but the rest of the workers just either don’t wanna hang out since their already mad or just don’t like reader because of the same reason and readers over here depressed about havin no friends and Val’s ass is like “it’s ok baby cakes, I’ll be your friend :>” 😏😮‍💨

The idea of like, Valentino having a spare old set that isn't being used at the porn studio that he rents to you as a room, is already enough of a stretch right, but sometimes I sit and think like, how extremely unsafe that is for so many reasons. You have to go elsewhere to eat or bathe, locking up your room with a spare key (and of course Valentino also has a key and will let himself in whenever he pleases), and sometimes I think about like, how maliciously bullied you could be

You step out of your room as Val texts you to run him and get him some food, and you're literally walking in the door with it when someone deliberately trips you and makes you drop it all. Oh, you just got some new clothes after wearing hand me downs for ages to save money? Whoops, a coworker of yours 'accidentally' crashes into you and spills drinks all over you. A particular possessive dancer doesn't like how Valentino complimented your makeup? You return from running errands to your room broken into, trashed, LOOTED

Like imagine if Valentino had some sort of gift placed into your room, unwrapped, and when he sees that you haven't seen it, he accompanies you to go see what you've got, and you both walk in on your room either straight up trashed and his gifts ruined, or the thieves still in there and playing around with whatever he's gotten you (probably some sort of makeup or jewelry) and of course he intervenes then, because they're wasting his money

I can also imagine like, he isn't being 100% fake about it, but Valentino absolutely uses the fact he has tons of power (both as am Overlord and as your boss) to seem like the gracious savior to your sorry state. Oh, you tearfully tell him you're going to be late on rent? Oh, no problem doll, you've been so good at being on time that he can let it slide just this once. Oh, you were robbed on your way to bring him rent? Take a lil trip outside to ride around in the limo with him and point the punk out. A customer at the strip club groped you? Everyone else is told to put up with it, but anyone who does it to you is given a warning first and a bullet second

Like he absolutely knows how to manipulate and mindfuck people. Poor Reader is so scared and alone and needing support and he's in the position to make your life significantly easier. Can you imagine if you've worked for him a few months and you kind of comment that you don't have much money for anything besides rent, and he tells you, you know what, why doesn't he bump that number down, since you've proven yourself to be so nice and trustworthy and you've also been such a good little groupie for him? Like just like that? And sure, the reality is he was privately overcharging you what the room was worth anyways, but it doesn't change the absolute relief you feel. He starts being nice to you and you fall into the trap of "well, yeah sure he's a pimp, but, I never see any of that, and he's nice to me, and I have to take what I can get"

I'm still an absolute fiend for the idea of "customer really scares the shit out of you and maybe even tries to hurt you and Val uses the moment to his advantage". Like since you just wait on a small area of people, mostly exclusively Valentino, maybe you have a lot of free time or do other tasks, so imagine someone tells you to take the trash out, ignoring your protests that going out by yourself isn't really safe, and sure enough, a customer who's been coming on to you is waiting outside and you just barely get away from him after he tries to grab you. Another shift, and he's in the club, waiting for you by the bathrooms. This guy is stalking you, telling you to stop playing hard to get, maybe he even grabs you so hard he leaves a bruise. And you don't tell Val because you've heard certain other stories about, "well if you aren't one of his favorites, he doesn't care as long as you can keep making money" so there you are, pouring Valentino another refill and he turns his head when he sees your hands are just SHAKING, and he reaches out to tilt your chin up and ask, "what happened?" and you start to smile and act like it's fine but you just burst into tears because this guy is literally threatening shit like fucking you with a knife, and you roll up your sleeve to show the Overlord the big dark bruise where you were grabbed

Like you've been trying to keep to yourself and really not even talk to Val because you know he's still pretty scary and he knows you as this kind of shy quiet little cutie he has t had the time to start giving his full attention to and now you're just big boo hoo blubbering tears, "I'm really scared Mister Valentino"

And to top off the favorite part of the idea, obviously I can see this scenario happening a few different ways, but imagine after you breakdown and tell Val a few details, you just run off because you're crying and feeling humiliated and you're thinking he doesn't care so you just feel stupid and weak, and THIS is when your stalker appears again, and Val rocks up with that hot pink gun of his when he decides, "hey my lil shorty has been gone too long" and he walks in on this guy trying to rip your clothes off, strangle you, or both. And of course you run up to the Overlord just trembling and clutching at him and hiding behind him because he's huge and scary and of course, Valentino certainly doesn't mind how you're clinging to him. And before you know it, he's got you sitting next to him on his sofa, sidled right up besides him, you being very much EAGER to cuddle with him like this since you know, or at least terrified enough to be convinced, that no one is going to bother you while you're with the Overlord.

And of course, it's a week later, and he still wants you to cuddle up to him again, and again, and again, and eventually you realize, "oh wait, he's no longer actually giving me a choice in the matter, I'm just straight up like his new girlfriend" and by that point he's already making plans to get you all fixed up at the salon with him and take you to his stylist to get you a little red jacket like what he has Angel wear sometimes and, you know just #possessivepimpthings where he officially begins to transition you into his propery

Tbh I'm starting to become like obsessed with the idea of him quite literally taking you everywhere to the point its virtually 24/7 and you're living in his house and sleeping in his bed and BATHING WITH HIM because he's treating you like a partner/pet and controls every aspect of your life down to the shampoo you use and your skincare routine, but that's a story for another time 👀

shoyo leaned his head on the shabby limo window as he looked out, taking in a deep intake of breath.

it's been around two hours since the last conversation and ever since, it feels as though life was on speed run.

before shoyo knew it, he was fitted in a fancy white blouse with an obnoxiously big bow along with a black overcoat adorned with golden embroidery, fitting for a prince such as shoyo right? especially since all of it was fake.

a fake looking suit on someone who was going to be the biggest poser of the night. sitting in a fake limo that was stolen for a rondom nearby dealership (customary from the driver herself, saeko).

shoyo rolled his head to the other side, to glance at the other fakes that joined him along this journey. tobio, koushi and kei, all dressed up to the dimes, of their own budget of course. each having their own fancy embroidery of different colours that seemingly suited them well.

"well, think we're he...re.." saeko said, trailing off on her last sentence as hiroo came into view.

it truly was a magnificent sight, some houses looked like castles, with their giant and antique structures. others looked like what only the future could hold, so modern and altruistic. the security to even get in was astounding, bodyguards on bodyguards standing around the gate, which almost reached the clouds with how tall and proud it stood.

the gate itself looked like it costed twelve times the teams rent, the was a solid black with gold tips that held honestly quite mystical designs. the bars were interwoven in intricate patterns, which kinda represented hiroo, its history is so tangled and messy that it would take years just to unpack just one story from beginning to end.

through the gates, shoyo could see a house that had a long red carpet stretched out, two bodyguards with a list and a red rope with gold stands on either side, he could tell it was the l/n's house given that it was the most extravagant house out of the whole neighborhood.

they were kept behind many cars, which really didn't surprise them. so they used this time to get their story straight.

"ok so, we are harvard students that came back to japan and we do drug dealing, ok?" shoyo said.

"well, not with that accent you don't!" saeko scolded.

"what do you mean?!" shoyo asked panicked.

"you should like you're from karasuno, these people pronounce every syllable properly, rarely ever use slang and use big words like 'indubitably' " kei commented, chuckling whilst throwing his head back on the seat.

"well, since you seem to know everything, you do all the talking!" shoyo whined childishly.

"i think the fuck not, this was your idea so you take initiative." kei scoffed.

"actually, it's was yuu's idea!" shoyo scoffed back.

"you both share the same braincell and since he isn't here right now, you take accountability for his stupidity." kei replied.

"his idea wasn't stupid, you useless blonde." shoyo sassily responded.

"shoyo, we aren't gonna get in. let's be real, they won't let us in and bokuto isn't gonna come and save our asses for some coke he can easily buy from anywhere else." kei now turned his head to look directly at shoyo.

"you're so negative, anything could happen!" shoyo rebuttled.

"yeah like us getting kicked into the streets-"

"oh my fucking god kei, do you ever try and be happy?" shoyo interrupted him.

"shoyo what the fuck is good about this? this plan isn't going to fucking work, this isn't fucking disney." kei chuckled.

"guys please calm do-"

"yeah because in tsukki-land, it's fucking hell, rain and thunder where everyone talks about the saddest parts of their day." shoyo looked kei up and down.

"and in shoyo land, everyone dances and sings whilst skipping over rainbows." kei spat out.

"at least im fucking happy with myself, unlike you who literally hates everyone including yourself."

"name please." the bodyguard said through the open window.

everyone froze, shoyo and lei's arguing distracted everyone so no one knew what the hell to say- well not everyone.

"i'm going to be a pain in the ass right now but, we are a friend of bokuto koutarou? i know everyone says that but we got a late invite since we only just landed from massachusetts this morning. we asian-americans love a good party so we couldn't say no." tobio chuckled after speaking english with a perfect american accent.

"i'm sorry, but if you're not on the list you will not be coming in." the bodyguard said sternly.

"no can do sir, don't worry, ill call my people and sort this out quickly." tobio smiled, grabbing his phone and dailing tetsurō.

"hey, could you please notify koutarou that we're outside. he forgot to put our names on the list so now it's starting a whole conundrum. thanks." tobio ended the call.

"soon, your little ear piece will get the notification that we will be let it, so don't worry your handsome little head about it." tobio winked at him sitting back in his seat and waiting.

no more than a minute later, that exactly happened.

begrudgingly, the bodyguard notified the others to let them through.

"hey, no need to apologise." tobio smiled, waving at the bodyguard as saeko drove through.

soon, tobio sat back and let out a shaky breath he didn't know he was holding in, bouncing his legs as he let his nerves show.

everyone in the car looked at him shockingly, the silence was defending.

"listen, i... watched a lot of american youtubers and shows when i was younger so i know how to do an okay american accent." tobio's face was turning red from embarrassment of everyone looking at him.

"anything to save karasuno.. right?" he let out awkwardly.

"that's the spirit!" koushi laughed loudly, slapping tobios back roughly.

shoyo joined koushi in laughing while kei just smiled softly. maybe there was hope that this would turn out ok.

I've been sporadically watching episodes of bridezillas after spending 6 hrs alone with my stylist in her salon watching it together during my appt and. God.
