I read some of the ask you answered a while back in regards of Victorian travelling and docking, and I got curious: where would a "cruise ship" dock, if it were to arrive in London? Not a Navy ship nor a cargo ship, but one of those ships that people took in order to travel for leisure? Would it dock inside London?
Hi,
Sorry to keep you waiting, I had to do some research as the voyage movements are not as well documented as the trade and Navy Docks in London. I apologise if it's a little noteworthy, but as I said, there's not a lot of informations.
So passengers of the East India Company were taken to the Company's docks and could board from there until the Company itself was dissolved. Others had a harder time of it until 1800, when there were ferry services in London, although not as extensive as from 1830.
Tumblr media
A vessel of the Waterman Steamboat Company in the 1840s. Other steamboats can be seen in the distance on the right of the picture. It appears not to have any below-deck cabins and was therefore probably a ‘short-ferry’, plying between Greenwich and London rather than a long-ferry or designed for longer day-trips. The Waterman’s pier at Greenwich was constructed to take a million passengers a year.
In 1837 steamships ran between Kew, Richmond, Chelsea, Westminster Bridge, Hungerford Market, London Bridge, Blackwall, Woolwich and Gravesend. Short ferries ran to and from London, Greenwich and Woolwich. Short-haul fares were very low due to cut-throat competition: London Bridge to Westminster cost 1d (a penny) and London Bridge to Chelsea only 2d (2 pence). In the early 1840s there were up to 17 scheduled daily departures from London to Gravesend in both directions.
Tumblr media
The Port of London, with the great Docks and the ferry stations at the Thames around the Isle of Dogs, 1837 (x)
In 1846 there was a steamer from London Bridge to Westminster every four minutes by competing companies for the 15 minute journey. This was the normal ferry service for the working population to get to work but also to enable working families to take a short trip for little money and time. For passengers getting off Blackwall Railway trains, there were also steamers from Brunswick Pier in Blackwall to Gravesend, a journey of about an hour. Most passengers arriving at Gravesend disembarked at Town Pier, but Blackwall Railway Company ships docked at Terrace Pier.
The steamers that docked at Gravesend departed at 7am, providing a way for the town's residents to commute to their jobs in the City or to come to the London Ports from where they could sail to Europe itself. From London Bridge passengers could also board the steamers that went to the major seaside resorts, a popular route for middle class families who spent the summer there, only the husbands commuted daily to work in London itself. In those days the ferries were called husband boats. However, the overseas port from which people travelled to Australia or the USA was in Liverpool.
From the 1890s it was London Port and Tilbury from which most passengers travelled, which meant that most of the smaller ones were no longer used and had to be closed.
Well that's what i find and i hope it will help you a bit.
Here is the Book were i found all of this: The History of The Port of London: A Vast Emporium of All Nations, by Peter Stone

The Vancouver Island & Sunshine Coast Loop: A Solo Cycle Tour of BC’s Finest Retirement Communities. Part 2
Day 4: I hit the road at 7am. A quick ride on the Trans Canada woke me up and brought me to my daily bakery stop.
Tumblr media
Serious Coffee for Serious Cyclists.
After second breakfast, I only had to follow one road: the 19A. With wide shoulders and no navigation required, I made good time up the coast. It would have been top notch riding if it wasn’t for the EXCESSIVE WIND that blew all day for NO REASON AT ALL.
Tumblr media
The best views were at Union Bay, where I slowed down a little too much until I realized the ferry I wanted to catch was coming up soon. I gunned it the last 25km to Comox, which was, shockingly, FULL OF HILLS. I gave up on my granny gear zen and let my rage carry me to the ferry terminal, where I caught the 3:25 just in time. The wind refused to chill out so I sat inside and charged my phone while I watched the white caps dance on the ocean.
Once I landed in Powell River it was only a few minutes to the campsite. After 113km my legs once again felt perfectly normal, which was weird. Sitting on a bike saddle, however, was deeply uncomfortable. I decided to walk the 3km to Townsite Brewing, stopping to gorge on veggie korma and stuffed potato naan on the way.
Tumblr media
I didn’t have room for another beer but I drank it anyway because I had biked HUNDREDS OF KILOMETERS to get there.
Tumblr media
I met this beautiful cat on the way back to the campsite, where I quickly fell asleep.
Tumblr media
Day 5 began with gear sorting. It seemed like a lot.
Tumblr media
I was a bit apprehensive about biking on the Sunshine Coast as I heard it was even hillier than Vancouver Island, but if the family camping next to me could bike to Lund from Powell River with a trailer and a young kid, there's no reason Gavin and I couldn't. The hills were very present, but still doable. I only had 27km to go, and I would have enjoyed the long decent into Lund if I knew I wouldn't have to climb back up eventually.
Lund was a tiny, bustling hub. I was surprised at the size of the grocery and liquor store (also surprised there was a liquor store at all). The store didn’t have much fresh produce, but I can live off beans, chips, and hot dogs for DAYS, thank you very much. Next I headed to Nancy's Bakery for a couple sandos and one of their famous blackberry cinnamon buns (which I'd been thinking about since the last time I was there, two years ago). I found a patio spot next to an outlet and gave my phone one last top up, because I couldn’t count on charging anything on Savary Island. With a couple hours before my water taxi reservation, I found myself on my own with nothing to do, which hadn't happened yet on the trip. I decided to call my parents and tell them what I was doing. I promised my mom I’d write a blog post so I could share some photos (hi, mom!). It was bizzy on Savary Island: rubbermaids, bags, boxes of booze, bikes, and a line of trucks lined up the dock. The people quickly dispersed into various homes, cabins, guest houses, resorts, and moss covered trailers. I went up the hill (no matter where I went, it was up a hill) to the campground: a loose scattering of wooden tent pads on some guy’s property. The owner told me “There is no check in. You just find a site that looks good and settle in.” Cool.
Tumblr media
Of course the only rain I saw on the trip happened as soon as I arrived at a sub-tropical island. I expected to have a nap ASAP, but instead opted for a cold shower and laundry in the sink. I couldn’t fully clean my smelly bike shorts with Camp Suds; I could only make them slightly less smelly.
Tumblr media
Savary is a long, skinny island filled with lush rainforest and edged with white sandy beaches. After a comfortable and pitch black night, I was up at a decent hour. Day 6 was my rest day, which meant biking without all my gear. My legs felt overqualified for the 8km rip across the island and back.
Tumblr media
It was Gavin’s rest day, too.
Tumblr media
After a big brunch scramble and a hot dog, I headed to the beach, which was just as sunny and glorious as I imagined. I took a dip in the ocean, read, ate a bag of chips and a hot dog. When I ran out of food I went back to my camp and made an underwhelming dinner of overcooked veggies and terrible instant mashed potatoes with a hot dog.
Tumblr media
One of the best books I’ve read in a long time. It’s about a girl growing up in a survivalist, ultra conservative, and unsafe family fighting for education, despite never setting foot in a classroom until the age of 17. I left my copy at a community library on Savary. Feel free to go get it. On day 7 I caught the morning water taxi back to Lund, then made one more stop at Nancy's before tackling the 3km uphill. It was overcast and muggy. Sweaty and grimy. The ride to Powell River was quick though, and I treated myself to a Buddha bowl and cold beer for lunch.
Tumblr media
It was another 27km to Saltery Bay...
Tumblr media
... which was an exceptionally beautiful provincial park.
Tumblr media
Of course the campground attendant came to collect fees while I was in the middle of washing myself from a pot.
I felt resourceful that day. Like I belonged out there. It was the little things, like seeing the cycle route sign even though I didn’t see any other cyclists, collecting large rocks to hold my tent down because the ground was too hard for stakes, or improvising a bear hang because the campground didn’t have a bear proof locker for cyclists (get it together, Saltery). Part of me still feels like the kid who spends all her time reading, watching LOTR EE marathons, and making pizza at Panago for $6 an hour. I never grew up thinking of myself as athletic or woodsy, and compared to many people I'm not, but it's about time I realize I can do this on my own. And that I love it.
Tumblr media
Day 8 began with a serene ferry ride to Earl's Cove. Out of the entire trip, I was the most nervous about the upcoming ride from Earl's to Sechelt. I knew it would be windy, narrow, and steep, and I didn’t want to end up schmucked on the side of the 101 because some yahoo hauling a yacht, four kayaks, and a dozen mountain bikes couldn't be bothered to slow down on a blind corner. But at this point I had 500km of experience, a bag of Sour Cherry Blasters, and my screaming pink cycling jersey to get through the day safely. It was relatively quiet early Wednesday morning, and the beautiful ride turned out to be one of my favourite sections.
I took a detour on Redrooffs Road after Half Moon Bay to get off the highway for a bit. It was scenic enough, but the elevation was stupid. I hadn’t walked Gavin up that many hills since Thetis Lake Regional Park. Things started to go downhill from there. Metaphorically of course, as the hills only went up.
Tumblr media
Traffic volume started to increase at Sechelt, where I stopped for candy. The Cherry Blasters picked me right up, but not even a sugar rush can hold off eight days of fatigue indefinitely. The last few kilometers to Gibsons weren't exactly painful, but they were not pleasant. My faith in Google Maps’ elevation estimates might never recover. My bike chain was dry and squeaking, but I thought if I could just make it to my destination and offload my gear I could zip back into town and find a bike shop and get some lubricant. In reality, once I finally arrived at Mike's place, after 83km and over 1400m of elevation gain, I couldn't bring myself to take the hill down into Gibsons again. "Can olive oil work on bike chains" is not my proudest Google search, but weary, smelly, and perpetually damp cyclists are nothing if not humble. And the answer is no, not really, but olive oil is better than nothing.
Tumblr media
Thankfully Persephone Brewing was within walking distance. My healing began with an order of spring rolls and a rye farmhouse ale.
Tumblr media
That evening, as I settled in to my tent, I heard the soft whisper of my couch back at home. The call of the bahn mis at Chickpea that Brian said were amazing. The whinny of my stupidly sensitive horse on Red Dead Redemption 2 Online. The sweet yet powerful purr of Alley Cat, my gentle golden nugget. I was a two hour ride away from completing the biggest physical achievement of my life. A year ago running 5k was a stretch, and biking 11km to Richmond was a chore. I wanted to do an ambitious cycle tour to see if I could. And I can. There’s nothing particularly special about me, or most people, but that doesn’t have to stop us from getting shit done.
Tumblr media
Day 9 was a quick ride down to the ferry, then a hilly ride through West Van on Marine Drive. Once I hit the Lions Gate Bridge, I knew I was home free.
Tumblr media
Coming home after 9 days and 590km of a door-to-door solo cycle tour was incredibly satisfying.
Tumblr media
Almost as satisfying as seeing my number one precious sweet potato again!
Tumblr media
This sweet pup is my number two.
Tumblr media
Maybe one day I’ll do a proper Google Maps route but this is the general idea.
Highlight(s): the views on Salt Spring, Sokka’s beautiful kitten face, the ride up from Nanaimo, the white sandy beaches at Savary, the peaceful ferry ride from Saltery, the surprisingly doable hills after Earl's Cove, the pics of my niece and nephew smiling on their first day back at school, the beers and food at Persephone, the moment I realized that I absolutely crushed every part of my ambitious plan. Lowlight: Thetis Lake Regional Park. Gold star: Gavin. This humble, unassuming, steel frame hybrid has been a true star, solid and dependable. I love this bike. I love what we can do together. Runner up: The weather. Almost perfect. Runner up: My legs. You know what you did.

Chapter 52. Finnish Lapland
Tumblr media
I’m writing this introduction from our flight from London Gatwick. It is 6:14 AM. Cold and rainy. We’ve been up since 4, and even my few hours of sleep were interrupted by relentless coughing. I should feel tired and angry.
But instead I’m bursting with anticipation - like my body can’t handle the excitement (maybe that’s the reason for my cough?).
This is Chelsay and I’s first weekend trip, and as the plane makes its way to the runway, I’m remembering the #1 reason we moved back: accessible travel, starting with this weekend’s trip to the Finnish Lapland.
Our second round of European adventures began with this road trip to Nellim, Finland, an extremely remote town of 150 people tucked 250 miles into the Arctic Circle, just five miles from the Russian border.
However, before writing about our three days in Finland, I want to quickly cover our first three weeks in London.
I could talk about our return to Richmond Park, about our walks through Soho and the reminders of how “cool” London is, or about how we found our flat in Hampstead within 24 hours of arriving... All of that was great, but I really only want to write about one thing: Indy.
Yes, 12 year old Chelsay’s dream finally came true. As a kid, she’d tell her mom she was going to live in London (...she watched a lot of Mary Poppins). She would have a great job and a nice husband. But most importantly: she would have a border collie named Indiana Jones. This dream came true when Chels and I traveled up to Derby, England to visit a puppy litter. All of the puppies had chubby butts, but our little Indy was easy to spot: tail wagging, stomping over his puppy siblings, and already showing affection to his new parents. It was love at first site.
Tumblr media
We won’t get to take little Indy home for a few more weeks, but that hasn’t slowed Chelsay’s “puppy mom” obsession. We bought his crate and fence on the ride home from Derby. We’ve been watching hours of dog training videos on YouTube. I’m receiving dozens of texts each day with the same puppy picture. ...Who am I kidding though? I’m just as much of an obsessed “puppy dad”.
Tumblr media
That one Indy story means you’re caught up on our first three weeks in London. Back to our first trip.
There’s always a buzz when you’re going somewhere new, and that’s especially true in Europe. Every country is so accessible yet so unique. Spain is nothing like Sweden nor Morocco. They’re all just three hours away, but might as well be on different planets.
Tumblr media
This was proven true as our plane descended into Finland. The landscape was whiter than a Dave Mathews concert. Snow everywhere. No patches of civilization, just patches of evergreen forests covered in more white. We took off in metropolitan London and landed literally in the Arctic Circle.
Tumblr media
If this was evident on the flight in, it became especially clear as we left the airport. I asked our rental agent for the car keys and he looked back at me as if it were obvious: “They’re in the car - I started it 30 minutes ago.”
As we stepped out the airport doors, I realized why this should’ve been obvious — and also why his directions to the car were so emphatic. Everything was frozen, including the car had he not started it earlier. Chelsay and I would’ve been frozen too if we didn’t literally dive into the car.
After barely avoiding frostbite, my first thought upon hitting the road was “How can people survive here?” It’s just snow, ice, and sub-zero temperatures for months!
Tumblr media
youtube
But the Finnish rightly play up their winter wonderland. In fact, it’s close enough to the North Pole that Lapland claims to be the Home of Santa. Yes, of all the places in the entire world, Santa chose Rovaniemi, Finland to set up shop. What an honor.
Tumblr media
After a brief stop at Santa’s offices, we hit the road for our four-hour drive to Nellim. This place is remote, and that was exactly the intention. My two goals for the trip were (1) to see the Northern Lights and (2) to walk through snowy, silent Finish forests. Heading as far into Lapland as possible gave us the best chances for both.
The drive was a breeze: we had studded tires for the icy roads, and a James Acaster audiobook for entertainment. Plus the landscape kept us in awe - tall spruce forests lined the roadway and the black concrete was covered in ice, loose snow whipping around in the wind.
youtube
We were conscious of daylight on our drive up. In winter, the sun technically rises at 9:30 AM and sets at 3 PM. I say “technically” because there is actually far more daylight thanks to Nautical and Civil twilight, two things I’d never heard of before this trip. Given Lapland’s latitude, sunrise and sunset last about two hours each — rather than have a defined light time and dark time, Finnish days are just caught in perpetual semi-visibility... In addition to being “Home to Santa”, Lapland is apparently also the Twilight Zone.
Stop it Mike.
Anyway, we arrived at Nellim Wilderness Resort after sunset and nautical twilight and civil twilight and any other twilight. It was dark, but there were still a few activities available our first evening.
First, our resort had an illuminated sled hill. We didn’t know about the sledding beforehand, but once we’d seen it, Chelsay and I couldn’t resist.
Our riding styles were absolutely on brand: Chelsay laughed and screamed the entire way down (reminding me of our ride on The Mummy roller coaster at Universal Studios).
youtube
Meanwhile, I took sledding to an extreme by riding headfirst (likely breaking my ribs with what Chelsay called “The Salmon Jump”), then later trying to surf down (likely breaking my back with what Chelsay called “The Concussion Tumble”).
youtube
youtube
We were in the right country to recover from our (my) frigid falls, because the Finns love a hot sauna. In fact, they invented it! 1000 years ago, some Viking named Olaf probably tried that sled-surf thing, and a smoky sauna was his novel therapy!
Luckily the resort’s saunas were private, because similar to sled-surfing, I introduced a new twist to an old tradition: no one in the history of saunas has ever sweat as much as I did. Olaf included.
Outside of sledding and saunas, the other big nighttime activity in Lapland is searching for the Aurora Borealis. The Northern Lights are fairly common this time of year: about 50/50. The problem was the weather was due to be overcast & snowing throughout, so Chelsay and I came in with zero expectation.
We mentioned this to the receptionist at Nellim, but she wasn’t giving up hope. She said to keep our eyes peeled for stars: if you can see the stars, there’s a break in the clouds and a chance to see the Aurora. It didn’t hurt that our room was 50% window.
Tumblr media
Just as the receptionist predicted, we saw stars from about 10:30 to midnight. Staring out felt like being on a hunt, eyes dashing from one side of the sky to the other in hopes of seeing a green flash. Eventually I fell asleep, but the resort offers an Aurora alarm in case the lights appear.
Unfortunately there were no alarms either night.
I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed - the Northern Lights were one of the main reasons for visiting, and the brief star sightings provided a cruel tease of unwarranted hope. But the Aurora is just weather after all, and as the sun rose the next day, we remembered how cool it was to be in Nellim, Finland. Plus, the flip side of this snowy cloud cover was a clean and white-coated winter wonderland.
The fresh snow was perfect for our first activity of the day: dog sledding. These huskies were dying to get out and run, and I’ll never forget their excited gallop as we burst through the trees onto an open, frozen lake.
youtube
youtube
Chelsay and I switched off as driver, both flirting with danger. Chelsay nearly led us into Russia, while I ghost rode the sled. If you’re not familiar with ghost riding, it’s where you hop out of a moving (now driverless) vehicle and run beside it. Based on the look in our dogs’ eyes, I’m not sure they’d seen this before.
After the morning excitement, Chelsay and I had earned extra whipped cream on our hot chocolates. I’ll briefly mention the dining, which we both surprisingly enjoyed. Finnish food is not traditionally exciting (a lot of lingonberry and reindeer), but the Wilderness Resort came through for each meal: tasty lamb shanks, potatoes gratin, mushroom risotto, panna cotta, and more. And obviously a lot of hot chocolate.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We regained enough energy over lunch for our afternoon activity: snow shoeing. We planned to be out for a few hours, so bundled up in three layers of everything: socks, leggings, sweaters. We even doubled up on gloves.
Now insulated from the sub zero temperatures, we were motoring around the quiet, empty wilderness in no time. Nothing but clean snow and creaky timber for miles. Chelsay said it reminded her of the land of swirly twirly gumdrops from Elf: “Byeee Buddyyyy”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We climbed up hills, slid down slopes, trekked across frozen lakes, forged our own paths through the deep snow, and tracked the only other footprints we could find: wolf and reindeer.
youtube
Tumblr media
Just as the sun was setting (at 3 PM), Chelsay and I stumbled into a peaceful and perfect grove. It was a beautiful setting and the most memorable moments I’ll take from the trip.
Tumblr media
The evergreen branches were coated in snowy white clumps, the crisp air was cold in our chests, and the only sound we could hear was crunch... crunch... crunch... as we gently shuffled across the deep snow.
Tumblr media
We returned to our room with that “exhausted but content” feeling. Our quads were burning but we’d accomplished what we came for.
That night, we enjoyed another remedial sauna - this one was somehow sweatier than the last. We didn’t have any energy or unbroken bones left for sledding that night, so we instead stayed in our room and watched Parasite (great movie) while sipping hot chocolate. I doubt I’ll remember what JOMO meant when I read this in 20 years, but this night describes it well.
We were making the long drive back to Rovaniemi around lunch the next day, but had plenty of time for morning walk. This time we attempted to go without snow shoes, but quickly realized that walking through deep snow is hard! Your feet sink with every step, and you have to contort your legs up & out of the snow to make any progress.
youtube
Chelsay compared it to the Sahara, except instead of sinking ankle-deep in sand, we were literally waist-deep. Luckily we persevered long enough to stumble across a pack of reindeer.
Tumblr media
With our quads burning, we figured the reindeer sighting was a good enough cap to our Lapland adventure. Sure, I wish we’d seen the Northern Lights, but Chelsay and I are still very content with our first trip back in Europe.
I say that without any doubt. Rewinding to our flight from London: Lapland’s frozen landscapes exceeded the “new city” excitement I felt as our departing plane rolled toward the runway.
Lapland is a different planet: part winter wonderland, part uninhabitable wasteland. Its frigid wilderness is unlike any of the previous places we’ve visited, but the craziest part is that it was all so easily accessible. Chelsay and I were 250 miles into the Arctic Circle, literally a short walk into Russia’s northernmost territories, yet remained just a three hour flight from London.
That’s why we moved back: because every trip Chelsay and I take has the potential to bring us somewhere new, special, and completely different from anywhere we’ve ever been.
I can’t wait for our next departing plane to roll its way to the runway.

5 New Standout Hotels in American College Towns
When the real estate developer (and former Starwood Hotels & Resorts executive) Paul McGowan was touring colleges with his daughter, he couldn’t find decent accommodations near the schools they visited. So he launched Study Hotels in 2008, with The Study at Yale. A modernist tower in Philadelphia followed, and The Study at University of Chicago is due in 2021.
He’d found a void in the market: plenty of college towns offer little more than a weathered chain hotel, with a floral comforter and a microwave, if you’re lucky. With Study Hotels, Mr. McGowan took aim at college-town visitors who long for something chicer.
Others took notice, too. Graduate Hotels debuted in 2014 in a renovated foundry near the University of Georgia’s campus in Athens; now there are 19 Graduates, from Bloomington to Berkeley, each waving a collegiate pennant in its design. (See the collection of Arthur Ashe-style sunglasses in Richmond, Va., and the corncob trophy in Lincoln, Neb.) Each offers a kind of cool kitsch.
While big brands like Hilton, Marriott and Nobu are starting to notice the vibrant culture of college towns, the independents — like The Inn at Hastings Park, a five-year-old Relais & Châteaux property some 15 miles from Boston that offers a cookbook course at Radcliffe’s Schlesinger Library — are paving the way. Here are five prospects.
Near the Rhode Island School of Design and Johnson & Wales University, this 1922 landmark (formerly the Biltmore Providence) has been transformed into a bustling local hub, incorporating old and new, with an ornate ballroom, yoga on the terrace and a doughnut festival. (Fact: The Providence-Warwick area has more doughnut shops per capita than any other city in the country.)
There’s an enormous portrait of André Leon Talley (above), the fashion arbiter who has a masters from nearby Brown University, in the lobby. The kaleidoscope of color carries through to the 294 bedrooms, with red leather headboards, tufted green velvet chairs, plaid throws and desk blotters with zebra-skin trim. Some suites have sleeper sofas to accommodate the whole family, which obviously includes dogs.
Graduate Providence; from about $159; 11 Dorrance St., Providence, R.I.
The Study at University City
There’s a giant pair of reading glasses — the logo of Study Hotels — marking this hotel’s location at the crossroads between Drexel University and the University of Pennsylvania. The hotel takes books pretty seriously: the common space, called the Living Room, and the 212 spare and airy rooms are stocked with volumes from New York City’s Strand bookstore.
Room rates include standards like Wi-Fi but other unexpected features, too: bottled water, access to events like gallery openings, and postcards at the Living Room’s writing desk (The Study will also stick on a stamp and mail it). Another perk: Guests staying during college move-in weekends can ship boxes to the hotel in advance and store them until one’s dorm room is ready.
The Study at University City; from about $270; 20 S. 33rd St., Philadelphia, Penn.
One of eight locations in the boutique-hotel-in-a-contemporary-art-museum concept, this address has historic architectural credentials, as well. The original Hill Building, an Art Deco skyscraper completed in 1937, was designed by Shreve, Lamb & Harmon, better known for having designed the Empire State Building. (In the basement, cocktails are served against a backdrop of shiny metal safe deposit boxes in The Vault, a holdover from its days as a bank.)
Less than a 10-minute drive from Duke University, the hotel collaborates with the school on social and charity events and draws a fairly international crowd. It’s primarily a museum, free and open to the public, with revolving shows (“Wim Botha: Still Life with Discontent” runs through December), a permanent collection and more than 10,500 square feet of exhibition space. Original work also hangs in the 125 minimalist rooms, which were designed by Deborah Berke Partners and are stocked with Nespresso machines and Malin+Goetz toiletries. Pack a mat for “Yoga With Art” sessions among the sculptures, paintings and photographs on weekends.
21c Museum Hotel Durham; from about $189; 111 Corcoran St., Durham, N.C.
The Clement Hotel
The Clement is an all-inclusive urban resort in Silicon Valley that strives for a residential atmosphere. The room rate includes all food and beverage (even booze), valet parking, internet access, everything in the minibar (stocked with guest preferences in advance) and a service charge (5 percent of the room rate, 100 percent of which is distributed to the staff) so you don’t have to tip.
The 21 one-bedroom suites — and two single rooms that can be combined for a two-bedroom suite — are homey deluxe: striated-stone, heated-floor bathrooms are vast enough for a tub, a shower and a Toto toilet that does everything but tie your shoes.
There are barbecues by the rooftop pool, which overlooks the Stanford University campus, on summer weekends and whenever Stanford football has a home game.
The Clement Hotel; from about $600; 711 El Camino Real, Palo Alto, Calif.
Austin Motel
The quirkiest in the class, this motel — in operation since 1938 — reinvented itself in 2017. A carport lit by rainbow neon complements its distinctive sign, and the deep kidney-bean shaped pool is a portal to a bygone era — long before hip meant Brooklyn.
Guest rooms are decorated with groovy Voutsa wallpaper, push-button phones and Tivoli alarm clocks. The vibe is retro without being gimmicky, which is something the Texas design and developing company Bunkhouse has made its trademark. (See also Hotel San José, a sister property and reimagined motor court in nearby South Congress, one of Austin’s trendy neighborhoods.)
The gift shop sells cheeky Americana (plus beer and snacks), and the restaurant Joann’s Fine Food is a souped-up diner where locals and students — University of Texas and St. Edward’s University are both nearby — fill the turquoise booths and rub elbows at the bright red counter.
Austin Motel; from about $125; 1220 S Congress Ave, Austin, Tex.

WILMINGTON | 4 dead as Hurricane Florence drenches the Carolinas
New Post has been published on https://www.stl.news/wilmington-4-dead-as-hurricane-florence-drenches-the-carolinas/170331/
WILMINGTON | 4 dead as Hurricane Florence drenches the Carolinas
WILMINGTON, N.C.  — Blowing ashore with howling 90 mph winds, Hurricane Florence splintered buildings, trapped hundreds of people and swamped entire communities along the Carolina coast Friday in what could be just the opening act in a watery, two-part, slow-motion disaster. At least four people were killed.
Forecasters warned that drenching rains of 1 to 3½ feet as the storm crawls westward across North and South Carolina could trigger epic flooding well inland over the next few days.
As 400-mile-wide Florence pounded away at the coast with torrential downpours and surging seas, rescue crews used boats to reach more than 360 people besieged by rising waters in New Bern, while many of their neighbors awaited help. More than 60 people had to be rescued in another town as a cinderblock motel collapsed at the height of the storm’s fury.
Florence flattened trees, crumbled roads and knocked out power to more than three-quarters of a million homes and businesses, and the assault wasn’t anywhere close to being over, with the siege in the Carolinas expected to last all weekend.
“It’s an uninvited brute who doesn’t want to leave,” said North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper.
The hurricane was “wreaking havoc” and could wipe out entire communities as it makes its “violent grind across our state for days,” the governor said. He said parts of North Carolina had seen storm surges — the bulge of seawater pushed ashore by the hurricane — as high as 10 feet.
A mother and baby were killed when a tree fell on a house, according to a tweet from Wilmington police. Also, a 77-year-old man was apparently knocked down by the wind and died after going out to check on his hunting dogs, Lenoir County authorities said, and the governor’s office said a man was electrocuted while trying to connect extension cords in the rain.
Shaken after seeing waves crashing on the Neuse River just outside his house in New Bern, restaurant owner and hurricane veteran Tom Ballance wished he had evacuated.
“I feel like the dumbest human being who ever walked the face of the earth,” he said.
After reaching a terrifying Category 4 peak of 140 mph earlier in the week, Florence made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane at 7:15 a.m. at Wrightsville Beach, a few miles east of Wilmington and not far from the South Carolina line. It came ashore along a mostly boarded-up, emptied-out stretch of coastline.
By Friday evening, Florence was downgraded to a tropical storm, its winds weakening to 70 mph as it pushed inland. But it was clear that this was really about the water, not the wind.
Florence’s forward movement during the day slowed to a near-standstill — sometimes it was going no faster than a human can walk — and that enabled it to pile on the rain. The town of Oriental, North Carolina, got more than 20 inches just a few hours into the deluge.
Other communities got well over a foot.
The flooding soon spread into South Carolina, swamping places like North Myrtle Beach, in a resort area known for its white sands and multitude of golf courses.
For people living inland in the Carolinas, the moment of maximum peril from flash flooding could arrive days later, because it takes time for rainwater to drain into rivers and for those streams to crest.
Preparing for the worst, about 9,700 National Guard troops and civilians were deployed with high-water vehicles, helicopters and boats.
Authorities warned, too, of the threat of mudslides and the risk of an environmental disaster from floodwaters washing over industrial waste sites and hog farms.
Florence was seen as a major test for the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which was heavily criticized as slow and unprepared last year for Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, where the death toll was put at nearly 3,000.
The National Hurricane Center said Florence will eventually break up over the southern Appalachians and make a right hook to the northeast, its rainy remnants moving into the mid-Atlantic states and New England by the middle of next week.
Meteorologist Ryan Maue of weathermodels.com said Florence could dump a staggering 18 trillion gallons of rain over a week on North Carolina, South Carolinas, Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky and Maryland. That’s enough to fill the Chesapeake Bay or cover the entire state of Texas with nearly 4 inches (10 centimeters) of water, he calculated.
North Carolina alone is forecast to get 9.6 trillion gallons, enough to cover the Tar Heel state to a depth of about 10 inches (25 centimeters).
On Friday, coastal streets in the Carolinas flowed with frothy ocean water, and pieces of torn-apart buildings flew through the air. The few cars out on a main street in Wilmington had to swerve to avoid fallen trees, metal debris and power lines.
A wind gust at the Wilmington airport was clocked at 105 mph (169 kph), the highest since Hurricane Helene in 1958. Nationwide, airlines canceled more than 2,400 flights through Sunday.
In Jacksonville, North Carolina, next to Camp Lejeune, firefighters and police fought wind and rain as they went door-to-door to pull dozens of people out of the Triangle Motor Inn after the structure began to crumble and the roof started to collapse.
In New Bern, population 29,000, flooding on the Neuse River left 500 people in peril.
“WE ARE COMING TO GET YOU,” the city tweeted around 2 a.m. “You may need to move up to the second story, or to your attic, but
WE ARE COMING TO GET YOU.”
Boat teams including volunteers rescued some 360 residents, including Sadie Marie Holt, 67, who first tried to row out of her neighborhood during Florence’s assault.
“The wind was so hard, the waters were so hard, that trying to get out we got thrown into trailers. We got thrown into mailboxes, houses, trees,” said Holt, who had stayed at home because of a doctor’s appointment that was later canceled. She retreated and was eventually rescued by a boat crew; 140 more awaited assistance.
Ashley Warren and boyfriend Chris Smith managed to paddle away from their home in a boat with their two dogs, and the experience left her shaken.
“Honestly, I grew up in Wilmington. I love hurricanes. But this one has been an experience for me,” she said. “We might leave.” ___

Fried pickles and populism: a diner tour of Trump Country
Story Hinckley, CS Monitor, April 28, 2017
At the popular local eateries the Monitor visited, the fare ranged from smoky brisket and “frickles” (fried pickles) to fresh blueberry muffins and raspberry hot chocolate. The political views were not quite so varied, however. In some places, as many as 9 in 10 voters had supported Mr. Trump. Most of them remain enthusiastic about Trump because of his support of coal and conservative values that resonate in this predominantly Christian region.
Wilma’s in Paintsville, Ky. By 7:30 a.m. Saturday morning, Wilma Eldridge has already made 27 pies. To be specific, 14 chocolate, six coconut, and seven apple pies.
She has owned Wilma’s Restaurant off of Paintsville’s Main Street for 54 years. “It’s regular home cooking,” says Ms. Eldridge, in her small wood-paneled dining area. “I’m known for my pies.” Making the crusts from scratch makes all the difference, she explains.
Paintsville is part of Johnson County, where 84 percent of residents voted for President Trump. A lot of the support was due to “religious reasons,” says Eldridge, who adds that people in Paintsville are strongly against abortion and want God to be a part of public education.
“‘In God We Trust’ needs to be back in our schools,” says Eldridge, who had one customer who would pray every day for Trump to get elected. “They would have taken God out of everything if Hillary had been able to appoint the Supreme Court justice.”
Money is tighter than she has ever seen it in the five decades she has owned a restaurant. Eldridge used to have three employees working at her restaurant at any one time, but now she is the only one on duty most days. She started setting up a breakfast buffet on the weekends so customers could serve themselves while she doubles as both a waitress and owner.
Paintsville locals voted for Trump because they need jobs, says Eldridge. And so far, locals feel like Trump has lived up to his word. Kathy, a woman dining with her mother Martha, says she has seen more coal trucks running through the town since the election.
After President Obama put restrictions on coal production, Kentucky’s unemployment rate spiked to double digits. “Whenever you take coal out of eastern Kentucky, we have nothing,” says Eldridge, to a nodding agreement from Kathy and Martha. Today the unemployment rate in Kentucky has fallen back down to five percent.
By 10:30 AM, Wilma’s grandson only has one of his grandmother’s pies left at his farmstand.
Fava’s in Georgetown, Ky. The busiest day at Fava’s is Saturday, says cook Chris Caudill, when locals line up to order bowls piled high with “frickles” (fried pickles) and hot browns, an open sandwich of Texas toast smothered in cheese, deli meat, tomatoes, and bacon.
Fava’s also has a steady flow of daily customers who keep their own mugs and plates in the back of the restaurant. “They come in every morning, and eat off the same plate and drink out of the same cup,” says Mr. Caudill. “One regular gets poached eggs, another gets two eggs with a side of biscuits. You know when they walk in the door what they get.”
Fava’s has great customer loyalty, says Alden Gruchow, a third-generation employee at the restaurant, but other small businesses in Georgetown aren’t as lucky. “There is a building right across the street, and over the last 10 years they have probably had three to four different businesses and they close within a year or two,” he says. “I feel like it’s harder for people to open a business and sustain success.”
Gruchow and Caudill say that’s one of the reasons they both voted for Trump. “I feel like he wants people to start their own businesses and [give] tax breaks for small businesses,” says Gruchow. “That’s a big thing for me, having the restaurant in our family.”
And three months into his presidency, they feel Trump is trying his best to revive local economies in Appalachia--even if that means budget cuts to major funding sources like the Appalachian Regional Commission.
“I think he’s trying to find ways to save money right now and he just doesn’t know how,” says Gruchow. “I think he didn’t realize how hard it was going to be.”
The Wild Bean in Lewisburg, W. Va. Wild Bean’s chef Chris Hinkle makes two dozen blueberry muffins a day. “If we don’t have ‘em, people freak out in the morning,” says Mr. Hinkle, who grew up in Lewisburg.
Washington Street offers a reprieve from the fast food chains and strip malls alongside Interstate 64. The sidewalks on either side of the 2-lane street are lined with a couple local restaurants, a post office, and a few galleries. The Greenbrier, a local five-star resort, has long drawn visitors from outside West Virginia, but the town saw a significant bump in tourism after it won Budget Travel’s award of “Coolest Small Town” in 2011.
Despite these distinctions, Lewisburg’s resources--like those of the state--are still abused by outsiders, says Hinkle.
“West Virginia has always been kind of [dumped] on. People just want what we have and then they run off after they trash our land,” he says. “And that happens a lot.” The coal companies are a big example, he explains, but a smaller example is tourists coming to the Greenbrier river trail and leaving tons of garbage on the river bank.
Hinkle, who identifies as a Democrat, thinks West Virginia will be further degraded under the president. Rollback of Clean Water Act protections and coal mine regulations “scare me,” he says. Still, Lewisburg saw a lot of pro-Trump support before and after the election.
“I think Obama did a pretty fair job. He was diplomatic and professional and all that but things didn’t really improve a lot,” says Colby Taylor, a customer at the Wild Bean. He hopes Trump can turn things around, specifically when it comes to health care.
After caddying at the Greenbrier’s golf course for employees of big insurance companies, he looks at the industry a bit differently. “Watching them party all that money away and drink the $500 bottles of wine, [and] they’re playing golf ... makes me say, ‘Hey. They need to clean up the insurance companies,’ “ Mr. Taylor says.
Three months into Trump’s presidency, there are still some “hostile feelings” in town over the election, says Taylor. “I’ve never really seen it as bad as it is now.”
Hinkle agrees. “I don’t really like the guy,” says Hinkle, referring to Trump. “But he is the president now so I try not to fight too much with the people I know.”
Morrison’s Drive Inn in Logan, W. Va. Loletta Evans has worked for 34 years at Morrison’s Drive Inn, where locals pull up in their pick-up trucks and sedans and waitresses come out to take their orders.
Ms. Evans says the restaurant used to get big orders of their famous hot dogs with steamed buns on Thursdays and Fridays for company meetings at the coal mines. By specially wrapping the hot dogs in both cellophane and foil, says Ms. Evans, the hot dogs can stay warm for hours.
Business isn’t what it used to be, but Evans says Morrison’s has received more large orders since the election. “It’s slow,” she says, “but it’s coming back.”
Evans says the economy in Logan--where she has lived her entire life--is hard-up, so she knew Hillary Clinton made a “bad mistake” when she said she was going to shut down the coal mines. “[E]ven if she thought it, she shouldn’t have said it,” says Evans. “You don’t just tell people you are going to take their livelihoods.”
Locals lined the streets when John F. Kennedy campaigned in Logan, says Evans. She fondly remembers meeting the president-to-be, even though she has always considered herself a Republican.
But Mrs. Clinton would have been booed if she campaigned in Logan, Evans says, adding that when Clinton sent her husband Bill instead he didn’t get the “big turnout” that politicians normally get here.
Clinton’s remarks fueled support for Trump in the area, says Evans. Today locals feel he is trying to live up to his campaign promises, but that Congress is making it difficult. “They are fighting him tooth and toenail but he is trying. Of course I do pray for him every night. I would like to see him do good and I think his heart is in the right place.”
If the country went “back to God,” there would be less disagreement in Washington, says Evans. “People don’t have any moral standards about them anymore.”
Smitty’s Southern BBQ in Richmond, Ky. By Saturday afternoon, Smitty’s Southern Style BBQ only has enough pulled pork for one more sandwich. They cook the meat in small batches so it stays fresh, but that also means they run out of barbecue sandwiches on busy days.
“I just told my daughter-in-law right here, I think we’re going have to start cooking more for Saturday,” says owner Bonnie Smith. Smitty’s belonged to Ms. Smith’s husband, who passed away four years ago. Now she manages the restaurant with the help of her children, her children’s spouses, and her grandchildren.
Smith, who has lived in Richmond her entire life, voted for Hillary Clinton in November because she felt Trump was “so negative.” Before November, Smith says she heard a lot of talk about the candidates’ gender: “You had [some people] saying they didn’t want a woman for president. They needed a man.”
Regardless of political differences, however, Smith says her favorite thing about Richmond is the people. “[T]here may be a lot of racism or whatever, but they are genuinely nice.”
When the restaurant first opened, Smith and her husband gave customers markers to write messages on a blackboard in front of the register. And without any prompts, “they would always put Scripture,” says Smith. Now Smith and her family call the blackboard “The Wall of Praise.”
According to Pew Research, 76 percent of Kentuckians identify as Christian, and less than 2 percent of the state identifies with a non-Christian faith. And considering that at least 43 percent of adults in Kentucky read Scripture at least once a week, the Wall of Praise’s natural evolution makes sense. Religion is important to Smith, who says it has helped her get through hard times at the restaurant.
“It’s really booming today and I thank God for it, because it can get a little slow in here,” says Smith, gesturing to two full tables of customers. “If I have just one person come in here I thank God for that one person because I know he is going to send more. That’s my philosophy with the kids. The Lord always makes a way.”
Tonya’s Country Kitchen in Marietta, Ohio. Every Tuesday, Joe Kurdz visits Tonya’s Country Kitchen on Front Street for the daily special: baked steak with mashed potatoes and gravy, a dinner roll, and a choice of green beans or corn for $7.95.
Located in the heart of Marietta, Ohio, Tonya’s is two blocks away from the banks of the Ohio River--and West Virginia on the other side. Local restaurants and home accessory stores line the wide streets of Marietta’s downtown.
A city of less than 14,000 people, Marietta is the largest city in Washington County, where Republican support runs deep: more than 68 percent of the county voted for Donald Trump in November. The city was an outpost for pioneers in the 1700s, but it has fallen on hard times. More than 26 percent of Marietta is in poverty, double the national average. Kurdz volunteers at a local food pantry every week and he says the majority of visitors are young families.
“When I was in the workforce, there were a bunch of industries in Marietta. People stayed,” says Kurdz. Now, he adds, many people born in Marietta later leave to find jobs. “But I stuck around Marietta. It’s a good city.”
However, Kurdz says drug addiction in the area is a serious problem. Ohio is ranked fifth in drug overdoses among US states, including an 11 percent increase in deaths between 2014 and 2015. Drug overdoses have witnessed a long-term climb in Washington County: in 1992 there were two drug overdose deaths and in 2015 there were 73.
“It’s gotten real bad,” says Kurdz. “When I was a policeman, the worst I got was a kid sniffing glue.”
After finishing his dinner, Kurdz goes home to let his cat inside the house. He’ll be back to Tonya’s next Tuesday for the baked steak special.
34:Ate in Williamson, W.Va. “Waffle Wednesdays” is big at 34:Ate, say co-owners Robyn Gannon and Debby Young: the weekly special of chicken and waffles.
Despite seeing the economy decline during their lives in Williamson, Ms. Gannon and Ms. Young decided to retire from their jobs as schoolteachers and open a restaurant together three years ago. They tossed around hundreds of name possibilities and eventually they decided on 34:Ate, a play on Psalms 34:8, which reads “O taste and see that the Lord is good…”
The local economy revolves around coal mines, says Gannon, so it inevitably influences local politics--including her own perspective. “I am a Democrat still, but I could not live in this community where coal was just everything, and vote for somebody who just said they were against it,” says Gannon, who voted for Trump in November. “I mean I wouldn’t feel like I could hold my head up in this area.”
But local politics are determined by more than the economy. Christianity is very important to locals in Williamson. “I’d say for the majority of people around here if someone was against abortion they would vote for that person,” says local diner Judy Southard, “no matter what else they thought.”
More than 70 percent of the US identifies as Christian--including 78 percent of West Virginia--but their behavior doesn’t always hew to Christian principles, says Ms. Young.
“What hurts is that Christians don’t always act like Christians. We’re not always the most loving people and sometimes we… can’t see how anyone else could think or feel,” says Young. “But we should still love those who aren’t like us. They have their rights and they have the same needs that we do.”
