Is Syphracius like a jellyfish demon? Do all of them have animal motiffs?

syphracius is an eleth, a type of demon composed entirely of magic, emotional energy and raw soul matter. his design is inspired by rhizophysa filiformis and i wanted him to look sort of aquatic or otherworldly, but he’s not meant to have an animal association the same way luxuria and the aspects are. 

most demons don’t naturally have animal features. some might choose to incorporate them for various reasons. demons who feed on emotion or energy do this most often since shapeshifting is usually a big part of their culture and feeding strategy. some concubi do it to be eye-catching, while others consider it a form of self-expression. some guilt-eaters will retain vaguely animal shapes if they frequently feed on animals, or if they just have some sentimental attachment to those features.

notable exceptions to this are hellhounds and tartarans, who do naturally have animal features and mostly have to work around that. hellhounds can shapeshift with enough practice but they usually just pick a dog breed from the mortal plane since that’s somewhat familiar. tartarans have something else going on and they either choose to hide some of that with a guise or don’t bother.

Congratulations because you've activated our special interest in oceans and the answer is definitely siphonophores! These guys (picture is from wikipedia and the we'll put the labels for it under a cut):

They're a family of animals where each being is compromised of multiple unique and specialized organisms working together.

Each of the pictured animals isn't actually one animal but actually hundreds to thousands of individual animals working together as a unit. While many species are in the sub-centemeter range, there are others that can reach well over 30 feet.

They're fully capable of locomotion and are actually predatory rather then being passive filter feeders like many other colonial animals.

While many are ambush predators who will wait for prey to approach they aren't passive with many species using things like lures as well as bioluminesence to entice prey when its nearby.

Siphonophores are extremely cool animals and we really like them as mascot for systemhood in general because they are multiple individuals who work together and are often seen as a single unit.

this is the rhizophysa filiformis, my absolute favorite siphonophore.

it is around 4 inches when contracted, and can be a couple feet long when stretching its tentacles for catching prey. it has been reported to be around 500m deep in the ocean, and is in the rhizophysidae family! it is currently found in the mediterranean sea, the gulf of mexico, and in the north atlantic ocean.

So - for those who loved my last Rhizophysa post, here's the video of it. However, probably due to some bad lighting and low resolution, it looked rather....visceral. Lovecraftian. You name it.

I'm still sure it looked pretty if you get the cameras right though.

As you can see, the creature got a disproportionately looooooooooooooongggggg colony.

Yes. It's a colony. Not a single organism. A colony. A colony with its own division of work and function.
