Once the RIF app shuts down tomorrow I will probably be done using reddit on my phone forever.

It's so bittersweet to lose such a huge part of the content I consume online, but I'm hoping to replace that mindless scrolling on reddit with mindless scrolling over here on tumblr.

I hope everyone who loses their reddit apps tomorrow is able to find a new space that makes them happy.

Reading is Fun! (damental)

We need to start kids reading early and enthusiastically foster the love of it by modeling a reading culture. Doesn't matter if it's a paper or electronic book; what matters most is the unfettered access to reading material...

I started reading so early that I have no functional memory of life without it. My family was poor but we had full bookshelves and both my mom and gran [who we lived with] were voracious readers. Mom read to me and had books for me from the very beginning, and I took to reading easily and with much excitement. RIF has been so much of my life.

"I AM BEGGING ALL OF YOU!!! PLEASE STOP FIGHTING! THERE'S NO NEED FOR VIOLENCE!"

Smiley was yelling at them to stop, but of course—it never worked.

Monster: "DO YOU REALLY THINK THAT LITTLE KNIFE OF YOURS CAN HURT US!?"

She laughed along with her two friends.

"Go ahead then! If you think you're so tough! Do it! Just like all you humans thinking you're such smartass nerds!"

They were now surrounding Robin and Smiley.

Robin: "I'm not that good at fighting... but if you're hurting me and my friend here, then I’ll fight back!"

The leader of the group threw a punch at Robin, but Smiley quickly pulled him away and shoved them back a bit.

Smiley: "Please don’t do this! It's not worth it—he’s just a human!"

Monster: "HUMANS ARE JUST FOOD WITH NAMES! They're worthless compared to us with magic! HEY! GET THAT SHORT GUY AWAY FROM THE HUMAN!"

Smiley: "I'M NOT SHORT! I'M JUST... NOT AS TALL AS YOU GUYS!!!" (← He's like 130 cm.)

Two of them grabbed Smiley and lifted him up so he couldn’t help Robin anymore.

Two of them: "FINISH HIM, BOSS! KILL THIS HUMAN—MAKE HIM OUR FIRST MASTERPIECE AS THE ‘HUMAN HUNTERS, SECOND GENERATION!’"

Robin: "Uh—so you guys saw the first generation and thought, ‘Yeah, we can be just like them’? Are you all seriously chuunibyou or something?"

All of the monsters—including Smiley—froze in confusion.

They didn’t know what “chuunibyou” meant... but it sure sounded cool.

Monster: "Chuni... what!?"

While they were distracted, Robin slashed the leader in the stomach. Smiley managed to break free from their grasp.

Monster Leader: "THAT’S NOT FAIR!"

She screamed in pain, clutching her stomach.

Robin: "Oh, so you can feel pain, huh?"

He said it like he’d just made a discovery—that monsters weren’t invincible.

One of Them: "DID YOU JUST HURT OUR LEADER!?"

The leader covered her wound. Suddenly, some power lifted Robin by the neck. Another monster rushed to check on her, allowing Smiley to punch the one holding Robin and grab him away.

Smiley: "That’s enough! He’s not here to fight!"

Monster: "OH REALLY!? He’s still one of those humans who planned to genocide us all!"

Smiley: "THAT WAS TWO HUNDRED YEARS AGO!"

Robin: "IT’S NOT LIKE I WAS ONE OF THEM! DO I EVEN KNOW WHO YOU ARE!? NO! DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM!? ALSO NO! ARE YOU GUYS FUCKING CRAZY!?"

One monster snatched Robin’s knife away. The leader grabbed him again by the neck, ready to snap it. Robin kicked her in the mouth, making her bleed and drop him. Smiley caught him midair with a tentacle to keep him safe.

Smiley: "ROBIN, STOP ALREADY! YOU'RE JUST MAKING IT WORSE!"

Robin: "I CAN'T JUST STAY STILL AND LET THEM KILL ME! I JUST RAN AWAY FROM HOME—LET ME LIVE MY NEW LIFE!"

Monster: "Ooooh~ a runaway kid, huh~? What happened, punk? Got family issues? Boo-freakin’-hoo~"

*Robin went silent. That comment hit deep.

He never asked to be orphaned.

He never asked to be mentally broken.

He never asked to get lost in this damn forest.

And that bitch… just made him snap.*

He struggled in Smiley’s grasp as rage took over.

Robin: "ALL OF YOU ARE NO BETTER THAN ME, YOU PIECES OF SHIT! YOU DIDN’T HAVE GOOD PARENTS EITHER, DID YOU!?"

Smiley: "STOP! PLEASE! YOU'RE JUST MAKING THINGS WORSE!"

???: "HEY! STOP BEING SO DAMN LOUD! THIS IS A MARKETPLACE, YOU KNOW!?"

The sharp voice of an old woman rang out, scolding them.

Monster Leader: "Damn it, mom!!! I was just about to eat a human!"

Old Woman: "YOU IDIOT! Nobody does that anymore! It’s been TEN YEARS! You wanna start the human-monster war again!? You’re a grown-ass woman—get a grip! And you dragged your friends into this mess too!?"

The old woman argued with the leader until the gang finally gave up and left, grumbling.

Old Woman: "I apologize for Ruby and her friends… We didn’t mean to hurt you, dear. They’re just… childish and stubborn. Please forgive them."

Robin: "...Alright."

Smiley: "Thanks for stopping them! We really appreciate it! (^‿^)"

Old Woman: "Oh, uh... You’re a human lost in this place, right? Have you eaten anything yet, dear? Want to eat at my house? I cook delicious food!"

Robin: "...No, not really."

Smiley: "Ayyyy Robin~ Just give it a try! She’s not gonna poison you!"

Robin: "Fine... I’ll try.

They’re now at the old woman’s house...

an old woman: Do yourselves like home!

another old woman: Woah, Poppy! Where did you get this human from?

Poppy: Oh Bell! I saw him fighting with Ruby…

Bell: Ruby got in a fight again!? So where did this kid come from?

Robin: I… got lost here.

Bell: Awwwwwww, a new human child? Do you have a name?

Smiley: His name is Robin! ✨

Poppy: What a cute name~ How did you get lost in the forest, dear?

Poppy looked at Robin with curiosity… but behind that smile, something felt oddly observant.

Smiley: So he—

Robin suddenly covers Smiley’s mouth, eyes narrow.

Robin: I don’t want to talk about it… sorry.

Smiley (muffled): Just tell them! There’s nothing wrong with i—

Robin (whispers harshly): I want to trust more than this… then I’ll tell them.

Bell: Alrighty~ So what do you wanna eat?

Robin: Up to you^^ I’m not picky… as long as you make it, I won’t judge.

Smiley: Just like David…

Poppy: Speaking of that guy… I raised him once. Then one day, poof—gone. Never said goodbye, never told me where he went…

Robin: He insulted me this morning…

Bell: Oh, poor little one… he’s just got that sharp-tongue personality. Don’t mind it too much, okay?

She gently rubs Robin’s back with a smile. Let’s wait for food and chat after, hmm?

Smiley: Oki! ^^

After waiting for the food… everyone sat down and began eating together.

Robin: Um… may I ask for something?

Bell: Of course, dear. What is it?

Robin: …Would you teach me magic, please?

Smiley nearly chokes on his food.

Smiley: W-w-WHAT!? I mean—it’s not impossible, but it’s crazy hard! You don’t have to go that far!

Robin: But you see… Ruby tried to kill me. Not every monster here is friendly… So, I just want to learn to protect myself. That’s all. Could you… teach me?

Bell: It’s… hard, dear. Humans aren’t born with magic. They have to study from ancient texts and—

Poppy: David has that book! The original owner’s already dead anyway.

Bell: True… but I don’t think David would teach Robin that easily…

Robin (snaps): THAT GUY who insulted me this morning has the book!?!

Smiley: If you talk to him nicely, maybe he’ll help you…

Just then, someone bursts through the door.

David: Hey mamaaa~ What’re ya cooking again? Why didn’t you invite me—oh. It’s you again, human.

Robin: Yeah. Me again…

David: Wait—did you guys gossip about me to him!?

Bell: Nooooo not at all! This kid just got lost and now wants to become a wizard!

David & Robin (at the same time): So you're / I’m asking if I can do that…?

The room goes awkwardly silent at the perfect sync.

Smiley: So… are you going to teach him?

David: Hehe—NOPE. He can’t do it. Trust me.

Robin: I haven’t tried yet—

David: Just by looking at this dumbass, I already sense the disappointment. He’s just a powerless human! You think he can start from scratch?

Robin: Pretty please~

David: If you're gonna use magic for revenge on Ruby, no deal. You’ll just make shit worse. I’m not cleaning up your mess.

Robin: It’s for self-defense… I won’t kill anyone, sir.

David: Oh so now you act nice, huh…?

Bell: But I just saw you shoot down a tree with one magic energy bla—

David quickly slaps a hand over Bell’s mouth.

David (whispers): Don’t say that! I don’t wanna babysit this whiny bitch!

Robin: …I heard that.

Poppy: There’s no need to be rude, David.

David: WHAT IF HE USES IT TO KILL US, HUH!?

Smiley: He already told you—he won’t! Why do you have so many trust issues!?

David suddenly goes silent. His playful tone vanishes. His eyes… distant. Heavy. Like he’s stuck inside a memory.

Smiley: You look strange…

David: …I’m just standing and thinking. Is that weird to you?

Smiley: Your eyes are—

David: FUCK OFF.

He storms out. Smiley almost runs after him, questions spilling from his thoughts, but holds himself back. Even Robin looks like he wanted to ask something… but doesn’t.

Smiley (softly): …Weird. He’s never been like this before.
