GUARDIANS -- George Valera, OF (No. 2/MLB No. 32): Valera drew the start for the AL in left field and quickly made a nice ranging play in the bottom of the first to rob Robert Hassell III of extra bases. That proved to be his only highlight, as he went 0-for-2 with a strikeout and a groundout. Jhonkensy Noel, 3B/OF (No. 13): Noel replaced Valera in left in the fourth and grounded out softly to short in his only at-bat, stranding runners on first and second with two outs in the top of the fifth.

5 Steals of the 2020 MLB Draft - Top Bats
You're reading a smashing good baseball bat review post from Batsmash.com.
Tumblr media
Robert Hassell III, selected 8 overall by the San Diego Padres | Source: MLB.com
2020 was certainly an interesting year for the MLB draft to take place. While scouts had a few months in spring to study top prospects, they also had to rely on earlier player performances from seasons prior, once the COVID-19 virus hit the world.
In addition to that, it was announced in May that the draft will be reduced from 40 rounds to just 5. While boosting opportunity for some it was a big damper on the big league hopes of young stars nationwide.
With all of that being said, the show must go on. The draft went off without a hitch, and we are here to look at which teams were able to draft prospects that may have flown under the radar, but will soon be on our televisions playing in big league games.
Looking at it from a distance, this year’s draft may seem by-the-numbers, especially with top prospect Spencer Torkelson unsurprisingly going #1 to the Detroit Tigers.
Top 5 Notable Value Picks [a 2020 MLB Draft Review]
Here are five teams that got away with a steal, as well as one bonus team who took home the surprise of the MLB draft, according to us here at Batsmash.com!
Tyler Soderstrom – Pick 26 (Athletics)
Tumblr media
Catcher | Turlock High School
Tyler Soderstrom is a standout player from the Central Valley of California – playing ball at Turlock High School. As one of a handful of high school players that were selected in the first round of this year’s draft, Soderstrom stands out among the pack.
While he is drafted to be a catcher, his athleticism has allowed him to play in the outfield and even 3rd base. He also is noted for his advanced bat skill with big pop when he makes contact.
Soderstrom has committed to playing college ball at UCLA, one of the premiere baseball programs in the NCAA. This should only help improve his already impressive skill set.
Bryce Jarvis – Pick 18 (Diamondbacks)
Tumblr media
RHP | Duke
Bryce James was a solid pick for the Diamondbacks because of his newly improved fastball (runs from 92-96 mph deep into starts) as well as his 4-pitch arsenal which is sure to keep opposing batters guessing.
Recommended read: Composite vs. Aluminum Bats
Just last year he was said to have put on 20 pounds of weight, adding velocity to his already dangerous fastball. While the spring was cut short, he showed great ability and improved control as he continued to improve his craft.
Austin Martin – Pick 5 (Blue Jays)
Tumblr media
OF/3B | Vanderbilt
It was a bit of a surprise that Martin was selected at 5 in the draft, as most draft boards had him being selected in the top 3, and for good reason. He has been called the best “pure hitter” in the draft, utilizing a lightning-fast swing that usually leads to hard contact.
Next, he is confident at the plate and is great at controlling the strike zone and using the entire field when collecting hits. With his advanced speed and experience excelling at many positions, the Blue Jays should be more than satisfied with their first-round pick.
Garrett Mitchell – Pick 20 (Brewers)
Tumblr media
OF | UCLA
The Brewers were lucky to have Garrett Mitchell still on the board at pick 20, and wasted no time selecting their guy. With an inconsistent swing coming out of high school, Mitchell spent his time at UCLA perfecting it and hitting consistently in 2019 and 2020.
At 6’3” tall and sporting a strong frame, he has shown he is capable of huge power at the plate. He is also extremely fast and covers a lot of ground, making center field a logical landing spot. Mitchell is an especially inspiring player because he is a type 1 diabetic, but he has shown time and time again that this diagnosis does not hinder his game-changing talent and grit.
Jared Kelley – Pick 47 (White Sox)
RHP | Refugio High School
Jared Kelley is another high school prospect that made our list. He entered 2020 as the top high school prospect in the nation according to a large number of scouts. Kelley has a fastball that can reach speeds up to 98 mph, while also using an advanced change-up with fade and sink to keep hitters off-balance.
Looking for a baseball bat? We put the hard work in and found the best BBCOR bats here!
Before the draft, Kelley was projected to be chosen in the mid-1st round, but he fell into the 2nd round. The White Sox could not pass up the opportunity to pick a pitcher that they have said they view as a future top-of-rotation player.
Biggest Surprise 2020 MLB Draft: Heston Kjerstad – Pick 2 (Orioles)
Tumblr media
OF | Arkansas
Kjerstad was an unlikely choice for the Orioles at the number 2 position in the draft, with many experts thinking he would be chosen later in the top 10. However, when looking more closely at his time at Arkansas, you can see why Baltimore fell in love with him.
In his Freshman year, Kjerstad broke Arkansas’ Freshman home run record with 14 and followed that up with 17 home runs in his Sophomore season. While his 2020 Junior season was cut short by the pandemic, he was putting up his best numbers yet.
The possible downsides to his game are his strikeout numbers due to being aggressive at the plate, as well as average speed for his position. Time will tell if the Orioles surprise number 2 pick will pay off, but there is certainly compelling evidence he will be a formidable pro for years to come.
Thank you for reading our MLB 2020 Draft review – if you enjoyed, please share on social media. Who was your favorite steal of this year’s draft?

MLB Draft tracker 2020: Live results, complete picks list for Rounds 1-5 in baseball draft
The Show must go on.
Not a single inning of professional baseball has yet to be played in 2020, and who knows when first pitch for the 2020 season might come. That doesn’t mean, though, that the 2020 MLB Draft is on hold.
This year’s draft was originally set to undergo some serious changes, the primary change heading from MLB Network Studios in Secaucus, N.J. to Omaha, Neb., just a few days before the start of the College World Series.
MORE MLB DRAFT 2020: Mock draft | Slot values | Pool money by team
Unfortunately, the coronavirus pandemic drastically altered plans for the 2020 and 2021 drafts. This year, the amount of rounds in the draft have been slashed from 40 to just five, with next year’s installment featuring just 20 rounds total. Between the coronavirus and the hacking of some minor league teams,
This year, Arizona State’s Spencer Torkelson is expected to go No. 1 overall to the Tigers, with Vanderbilt’s Austin Martin and Texas A&M’s Asa Lacy expected to round out the top three.
Sporting News will be tracking every pick from Wednesday night’s draft below. Follow below for up-to-the-minute updates and more from the 2020 MLB Draft.

Characters in the movie: “Jobs”
Jobs is a 2013 American biographical drama film based on the life of Steve Jobs, from 1974 while a student at Reed College to the introduction of the iPod in 2001. It is directed by Joshua Michael Stern, written by Matt Whiteley, and produced by Stern and Mark Hulme. Steve Jobs is portrayed by Ashton Kutcher, with Josh Gad as Apple Computer's co-founder Steve Wozniak. Jobs was chosen to close the 2013 Sundance Film Festival.
Who’s Who in the film?
Apple Ashton Kutcher as Steve Jobs:  Steven Paul Jobs is widely recognized as a pioneer of the microcomputer revolution of the 1970s and 1980s, along with Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak. Jobs was born in San Francisco, California and put up for adoption. He was raised in the San Francisco Bay Area.
JOBS WAS AWARDED OVER 450 PATENTS AS HE REVOLUTIONIZED SIX MAJOR INDUSTRIES
Steve Jobs’ ability to visualize, conceptualize and deliver path breaking products through his team and companies took the world aback and made everyone take notice. During his lifetime of work as a creative entrepreneur he focused on the “look and feel“ of his products and aspired for perfection in design. He was awarded close to 450 patents ranging from computers, touch based interfaces, keyboards, portables to staircases, clasps and sleeves. Along the way he revolutionized six industries: personal computers, animated movies, music, phones, tablet computing and digital publishing.
Read more about Steve Jobs: https://learnodo-newtonic.com/steve-jobs-achievements
Josh Gad as Steve Wozniak:  Stephen Gary "Woz" Wozniak is an American inventor, electronics engineer, programmer, philanthropist, and technology entrepreneur. In 1976 he co-founded Apple Inc., which later became the world's largest information technology company by revenue and largest company in the world by market capitalization. He and Apple co-founder Steve Jobs are widely recognized as two prominent pioneers of the personal computer revolution of the 1970s and 1980s.
Lukas Haas as Daniel Kottke: Daniel Kottke was a college friend of Steve Jobs and one of the first employees of Apple Inc.
Victor Rasuk as Bill Fernandez: Bill Fernandez is a user-interface architect and inventor who was Apple Computer's first employee when after incorporated in 1977 and is, overall, Apple employee #4. He is the son of Judge Bill Fernandez and Bambi Fernandez (both Stanford University graduates). He worked on both the Apple I and Apple II personal computers, and in the 1980s was a member of the Apple Macintosh development team. He contributed to several user interface aspects of the classic Mac OS, QuickTime and HyperCard and owns a user interface patent granted in 1994. He is also credited with introducing fellow Homestead High School student Steve Jobs to his friend (and Homestead alumn) Steve Wozniak. Eddie Hassell as Chris Espinosa: Chris Espinosa is a senior employee of Apple Inc., officially employee number 8. Having joined the company at the age of fourteen in 1976 when it was still housed in Steve Jobs' parents' garage, writing software manuals and coding after school, he is the company's current and all-time longest-serving employee. Ron Eldard as Rod Holt: Frederick Rodney Holt is an American computer engineer and political activist. He is Apple employee #5, and developed the unique power supply for the 1977 Apple II.
Nelson Franklin as Bill Atkinson: Bill Atkinson is an American computer engineer and photographer. Atkinson worked at Apple Computer from 1978 to 1990. Atkinson was the principal designer and developer of the graphical user interface (GUI) of the Apple Lisa and, later, one of the first thirty members of the original Apple Macintosh development team, and was the creator of the ground-breaking MacPaint application, which fulfilled the vision of using the computer as a creative tool.
