[Within a day, the entire school was buzzing with rumors about someone breaking into a locked room in the upstairs corridor. Several names were passed around -- Penny Haywood, Rowan Khanna, Merula Snyde -- but just about all of them were positive that at least one person who was involved was that delinquent Jacob Cromwell’s sister, Carewyn.

When her prefect Felix Rosier confronted her about the rumors, Carewyn lied to his face, claiming that she went into that room completely on her own. Felix didn’t seem to fully believe her, but he was brusque in his reaction.

“Well, at least Slytherin will only lose house points because of you and not Snyde and Khanna, then.”

He also told Carewyn to meet Albus Dumbledore out to the Courtyard that evening -- apparently the Headmaster also wished to speak with her, to discuss “everything she’d done wrong that year.” After dinner, Rowan offered to walk with Carewyn until she reached the Courtyard, but Carewyn declined as gently as she could.]

Carewyn: “It’s okay, Rowan. We’ve got our Charms exam first thing tomorrow morning -- I know you wanted to study up for it. I’ll be all right.”

[Rowan didn’t look entirely convinced, but she didn’t push too hard. Instead she glanced down at the suit of armor to their left, considering her response.]

Rowan: “(whispers) ...You don’t really think Professor Dumbledore would expel you, do you?"

[Carewyn’s lips came together solemnly.]

Carewyn: “(softly) ...He might.”

He expelled Jacob, and I still barely understand why...

[Rowan looked very upset at this thought. She took Carewyn’s hand, giving it a rather affectionate squeeze.]

Rowan: “He can’t, Carewyn. He just can’t -- not before we solve this mystery!”

[She put on her best attempt at a smile.]

Rowan: “I want to know the truth! Why the Cursed Vaults were made, who made them, what’s inside them -- why your brother went after them and why you heard his voice in the Artifact Room. And most of all...I want you to find out what happened to him...maybe even find him again. Then you can seal the Vaults together and save Hogwarts! I want to know how it all ends!”

[Her black eyes were sparkling with a sincere, determined fire despite the moisture that clung to their corners.

Carewyn stared at Rowan, faintly stunned -- then, her lips spreading into a rather emotional smile, she moved up onto her tiptoes, extended her arms, and actually encircled Rowan in a big hug.]

Carewyn: “(quietly)...Thank you, Rowan.”

You’re such a good friend...I’m so glad you’re mine...

[Rowan squeezed her much shorter best friend in the biggest bear hug, trying to hold in her own emotion. She even gave a very loud sniff and wiped her eyes once she pulled back, clearly trying not to cry as she offered Carewyn a weak smile. Carewyn smiled back much more bravely before slowly turning on her heel and heading for the Courtyard, her head held high despite the trepedation pounding at the inside of her chest.

For, truly, she didn’t know what the Headmaster would say. She saw him at mealtimes in the Great Hall often enough, but he’d been away a lot of the school year, so she’d never encountered him in the halls. She hadn’t even ever spoken to him one on one -- the one time she thought she might, Snape ended up speaking to them on his behalf instead...

So when Carewyn found Dumbledore waiting in the Clocktower Courtyard, his focus skyward toward the stars, she had no idea what to expect. She took a deep breath and, steadying her courage, walked up to him. When she got within three feet of him, Dumbledore looked down at her.]

[He didn’t sound angry. His voice was very calm and level.]

Carewyn: “Of course, sir.”

[Dumbledore considered Carewyn for a moment. His light blue eyes were very piercing upon her face -- like a pair of diamonds that could look through her. And yet when Carewyn tried to get a fix on what he was feeling, she found it difficult: like Snape, Dumbledore had a remarkably good Poker face. He’d always seemed relatively pleasant, whenever he gave announcements in the Great Hall...but in that moment, Carewyn realized how little she truly knew about this man. How could someone who spoke so pleasantly be the same man who expelled her brother? Expelled Jacob, who loved Hogwarts and learning more than anything else in the entire world? And for what? Why would he do that? Was the kindness just an act? Was it sincere? Did he regret expelling Jacob, now that he’d disappeared? Did he think Jacob deserved it, for being a “delinquent” and going after the Vaults? Even though the Vaults’ curses were a danger to Hogwarts...?

Carewyn had trouble keeping eye contact. It felt like Dumbledore was reading a lot more from her than she could from him. It made her feel very disconcerted.]

Carewyn: “...Professor Dumbledore, I -- ”

Dumbledore: “(serenely) It’s beautiful, isn’t it?”

[Carewyn looked up, startled. Dumbledore had turned his focus skyward again, his lips spread into a dewy smile.]

[His eyes became a little smaller, more focused, upon one constellation in particular.]

Dumbledore: “I oftentimes come here whenever I need to make an important decision.”

[Carewyn’s heart sank. She had a bad feeling she knew what that decision had to be.]

Well, no point sidestepping things...

Carewyn: “...Felix Rosier said you wanted to talk to me about everything I’ve done wrong this year...about the room with the cursed ice.”

[Dumbledore returned his focus to Carewyn, his face noticeably more serious, but there was also something almost...guarded, in what he said next.]

[Carewyn’s shoulders stiffened.]

It’s like he really can see right through me.

[It was a feeling Carewyn immediately decided she really didn’t like.

Stoically trying to hide her intense discomfort, Carewyn forced herself to look the Headmaster straight-on in the eye.]

I want the truth. Why did you do it?

[Dumbledore regarded Carewyn carefully. Even if Carewyn couldn’t read his expression, she supposed he was trying to decide how best to answer the question -- Carewyn found adults often did this, when they talked to children. She’d seen people do this with their kids, when asked about whether Father Christmas was real -- censor themselves or find a way to answer without lying flat-out to their face...]

Carewyn: “(before she could stop herself) Because of him looking for the Cursed Vaults? But if the Vaults were hurting people -- if they could hurt people again -- ”

Dumbledore: “I’ve been seeking out an expert in that very subject. There are many mysteries within this castle’s walls, Carewyn...and I would encourage you to seek out those that are less dangerous.”

[Carewyn’s eyes narrowed with some frustration.]

Carewyn: “I don’t care about solving mysteries! All I care about is my brother and knowing what happened to him. Please...Professor, if you know anything about what happened, you have to tell me.”

[Dumbledore’s face betrayed something softer, almost pitying.]

Dumbledore: “...I’m afraid I lack just as many answers about Jacob’s fall as you do, Carewyn. He was a brilliant student -- easily one of Hogwarts’s brightest stars academically, however arrogant his abilities made him...but he aligned himself with people I could not allow to breech the walls of this school -- not even through Jacob himself.”

[His eyes became a little smaller and grimmer.]

Dumbledore: “...It’s a decision I did not make lightly -- nor one I look upon with any fondness.”

[Carewyn felt her heart pounding faster.]

Carewyn: “(challenging) Who were those people? Why was Jacob with them? Why couldn’t -- ?”

Dumbledore: “All wonderful questions -- but ones I’m afraid I’m ill-equipped to answer.”

[This was a very unsatisfying answer for Carewyn. She stared at the Headmaster for a moment, lost for words -- but before long, it was clear he’d said all he was going to.

Carewyn bowed her head, closing her eyes to try to hold in both her intense frustration and pain.]

Oh Jacob...what did you get yourself into...?

[Dumbledore considered Carewyn for a moment longer before speaking again.]

Dumbledore: “...Something tells me, however, that you’ll learn more about Jacob’s fate in the coming years at Hogwarts.”

[Carewyn looked up again, startled.]

Carewyn: “...Then...you’re not going to expel me?”

Dumbledore: “Dueling in the Courtyard without supervision -- drugging our caretaker’s cat -- breaking into a room that was specifically proclaimed off-limits and protected with warding enchantments, so as to protect the rest of the school from its contents. But even with those mistakes, you have also demonstrated great resourcefulness, talent, bravery, and most of all, compassion. I’ll have you know that Ben Copper and two of his dormmates even sent me letters on your behalf after your duel with Merula Snyde, just to tell me about what had happened and how much you didn’t deserve to be punished. The last one even came to my office in person, to tell me the same thing himself -- and to compare you to a Chinese Fireball protecting her eggs.”

[His eyes twinkled with amusement at the look of complete shock and disbelief on Carewyn’s face.]

[Carewyn was completely sideswiped. She caught herself actually gawking, her mouth wide open in amazement -- she quickly closed her mouth, but she struggled to come up with a proper response.]

He -- but -- this whole thing was because of all the mistakes I made, but he -- why would he -- when he knew that I -- ?

[Dumbledore gave her another dewy smile.]

Dumbledore: “You’re welcome. But mind this, Carewyn -- in the years to come, you must be mindful about how your decisions impact others. Remember -- it is not our abilities that show what we truly are. It is our choices.”

[Unbidden, the memory of grabbing the once-again locked doorknob of the icy room in the upstairs corridor, only to discard it in favor of running back down the hall to find Penny and Rowan, rippled over Carewyn’s mind.]

In the end, it’s not my magic that got us out of that room. If I hadn’t made sure Penny and Rowan were safe first...if I’d left them, in favor of going after Merula...then they probably would’ve been caught and Merula and I would’ve probably frozen to death, when the ice finally overwhelmed us...

[Carewyn’s eyes narrowed with a rekindled kind of fire, and she nodded firmly.]

Carewyn: “...Mm.”

[Dumbledore inclined his head to Carewyn, surveying her over his half-moon spectacles.]

Dumbledore: “You show much promise, Carewyn. I do indeed look forward to seeing how you’ll grow here, at Hogwarts. But in the meantime...study up for your exams, so that you’ll only have your summer holidays to look forward to.”

((OOC: Why yes, the Gryffindor boys’ dorm all banded together to try to defend Carewyn from getting expelled! These boys are the best boys!! *huggles her Ben, Corey, Jae, and Charlie plushies* 🥰

No, Dumbledore doesn’t know much about R at all, but he does know how very, very dangerous their members are thanks to what little he was able to glean from Rakepick and he does suspect Charles’s involvement. Dumbledore would frankly prefer it if Carewyn didn’t go down Jacob’s path since he doesn’t want her to become Charles’s pawn too, but he ends up having trouble trying to mentor or guide Carewyn the way he does Harry because Carewyn quite frankly doesn’t need a mentor, the way Harry did. She doesn’t lack a sense of direction or self-confidence that Dumbledore could try to encourage or support, and yet her emotions are so loud thanks to her undeveloped Legilimency that Dumbledore can sense how unpolished she still is, personality-wise. It makes it so that Dumbledore wishes he could promote these heroic impulses in Carewyn and help point them in what he views as the “proper direction,” but is left lost about how to do so, when Carewyn already is so headstrong and has so little interest in relying on anyone else, let alone her professors.

Next up...Carewyn’s second year, starting with Ben’s disappearance and the resurgence of the cursed ice!))

This is for the most part all my headcanon. Bill and Charlie are the only ones with canon bdays so I marked those with *s. Rowan doesn’t have a canon birthday but it’s implied to be around Christmas time buuuut I hadn’t played the sidequest that had that info when I was writing my fanfic and gave her a birthday in May so whatevs. JC doesn’t deserve Rowan anyways.

Unless JC gives me actual dates for the characters' birthdays, I'll make it up myself!!

This has been added to my masterlist post. And note that these are just my personal headcanons for the characters' birthdays for me to follow in my MCs' stories. Plus I want to make art and scenarios where my MCs celebrate a characters' birthday. And I'd like to do that every year on the same day, so yeah that's mainly about it. Introducing The Top 5 Winners of This Year’s Pastel 100 Competition

The number of entries for the 19th Annual Pastel 100 Competition totaled more than 2,500. That’s a lot of paintings — and a lot of great pastel talent!

Pastel Journal magazine is pleased to announce the winners of this year’s Annual Pastel 100 Competition.

We’ll have reproductions of all the prize-winning paintings, and artist interviews and juror comments, in the April 2018 issue of Pastel Journal. Until then, congratulations to all of 2017 winners!

Introducing the Top Winners of the 19th Annual Pastel 100 Competition

From still lifes to entrancing landscapes, here is a sneak peek into some of the remarkable, winning artists from the 19th Annual Pastel 100 Competition.

Pastel Journal Founder’s Award in Memory of Maggie Price ($5,000) — Aurelio Rodriguez López

Painting Old Chinese Pottery by Aurelio Rodriguez Lopez, pastel

Aurelio Rodriguez López was born in Génave, Spain. He began his art training during his teenage years by taking classes at Baeza Art School in Baeza.

Throughout his career, he has exhibited his work in all corners of the world. From all across Spain, Madrid to China, and New York to London, Rodrigues’s work has been seen and loved by viewers for decades.

Pastel Journal Award of Excellence ($2,500) — Jacob Aguiar

Marsh Complements by Jacob Aguiar, pastel

“I can remember as a kid staying up until midnight drawing comic book characters with friends, or sitting in the car while my parents had to run errands so I could draw what I saw out the window,” says Jacob Aguiar.

In 2011, Aguiar took a leave from his medical studies to pursue art in the small Northern California town of Sebastopol. Not sure of what medium he wished to work in, he happened upon the landscape pastels of Richard McKinley during an internet search. “Needless to say, I was hooked immediately,” he notes.

He’s since graduated from school. And today, he spends three days a week as a naturopathic doctor in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and devotes his time-off to his love of art.

Ruth Richeson Pastel GOLD Award (pastels and surfaces valued over $2,000) — Nancy Nowak

Gallery Street by Nancy Nowak, pastel

Nancy Nowak earned her B.A. at the Cleveland Institute of Art in 1981, where her main interests were enameling and oil painting.

After owning calligraphy and printing businesses, she rededicated herself and her life to her art, striving to evoke an emotional response and awareness to the everyday beauty that surrounds us.

Nowak’s work is representational in style but with an impressionist flair. The artist also offers workshops and classes in pastel, focusing on landscapes.

Richeson Pastel SILVER Award (pastels and surfaces valued over $1,500) — Corey Pitkin

The Golden Apple by Corey Pitkin, pastel

Corey Pitkin is a predominantly self-taught artist. He won multiple awards from regional and national competitions by the time he graduated high school.

After a “loss of creative drive” in his 20s, the artist renewed his love for art-making and has since gone from a relatively unknown to an award winner in local, national and international competitions.

Richeson Pastel BRONZE Award (pastels and surfaces valued at $1,000) — Colette Odya Smith

Understory by Colette Odya Smith, pastel

Colette Odya Smith earned her degree in fine art, humanities and education from Macalester College in St. Paul. She spent about 10 years teaching art at a Wisconsin school while raising two children and “making art around the edges.”

For the last two decades, she has focused on her painting career. “Laying pastels over a watercolor underpainting, I have developed working methods that expand the expressive range of this versatile medium, at times using ripped and layered surfaces, textured elements and gold and copper leaf,” she says.

A different soccer year is proper all-around the corner, but the Major twenty five teams however have decisions to make. Even defending champ Clemson has to come to a decision if Kelly Bryant is all set to choose over at QB.

In this article are the essential placement battles for the top teams.

If the Buckeyes system to air it out this year, they will want to settle on the targets quarterback J.T. Barrett can trust.
