(POTENTIAL SPOILER AHEAD)

Yan is there on the defensive position against the amanto hordes outside the terminal, alongside with the rest of the 7th division, and at the same time, trying to not get hit by all the amanto Kamui's tossing around (and Abuto exasperatedly going, cut it out! we're on the same side as you, you know! in the background). I would've LOVED to see one last action sequence from our friendly neighborhood yatos but alas 😞

And of course, Teito is fighting inside the terminal back-to-back with Hijikata, Sougo, Kondo, Robozaki, and the other Shinsengumi members. At one point in the battle, he has to play mediator between Hijikata and Sougo, encouraging them to talk their feelings out (oh they talk their feelings out alright; hijikata with his potty mouth and sougo with his bazooka) like they're not currently in the middle of an important fight to protect Earth (Kondo going, uh guys!? please focus on the fight?!)

Scenes later, Takasugi has finally gone still in Gintoki's arms. And Gintoki's head is lowering, permed hair covering to shield his eyes—

until a foot breaks across the screen and smashes into Gintoki's face.

Get off my patient. You can have yer boy love scene later.

(There's a small cut before, where you see Seiji's back swiftly running through the injured, calling out some helpful-entirely-unhelpful medical advice free-of-charge from the goodness of his heart along the way; 'better some pressure on that or you'll be eating yer taiyaki with one hand' (isn't taiyaki usually eaten with one hand anyway though?!) or 'call yer girlfriend and let her know she'll be mourning your loss in looks' (that's not an injury, that's just the way he naturally looks like— you're just insulting him!). Snaps open his justaway watch, saying "My, look at the time! The main character [referring to himself 🙄] can't be late to the most important scene in the show!")

Seiji's involvement with Takasugi is revealed, their connection going back to the fight between Oboro and Takasugi— well no, you could say it started even longer before any of them had a clue about each other... but that's not really important right now is it? You have some brats to protect doncha, Gintoki? Get going already.

A Gintama chapter a day keeps the ending away…Lesson 700

PRINCE OF TENNIS SURE IS GOO~~D!! IT’S MY EVERYTHI~~NG!!!

MY 12 FAVORITE MOMENTS IN LESSON 700:

I just realized today that for once Tae-chan was joining in on the fight, totally showing what a badass she is, and Kondou was around to see it, and yet they didn’t have even one panel together. [sigh] I am sadness. 

1) This extended family. Love them so much!

2) Bless Robozaki! He’s become such a good, wise and cool adult robot!

3) I will never not love Gin-chan’s dead serious, kill-you-on-the-spot looks.

4) Zura bouncing off the walls during his free fall to defeat his enemy was so damn cool. 

5) Seriously I can’t wait for all these fights to be animated. I hope they don’t skimp on the budget for them. 

6) It’s the same image as before but it still makes my heart hurt a little, though at the same time, I’m glad that spiritually, all of Shouyou’s students are together again.

7) Ugh, my heart. So proud of these boys. They’ve come so far. Shouyou would be so proud.

8) “...thank you.” I started crying. It was so beautiful and touching but at the same time, it made me so sad because I don’t want it to be the last time! I don’t want them to have the last time of anything. They can insult each other and still help each other and thank each other. The finality of Sougo and Shinpachi’s words really hurt me. I can’t stop thinking about them and worrying about them.

9) I didn’t really think Takasugi would die just like that since he still needs to see Matako and Henpeita one last time first, but Sorachi-sama sure did a good job trying to convince me.

10) Tears again: those desperate looks on their faces aimed straight for my heart.

11) “I always could.” Crying forever

12) PUPPY TO THE RESCUE!!!! I CAN’T WAIT!!!!! In five weeks...gods that’s gonna feel like five years....

SHIPS TALLY:

Gintoki x Takasugi: I was seriously getting a little jelly of all the love going on between these two. But, they earned it, they went back much farther so, they deserve it.

Okita x Kagura: I’m just so glad they were in next to each other for that short time and Kagura was even finishing Sougo’s sentence (see #8). I grateful for whatever small moment I can get of them.  

Kondou x Hijikata: they had this odd moment where they just exchanged looks, like they didn’t even need words to understand what the other person was thinking.

Disclaimer: Gintama is not only about shipping. Gintama is hilarious, clever, exciting, poignant, heart-breaking, loving, brilliant, and just completely unbelievably amazing.  It is only due to Sorachi-sama’s immense generosity that I am able enjoy Gintama on an extra another level, the shippy level, and I am forever grateful for that. GINTAMA IS LIFE AND LOVE.

Gintama The Final Chapter Review.

This will probably be the last time I’m reviewing a Gintama chapter. It’s not something that I’ve steadily pursued, but I’ve always enjoyed writing them, so I’m gonna miss that. Some of the more important scenes will have a separate post and not be included here. There are many things I wish we could’ve seen, many things I wish didn’t happen. But that didn’t suck the fun out of the series for me, so we can totally save the ranting and raving for later. Gintama is not perfect. It is far from being unproblematic. Fans always say that Gintama has the best this, has the best that... I never agree. But that’s okay, I don’t need Gintama to be perfect. If you love something you have to take the bad with the good, that’s how you learn, and we are all capable of drawing the line between what’s wrong and what’s right, so there’s no reason we can’t enjoy the final chapter, or even the series in its entirety. Besides, Gintama promotes way more positivity than it does negativity, and given that it’s the last chapter, it deserved to be celebrated for its best parts. 

My only complain going into this chapter is, 704 is such an ugly even number to end a beautiful series at. Let’s go.

Shoyou straight up said in our face that Katsura is the smartest and the most intelligent and has the highest IQ and the one with the most braincells among all of his students... I mean...DAMN RIGHT HE IS!  I wish Zura and Shoyou had interacted more face to face.

I hate that he had to watch Takasugi die after trying to protect him all this time

Oh wow. This is beautiful. I’m so happy that Shoyou got to see Gintoki’s family...his 2 kids...he even has a pet and a wife/partner figure...someone Shoyou didn’t have. Shoyou knows that Shinpachi and Kagura to Gintoki is what Gintoki was to him. Gintoki turned him good. Turned the demon into a human. Just like the Yorozuya changed Gintoki from the demon’s child, the White Demon, into-

-SUCH A GREAT PERSON. 

Of course...there’d be no Gintama without Tama...without a soul to store all of these lessons.

Why is the terminal still there...I thought it was destroyed

Can’t tell if he’s mocking people who died or if he’s given up on life

Everything’s changed. Edo’s changed. They have all changed individually. They’d moved on with their lives. Gintoki found a purpose, Kagura left to travel the universe, Shinpachi ran Yorozuya on his own, Tae had her own business...Sorachi already explored the path where all these characters got their shonen-styled endgames. And then Gintoki came home. Suddenly it doesn’t feel like anything has changed at all...because they’re all still together. And they decided that’s how they want their lives to be. Because at the end of the day that’s how real life is, no matter how much we’ve changed, we’ll always come back home, to our family.

IDIOT? Excuse me he’s the brighest prodigy of Shoka Shojuku get it right mthrfckr. But HAHAHAHA ISTG I love the straightman’s act in this chapter so much it’s so funny and nothing feels forced. 

I feel sorry for Catherine for having to leave Gintama looking like that. Really wanted to see the best version of herself one last time.

Why- who ruined this moment. Who the fuck is actually narrating this shit I’m dying

THIS IS THE BEST ENDING.

This is how Sorachi had always planned to end Gintama. He wrote BFY as the original ending, lets remember that, and he followed BFY’s storyline very closely in Silver Soul. I couldn’t be more satisfied.

People who are complaining, I’m glad they’re unhappy about how this final chapter turned out, because they never understood Sorachi, or his story, or his characters. They got what they deserve. For the rest of us, congratulation for sticking with the Yorozuya until the very end.

MY 17 FAVORITE MOMENTS IN LESSON 684:

1) Tae-chan was pretty much checking out their packages, especially Yamazaki’s mosaic.

2) Takasugi obviously got infected by Gintoki’s dork virus.

3) Or maybe Takasugi was always a dork, even in his evil villain phase. Either way, Hijikata’s indignant reaction was hilarious.

4) I really want to know who Yamazaki was reacting to in order to be able to keep his Tower of Babel up. Hopefully it was Tae-chan.

5) Good to know that Tae-chan hadn’t lost her violent edge in the two years.

6) She is so brutal. I love her. But poor Yamazaki. Ouch. Thank the gods he’s Robozaki now.

7) He got his penis pummeled and his head ripped off, of course he couldn’t stay as Yama or Robozaki anymore. I didn’t understand the Colonel thing at first but now I have since been educated that apparently KFC is beloved in Japan. I’m guessing it’s probably because they make it better there...they seriously make everything better there. 

8) And suddenly I wondered if Tae-chan is actually a GinHiji shipper herself.

9) Omg she is seriously BRUTAL. And of course by this point I had to think Tae-chan must have seen through their disguise. I mean, otherwise that would just be randomly sadistic.

10) I actually thought that was rather clever of Otae to turn their dojo into a weight loss center. Of course she was totally scamming her students since she made sure they stayed chubby with all the Haagen Daez, but that just makes her an even smarter businesswoman.

11) KYUU-CHAN IS SO BEAUTIFUL!!!! Like, dashing AND pretty at the same time.

12) So happy to see that the Yagyuu devas were all present again, especially Toujou.

13) I was actually pretty saddened when I thought he had passed away. Already started to miss the little old geezer.

14) I am of course still hoping that someone could end up being a woman, but I also understand Kyuu-chan’s strong sense of duty to her family. It would be nice if she could just have baby with some guy to carry on the Yagyuu clan and have a female lover...even though I also think she seems to only be Tae-sexual.  I’m just happy she is at peace with herself. She looks so beautifully joyful.

15) This was actually an odd bit of conversation since it sounded like they both thought Gintoki was in love with Kyuubei. Not that I’m objecting, but it is interesting that they would even think he’d care about her being in a wedding dress.

16) And then when something like this happens, I realize I’m stupid to even think Kyuu-chan can ever be with a man. He wouldn’t survive the attempt.

17) Bimbokusai lives! And I was genuinely happy about it.

SHIPS TALLY: 

Gintoki x Hijikata: they’re still together, suffering together, being discarded like trash together. That’s enough to make me immensely pleased.

Kyuubei x Otae: they’re still spending time together. Although, to be honest, since Kyuu-chan lacked the intensity of emotion she usually possesses around Tae-chan, I actually thought that was evidence that Otae was indeed married to Kondou. Would explain why she was finally willing to even seriously consider marriage. Didn’t mean to turn this into a KonTae thing, but that was what I was thinking when I first read this chapter.

Gintoki x Kyuubei: yes, even now I still think that if Gintoki had to end up with any of the Ginta ladies, I would still prefer that woman be Kyuubei. 

Hijikata x Yamazaki: they were communicating with each other psychically!!!  

Hijikata x Otae or Yamazaki x Otae: both could apply here, since it depends on whether or not she saw through the disguise. Either way, she wanted to see some nakedness.

MY 20 FAVORITE MOMENTS IN LESSON 674:

I LOVE THIS CHAPTER TOO!!! SO MUCH TO REJOICE OVER!!! BEWARE: LOTS OF YELLING AHEAD BECAUSE I WAS FREAKING THE FUCK OUT THROUGH MOST OF THIS CHAPTER!

1) OMFGSHESSOCUTEITSUNREAL!!!!! I LOVED HER IMMEDIATELY AND WANTED TO PROTECT HER FOREVER!!!!

2) I don’t even think I cared that the math didn’t add up, I just loved her to bits and wanted her to be absolutely for real.

3) THEY WERE STILL TALKING!! I was so worried that after the last chapter it would jumpcut to a different scene and Gintoki would already be ushered off to somewhere else or something like that (I’m paranoid). The fact that they were still continuing their conversation was enough to make me so happy already.

4) I WANTED GINTOKI TO LODGE THERE FOR FREE, FOREVER!!!! It’s almost CRUEL how Sorachi-sama teased me with that idea!

5) That was unexpected. When I first read the last chapter, I thought he was just some random Shinsengumi member, don’t even think I spared him a glance, so when Hijikata addressed him here, I think I was surprised too. 

6) Love the metaness. I thought he was an insignificant mobcop too. 

7) In fact, I think I was a little annoyed that this mobcop was now disrupting the conversation between my Gintoki and Hijikata. 

8) I was actually happy when Hijikata smacked him. I had NO IDEA WHO HE WAS AT THE TIME. 

9) And then I thought, oh, he’s like a Tama-type robot, but more disgusting. Wtf.

10) Still no idea who he was, just thought his backstory was kinda sad. But I was still slightly annoyed we were taking precious GinHiji time to focus on this Mobcop. I can’t believe how stupid I was; should’ve guessed he was important based on the time spent on him!

11) Gintoki being such an understanding counselor.

12) Yep, I flipped out. Never expected this AT ALL.

13) But then I was instantly glad that not only did our precious Yamazaki survive, he was now better equipped to be with Tama. They’re totally perfect for each other! And they even have an offspring in Tamako. My dream of Yamazaki being Tama’s special screw was that much closer to becoming true. I was happiness.

14) They kinda deserved this for forgetting poor Jimmy. Obviously no one even picked up Yamazaki from where they left him once the battle was over. I don’t blame Gin-chan as much cuz he had a lot of things going on, but I definitely blame his Shinsengumi brothers.

15) NOOOOO!!!! I DIDN’T WANT HIM TO LEAAAVE!!!!! Dammit Gintoki!!!!

16) These two precious babies!!! They really are so adorable it was almost unbearable!

17) ACK! SO CUTE! I DIED. She really IS the ultimate weapon. No one can survive her cuteness!

18) That made absolutely no sense but I didn’t even CARE what banana or whose banana, I was just grateful to the banana for producing this little angel with Kagura. 

19) Complete nonsense, but I STILL DIDN’T CARE. If Kanna-chan says she’s Kagura’s daughter, then by the gods she IS Kagura’s daughter. I mean, yeah, eventually I did wonder (before the reveal) if maybe she was a clone or like a long lost sister or something crazy like that, but at THAT moment I really didn’t care.

20) AND ALL WAS RIGHT WITH THE TIMESKIP WORLD AGAIN!!!!! HALLELUJAH!!! THE PRINCE RETURNS!!!!! I wept from joy and relief.

SHIPS TALLY:

Gintoki x Hijikata: omg Gintoki’s expression...my heart melted from how soft it was!! Like, that was just for Hijikata and Hijikata alone. No one else has ever seen him with such a tender look. And now, knowing what we know, Hijikata’s reaction just makes me tear up. He must’ve been sooooooo disappointed!!! Ugh, my heart aches for him.

A Gintama chapter a day keeps the ending away...Lesson 692

I totally count these title panels as one of my favorite moments in this glorious chapter.

MY 15 FAVORITE MOMENTS IN LESSON 692:

I LOVED THIS CHAPTER SO DAMN MUCH!!! Naturally it’s one of my favorite chapters in this timeskip arc for a very obvious reason. I was moved to TEARS. 

1) Right from the start, I loved that caption which reiterated our Joui 3′s bond.

2) They’ve always bet on Gintoki’s pure white. Zura really says the most beautiful things all the time. Ugh...my heart.

3) chronologically speaking, the title panels as I in the beginning.

4) Robozaki’s reappearance! I was especially happy to see him since that also meant...

5) ...Hijikata’s reappearance! Loved everyone’s reaction, especially Okita’s since it’s obvious they haven’t seen each other for a while.

6) Loved their matching looks of gleeful anticipation and determination.

7) Not really a favorite moment but rather a slightly emotional one since I would never like seeing the Shinsengumi sign on the floor. 

8) THIS. THIS IS EVERYTHING. TWO YEARS! TWO WHOLE FUCKING YEARS!!! I still have NOT recovered from this. Or rather, I am STILL living off the high of this signal moment. My heart almost couldn’t take it the first time I saw this because it was seriously in danger of bursting from pure joy.

9) The fact that Hijikata’s been keeping track of Gintoki and knew EXACTLY why he left and still went to look for him, totally not judging. I can’t even.

10) Hijikata’s monologue made my heart soar so high it still hasn’t returned to me from the clouds: “The ones that stopped the Shinsengumi, stopped the world, from ending...themselves just ending like this...even if they’ve accepted it, we...the only reason we’re standing here is because they saved us. So, we can’t accept that, can we? This time it’s our turn.”

11) Bless Kondou for agreeing with Toshi.

12) The rest of my boys in black. And honestly, this is how screwed up my selective memory is, when I saw Saitou and Sarada here, I totally forgot I already saw them a few chapters back so I got happy all over again seeing them here, thinking it was the first time. My brain is mostly broken, obviously.

13) I think I got weepy the first time I saw this since it was totally reminiscent of one of the best moments in the Farewell Shinsengumi arc, and tonight I got weepy all over again seeing it once again. I’ll probably cry when I finally get around to watching the episode with this moment. So damn beautiful and meaningful. 

14) The Yorozuya. They are rejoicing because they need to protect the Yorozuya. HOW CAN I NOT LOVE THIS TO DEATH????

15) My heart burst. I’ve actually been posting from the grave all this time; naturally, since the first moment I saw this, I did not survive the experience.

SHIPS TALLY: 

Gintoki x Hijikata: Hijikata is in love with Gintoki. That is FACT. It is known. 

Okita x Kagura: please refer to moment #15. One might say Sougo has been by HIS Yorozuya’s side as soon as she stepped foot back on Earth.  

Hijikata x Okita: amazingly I still had the wherewithal to notice the cute interaction between them. My heart might have moved on already but they still live within my memories.

Robozaki makes a glorious return

Yeah,yeah those two are awesome team we get it. Can a plot please move along

HA Gintoki obviously meant that town is a kid and he is his parent but Takasugi blutantly tells bitter truth

Judging by eyebrow it is Hisugi. Honestly his whole character one big meh

Lol again this page show panels from last chapters except the one where excuse me Gintoki cut the  guy RIGHT hand

Of course it could be prothesis but the real question is why they dont put prothesis on both hands. And also where the talk about four limbs comes from.

 And that was never explained how they were healed

Havent they already choped him like Nobume said at the start of Rakuyo? 

Now the good twist would be if Takasugi have already become adherent of Tengenism and is going to do exactly what Gintoki said.

Isnt it pretty much what Tendoshuu was?

I am pretty sure in the past there were bigger guys than this bastard. Another point where exactly Takasugi is going? He doesnt have that much ties with Edo so what? Visiting Bansai grave? Meeting with Zura? The second seems more likely since he is talking to Gintoki about seeing someone. 

The glasses gag is never-ending. 

The fandom might joke about Yamazaki and anpan as much as they want but it got nothing on Sorachi Hideaki. He simpy out of this world

Stop making faces from yaoi doujinshis, Hijikata. Yaoi fangirls have enough imaginations on their own.

Buy him some anpan already. 

Finaly

That was fast. 

HEH. But Tae reappearing may means that either there is going to be some Gintae or Sorachi writing off Kondo marriage to real gorilla to make us believe that this all truth after all. Overall it wasnt a bad chapter but somehow I wish plot would unfold faster. Until next week
