Monkey Dust is definitely underrated as hell amongst the already well forgotten age of melancholic and edgy British adult animation in the 2000s that reflected the depressing aspects of the UK (which have gotten worse in passing time).
Beginning in 2003 and airing three seasons, it unfortunately had to be cancelled when its creator Harry Thompson passed away from cancer in 2005.
My favourite recurring character from this show is probably the Tony Blair parody given how the same promises are made over and over with a mix of some ridiculous ones. One of these policies he says in this video were actually PASSED by him though, I’ll let you try and guess which one. Once again, looking back, it’s depressing to see how these proposed policies are needed even more with how worse things have gotten, especially “house prices being cheaper”. God.
Currently only the first season of Monkey Dust is available to watch through DVD, but the whole series has thankfully been archived here.
By the way I love the music playing during Blair’s scenes. It perfectly captures the sad reality that the animation really conveys. It’s “A Place in the Wilderness” by Roger Eno and is thankfully on Spotify.
