When Claude Monet set up his easel in the Saint-Lazare train station, or gare, it was the largest and busiest depot in Paris. Thanks to his influential friend, the artist Gustave Caillebotte (whose work is on view in this gallery), Monet was able to rent an apartment in the nearby rue Moncey and begin the first of 12 canvases showing this icon of modernity. He displayed seven of them, including this one, at the Third Impressionist Exhibition in April of that year. Legend has it that he arranged to have the standing locomotives stoked with extra coal so that he could observe and paint the effeets of belching steam-dull gray when trapped inside the station, white and cloudlike when seen against the sky.

During his London painting campaigns, Claude Monet depicted the Houses of Parliament in the late afternoon and at sunset from a terrace at Saint Thomas's Hospital.

Even more than in his compositions of the bridges over the river Thames (also on view in this gallery), Monet dissolved the complicated, pseudo-Gothie silhouette of the government buildings into the hazy, foggy atmosphere and the water from which they seem to rise. In his response to the poetry of dusk and mist, Monet was inspired by American artist James MeNeill Whistler's paintings of the Thames.

Early in 1884 Claude Monet traveled to Bordighera, a town on the Italian Riviera near the border between Italy and France, for a working visit of three weeks that turned into nearly three months. In a letter to sculptor Auguste Rodin describing his efforts to capture the brilliant Mediterranean light, Monet declared that he was "fencing, wrestling, with the sun." In other letters he complained of the impossibility of finding a suitable subject amid the region's abundant vegetation. In this sun-drenched composition painted from a hilltop vantage point, the sea is barely visible through the interlaced trunks of local pine trees.

What I connect with…

Monet's demonstration of color theory is masterful. Such a joy to witness. I included Bordighera because it kept making me want to look at it and I was trying to understand why. I realized it made me think it was an Australian landscape, and only because the light is so strong creating these high contrasts. The light in Australia is like that. This contrast was juxtaposed so distinctly because the other works by Monet are much more atmospheric, or depicting different times of the day. Bordighera looks like midday sun in the middle of the bush somewhere in Australia, looking out on those Australian waters. Maybe i'm just homesick.

Paris, place d’Estienne d’Orves, 9ème arrondissement, pas loin de l’opéra, des grands magasins, de la Gare Saint-Lazare, de chez moi.

Assis sur un bloc de pierre je regarde passer les piétons. Il est 18 heures 30.

Je reste une bonne demi-heure, regarde, photographie ces scènes de rue. 

Il fait beau, chaud, c’est le deuxième jour de l’été 2023. Un de plus. 

Le temps passe  beaucoup plus vite, au moins pour moi.

A las 02:45 horas del 17 de marzo de 2021, se recibió una llamada al 911 reportando un accidente de tránsito en la intersección de Rue St Denis y Rue des Lombards. Al llegar al lugar, se encontraron dos vehículos involucrados en una colisión:

Vehículo A: Sedan verde, matrícula JS 368 KH, conducido por la señorita Kittiya Noknoi.

Vehículo B: SUV negro, matrícula PL 697 GQ, conducido por el señor Julien Dupont.

Detalles del Incidente:

22 juillet : la Provence fête sainte Marie Madeleine

Les chrétiens d’Occident comme d’Orient célèbrent Marie de Magdala, ou Marie Madeleine, disciple de Jésus.

Comme chaque année, la paroisse de Saint-Maximin et l’association Santo Madaleno fêtent Marie-Madeleine, leur sainte patronne. À cette occasion, on expose les reliques de la sainte lors d’une grande procession, au pied du massif de la Sainte-Baume puis, à nouveau, dans les rues de Saint-Maximin où elles rejoindront l’imposante basilique gothique qui les conserve précieusement. Si l’Histoire en a gardé peu de traces, il est certain que la Provincia Romana (la Provence) a été évangélisée dès la seconde moitié du premier siècle. La tradition orale nous a transmis les noms de Lazare, Trophime, Salomé, Maximin et Marie-Madeleine. Cette dernière aurait passé les trente dernières années de sa vie dans une grotte du massif de la Sainte-Baume. Sœur de Marthe et de Lazare, elle est décrite comme une pécheresse jusqu’à sa rencontre avec Jésus qu’elle décide de suivre. Elle sera à ses côtés sur le Golgotha lors de la crucifixion, assistera à la mise au tombeau et sera une des premières à le voir ressuscité.

La basilique de Vézelay, dans l’Yonne, est aussi sous le patronage de Marie-Madeleine dont elle s’est longtemps disputé les reliques avec Saint-Maximin.
