Visit Krakow & the Old Town - Part 1

Ráno nám bylo trochu nevolno, takže jsme rozhodly, že dnešní den bude bez alkoholu a před polednem jsme vyrazily na Rynek Glowny do podzemního muzea postavenýho na místě vykopávek. Muzeum je interaktivní a moderní. Velice zábavnou formou je v něm vyložená celá historie Krakova. Strávily jsme tam tři hodiny a vyhnal nás akorát hlad. Došly jsme si zpět na Plac Nowy na nejlepší zapiekanky a pak rovnou do pinball muzea. Přes padesát herních stolů nás tam uvěznilo na pět hodin. Je to past. Nedá se odtamtud odejít. Doteď mi v hlavě hrajou všechny ty zvonky, cingrlátka a flippery.

Tagesausflug nach Krakow und im Sauseschritt durch die Altstadt, Rynek Glowny, Marienkirche, Tuchhallen, kurzer Blick auf die Wawel Burg. Sehr hübsch ist's natürlich, aber auch sehr voll mit Touristen...

Und dass es mit uns jetzt noch zwei mehr sind, freut auch nicht jeden:

LOST ALL HIS MIRTH

Arrived at Krakow Glowny by bus and slept at the laundrette nearby for a few hours. Let my guard down and joined a pub crawl which travelled to four different venues but I only remember the first. Krakow is cold and grey which made sleeping much easier and also suited the sights I visited. I went and saw the Elvis movie in a quaint cinema with a lovely courtyard where I had a Riesling after the death of the King. Afterwards I met up with a dutchman named Kees and we went to a craft beer bar and had some czech lagers. He was on holiday because he has just gone through a horrible breakup and wanted to get out and clear his mind. He was great company for a night but did he also mentioned he blames women as a gender for his broken heart and wasn’t open to changing this opinion despite my pleas. He was staying in my dorm and said he wanted to come along with me the following day where I had planned to see some museums and go to a gig. We got breakfast late in the day and he was so despondent he barely ate anything and just kind of moped at the other end of the table while I awkwardly tried to table topics of jovial nature unsuccessfully. We went back to the accom and i luckily had to live rooms as my bed was already taken by someone else when I extended my stay. Asking what I was doing now in the hall way I told him I was going to my room being leaving surreptitiously, peering around corners before running out the stairway. I wish that lugubrious Dutchman all the best.

I had plans to walk across town over the Vistula to visit some galleries and when I left my accommodation I was met with pouring rain which I was rather happy about and I was able to borrow a brolly from someone. I went to the Oskar Schindler Enamel Factory which now houses an exhibition named Krakow Under Nazi Rule and the Museum of Contemporary Art which had some artworks I liked including this one of two guys sitting on an couch mimicking each other. I went to an ex factory turn squat that was not far from Schindler’s factory to watch a speed/thrash/black metal gig. Most of the bands were local but a German band also played who were good but a little too 80s thrash revisionist. The band i was most keen to see, Throät Cütter, had pulled out late so I left a little early. On the walk home I came across a public performance at Rynek Główny, the market square, and sat and watched as a 9 piece band played folk style music with a grainy 8mm vision playing on a screen behind of people in long coats walking through a forrest. Some of the band members held suitcases with fairy lights on them and some of them had what looked like dolls in them but I couldn’t tell. All the audience gathered around were holding and waving mini polish flags and I held one too but when it finished I was too tired to talk to anyone about what it was so I left and walked to my room totally ignorant of what the occasion but charmed nonetheless.

Cracovia

Esattamente 2 anni fa, proprio all’inizio dell’anno, mi trovavo a Cracovia (Polonia). Ricordo che, prima di partire, quando alla classica domanda “Dove andrai per le feste?” rispondevo “In Polonia! Visiterò Cracovia, Auschwitz-Birkenau ed un altro paio di mete nei dintorni”, mi davano della matta per via delle condizioni meteorologiche che avrei trovato in quel periodo. A posteriori devo dire che, nonostante tutto, è stato uno dei viaggi che più mi è rimasto nel cuore. In particolare, mi piacerebbe ritornare a Cracovia per visitare altri luoghi importanti che non ho incluso durante il primo viaggio. Come di consueto ho cercato di integrare il programma dell’agenzia con alcune visite personali ma c’è ancora molto da vedere.

Una delle principali attrazioni della città è il Castello di Wawel che sorge sull’omonima collina sovrastante il fiume Vistola.

E’ stato sede reale per oltre 500 anni e quindi un importante centro politico e culturale della Polonia fino alla fine del XVI secolo. Ho rimandato la visita dei suoi ambienti interni perchè necessita di molto tempo ma ho potuto apprezzarne la struttura esterna ed il caratteristico drago sputafuoco.

Del complesso fa parte anche la gotica Cattedrale del Wawel dove per molti secoli è avvenuta l’incoronazione dei reali. Da ammirare in particolare la Cappella della Santa Croce, la Cappella di Sigismondo e la campana di Sigismondo.

La Città Vecchia che è stata inclusa tra i siti Patrimonio dell’Umanità dell’UNESCO sin dal 1978 ha molti luoghi interessanti: Rynek Glowny, la piazza del mercato è la più grande piazza medievale in Europa con i suoi 40.000 metri quadrati ed è da sempre il centro della vita culturale e sociale di Cracovia. Al di sotto è possibile visitare Rynek sotterranea, un museo archeologico interattivo.

La piazza è dominata dal Fondaco dei Tessuti dove avvenivano i commerci delle stoffe, dalla Torre del Municipio, dalla chiesa di Sant’Adalberto e dalla Basilica di Santa Maria, l’imponente chiesa in mattoni rossi con due torri. La torre più alta è conosciuta come “Hejnalica” ed in passato era utilizzata per indicare l'apertura e la chiusura delle porte della città ma anche per dare avviso d'incendio o d'invasione. Ancora oggi, ad ogni ora, dalla torre suona la melodia del “hejnal” in ricordo del trombettista assassinato per avvisare i suoi concittadini dell'invasione nemica. Una volta stellata, vetrate istoriate e una pala d’altare in legno scolpito sono gli elementi interni più preziosi della basilica.

La visita prosegue poi nel Kazimierz, il quartiere storico ebraico della città, dove sono state girate alcune scene del film Schindler’s List anche se tutti gli eventi narrati si svolsero in realtà a Podgorze, il ghetto che gli occupanti tedeschi crearono per trasferirvi gli ebrei.

Qui ho avuto modo di vedere la sinagoga ed il cimitero di Remuh che viene definito uno dei cimiteri del Rinascimento giudaico meglio conservati in Europa.

Decido poi di raggiungere Podgorze per visitare la Fabbrica di Schindler, l’industriale che salvò la vita a più di 1000 dei suoi operai ebrei durante la Shoah.

La vecchia fabbrica ora è stata trasformata in un moderno museo che racconta la storia di Cracovia dal 1939 al 1945.

Poco distante si trova la Piazza degli Eroi del Ghetto dove è stata creata un’installazione artistica a commemorazione dei tragici avvenimenti del marzo 1943 quando qui furono fucilati circa 1000 ebrei e moltissimi altri partirono verso i campi di concentramento.

Il mio soggiorno qui a Cracovia è terminato. Nonostante un po’ di freddo e neve devo dire che la città nel periodo natalizio è davvero magica, in particolare la bellissima Rynek Glowny con le carrozze di cavalli bianchi.

Inoltre, molto caratteristici sono i presepi polacchi artigianali che si possono trovare sia nelle chiese sia nelle vie: solitamente sono costruiti con cartone, legno e carta stagnola e sembrano dei castelli incantati ma in realtà rappresentano i monumenti storici della città. E’ una tradizione molto sentita ed ogni anno (dal 1927) si tiene un concorso al termine del quale gli esemplari più belli vengono acquistati dal Museo Storico della città.

Pies znajomej. Rynek Główny w Krakowie. lipiec 1993 r. 知り合いが連れてた犬。クラクフ中央広場にて（1993年7月撮影） たまたまこの瞬間に通りかかったせいでフィルムに定着され、24年後にSNSにUPされてしまうとは通行人も思わなかったであろう。ストリートスナップとは不思議なものだなあ。

Just a brief post today, to catch you up a little. The weather has been ridiculously beautiful this weekend, sunny and breezy and mid-fifties both days. This was in Rynek Główny yesterday afternoon; the Town Hall Tower is the building on the left, the Adam Mickiewicz  Monument is in front, and the building in between is Cloth Hall, the long building that is the centerpiece of the square.

On Friday night I went to a Shabbat dinner at the Kraków JCC. It was really beautiful and meaningful and one of the best things I’ve done here and I will talk about it more in a later post. Today I went to Schindler’s Factory, which was incredibly cool and interesting. Tomorrow I am visiting Auschwitz, about which I am not excited (is anyone excited about visiting Auschwitz, though) but which will undoubtedly be important. Honestly I’m kind of dreading it. But I have to do it.

And then on Tuesday I’m going to Warsaw! Spending four or five days there, not sure yet.
