Solo Leveling Season 2 - Arise From The Shadows- Episode 10 Review - Let The Raid Mission Commence!
To be honest, if you’re going to introduce this many characters, at least put a text box on who is who because it’s hard to keep up! I get that they do announce the characters and the cast list on social media, but what about the people who don’t have an account? How will they know who is who? On top of that, the localized Japanese version of the anime gives the Japanese hunter different names, so it’s a hassle for me to look up their actual names on the Solo Leveling wiki.
Tumblr media
The training session with the Korean and Japanese hunters was nice to see, but it’s mainly to show off some of their abilities. But like, I can sort of figure out that most of them are probably going to die and that the story wants to make it seem like the Korean S-rank Hunters are weak, but they’re probably the ones surviving the whole ordeal. The main highlight is the Jinwoo vs Goto sparring match. While the condition is that they both go all out, Goto actually does leave a cut on Jinwoo’s face, showing off his power. However, it does seem like Jinwoo was holding back, but correct me if I’m wrong. I wonder what sort of fighting they’ll show from the Japanese hunters later on.

I honestly liked that the 4th Jeju Raid Mission is gathering up all the hunters that Jinwoo previously worked with like Lee Joohee and Song Chiyul from Season 1, Go Myung-hwan and Park Heejin from the Red Gate arc, and the Strike Team from the A-Rank Dungeon arc. As an anime-only, I can tell that it’s a serious feat when everyone gathers for a big fight. It’s perfect for the climax of the second season!

However, Jinwoo doesn’t participate in the raid mission as he wants to focus on his family. People might criticize Jinwoo and the writer for this, but Jinwoo is not some American superhero with the “great power comes great responsibility” thing. His first and top priority has always been his family. Also, with his actions ever since obtaining the system, he had been questioning his humanity, so needing to be with his family is also his need of affirmation about it.
Tumblr media
Also, the ants make me feel like the author was aspired by Hunter x Hunter’s Chimera Ant arc. I mean, there’s an Ant Queen and she gives birth to a humanoid Ant King who is probably the biggest threat to the Hunters. I just hope the creators of Solo Leveling aren’t being flagged for plagiarism because of this…

Okay, I looked at the voice cast for all the Japanese hunters shown in this episode and it’s a pretty crazy cast. I mentioned Goto and Hanekawa in a previous review, so I’ll skip them. The four that participating in the sparring match: Kenzo, Kanae, Minoru and Atsushi are voiced by Tomoaki Maeno (Hak from Yona of the Dawn), Yui Ishikawa (Mikasa Ackerman from Attack on Titan), Jun Kasama (Aran Ojiro from Haikyuu) and Yoshitsugu Matsuoka (Inosuke from Demon Slayer) respectively. The ice mage with the gas mask, Kei, is voiced by Tetsuya Kakihara (Natsu Dragneel from Fairy Tail) and the hooded man, Ippei, is voiced by Kent Ito (Goro from Oshi no Ko). Tatsumi, the glasses guy with Kenzo, is voiced by Chiharu Sawashiro who is known as Miyuki Sawashiro’s younger brother. Akari, the girl with the buns, is voiced by Nene Hieda, whom I am not too familiar with. Reiji, the man with the brown hair and the vice leader of the Japanese hunters is voiced by Yuya Uchida (Naoshi Usui from My Happy Marriage). The Ant Queen also got a well-known voice actress as Noriko Hidaka (Akane Tendo from Ranma 1/2). A lot of these characters have such big-named voice actors and the fact that they were casted for such minor roles means that Solo Leveling is obviously a big deal in terms of popularity. Like, would the production staff go out of their way to cast like seven big names if this anime wasn’t so popular?

Fun fact: this episode aired on March 8, which is Sung Jinwoo’s birthday! Also a crazy way to end an episode on the MC’s birthday by having the episode end on that bloody cliffhanger. I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen! Let me know your thoughts about this episode!

Solo Leveling Season 2 -Arise From The Shadows- Episode 11 Review - Off With Their Heads
I just learned that his name is not Min Byung-gyu (민병규), but it’s Min Byung-gu (민병구). I misread it the entire time. I think it’s because Byung-gyu is a more common Korean name than Byung-gu, so I had assumed it was the former rather than the latter.
Tumblr media
Anyways, this was certainly a mind-blowing episode in that Jinwoo is not the focus! He only shows up at the very end. The focus goes to the S-Ranked Hunters, specifically the Korean ones, in order to see what they can do. I honestly liked their dynamic! They fight like an RPG group! Cha Hae-In is the warrior; Baek Yoonho is the monk/fighter; Ma Dongwook is the tank specializing in defense; Choi Jong-in is the black mage; Lim Tae-gyu is the archer/long-ranged fighter; Min Byung-gu is the white mage. Had Jinwoo tagged along with the group, he’d be the thief/assassin. It’s really interesting to see that while Solo Leveling’s world isn’t a game, but it does function like one since it has typical MMORPG systems and what not. From an anime-only standpoint, they’re no slouches in battle. They easily triumph the ants and defeat the Queen, but because they used up a lot of energy in those fights, the Ant King clobbered them so bad.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
To be fair, the Ant King is also super OP for a last-minute raid boss. He needs to be that foe that Jinwoo needs to beat because of the MC privileges. The Ant King is pretty creepy, thought. It’s the most humanoid of the bunch; it sort of reminds me of Stingmon from Digimon Adventures 02. On top of that, he can retain the memories of whoever he consumes. Since he ate the Queen and saw that the S-ranked Hunters were the ones who killed her, he started obliterating them, starting from the one who dealt the last blow, Hae-in. The fact that the only Korean S-rank Hunter he killed was Byung-gu showed how much of a threat he is; this ant killed a majority of the Japanese S-ranked Hunters. I wonder if it started to talk once it ate Byung-gu…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Man, I feel so bad for Byung-gu. The guy retired, but decided to show up last minute to the raid. He could’ve been safe, but maybe it was his pride that made it enlist. Heck, Joohee also retired, but she also came back for this raid. I have to say, Byung-gu is by far the strongest healer in the story. The man can do more than just heal injuries and recover lost limbs; he can camouflage himself so that he won’t have to be constantly protected and that he can buff his allies. I don’t remember if other healers in the story were able to buff. Anyways, the fact that the Ant King knew to shoot the medic first shows that he’s serious business—coincidentally, Akari was a healer and she was the first to die too. It’s because Byung-gu showed up last minute that Jinwoo couldn’t put a shadow in him. That’s a clever detail that foreshadowed his death.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It turns out that the Japanese Hunters Association is run by a Japanese dude who looks like Adolf Hitler; his named is Matsumoto. Anyways, it seems that their main plan was to weaken the Korean Hunters Association so that the Japanese can take the glory. I wonder how he’ll react when he learns that most of the S-rank casualties are the Japanese. The strongest Japanese Hunter, Goto, is gonna get decimated by the Ant King…
Tumblr media
The casting for this anime is seriously Demon Slayer level. On top of having high quality voice actors be random soldiers who’s purpose is to die to a great villain (sort of how Muzan got rid of his Lower Moons who were voiced by high quality voice actors), the Ant King is voiced by none other than Akira Ishida who has stabbed someone in the gut yet again. Ishida already voices Akaza who is known for being a gut-stabber and also has a reputation for voicing suspicious men you should not trust. Ant King is both of them. Another crazy casting is having Naoya Uchida voice Matsumoto. The man’s a villain and Uchida voiced freaking Madara Uchiha from Naruto. A-1 is really flexing their casting budget…
Tumblr media
Jinwoo will now join the fight. You might be wondering why he didn’t join from the start; it’s because he prioritizes family. Also, he came late because the broadcast was delayed, according to sources I found on social media. Speaking of which, the cameraman having no wounds on him is pretty much an amazing feat in itself. Let me know your thoughts on this episode!
