Well, Well, Well, Well, Well, Well, Well, Well, Well, Well, Well, Well, Well, Well, Well, Well, Well...look who’s here
it’s me!
and also
Him
Tumblr media
Alright so there’s a lot of stuff ive been thinking about S9, some of it good some of it bad, but i told @siriusmistake (wink ;)) that i had some strong feelings about Van Ark’s presence in the plot so this post is sponsored by them and consists on me flailing about stuff lol Also this is long oops here we go
1. Van Ark is alive Reveal
If you’ve been around long enough, you’ll know i’ve always suspected this so just to get it out of the way: i knew it
Tumblr media
Many of us did to be fair. Now let me tell you a story “fenn im not here for a history lesson” Well aren’t you.
2. A History of Belief
This is the part where i talk about all the clues and theories about Vana Ark bein alive, you can skip it if you wanna lol. Back in...S5 there was not one but TWO occasions where i thought there would be a “van ark is alive” reveal. Once, in M3 (yes i looked it up) when we infiltrate Abel the first time and there is a moment we talk to Lobatse where we go into one hut and it’s full of cryogenic freezers and i thought “that’s it, here he is”. Same happened when we infiltrated abel as a spy and Sigrid took us to see the cryofreezers.
Why did i think that? My reasoning was that 1) Unless we see someone’s body we can’t really be sure they’re not dead (hello paula, hello sarah, hello simon, hello p-, you get the gist). 2) Sure, we hit him with a rocket launcher; but then again we did too on our first day and we’re fine.
Tumblr media
Mostly. I theorized that maybe we damaged him enough to warrant him a few years out of the game. We got told that New Canton took care of the body but, at the time, Sigrid hadn’t showed her true colors yet so it would have been easy for her to just move things around to get it for herself and put him in cryo. Then S7 gave me a red herring by making me think, for the space of a single afternoon, that there was a possibility that Sage was Van Ark. I was real on the fence with this one because i saw the flaws in my theory but also. Didn’t regeneration change Peter’s face just enough not to look immediately recognizable? Was Sage Van Ark faking a nice attitude? Seemed a bit too crazy, but also someone compared van ark, dr.tomorrow and sage together.
Tumblr media
Still, it felt too crazy. Right? ...RIght??? And to quote myself “I don’t trust van ark to know how to even fake how to be useful and kind to society and create ways to make a better community and be sensitive to other’s emotions for as long as Sage has been doing it. He can’t be that good an actor. the part where he might be alive and got a new face is not that crazy though.” So true past me, so true. Still, we did get something juicy in S7M25-26 that gave us a clue to Van Ark being alive, besides other things. We go with Maxine to a facility where Sigrid had created some nanotech capable of nullifying the regeneration abilities, in case she needed them to take care of Van Ark. True love right there fellas. HOWEVER, the nanites were in “regeneration mode”. Hmmm well isn’t that interesting. Obviously it gives us a clue that all the above could be true. That Sigrid got Van ark’s body and tried to speed up his regeneration. Now in retrospect it has more connotations still. More on that later.
Also in S8 sam goes ahead and drops one big “well we never did see his body” so
Tumblr media
3. He’s Alive! So what.
Amelia: quite a shoker huh! Every one of us who has been expecting him to show his ugly ass at any moment: this bitch again huh So, he’s alive. Not that much of a surprise, considering. Still, the reveal comes around and i can’t help but think that the thing i care about most is how they’re going to pull this off. Van ark being alive by itself is of not much consequence to me anymore as plot device. Bringing a big baddie back - and this is the very first Big Baddie himself- it’s a risky thing to do. Is it the right thing to do? Maybe, if done properly. Or in a way i like lol. And honestly s2s hasn’t given me a lot of confidence when it comes to handling old and sensitive character related topics in  S9P1 (looking at you, sam’s-being-opened-up-without-consent-and-injected-with-another-being thing and no one batting an eye about it. Especially not Five who def has no traumatic experiences related to medical torture and being injected people in their head, no sir). So yeah, it’s a risk, and it’s an old baddie anyway, we’ve killed him once already, we know his whole shebang already, he’s old news.
Tumblr media
Indeed, Leslie, THE DRAMA. His reappearance is important to me, for the most part, because it’s bound to unbury some very angsty, dramatic little feelings on any Abel character that’s had to deal with him before. Especially Peter. Five too but that’s headcanon territory.
I mean it’s almost fine when we were in the UK. Terrible, sure, but feels...distant enough? We suspected this might happen, we just have to go there, kill him again, deal with whatever has to be dealt with and come back. Easy peasy yeah? Five’s used to this. There’s a little knot in their stomach and kind of a guilty giddiness to get moving already. They think it might have been born out of necessity, because if you dread whatever might happen every time you go out on an (dangerous, possibly deadly, possibly traumatic) “adventure” you’re bound to end up dead. And Van Ark just feels so far away now. The closer we get to scorpion base - and to Van Ark- the tighter the knot in their stomach gets. The closer we get to him the realer it feels, the easier it is to feel old rage bubble to the surface. They look at the others and have to wonder what they feel. In the silence of the desert night they feel their fingers twitch and the scenarios where they meet him more and more real. In the silence of the desert night, the distant gidiness becomes an ugly kind of excitement,  mixed with dread and anger when they think how killing him again might feel and their fingers twitch. For good this time. And, if they get to Van Ark quick enough, they can stop Peter from doing something stupid. They look at Peter, and worry. Peter who’s been wrecked by guilt for for years, Peter who’s been suicidal for years, Peter who only now, very recently, has started to want to get better, to make small steps towards doing so. Peter who has a fucking burn cube sewed on his chest. Peter who’s already died twice because of all this shit. It could help Peter move on, Five knows that. For him to see how much he’s changed, how far his come, to look at the old fucker in the face and tell him to go fuck himself. However they’d rather not risk it. They’ rather not end up in a situation where Peter feels he has no choice. He’s been doing well lately, no need for Van Ark to fuck it all that up. They look at Janine and wonder if she’s thought the same, or if she just refuses to even think it at all while dealing with her grief over Tom to even consider the scenario of losing someone else she cares about. (Might have gotten excited here didn’t expect that lol Also i did a little post about five changing classes in dnd to a Paladin while making this post and ooohhh because i went to read about paladins and about how they’re all about protecting the innocent and delivering justice, and yes that is a generally very Five thing but also found this little gem “[...] Or are you an embittered loner sworn to take vengeance on those who have done great evil, sent as an angel of death by the gods or driven by your need for revenge?“ and isn’t this DELICIOUS. Especially after all that nonsense i just wrote up there) (Also like that moment we learn that Peter has a burn cube sewed up, i swear to GOD s2s you better fucking not.).
Tumblr media
4. Ernie
Ok So. first time we see Van Ark he’s behind a door, unconcious and hooked ona  machine and Bakari tells us he’s not in charge of anything, he’s one of the experiments. Obviously the first thing that crosses my mind is both:
Tumblr media
and
Tumblr media
Janine said no :( She did say we had to get to the uk first and then come back deal with him but how would be even do that. Two birds one stone is what i’m saying. But then we actually meet the guy and oh boy.
5. M15-16
1) “ERNEST VAN ARK: Hello there. Hello! So thrilled to meet you. Do shake my hand. I’m Ernest, by name and by nature. [chuckles] Sorry, my little joke. Ernie Van Ark at your service… is nobody going to shake?”
By now i was real worried because...i really don’t think i’d enjoy a redemtion arc for this character. Amnesia? Not unless he goes right back to being a villain afterwards. This guy chose all the bad things he did with 0 guilt, it would rightly piss me off to see anyone forgive him just becasue “oh he’s helping now”. Not after everything that happened. It’s still a very funny scenario though dsfsdf just the abel crew infiltrating this base, scared shitless because this old nemesis is going to recognize us and welp no he doesn’t??? and he’s looking young?? and hes kinda nice???
Tumblr media
 2) “JANINE DE LUCA: You look… young.”
i wonder what that’s about. I think that this is a mix bewteen him being actually younger and also like. We’re all 8 years older. My Five was 26, now they’re 34 it’s been a long-ass time. Guillemete says he’s middle aged so he could be somthing like 45-55? I’ve always guessed him to be early 60′s in S2 so it should be a big enough difference for us to be like “WOAH he looks REALLY YOUNG” so im going to say Earnie looks to be in his early/mid 40′s.
3) “ERNEST VAN ARK: [...] when they caught wind of his immortality… well, I’m told he had a mishap with a rocket launcher.”
Tumblr media
4) ERNEST VAN ARK: “A few scrapings from him ended up on the black market, a little pink and gray matter.Red Scorpion Base purchased them, knew they’d be useful. The cells were inert. The base kickstarted the regeneration process, got them to sort of regrow into me. Took some work, but here I am, all his intellect, none of his memories. It’s my regeneration they want to study, of course.”
Ok so this is a lot of info in one place and also puts thoughts in my head about future etc. After a year since this i’ve had time to come down from feeling kinda pissed but let me tell you, by this point both me and my Five were immenseley frustrated. For many reasons. The main one being the “i don’t know if s2s can pull this off seeing how things have gone”. The “he’s not the original and i can’t confront him the way i pictured” is frustrating but i think it can be interesting precisely because it challenges the characters expectations and introduces a different kind of tension.
From a character standpoint my Five¡s about to lose it. They’ve been on edge the whole way here and i’ts been getting worse. The recent situation with sam has left them wondering if they can feel safe around their own friends, if they should cut away from Abel, at least for a while if not longer, when all this is over. And then this guy. This guy who looks and sounds like Van ark but isn’t him in theory but has the potential to be anyway and how DARE HE NOT REMEMBER WHAT HE’S DONE.
And that’s the most fun about this situation for me if we are to keep in close contact with Ernie. All those frustrated feelings no one can properly take out on him because he’s not the original van ark so he technically hasn’t done all those terrible things but god his stupid face is right there and is bringing all of it out anyway.
And besides, he could be faking it. Ernie sounds suspiciouly like the person Van Ark was faking to be when we met him the first time (i don’t think this is the case though tbh) and I imagine Five remembers his warning right before they blew him up. ”PROFESSOR VAN ARK: [static] Runner Five, I do hope you can hear me. I’m broadcasting on a wide band of frequencies just to say – I know your face, I know your name. I do not forget, and I do not forgive. I will come and find you. When you least expect it, I am going to destroy you.”
And even if he wasn’t faking there’s other matters too. This is one of those big “people can change/nature vrs nurture/ etc kind of deals right? Sure this isn’t the original van ark, but he has been formed from the same brain. A man that chose eugenics as his core belief and did genocide, torture and murder about it. The potential for him to choose it again is always there and it makes me nervous to have him around, and leaving him at Red Scorpion Base also makes me nervous because even as an experiment, he’s dangerous. His regenerative abilities are dangerous in the wrong hands. Probably the panagea is one of the things that have been made thanks to it but you know how this kinda things goes: taking the thing and using it to make weapons and super soldiers and the like, as the Guillemete comments here:
“GUILLEMETTE FELIS: [...] Genetic material from Ernie was used to treat a life-threatening injury Henderson suffered some months ago. The results were… dramatic. Your quarry is no ordinary soldier. His endurance is enormous, but his personality, unstable. You will know what I refer to. I believe your own Sven “Psycho” Mountback was treated with a similar but less advanced treatment in Poland several years ago, leading to his current… psychological situation.”
So not the current treatments are unstable, makes you think how can Bakari be so sure the panagea works at all. Also wtf are they doing in Poland.
5) “ERNEST VAN ARK: No no, nothing like that. I always wanted to visit England. I don’t suppose you met a politician named Sigrid? I’m told we were in love. It sounds terribly romantic.”
Tumblr media
WHY WOULD THIS BE RELEVANT SDFSDFD Earnest says that Red Scorpion Base (or their top dog i guess) got a hold of the flesh and kickstarted the regeneration process (and i have some STUFF Ive been thinking about when it comes to that), so it sounds like he’s spent whatever concious life he’s had in Red Scorpion Base mostly under supervision, probably. Make sure the investment doesn’t run away. How do you feel about that Ernie. I feel like this guy is mostly “the research here is v important and complicated and i am part of it all so im not really going to think about the fact that i am a piece of property because why would I bother” I justc an’t believe we’re not going to see more of him you know? S2S can’t just present us with this guy and then be like “ok thats all you’re going to see of him ever”, wouldn’t make sense. Also what is this research? We just get that one sentence and i’m already like hmmmm that’s weird and suspicious”.
I imagine that once he became fully concious he must have had questions about himself but it doesn’t sound like he was given too many details. “A misshap with a rocket launcher” doesn’t really tell us whether he knows he was murdered or not, but “im told we were in love it sounds terribly romantic :)” we can tell he doesn’t know Sigrid’s dead and also that whoever told him that either didn’t know the details of their relationship, or did and just didn’t tell him because why would they tbh. SOunds like he was told somethign among the lines of "You were a v smart scientist who lived in the far-away land of the uk, working towards a big cure to save humanity (that's how you got your regeneration powers!) and you and the prime minister were in love :o) And then there was an accident/some terrible spies shot you with a rocket launcher "
Tumblr media
Also SDFSDF bless Peter for being like “im gonna kill him” right away when we come across Ernie in the greenhouse like YES THATS WHAT I WAS SAYING!! Peter your brain is huge and so very wrinkly I knew you’d be with me on that one.
I also understand Ernie calling for help, it’s the smart thing to do and i just Love the idea that from his point of view we’re obviously the bad guys. I mean he’s been told we’re spies, to hide away, and now we’re talking about killing him right in front of him sdfsdfs
I just want so badly to bully him. I want to be forced to take him with us and i want his presence to make everyone high strung and uncomfortable and terribly snipy and the whole time he has no idea why everyone hates his guts so badly. Does he even know that the zombie apocalypse was partly his fault? I bet not. I want to tell him we killed him and also his terrible fascist wife. I just think it’d be neat.
6. THEORIES
OKAY so like when i was making up theories about what could happen with Van Ark i remembered something about S7M25-26. Upon reading the transcripts i realized a couple things.
At the time, we had a wriggling hand we cut from a zombie that had bitten Peter and gotten his regeneration abilities. Veronica guided us to a water treatment plant where Sigrid kept a nanotech machine capable of nullifying Van Ark’s regeneration in case she needed to neutralize him at some point, so we set off there to see if it worked on the P-Hand and maybe even be able to use that technology to help Peter lose his so that he felt more like a person, less like a monster who can put everyone he loves i danger. Feelings that are still relevant seeing as we haven’t tried a treatment on him yet (most of the research was destroyed but i think Sage had some stuff too??, i need to check a bunch of stuff to know what happened with this whole thing exacly). And also Ernie, who is also a danger. It will be interesting to see what’s his opinion on his regeneration.
In any case, when we get there we have a terrible misshap and the hand starts growing fast as hell instead of dying.
“ VERONICA MCSHELL: It appears Sigrid’s treatments stimulated growth.”
Well. Isn¡t THAT interesting. Peviously I thought was that Van Ark's body in general might not have been extensiveley damaged, and that Sigrid had gotten it and worked to save his life. In Red Scorpion Base we are told that "A few scrapings from him ended up on the black market, a little pink and gray matter" so i thought that maybe he had been blown into pieces. But now i’m thinking that there is a couple possibilities. Veronica at some point says that sigrid threw failed experiments to an automated furnace. Makes you think.
Clones. Maybe there wasn’t enough of Van Ark’s original body to regenerate, so Sigrid started experimenting with unknown degrees of success and burnt off the failures in the furnace.
Tumblr media
We don’t know how many failures there might have been or how many successes. I can’t imgine she’d make more that one if she succeded, but there’s no way to tell. It could be that she herself sold the kickstarted flesh to Red Scorpion Boss although I don’t really see Sigrid doing that with Van Ark though but then again, who knows lol. There’s also the possibility that someone else found the research/got a hold of the pieces of Van Ark she hadn’t used and has been selling them around, after all how did that flesh end up in the black market? It0s just flesh from a dead man, no reason for it to be there unless you know exacly what it is so whoever put it in the market knew exacly what they were selling. If there’s enough bits of van ark to go around, maybe that’s what’s going on in Poland? Who do i see taking bits of van ark, kickstarting their regeneration and selling either the flesh or even clones to the highest bidder? Could be anyone. Could be Valmont, seeing as he has plenty of contacts, could be someone new. I don’t think he’s the top dog at Red Skull base necessarily but i don’t discard it. Whoever it is they obviously recognize us and know what we’re all about and they know to be weary of us. Either our reputation in the uk has reached other countries or this is someone who has been to the uk/we’ve dealt with one-on-one.
Tumblr media
Guess we’ll see what happens.

TWD 11x03: Hunted - Details
Okay, let's talk details. At the beginning, nearly everyone gets hurt and then gets separated.
***As always, spoilers abound below for episode 11x03: Hunted. Don’t read until you’ve watched!***
I noticed that in the opening credits, we now see the two rows of hanging bodies to represent the Reapers.
Tumblr media
Maggie:
Elijah tries to help Maggie but is yanked backward and disappears. We don’t see him the rest of the episode. I really hope he’s okay. ☹
Tumblr media
When Maggie is walking around alone, we see a car with an open door that's emphasized. It reminds me very much of this shot from 5x09.
Tumblr media
@wdway also noticed some chevron symbols in the parking lot. (Chevron Theory)
She passes the dumpster before she actually gets into the mall building. That might be called back to Glenn. She also uses glass alcohol bottles as a warning system. I'm sure I don't have to explain the parallels there.
Tumblr media
There's definitely a rat thing going on here, which is important because of 10x21, but I can tell you that we see (hear) it in episode 11x04 as well. I just noticed the subtitles tell us that there are rats squeaking quite a lot. After finding Negan and Alden, Negan pushes for Alden to be left behind. He doesn’t like being on the road. He says the plan is bad and unsafe.
Then they hear screaming and run toward Agatha. Duncan is hurt and clearly not going to make it. He says, "We were good. We were lucky." Both Beth lines. Maggie puts him down after promising to get Agatha home.
Tumblr media
Now, that’s interesting to me. I said yesterday that we’re seeing a replay of Beth through many of these story lines, and I focused on Alden as a proxy. But I think Agatha is one, too. Just the fact that they talk about getting her “home,” makes her a proxy. Meanwhile, she doesn’t make it “home.” She’s bitten by a walker and left behind…in a mob of walkers. This is also where Negan drags Maggie away while she screams, “no!” Maybe indicative of her emotional response (not to mention her screaming in the parking lot of Grady) over losing Beth?
Tumblr media
Jumping back a bit, before Agatha’s death, Maggie’s group travels through the woods. Negan and Maggie have an interesting exchange. Negan says of himself, "people change." Maggie says that no they don't.
So once again, it's called back to Beth dialogue, but Maggie is specifically harboring a belief that was the opposite of Beth's. That people don't and can't change. It's obvious that Maggie is on a very destructive path right now. She doesn’t really have faith in people, or faith that everything will work out okay. We can't be sure where this is going, but it's interesting. As I've said before, I'm sure this attitude of hers will probably end up causing drama down the road.
Tumblr media
They happen upon a burnt walker that's tied to a tree with the sign that says Judas over his head. This super interesting. I know I have a lot of asks about this in my inbox. My first reaction is that we can tie it to the burnt walkers from 6x06, which was bursting with Beth symbolism. Since it’s obviously the CRM who was responsible for those burnt walkers, you have to wonder if there's a CRM tie here.
We might also be able to tie this to the Governor’s episodes in 4a, where he found several decapitated corpses wearing military attire that also had signs near them like ‘murderer’ and ‘rapist.’ If nothing else, this shows that someone in the area is actually burning people for betrayal and labeling them as Judas. Doesn't exactly bode well for our group. But we don't know whether this was the Reapers or somebody else.
***Update: I wrote most of this post before seeing episode 11x04. I still think we can tie this burnt walker thematically to 6x06 and the CRM, but in terms of what is literally happening in this season, let’s just say this burnt walker will make a lot more sense after watching 11x04. I don’t want to give spoilers beyond that.***
Tumblr media
Just before Maggie's group reaches the chapel they end up leaving Alden at, they pass green car. I don't think it's a Gremlin, like the one we saw in 7x05, but it's the same shade of green.
Tumblr media
And of course, we see the cross outside the church. Beth was wearing a cross bracelet in the hallway of Grady when she was shot. There are plenty of holes in the roof of the church (Hole in the Roof Theory.) At one point, Alden even says, "I'm dead weight." That was the name of 4x07, the Governor episode where they found the decapitated corpses.
At the chapel, we caught an interesting snippet of dialogue from Negan. He tells Maggie “the sun is going down” and that she’ll have to make a decision. We’ve always thought Beth would return with a dawn theme, which might mean literally that we’ll see her with a sunrise or something. So, it made me wonder if the “night” will be them fighting the conflict with the Reapers and then will return with the new “dawn.” Something like that. It might be literal or just thematic. We’ll just have to wait and see, though.
Tumblr media
Maggie finally agrees to leave him behind, but she struggles with it mightily. They even have this really on the nose line where she says, "you better be here when I come back." And he answers, "you better come back." Think about how that would relate to Beth's arc.
Tumblr media
Carol:
We see Carol and Kelly returning to Alexandria together. They have this whole thing where Magna thinks Carol is giving Kelly falls hope and wants her stop.
Tumblr media
They also seem to be setting up something with Carol and Aaron. I'm not sure what it is. They're kind of at odds in this episode because he wants her to help with the walls and she wants to go track the horses. I thought it was interesting that Angela Kang, during the Inside Look bit, went out of her way to say that Carol and Aaron are not enemies. They're still good friends but they have different ideas about how to deal with the current crisis. I feel like they're setting up an arc with the two of them together.
Tumblr media
When Carol was out looking for the horses, she finds Rosita. Rosita is scavenging MUSHROOMS. This part was super interesting because Carol tells her not to pick a certain type of mushroom unless she accidentally wants to make baby cocoa high for about a week. This is meant to be a joke, but it fits into the hallucination theory. I've noticed several mushroom mentions throughout the seasons. It’s an ongoing theme that I think ties into things not being as they seem, or a character to misunderstands or is deceived by something.
As I told my fellow theorists, I sat and thought about this for a minute. It's a little bit odd to me that they included Rosita’s response. When Carol says the mushrooms will make them high, Rosita answers, "yeah, but only for about a week, right?" It's meant to be a funny of course, and it is, but why put in a timeframe for the hallucination?
Tumblr media
The only thing I can think of is that maybe it's a hint that the hallucinations or misconceptions people have been laboring under are about to fall away. That includes Daryl and Leah, but we can also extend it to Beth. If she lived, as we think she did, and TF think she died, then their belief in her death fits into the hallucination theory. Just thought that was interesting.
Rosita joins Carol in searching for the horses. At one point, she tells Carol about some dreams she's been having. (Kind of interesting to mention hallucinatory mushrooms and then talk about significant dreams, no?) Apparently, she's been dreaming about Abraham. She says he's trying to tell her something, something she supposed to do, something about Alexandria. But she can't actually hear what he's saying. (Hear no evil.) And just when she gets close enough to hear him in the dream, he gets shot in the head.
Tumblr media
This is interesting on so many levels. First of all, dreams. We had the episode 6x12 of FTWD, titles, In Dreams. Abraham is a man Rosita once loved, and has lost. Most obviously, Abraham didn't die of a gunshot to the head. He died when Negan killed him. So, it feels like an excuse to mention someone being shot in the head. And of course Abraham was often a proxy to Beth. I’m definitely side eyeing this.
Tumblr media
The other thing about this is that I've been noticing for a while that they have some big arc for Rosita coming up. They’ve done several sequences where she’s searching for weapons but is unable to find them for a time. She usually eventually finds them and uses them to somehow save the day or turn the tide of the conflict.
We saw this in S7, and the weapon she found was Dwight, who defected and helped them win the war. We saw it during the warehouse sequence in S8 where she and Michonne were trying to stop the singing truck from going to the Sanctuary, and Rosita ended up with the rocket launcher. It’s a pattern that’s been happening for a while. I don't know how this dream of Abraham ties into that, but I’m wondering if this arc they’ve foreshadowed for several seasons is about to start playing out.
I don’t have a whole lot more to say about Carol tracking the horses, as I went over the most important stuff yesterday. I'm assuming that in this episode, that Kelly is equating the dead horses with Connie, and that's what upsets her so much.
Tumblr media
After we see the horse run away from them, Kelly says, “fourth time’s the charm,” which means that was the third time they’d attempted it. (Rule of Threes).
When they get back to Alexandria, Carol cuts one of the horse’s throats to slaughter it for food. Aaron comes to help her, and he looks at her very compassionately.
Tumblr media
This is also where we get the shot from inside the church with the broken window. We see Kelly come out and hug Magna, but then still go with Carol. Just really interesting symbolism there about her not giving up hope of finding her sister. I can't help but wonder if Kelly will go with Carol to look for Connie and end up finding Beth. That would be super interesting.
It also reminded me of something that happened during S9. There was an episode where Kelly got lost in the woods and Daryl and Connie went to find her. They had this really weird before-the-opening-credits sequence where we saw what was clearly a Whisperer, rather than a normal walker, coming up behind Kelly and reaching out for her, as though she was about to get kidnapped or taken prisoner. But that didn’t actually happen.
Tumblr media
When Daryl and Connie find her, she's on her own in the woods and just dehydrated. There's definitely hallucination quality to that sequence, but I’ve always suspected it was a foreshadow of something in the future. Anyway, this is just conjecture and I'm just rambling, but these are some of the thoughts I had while watching the episode.
The kids:
There couple of charming scenes of all the kids playing together. We see them play a card game—Slap Jack, I think—at the kitchen table. Many people have noticed that this kitchen table looks a lot like the one in Alone that we saw in the funeral home. And no, it’s not the same. It doesn’t have a diamond on it, but the material and pattern look similar. Which is kind of interesting.
Tumblr media
Actually, to me, the design looks a little reminiscent of the All-Seeing Eye, which is often seen on paper currency. So, it could be part of that theme.
Most of these are just cute scenes and Angela Kang says that part of the reason for them is that they wanted to have Judith and Herschel interact a little bit. People have also pointed out to me that when Herschel asks if any of them have ever been on the road like he was with Maggie, Judith says no, “Not like that.” Actually, she has been, but she was just too little to remember it. But this may have been a subtle reminder of 5x12.
Tumblr media
Herschel is clearly worried about his mom and the adults who keep leaving. Judith does her best to console him. Not sure what to make of these conversations in terms of what they foreshadow. Maybe nothing. But I did enjoy watching the scenes.
Father Gabriel:
The man Gabriel kills is named Nichols. (Got that from the subtitles.) We hear him reciting the Lord's prayer as Gabe approaches. I also noticed that his shoes are not on. They are on the ground on the other side of the tree from where he’s sitting. Which might be part of the Lost Shoe/Foot symbolism.
Tumblr media
He has an arrow in his stomach (it looks like Daryl’s) and he’s bleeding from the neck. The neck wounds are interesting because Father Gabriel got one too. It's almost as if these two mirror one another.
Tumblr media
I mentioned this yesterday, but Gabriel says, "God is not here anymore." Just wanted to mention it again because it will be important to remember for next week when we get into 11x04.
Okay, I think that's all I have in terms of details. Anything I missed?

15x06: Castiel
Is there anything more beautiful than turning points for a character? I don’t think there is. Cas has had a few of them throughout his journey (of course all of TFW have) but this episode he comes across a most likely enormous one, because this episode actually manifests his self-liberation in no uncertain terms, and given how far along we’ve gotten down the line with his progression, I’m thinking it’s most likely to stick.
It’s all about identity, right? Even this turning point that I’m so mysteriously hinting at. I’ll get to that.
Let’s take a look at the lay of the land this episode and it’ll bring us to why this turning point feels like it is shaking the very foundations of Cas’ core character traits and, hopefully, bringing about that needed change in the process.
Here’s the thing. When he was cast down from Heaven and turned human by Metatron stealing his grace, Cas was lost and was killed and then he was brought home to the Bunker only to be thrown out again, and so he named himself Steve and took a job at a Gas ‘n Sip because he couldn’t drape himself in the flag of Heaven anymore.
As a human, adrift and alone, he did the only thing he could think to do: he mimicked human everyday life. Not because he wanted to, but because he had to. He could see no other choice.
Until he called Dean to tell him about a case in the town where he’d settled (using settled loosely here since Cas was basically squatting at that same Gas ‘n Sip because he didn’t have a home of his own btw) and Dean showed up and reminded Cas what is at his core: to help. And that this desire to help is there even if he’s scared of dying, because that is what gives him a sense of purpose. (which is why he threw himself into that human everyday life to begin with: in search of purpose)
After Dean drove off in 9x06, telling Cas to live his life, Cas made a decision, for himself, to get back into hunting. To insert himself back into TFW, whether Dean wanted him there or not.
This was an enormous turning point for him, because for the first time he truly considered what he wanted for himself, and he went after it without hesitation.
Which was then promptly followed by Cas seeing no other choice but to swallow Theo’s grace and get his powers back, readying himself for the war that most surely was heading their way, because how could he be of service, of help, to the brothers and to the world without his powers?
Right? Right.
Now then, in 15x06 we get Cas in a deep state of identity confusion.
This is most clearly given to us through the name he chooses for himself.
Firstly, Clarence is a beautiful callback to Meg and perhaps that’s all it’s meant to be, but it’s also tying in with those early days that lay the foundation for the identity confusion Cas is still grappling with. So it’s interesting to me that he’d use it now, when he should be moving on, know what I mean?
And yeah, that brings us to the second Clarence, which is a character name from True Romance where the character Clarence Worley is played by Christian Slater and Worley is a posturing, bi-coded renegade of a male and has a lot of Dean in him (and I’m headcanoning that Dean has initiated Cas to the wonders of True Romance and done so fairly hardcore) so for Cas to actually, literally, name himself after a Dean-esque character is delightfully poignant.
Because it serves to underline how Cas is still not acting from a place that is based in having enough perspective on himself that he’s aware of what he wants, but rather we’re given to understand, in no uncertain terms, that he left the Bunker, pondered what to do and instead of considering what he’d do, he thought: What would Dean do?
And Dean, to relax and regroup and get away, would go fishing.
So, essentially, Cas is still in mimic mode.
Only this time he wasn’t told he had to leave the Bunker and what he deep down has always thought of as home and family and safety, even if he hasn’t felt like he truly belongs there: this time he chose to go.
And, this time, yes, he goes into mimic mode because he’s at a loss of what exactly he’s supposed to do now, but when a case presents itself, he doesn’t call Dean, he goes into hunter mode and leaves the mimicking behind, leaning on his own knowledge and understanding of what hunting down a monster entails, knowledge and understanding he’s accrued over his years of inadvertent training.
Granted he’s not human and he’s not risking his life the way he would’ve been back in S9 -- which was the reason (well, one of them, if you want to read the subtext as being that he genuinely wanted to see Dean and he hoped Dean would come look him up) he called Dean -- but he’s not fully fledged, his powers are failing him, and he doesn’t know what that means or what it will mean for him in the long run.
What is evident is that he doesn’t need his powers to do his job and do it well. He correctly identifies the monster as a djinn and locates what is evidently its lair without using anything but power of persuasion and research skills.
I could - over-zealous that I get at the mere prospect - read all this as meaning that we’re getting foreshadowing for how Cas doesn’t need his powers to live his life. Actually, it feels a little more like Cas’ powers are hampering his ability to live his life this episode, as the pastime that relaxes Dean Humanity Winchester does nothing to relax Cas-Still Angelic and thus Tied to Heaven-tiel. But the powers do save him, and they do allow him to do what is at his core: help. He heals Caleb, even though it takes a lot out of him
The taking a lot might be foreshadowing that his powers are diminishing to the point of soon not being there at all, or it might be an underlining of how we should root for him being powered up again, so that the moment he is will feel truly gratifying, because we’ve witnessed the struggle.
The gunshot wounds to his chest might be a highlighter for how he still sees himself as ‘thing’ and always expects to be able to heal himself, which could be a plant for how, if he becomes human, bullets flying at his head will carry a completely different meaning because he’s always been someone who absorbs such situations without even really blinking at them (like how he didn’t even flinch when Ketch blew up that car with the grenade launcher back in S12), or it could be another underlining of Powers=Good because they allow him to do what this entire episode pushes for him to do: stand up to authority.
And so we land in the-->
Turning Point
Which is Cas standing up to authority and, if you look at the subtextual implications, in so doing, breaking away from how he’s related himself to Dean for a whole lot of their joint arc, especially during the latter half of it.
This turning point is enormous for his individual arc: letting go of his proclivity for making choices based in servitude to the greater good (manifested in God and then in Dean) (his servitude always skewed since he should be making his choices based in his own sense of morality) (not trying to do what he thinks someone else wants him to do) and starting to make choices based in his own knowledge and understanding of himself and his place in the world.
And this newfound self-insight could potentially hopefully have an enormous impact on how he relates himself to Dean moving forward.
Because instead of this -->
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Leading to this -->
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ending in this -->
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We’ll get Cas behaving based in this -->
Tumblr media
And the parallels here are rich as well, btw. They’re not as violent as they look, at least not the way I see it, because not only is the possible S8 callback (it’s what I got in my head anyway) a tie-back to a moment where Cas bowing to authority brought about emotional trauma, which led to him standing up to said authority, but on top of this, Dean as authority figure isn’t working anymore.
Dean as role model, Dean as compass, Dean as charge and the reason Cas uses for why he’s even on Earth isn’t holding up anymore. It hasn’t for a long time now. And in this moment Cas not only knows it, but I would say he accepts the truth of it.
The sheriff is a toxic masculinity representative in the most classic sense and it’s beautiful how Cas uses the lines that Miriam threw at Dean in 13x01, almost to underline the parallels here, but also to tell us how little Cas is ready to bow down to this type of power.
As such, it’s not just a parallel to Dean, but to Chuck as well, which is why the turning point is so layered and carries so much weight: this moment is Cas telling a representative of what God now is in the narrative (and granted always has been) this his sense of entitlement, that his belief that he deserves his position and that he should be worshipped simply because he’s in that position, won’t convince Cas to obey.
This then morphs from a moment of empowerment to a moment of loss of control as the soldier mode takes over, yeah? The djinn needed killing, but slaughtering?
There are a myriad of possible implications here, but the sentiment of the scene itself is Cas breaking free and stating unequivocally that he sees through fake points of authority and will not follow blindly anymore. Cas sees through the bullshit now. He’s breaking free of his indoctrination once and for all.
Which is why the episode, for Cas, ends in that absolutely mind-blowing decision to contact Sam, which we’ll be privy to in the next ep, because Cas realises that staying away won’t solve anything and it’s not the way he can actually truly help either.
He felt he had to cut communication in order to make a statement, but ignoring Sam is neither smart nor does it serve his intention of making Dean understand he’s in the wrong and that he should stop being such a selfish douche.
Staying in the game, but making certain that Dean acknowledges he’s been entirely unfair and apologises, is more mature than giving everyone the silent treatment and missing out on vital information pertaining to the probable end of the world in the process.
All of this has me excited for what it means for Dean and Cas, without me expecting that it means anything! Dean shows how he’s ready to let Cas go live his life as best he sees fit, but he’s going to call Cas out for being a dumbass, yeah? Which is well-deserved. Cas is being stupidly stubborn and he really should answer Sam. Dean is letting go (while, you know, being forlorn without Cas but recognising that this forlornness is his own burden to bear) and isn’t going to tell Cas to come back.
I mean, unless Cas shows he didn’t mean move on as in remove myself forever from your presence and stays in contact with Sam, because then there’s a chance that what Cas wants and needs... is an apology. *slow eyebrow raise*
What it looks like to me is them being placed in a position to choose one another without needing the other to define their identity, or even to assist in providing perspective. They are moving into facing that final fear - their shared fear of happiness - and through facing it, beginning to believe that they deserve to be happy.
I am just way too curious now to know exactly where it’s all landing! We know Dean will give in, we know he’ll end up reaching out, but omg what will that mean overall? I mean... will Cas hear that prayer, is my foremost question, with his powers dwindling? #wewillknowafterChristmas

Also ALSO tin foil hat time spoilers for S2 and S8+ below~~~
So I played the mission where Five blasts Van Ark’s plane out of the sky again today and some of the things Van Ark says right before he gets a rocket launcher to the face are sus to say the LEAST (ESPECIALLY if you think he’s still alive which I do a little after playing S8...looking at you, Sam’s throwaway comment about never seeing the body):
“Runner Five, I do hope you can hear me. I'm broadcasting on a wide band of frequencies just to say – I know your face, I know your name. I do not forget, and I do not forgive. I will come and find you.”
And:
“When you least expect it, I am going to destroy you.”
You know when Five would sure as hell least expect it? Seven odd years five or take after thinking they killed Van Ark
PLUS his VA literally came back for a Study in Ichor like.........it could be just for the story but would make a hell of a lot more sense if there was some additional reasons for his VA to be back in the studio
(Thanks to @zrtranscripts for the Van ark quotes!)

Codas for SDCC Trailers: Undeniable Patterns
Today, I want to talk about the coda. In the S9 SDCC trailer we just got, it’s Rosita and Eugene hiding from the Whisperers. Naturally, this spurred all kinds of thoughts in my head. So here they are!
Tumblr media
Since S4, all of the official, SDCC trailers have had a coda. I’m referring to is after the trailer says, “The Walking Dead” and the date the season premiere will air, there’s another few seconds of scenes. We refer to that as the coda because it's what comes after the end. (Of course we didn't start calling it that until after 5x08 aired, but whatever. ;D)
In the S4 trailer, the coda had to do with Terminus. It was Daryl, Michonne, Tyreese, and Bob in the car when they heard Terminus broadcasting.
Tumblr media
In the S5 Trailer, and most significant to TD, the coda was Beth at Grady, being beaten by Dawn (5x04).
Tumblr media
The S6 was Daryl out in the woods when he met Dwight (it came from 6x06).
Tumblr media
The S7 coda was Tara, discovering Oceanside (7x07).
Tumblr media
The S8 coda was what I always referred to as Rick’s Old man Coda. We saw it in both 8x01 and again 8x08 when we found out it was actually Carl’s vision. This one is slightly different. But don’t worry, it will still follow the same pattern.
Tumblr media
Now, in the S9 trailer, Eugene and Rosita are hiding from the Whisperers.
We always want to relate the coda of the trailer to Beth, somehow. And, while most of the situations in the trailer codas do have something to do with her, or at least are very heavy on Beth symbolism, because she hasn't actually returned yet, we can't relate them to her for sure (with the exception of S5, of course, because she WAS the coda). But something is occurred to me that's kind of interesting.
In every single one of these cases, the episode the coda is pulled from ends up introducing a new group or community. (S4 = Terminus, S5 = Grady, S6 = Dwight/Saviors, S7 = Oceanside, S8 = Carl’s vision of what the new world/new communities would look like. So slightly different, but still in the same vein.)
Also, in the episode the scenes from the coda trailers come from, it’s really more of an introduction to the new group/community, and they aren’t dealt with in a big way until later. Most times, they show up again in the season finale, and are carried over into the next season. But sometimes they aren’t dealt with at all until the next season.
So, in 4x03, they heard Terminus broadcasting, but we didn’t actually get to Terminus until 4x16 (finale) and then it carried over into S5.
In S5, 5x04 was intro to Grady, and they dealt with it again fairly quickly after (the MSF) but I’m gonna submit that Grady was a little different (I’ll come back to why in a minute).
In 6x06, we were introduced to the Saviors, saw them again briefly in 6x09, but didn’t meet them in a big way until Negan showed up in 6x16 (finale).
Tumblr media
Then of course it carried over for two seasons, in s7 and S8.
In 7x06 we were introduced to Oceanside, and didn’t see it for the rest of the season. TF at large didn’t arrive at Oceanside until S7, and then it, also, carried over to S8.
Finally, with S8, we saw it in 8x01, but didn’t really understand what we were seeing (introduction), saw it again in the MSF, but didn’t actually see the end of it until 8x16 when Rick sat under the tree with the plate glass windows. And because Negan is still alive, and the communities didn’t actually do all the rebuilding from Carl’s vision in S8, it will carry over into S9 as well.
Also notice that each time they encounter the new group in the coda, they lose another character in a big way. Not in the scenes of the coda trailer when the new group is introduced, but when TF actually encounters them.
So, Daryl didn’t lose Beth when TF got to Terminus in 4x16, but he’d lost her RIGHT before that.
In S5, when they got to Grady, they lost Beth again, in a much bigger way.
In S6, when Negan showed up, Glenn and Abraham died.
In S7, when Tara discovered Oceanside, Heath disappeared. (So the loss can be death or disappearance, per Beth in S4 and Heath in S7).
In s8, obviously it was Carl.
(Quick aside: actually, the case of the Saviors is really protracted and complicated. Because they’re such long-running enemies—introduced in S6, not “beaten” until S8 and still kinda going in S9—the pattern is repeated in many places for them. You could argue we had two, if not three introductions to the Saviors. When Daryl meets Dwight in 6x06, Tina is lost. Not a huge character, but still, she dies. And of course she was a Beth proxy. They met a group of Saviors in 6x09, and it was the Saviors themselves that Daryl took out with the rocket launcher. The next “intro” to the Saviors was when Dwight showed up and killed Denise. A much bigger character and loss, especially where Daryl was concerned. But it still fits the pattern because when TF at large met the Saviors in a big way in 6x16, we had two of the biggest deaths of the series, Glenn and Abraham. Just wanted to point out the details here.)
Tumblr media
And these aren’t the only deaths, either. Bob died as a result of the Termites. Tina and Denise as a result of the Saviors. Later, also Sasha. So I’m sure we could find more intricate patterns in this.
So what’s my point in telling you all this? A couple of things.
1.Beth (naturally ;D)
I said Grady was a little different. The ways in which it’s different are things TD has been pointing out for years, but let’s reiterate them here for the sake of the pattern.
With each of the new communities that are introduced in trailer coda scenes, we usually get a very in-depth look at them before TF moves on from them. We see either their inner workings, or their history, or both. So with Terminus, we had the “Then/Now” flashbacks in 5x01. With the Saviors, well, we had a very in-depth, two-season look at their organization. Many characters (Daryl, Carl, Eugene, Sasha) ended up on the inside so we could see exactly what the organization was and how it was run. With Oceanside, Tara was on the inside, which helped us see it up close. We had a pretty good idea of what it was and what was happening there. And we got at least an oral history of what happened to these women and how they ended up where they did.
But Grady was different. We got a little bit of oral history through Dr. Edwards and Dawn, but not tons. And Grady was never as transparent as these other communities. They never showed us EXACTLY what was going on there. Were they working on a cure? How, exactly, did the ward system work?
Tumblr media
We can work a lot of it out by deduction, but they gave us all these tantalizing clues and weird dialogue that they never explained. So again, Grady was different
2. The other big thing is that each of these communities was taken down by TF in some way. Terminus was burnt out and knocked on it’s butt. When the Termites followed TF, they were killed. With the Saviors, after an actual war, Negan was taken down, and the Saviors are no longer a “power” in the area. Just another part of the community. So the Sanctuary, as it existed before, is no longer running. Even Oceanside, though it wasn’t burned or anything, was still “taken down” by TF. They overpowered everyone there in S7 and took all their guns. Then in S8, they joined the war.
Tumblr media
But once again, Grady is different. TF may have taken down Dawn, but they didn’t destroy the community, as they did Terminus, nor integrate it’s residents into their group, as they did with the Saviors and Oceanside. So Grady doesn’t really fit the pattern. At least, not yet.
So I’m gonna submit (and I don’t think this will be much of a stretch for anyone on TD) that everything we saw of Grady in 5a was simply part of the introduction. It’s obvious to me that we haven’t seen the second part of this pattern, where TF “deals” with the community in a more final way, either by taking it down violently or by integrating the people from it into their own community.
Most of us think both will happen with Grady. With some variations, most of us think Beth will take down Grady or at least be present at it’s take-down (TF may not be there, but then again there is a theory that in the flash where she’s running in her yellow polo, the arm we see next to her might be Daryl’s, so…).
Tumblr media
And if she shows up leading people from Grady (Dr. Edwards, the remaining cops, etc) then they will be integrated into Rick’s community as well. Just saying.
And think about it: TF encountering the community in a big way and losing someone, as they did with Grady in 5x08, DOES fit the pattern,
Tumblr media
but it lines up in the other instances with 4x16, 6x16, 7x06 and 8x08. In each other instance, TF deals with the community again after that, sometimes for several seasons, and it ends in a much more final way. So I think it’s safe to say that we haven’t seen the end of Grady yet (which we all thought anyway) and that this is why we saw it in the coda of the S5 trailer.
3. Another observation: the next, most obvious questions the skeptics will ask is why it’s taking so long to get the second half. I’m sure they’ll argue that none of the stories around other communities in the trailer codas took this long to finish. They would be correct about that. So, doesn’t that argue against this theory? Why would they take so long to finish THIS story (Beth’s/Grady’s) as opposed to the others?
My answer could be super-long-winded and go into Beth being the new sheriff and needing to disappear for a while (I have more thoughts on that coming up that have to deal with the board games featured in the Governor’s S4 episodes. Yes, you read that right. Yes, it’s also very random. Go back and watch those episodes to see if you can figure it out. I’ll be posting about it either later this week or early next week) but I won’t go into all that.
What I will say is this: none of the other stories, except Beth’s/Grady’s, have an actual episode called Coda to send them off with.
Tumblr media
TF thought they were finished with the Termites in 5x01, but they weren’t. There was a coda to the story where the Termites showed up again a few episodes later, and had to be dealt with in a more final way.
Daryl might have thought the Saviors were good and dealt with after blowing them up in 6x09, but not. Lots more story and big interactions with the Saviors after that.
Tumblr media
Tara totally planned on being done with Oceanside after 7x06. She promised she’d keep their location a secret, and fully meant to keep that promise. But things changed. So there was more story to come. A coda. But in none of these situations was there an episode called Coda when TF encountered the community and lost someone.
As I said, we had the intro to Grady through Beth in 5x04. Them going to Grady and losing her was the next part of the pattern, but the sequence didn’t finish. Instead, they called the episode Coda. Now, TD has analyzed the crap out of that title ever since the episode aired, but for purposes of this post, I think the title serves two purposes.
1) They had to tell us there would be a coda because, unlike the rest of these stories, the rest of the pattern wouldn’t play out in the next handful of episodes. Or even the next handful of seasons for that matter. So TD has always interpreted that title correctly. We always knew there would be more to come.
2) I think the fact that all the stories had codas, but Beth’s included an episode called Coda shows that her arc is the big cheese. The grand-daddy of codas will be with this story line. It will take many seasons to come to pass, but that’s the whole point. This story is all about coming back, second chances, resurrections, etc. People thought Merle was dead in S1. Nope. Coda in S3. They thought Morales was long gone. Nope. Tiny coda in S8. Many people still think Heath won’t be back. No freakin’ way, people. This show doesn’t leave loose ends like that. See what I mean? This is a huge theme of the show, and Beth’s/Grady’s arc will be the biggest embodiment of it.
Tumblr media
And once again, I’m hugely encouraged by the fact that Angela Kang worked so heavily on Beth’s story line, wrote Coda, named the episode Coda, and now, when everything else points to Beth’s return, Kang has become the show runner.
Okay, this has all been about Beth, but just a couple of thoughts about the actual coda for S9 (Rosita and Eugene hiding from the Whisperers).
1) Following the pattern, chances are this will be an introduction to the Whisperers (or whatever they’re called in the show ;D). No way to know what episode this will take place in, but given that the trailer generally covers mostly the first few episodes of the season, chances are it will be early on in S9. Definitely part of 9a. If it follows the pattern closely, chances are Rosita and Eugene will encounter them in this scene, but escape. Then TF won’t encounter them in a big way until 9x16 (the finale) and it will carry over into S10.
Why does that matter? For one, I just want to see if I’m right and how closely it adheres to the pattern. But this is also why I’m not sure I trust reports of the second time jump (5-6 years). I’m truly not totally against it where Beth is concerned. At this point, if they’re gonna bring her back, it won’t matter how much time passes. They’ll still do it. Maybe it won’t be in the way we originally wanted, and maybe it will take more time than we want, but both those things are already true.
My issue is that I just don’t see them introducing the Whisperers through Rosita and Eugene in 9a, and then waiting five years for TF to deal with them. That just doesn’t seem logical to me. And I could be wrong, of course, but I just don’t really trust that report. Even the spoiler site who has “confirmed” it already said regarding Rick’s death that they think they’re receiving purposely misleading reports, so we’ll just have to wait and see.
2. If S9 is not really about the Whisperers (just an intro to them) then what the hell will it be about?
Obviously somewhat about fighting between the communities and trying to establish everything. And of course there are the reports of Rick’s death, and possibly Maggie’s (which suspiciously everyone was completely silent about at Comic Con). But even that doesn’t seem like enough to fill an entire season. So…maybe the return of a certain blond and the rest of the pattern for Grady? Just saying. ;D
I've said this before, but if S9 follows the template from S4, and the trailer is convincing me more and more that it will, then there's going to be some other thing that's occupying team family. In 4a, it was the virus. Maybe here it will be these conflicts between the communities, and the possible uprising of a small faction against Rick. But I think, like the virus, that will be pretty small potatoes, and may be completely solved by 9×08.

In fact, if they follow the pattern the template of the governor's storyline, it might be a matter of that conflict being over by episode 5. Hopefully by then Beth will appear, and the next two episodes, just like the governor in S4, will be her back story. All that will take up 9A. And of course Rick will be departing at some point. I still kind of think that he won’t actually go until the MSF.
Keep in mind that 4b was all about the characters dealing with the emotion of what happened in 4a: the tragedy of the prison falling and Hershel’s death. And 4b was where Bethyl became a thing in Still. So here’s hoping 9b will follow that same pattern.
Final observation (I promise!):
Look at this picture of Eugene and Rosita.

Does it strike you as something we’ve seen before? This is going to be another example of Bethyl’s Side by Side arc, guys. Remember this edit?
Tumblr media
That would be significant to me either way, and I won’t attempt to over-analyze it until we actually see this episode, but I thought about it after watching the trailer, and two things jump out at me as very significant.
1) I really haven’t thought about this theme other than in passing for the past two seasons. Anyone want to guess why? Because we really haven’t SEEN it in the past two seasons. Unless there’s an instance I missed (let me know if you can think of one, but with the emphasis on the action of the war, I really don’t think there’s been one) the last time we saw this theme was in S6. And that was huge because we saw it twice in 6x06, Always Accountable. First, with Daryl and the walker lying next to his bike, who so obviously represented Beth.
Tumblr media
Then again in the burnt out GREENhouse, just before Tina (Beth proxy) died right in front of Daryl.
Tumblr media
So we had this theme represented in season 4, 5, and 6. Then it disappeared for two seasons. Now, with all the other stuff I’ve said above, and all the hope and evidence we have for S9, and Angela Kang being show runner, suddenly this theme is reappearing. Hmm. That makes me super excited!
2) It’s reappearing in conjunction with the Whisperers. We haven’t heard the word, “Whisperers” used on the show yet, but we have heard the Wolves. I guess we’ll be finding out if this theory is correct pretty soon in S9, but I still think the Wolves and the Whisperers may be one and the same in the show.
To explain why this is significant, let’s revisit the instance of the Side by Side theme in S5. It always seemed really random to me. In 5x13, Forget, when Rick, Daryl and Carol meet secretly to talk about stealing guns from Alexandria’s arsenal, it shows this:
Tumblr media
It’s a male and female. The female, significantly, has been shot in the forehead. When I first saw this, I wracked my brain trying to figure out the significance of showing during this episode and scene. Did it have to do with the guns? Alexandria? What? Beth obviously didn’t return in 5b. It took me a while to figure it out, but I think it has to do with the wolves.
These two dead walkers don’t have Ws on their foreheads that I can see, but it’s right after this that Daryl notices the W on the forehead of the walker Carol kills.
Tumblr media
So it’s kind of a mini introduction to the Wolves, through the marks they leave on the forehead. (Then, later in the season, 5x15, we see the blond walker on the tree who looks like Beth, who’s face Daryl looks into as if to make sure it’s not her, and she has a W on her forehead.)
But if we look at the sequence in 5x13, we have Daryl waiting for a walker to reach them, and we see the side-by-side theme, and then a representation of the Wolves. Now, in S9, we have a representation of the side-by-side theme (Rosita and Eugene) and the “Ws” are returning. See how this was a foreshadow?
By extension, this side-by-side theme started with Beth and Daryl in S4 (4x10, Inmates) which is why we’ve always linked it to them. So it could be an indication that Beth will return with the Wolves/Whisperers as well. Just saying.
Aside: Sorry but I gotta add one more thing. While getting the pic on the previous slide, I rewatched this scene where Daryl, Rick and Carol talk. Everything in it is a foreshadow. Not of Beth, but of what happens with the wolves in 6x02.
At first, they can’t see the walker but can hear it growling. Daryl says, “I can’t see it, but it’s close.” That was also true of the wolves at this point in the story, but TF didn’t know it. He also says, “it’s just one of them.” Obviously there was more than one wolf in 6x02, but I think that’s code for it being a small amount, not all of the wolves that attacked. (Hence, we will see them again.)
Tumblr media
When the walker shows up, Daryl says, “I got it,” but Carol tells him to wait and shoots it herself. Her reasoning is their cover story for leaving Alexandria was Daryl and Rick were going to teach her to shoot, so she needed to not come back with a full clip. But think about it: Daryl & Rick didn’t fight the Wolves. They were outside the walls when it happened. Who took down the wolves almost single-handedly? Carol. So this was a foreshadow of what would take place in 6x02.
But that just gives this theory more credence. Everything in that scene meant something. Foreshadowed something. And nothing in 6x02 in any way explains the reason for this Bethyl side-by side theme. Okay, I think I’m done now. ;D
Incidentally, the side-by-side theme happens most often with a male and female who are love interests. Not always, but most often. That MAY indicate that Eugene and Rosita’s relationship will go the way of the comic books, now.
So these have been my many and sprawling thoughts about the trailer coda. And you thought the coda was meant to be short! ;D
