kde connect remote input?
Or if you aren't worried about it, kde connect loginctl unlock-session command?
Though I'm not sure how it'd work on a steam deck because I have no clue how everything is set up. I have no steam deck experience.
Nvm I just read the "after turning it on" bit of your post. Idk.
Again if you aren't worried about it, see if there's a way to setup auto login? If you're slightly worried about it maybe make it auto lock after login and then use kde connect?
I fear a cheap wireless keyboard may be your best bet.
Or maybe I'm just completely misunderstanding the whole situation. again, I have 0 deck experience.
When playing VR I've been going in the living room since that's where my router is so I can get ethernet. However I don't have a keyboard there, so whenever I need to unlock it, mostly after turning it on, I gotta go to the desk in my room just so I can type in my password.
Anyone have a good idea how I can input my password on my steam deck without having to plug in a keyboard? I'm currently using sddm btw
#these aren't great ideas but they're what immediately came to mind#i don't have any steamdeck experience so idk how much configuration you can do without a risk of it eventually breaking#you might just have to suffer and walk back and forth.#at the very least i know loginctl works with kde and sddm on my system#though I only have it set up to lock my screen#terrible and bad half awake ideas that aren't thought through

the story of my brief adventures in linux customisation has been steadily ongoing, culminating in a 24h experiment with @arch-official yesterday.
(unfortunately i do not have the willpower, patience, or energy to learn and tinker in such depths that arch requires me to, so it was but a brief excursion)
(though i definitely want go give it another try in the future!)
went back to my beloved opensuse tumbleweed again this evening, but instead of doing what i've always done (kde plasma install), i went with a mininal desktop. aka just icewm.
from then on i installed @hyprland-official and set out on some much lighter-feeling tinkering.
(important to note that i went with hyprland on arch yesterday too, and have also done some brief, failed experimenting with it in the past year)
it's been fun! i've noticed though that the minimal install came with a start-sign-in-package that i didn't like so i installed sddm to replace it. and god is the basic basic version ugly. and idk if i'll be able to get it to look the way it does when i simply go for a kde install.
seriously it's jarring how ugly sddm looks out of the box (which. i been knew but still).
plus i can't log in with root??? like. i can't switch my user???
so i might do yet another quit reinstall of tumbleweed tomorrow morning but with kde plasma as a backup de, even though i don't want to go through the whole clean-up process because kde comes with too much stuff i don't want or need...
(it's almost certain that i will reinstall again)
hyprland becoming my main work environment is a given though, and i'm really excited to spend even more time really customising everything to fit my wants and needs :3

NEW COMPUTER, NEW(?) LINUX
I FINALLY GOT IT WORKING
HOLY HELL THIS HAS BEEN TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS
I FUCKING HATE be quiet! NOW AFTER THE SHIT THIS CASE HAS DONE TO ME MENTALLY
I am running @arch-official on my new workstation/gaming because although I love the idea of Bazzite and the general function of Fedora, Arch just kinda yknow. does stuff. lmao.

Now I just need to settle on some various things.
For starters, it installed with SDDM i think? and it looks godawful. so i'm either switching greeters or getting a theme.
Speaking of theme. I need to fucking rice. But I'm terrible at ricing and super indicisive so i might just hire someone lmao. Anyone looking for some contract work?
Also, web browser. I made a post before about various web browsers and their usefulness. mostly asking about non-chromium. And it got some pretty cool answers/insights! I plan on tallying up the results later after dealing with some family stuff.
Hooray!!!
(i love you arch please fix your wiki it's awful)
#linux#linuxposting#linux posting#linux post#arch linux#kde plasma#yes i gave up colouring the post a quarter of the way through#gregory#fuck windows#where is lxde i want to kiss kit

tried manually installing a kde plasma theme the other day
i somehow managed to brick kwin, then crash sddm, and then uninstall networkmanager?
anyway a fresh install (yes, i chose the nuclear option) fixed things, and i will no longer be following manual installation instructions without full knowledge of the desktop environment in which i am working. kde plasma has spoiled me as a daily user, but it’s probably not the best option for budding system administrators.
i’d love to switch to a tiling window manager - i tried awesome over the summer and had fun with it on my older laptop - but it’s also nice to have out-of-the-box functionality like a taskbar, krunner, a system tray, automatic battery management, and working media control buttons (volume, play/pause, brightness). i’m too busy with real, important work to spend hours ricing and scripting my own desktop, and so for now i will be sticking with kde.

Chimera-Linux with btrfs
Chimera Linux is a rather new from the ground up Linux Distribution built with LLVM, MUSL, BSDUtils and dinitit comes with GNOME and KDE Plasma. It, however doesn't come with a installer so here's how to install the KDE flavour with btrfs root and home directories plus a swap partition for use in Linux KVM with UEFI.
Step 1. Get a Chimera live image from https://repo.chimera-linux.org/live/latest/
I use the chimera-linux-x86_64-LIVE-XXXXXXXX-plasma.iso image with KDE Plasma 6 and the following steps assume you do the same.
Step 2. Boot the live image
Step 3. Prepare the target disk with KDE Partition Manager
/dev/vda /dev/vda1, vfat, EFI System, 500 MB /dev/vda2, btrfs, Root FS, subvols @ & @home , rest of the disk /dev/vda3, swap, SWAP FS, 2x RAM Size
Step 4. Open Konsole and do the following
doas -s mkdir -p /media/root mount -t btrfs /dev/vda2 /media/root chmod 755 /media/root btrfs subvolume create /media/root/@ btrfs subvolume create /media/root/@home btrfs subvolume set-default /media/root/@ umount /media/root mount -t btrfs -o compress=zstd:5,ssd,noatime,subvol=/@ /dev/vda2 /media/root mkdir -p /media/root/home mount -t btrfs -o compress=zstd:5,ssd,noatime,subvol=/@home /dev/vda2 /media/root/home mkdir -p /media/root/boot/efi mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /media/root/boot/efi
let's bootstrap our new chimera system
chimera-bootstrap -l /media/root exit
time to chroot into our vergin system
doas chimera-chroot /media/root
time to bring everything up to date
apk update apk upgrade --available
if something is iffy
apk fix
we want our swap to show up in the fstab
swapon /dev/vda3
Let's build a fstab
genfstab / >> /etc/fstab
install the latest LTS Kernel
apk add linux-lts
install the latest released kernel
apk add linux-stable update-initramfs -c -k all
time for EFI GRUB
apk add grub-x86_64-efi grub-install -v --efi-directory=/boot/efi update-grub
install KDE, Firefox, Thunderbird
apk add plasma-desktop flatpak smartmontools ufw firefox thunderbird qemu-guest-agent-dinit spice-vdagent-dinit
Set root password
passwd root
create main user
useradd myuser passwd myuser
add user to relevant groups
usermod -a -G wheel,kvm,plugdev myuser
Set hostname
echo chimera > /etc/hostname
set timezone
ln -sf /usr/share/zoneinfo/Europe/Berlin /etc/localtime
Configure some services
syslog-ng
dinitctl enable -o syslog-ng
sshd
dinitctl enable -o sshd
KDE Login Manager
dinitctl enable -o sddm
only needed when in KVM VM
dinitctl enable -o spice-vdagentd dinitctl enable -o qemu-ag
network time client
dinitctl enable -o chrony
network manager defaults to dhcp client on first ethernet interface
dinitctl enable -o networkmanager
optional: enable firewall if installed
dinitctl enable -o ufw
see the firewall status
ufw status
configure flatpak
flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub https://dl.flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo
just to be sure
update-initramfs -c -k all update-grub
exit from chroot
exit
umount drive
doas umount /media/root/boot/efi doas umount /media/root/home doas umount /media/root
Step 5. Reboot the System

1: I think it was raspbian. I used a rasberry pi as a pc for a bit lmao.
2: one time I forgot to create swap space when installing arch and then corrupted my filesystem trying to fix that.
3: I thought that rm -rf /* wouldn't do anything if you didn't run it with sudo (^._.^)/
4: no ew. I run it in a vm on rare occasions
5: yep! I use fish :3
6: no.
7: probably a rasberry pi but it might have been one of my laptops?
8: yes, I love neovim <3
9: theres too many to choose from. sl, darktable, and neovim are all very cool
10: it doesn't really affect me but it seems like accessibility kinda sucks on linux.
11: too many nazis and weirdos
12: if I didn't like it it wouldn't be my current distro
13: Xenia is pretty cool :3
14: sddm
15: I use arch, so both?
16: nop

forever
He clings on to hope, but worries it's in vain.
He holds back his tears, forces a smile through the pain.
Knowing she's likely in another man's bed, he whispers I love you, just to be said.
His memory of her alive in his mind, wanting to go back to stop and rewind.
Wishing the past, he could simply explain, but can't find the words is driving him insane.
He just wanted her, the whole not the half, to go back and listen, to hold her and laugh.
The world keeps on moving and rotating on, he feels her there, but she's invisible, she is gone.
They tell him to give up, to give in and go home, but until he finds her, forever he'll roam.
They don't understand when you love in that way, there can be no tomorrow, there is no new day.
Out of control, out of reach, left within, how can they expect him to find love again?
It's only her, that he needs in his life. Complicated and simple, his joy and his strife.

to be clear, i qm reblogging this unironically. arch is not bad to install. just put in sddm and kde and you are all set for everything else.
Distro recommendations were a scam, "arch is not for beginners" and "hard", even without archinstall it's just following instructions and worst case looking things up, Debian on the other hand has - like - no packages and things just randomly didn't work, I couldn't use another wm than gnome because they wouldn't display aything (while still working perfectly otherwise) and it told me to flash a CD ROM when I was trying to install anything, which you could just ignore but it was annoying as hell, while on arch everything just works? I have little expertise in computers and could configure things exactly how I wanted them and get every program I want. Don't listen to the evil voices trying to get you to waste your computer to Mint or god forbid ubuntu, just go straight into arch, nothing will break, you are an invincible soldier sent by god herself, arch is the computing experience of your dreams and everything works out of the box I am so serious.
