Handpainted SD Gundam Aerial. It’s my first time doing it so there's a lot to improve, however It’s still better than using all the 50 stickers from the kit.

Here's the unpaintied kit for comparison:

For this kit I used metallic acrylics from a local miniature painting stand, and Vallejo dark blue and white. The only stickers I put where for the permet marks, and the eyes + back camera. I used the black gundam panel liner and put a gloss top coat.

I know it looks rough, I've been researching and practicing for months, but at one point I just went into it and painted it in 3 days. I knew it wasn't going to be perfect, but sometimes, if I don't do the thing right away, then I end up not doing anything, so here it is. Maybe I'll figure out how to fix some mistakes in the future, or at least my next handpainted kit won't be looking that rough. I am aware of the concept of thinning the paint, but I'm not very good at it yet. I guess it's a matter of practice.

Next kit I want to paint is the SDEX Nu Gundam. I hope I can improve.

January/February Gunpla

HG Gundam Lfrith Jiu

Certainly a neat design for a Gundam, especially the shell unit making up the face. The kit itself is solid like most G-With builds, but also suffers from those awful C clip ankles. Honestly my biggest issue with the kit is the same one I had with the Calibarn: the clear plastic for the shell units is just too dark, and while that may be more accurate, it unfortunately keeps the colorful permet lines from standing out.

You can, however, flip off people with the big arm.

SDEX Gundam Aerial

My very first SDEX kit, and I'm in love with this little Space Oomfie. From what I've gathered, it's a bit of a step up from previous SDEX kits (the backside is fully designed, even with color correcting stickers), and it looks great sitting on my desk. My only caution is: I spent more time applying stickers to this kit than actually building it, and while it certainly looks good with most of the stickers properly applied, it needs A LOT to reach near color accuracy, and poorly applied stickers can definitely hurt it. If you want to paint it accurately, you're in for a long project.

HG 105 Dagger + Gunbarrel

I've wanted this kit for years, and it finally got a reprint! As a lover of funnels, bits and all manner of remote weaponry, I've always loved the Ganbarrel Striker; it's my favorite of the bunch. The kit itself certainly shows it's age (2004) with basic part design, limited articulation and poor color separation, but the simplicity was almost refeshing after building nothing but modern WFM kits the past year. I had to paint a lot more details than I initially expected, but the results were worth it.

Absolutely in love with the Gunbarrel Striker though, and of course I had to attach it to my favorite OMNI suit, the Windam.

HG Rising Freedom Gundam

Oh, I love it. The body itself is probably my favorite iteration of the Freedom series of Gundams, and if it wasn't for the wing stripes and lack of Dragoons/Wings of Light, it would be my favorite of the Freedom line. The kit itself is well designed, although back wings for the MA mode interfere with the wing articulation. 90% of those stickers are for the backpack (and the rest are basically for the gun), and if you don't intend on transforming it, they can be pretty safely ignored. I think it looks WAY better without the white stripes on the wings.

GunPla Review: SDWH Gundam Aerial Onmitsu

I got the ninja Aerial and it was a satisfying build. Since it's an SD kit, it's beginner friendly, it doesn't need nippers nor any particular tool to build it and it can be easily completed in one afternoon. Mostly, the hardest part of the build is to apply all the color correction stickers included in the kit.

The final result is good looking, although it's quite obvious that even with all the stickers, the kit would need some paint job to reach its full potential. This is quite noticeable particularily on the kit's backside, as you can see in the pics:

The accesories and some details of the armour lack color, making it look incomplete in some parts. On the other hand, the kirahagane parts and the aluminium stickers gives the kit a more detailed look than most of the SD kits lack. Surely it needs to get painted to look better, but it will still look pretty decent out of the box, because it's more detailed and pretty than the normal SDEX kits.

For comparison, here's how the SDEX standard looks. It's less detailed and it also needs a ton of color correction stickers to look more series accurate (although it'll never look as good as the HG Aerial). Personally I think that the SDEX kits are great for practicing customization, since they aren't expensive and you can use them to practice painting your kits (this is why I didn't put color correction stickers on the Aerial). However, if you want a cute little kit that can be displayed without much customization, I would recommend this one, even if it's more expensive than the SDEX.

As I mentioned, this one comes with a lot of accesories and details. I like the design which retained the characteristics from both the original SD Onmitsu and Aerial. I also think it's pretty cool how they integrated the gund-bits to Aerial's armor. (They can also be used as a weapon).

Onmitsu Aerial's lore looks interesting. According to this, Aerial is a young shinobi leader with great agility but with a laid back personality. Apparently they're also besties with Musha (RX-78-2) and in fact, some elements like the monocle and the shisa can also be used as accessories for the Musha kit. I would like to know more about this AU, it really looks fun.

Anyway, in conclusion, this is a good kit if you want something that's easy to build but still looks good. It's also a great version of Aerial, so I wholeheartedly recommend it.
