nilou is quite the friend.

it feels like running with your pinkies entwined through the forests of sumeru, the sunny weather and the muffled hustle of the city. it feels like the world centered around the two of you, giggling as the two of you ran around the shallow lake next to the waterfall.

nilou uses her vision to create. be it flowers blooming on the ground, bubbles in illusion for something even more beautiful—shes amazing when it comes to using her vision for the arts. and so, when the night comes on a hot sunny day, she manipulates the water around the lake to wrap around you.

it circles around you, translucent lotus’ blooming under her touch, her palm aligning with yours, and she smiles. the water droplets look like colors from the aurora, her fingers would dance gracefully to show you the wonders of water, the art in shaping it.

even if the two of you were only friends, nilou had hoped this moment atleast meant something to you, that her feelings would get across your oblivious personality—that when she twirls you around, you’d see how her hand would linger for far too long, that her attention would be focused on the way you moved.

your laughter haunts her on the quiet walk home, after she had brought you to yours. your eyes, oh, she had pretended it was so full of love towards her—not as a friend, but as a lover.

she had liked you longer than she could remember, and she had hoped that one day, maybe, you could reciprocate how she feels. endless, deep, and everflowing. that, is how she loves.

its just a shame that you’ll never know. to you, nilou is like that towards everyone. shes ever so the polite goody-two-shoes the people adore. she cares for the people—and so you had thought that she treated everyone like that.

but its a stupid way of thinking. not once has nilou snuck out of the theatre with someone in hand, just to show a specific spot she had kept hidden for everytime she practiced. nilou has only shown her safe haven to a few—and its just sweet how you, out of all the people she knows, she trusted you.

Saw a video explaining why conservatives don’t make good art and I think I agree when it comes to the Statement Piece Conservative and Traditional art but ultimately disagree about conservative art in general. The premise was that conservative art doesn’t ask questions, it just reaffirms belief (which I would also hold lots of liberal art to as well) but I just… think it ignores how much of celebrated and loved art ultimately is regressive or at least holding up the status quo

Often in the guise of challenging ideas

Like… I enjoyed Conclave well enough but (spoiler warning) the ending is literally bioessentialist, intelligent design garbage. The film is “feminist” in actually giving a voice to the quiet, female labor holding up the Catholic Church and exposing how they’re trampled on. But it seems the films conclusion is that a man having a uterus makes him calmer, more pure and innocent, and ideal balance of the genders and therefore makes him more rational and… again… pure. Men corrupt, women get corrupted by men… that’s the b plot.

And this film frames it in a sort of incredulous way and makes it warm and fuzzy by going on about god’s intentional design… but… this is… regressive.

It’s bioessentialist.

And you can argue this is an unkind reading and unlike Real Conservative Media this film is questioning institutions and it has diverse rep so it can’t be conservative

But it’s ultimately upholding the Catholic Church as something that can be saved and also… has extremely dated views on womanhood that don’t suddenly become positivity when reframed through an intersex character

This film is conserving the Catholic Church by modernizing it and making it palatable.

And I’d argue a lot of Good Art and Fun Art and Well Loved Art is doing this. And a lot of this is most art is still being made by wealthy, white people and when it’s not being made by them, it still often relies on wealthy and/or white approval to get financed or distributed. The people who benefit the most from the status quo are creating art supposedly challenging it.

And I’m not trying to use conclave as the punching bag for this—I can see how this film cna be seen as disruptive—but I think it’s a good, recent example about how conservative ideals still sneak in

I’m saying this as someone who is not conservative and would rather this isn’t true

But imo a lot of films “ask questions” for the viewers and then kinda lead them to a poisoned well lol
