Bald ist wieder Weihnachten und ich habe mal wieder ein Angebot von Saal-Digital genutzt und ein paar schöne Postkarten gemacht. Die Oberfläche ist sehr Edel, satiniert und sieht robust aus.

Alles Drumherum war wie gewohnt unkompliziert und schnell.

PHOTOGRAPHERS / PRINTERS /PUBLISHERS, please read below.

I've put my usual shooting and processing routine on hold in lieu of designing my book for publishing. In less than two weeks it's already been a bit of a hassle, and learning process. After designing my book project with Saal digital titled "Solitude" I have a good grasp on the graphic design aspect, and was very pleased with how that turned out - so I'm using that as a template for this next project.

I used their software for that though, so creating this one solely in photoshop is a bit tougher. Due to size and orientation restrictions on Amazon publishing I've sidelined the Jumping Spider book for now, and instead have begun creating a selection of vertical landscapes of America and Europe.

The first thing I noticed was that in converting the color to CMYK for printing seems to take some of the pop out of these images. This worries me a little, Saal did all this for me last time. The second is dropping the resolution to fit into the proper spread layout, then converting the spreads to tif files for submission. Again, I worry that the detail, sharpness, and color may suffer.

If anyone has gone through this process, please chime in. Specifically - [jpegs > cmyk > downsized (slightly) > tif] for spread. Will resolution, color, detail or sharpness suffer?

This is the first production that I am doing from scratch and I'd rather not have to correct after initial printing. Its already a ton of work, so I'd like to minimize any issues.

The general layout will be as follows - full page fill on one side, white bordered on the other when you open the page. About every 5 pages will be a full horizontal spread. I want to include at least 100 pieces at a minimum, and I'm currently about 44 images into it. Looks great so far, but very time consuming.

Asking my photographer friends for help here, any advice please post in the notes as this may also help someone else in the future.

Ausgangspunkt ist hier die Münchenreise (07.02.-14.02.2024) mit Ausstellungsbesuchen (Pinakothek der Moderne mit Paula Scher; Museum Brandhorst) und Fotoserien in der City sowie im bayrischen Umfeld.

Konzeption: vektorisierte Fotografien (Inkscape) in Verbindung mit grafischen Formen sowie diversen Überlagerungsmodi in den Ebenen Schichten. Foto Quellen sind Baustellen, Schaufenster und bekannte Stadtmotive. Viele Jahre den Park des Schlosses besucht, nun erstmalig auch die Innenräume mit dem prächtigen Saal mit vielen beeindruckenden Details (Steinerner Saal im Mittelpavillon mit großen Kronleuchtern, Schönheitengalerie, Königin Zimmer uvm.).

'Monumente sollen stehen oder nichts - Halle/Saale’ Digital Collage, 375 x 375 mm, 2023 Fine Art Pigment Print under Acrylic Glass, Black Aluminium Art Box

Based on the series 'Monuments should stay or nothing', which deals with Ernst Thälmann, his monuments in the GDR and the treatment of other socialist monuments after the political change in 1989, this picture cycle deals with places that bore the name Ernst Thälmann and have disappeared.

The beginning of this new series is Ernst-Thälmann-Platz in Halle/Saale, which is probably the most radical urban redevelopment in the GDR. The square, which is now called Riebeck-Platz again, has undergone a complete renovation and dismantling over the last twenty years. Just as the GDR ensemble erased all traces of pre-war development, so that no element of the original development exists today.

In the graphic implementation I use the socialist folklore typical of the GDR, from the oak veneer to the green patch with anachronistic serif lettering.

Gekommen, um zu bleiben: Presseclub Niederrhein lud zur Talkrunde über Künstliche Intelligenz im Journalismus

KI: Künstliche Intelligenz. Aus allen Seiten prasselt dieses Schlagwort auf die Menschheit ein. Und – schlechte Nachricht für alle, die davon nichts mehr hören wollen – das wird sich auch nicht mehr ändern. „Wir sind gekommen, um zu bleiben!“ Mit diesem Zitat aus einem Song der deutschen Pop-Rock-Band „Wir sind Helden“, machte Jörg Schieb plakativ klar, dass künstliche Intelligenz, wie zum Beispiel ChatGPT, ab sofort zu unserer Lebenswirklichkeit dazugehört – ob wir wollen oder nicht. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_5GsY9eVwk Jörg Schieb ist Digital-Experte der ARD und Autor zahlreicher Sachbücher im Bereich Programmierung, Anwendungssoftware und Digitalisierung. Er und Dr. Anne Krum, Chefredakteurin Digitales der Funke Mediengruppe in NRW, diskutierten mit Sigrid Baum, Vorsitzende des Presseclubs Niederrhein (PCN) und Markus Helmich, PCN-Geschäftsführer, beim PCN-Mittwochs-Talk über Chancen, Gefahren und Veränderungen im Journalismus durch Künstliche Intelligenz. „KO durch KI? Wenn ChatGPT und Co. uns das Schreiben abnehmen“ – unter diesem Thema stand der Talk. Rund 50 Zuhörer waren der Einladung des PCN zur Veranstaltung gefolgt, die nach vier Jahren Pause erstmals wieder stattfinden konnte. Partner der Veranstaltung ist seit vielen Jahren die Sparkasse am Niederrhein, die den Heinrich Goldberg Saal ihrer Zweigstelle in Neukirchen-Vluyn für die Talkrunde zur Verfügung stellte. Sigrid Baum dankte dem Vorsitzenden des Vorstands Giovanni Malaponti ausdrücklich für die langjährige Gastfreundschaft. Schon zu Beginn zeigte Jörg Schieb in einem kurzen Impulsvortrag auf, dass die Fähigkeiten Künstlicher Intelligenz umfassend sind und die Auswirkungen einen Paradigmenwechsel in der journalistischen Arbeit bedeuten. Denn alles, was Journalisten nutzen – wie Texte, Bilder, Videos und Sprache – kann mit Hilfe künstlicher Intelligenz erzeugt und kaum nachweisbar manipuliert werden. Täuschend real wirkende Fotos von Papst Franziskus in einer hippen Winterjacke oder von der angeblichen Verhaftung Donald Trumps machten jüngst deutlich, dass (journalistische) Wahrhaftigkeit mit konsequenter und dauerhafter Überprüfung einhergehen muss. Anne Krum sieht deshalb in der journalistischen Sorgfaltspflicht eine noch wichtigere Aufgabe, die immer mehr Zeit in Anspruch nehmen wird. Denn, wie Jörg Schieb deutlich machte, die Produktion von möglicherweise gefälschten Texten, Fotos, Videos, Sprachbeiträgen sei inzwischen nur noch „ein Kinderspiel“. Anne Krum berichtete, dass auch Verlage aktuell testen, welche Möglichkeiten durch künstliche Intelligenz bereitgestellt werden können, um beispielsweise wiederkehrende, nicht-kreative Arbeitsprozesse im Redaktionsalltag zu automatisieren. Ziel sei auch, mehr Freiräume für die eigentliche journalistische Arbeit - wie beispielsweise Recherche und Einordnung - zu erhalten. Dass Redakteursstellen in Zukunft wegfallen, weil digitale Programme mit Unterstützung künstlicher Intelligenz zunehmend redaktionelle Aufgaben übernehmen könnten, hält sie dabei für sehr wahrscheinlich. Dies läge auch am wirtschaftlichen Druck, den die Verlage seit einigen Jahren zum Beispiel aufgrund drastisch zurückgehender Werbeeinnahmen spürten. Wie wichtig es ist, dass sich Lehrbetrieb und Wissensvermittlung der jungen Menschen durch das Auftreten künstlicher Intelligenz nun verändern müssen, darin waren sich alle Teilnehmer des PCN-Mittwochs-Talk einig.
