hello! i don't know anything about digital art or tablets but it's something i'd like to try out. i was wondering if you know of any affordable tablets that you don't have to hook up to a computer?
So the fortunate thing is that tablets have gotten a LOT cheaper especially with other companies like Huion and XP-Pen stepping up to offer competitive prices compared to Wacom, which is notoriously expensive.
That said, the unfortunate thing is that the cheapest tablets on the market are the ones that you have to hook up to a PC (these are typically desk tablets, i.e. the ones that you basically use as a computer mouse because there are no screens built in to them).
There are PC tablets where they're all in one PC's that offer tablet screens (I used to use a Cintiq Companion 2 which was exactly that) but they're INCREDIBLY expensive and honestly, not much better than just getting an entry level PC and screen tablet / monitor + desk tablet. It's definitely not something you'd want to get if you haven't tried out digital art before either, because there's a risk in that in and of itself - you haven't done it before, so you're not guaranteed to stick with it. And I say that because digital art in and of itself is a medium, there's a learning curve to it even if you already have foundational knowledge in traditional art (though that foundational knowledge will help a lot) and it's not as easy or simple as just pressing some buttons and making art appear. So the last thing you're gonna want to do is spend a whole bunch of money on a drawing tablet / digital art software if you wind up not liking it in the long run.
So I would say your best option for trying out digital art without losing out on a whole lot of money if you wind up not enjoying it (and if you want something that doesn't require hooking up to a PC) would be a Samsung tablet or iPad - and I say that because if you DON'T end up creating digital art in the long term, you'll still have a handy portable PC that you can use for other things. You can get iPads and Samsung tablets at used prices through pawn shops, local marketplaces, etc. or if you have strong rep with your phone company, you might be able to snag a deal next time you renew your phone plan (I would recommend checking around back-to-school season or Christmas/Black Friday/etc. as that's when phone companies offer crazy deals where you can get tablets and accessories basically for free LMAO)
Just make sure you do your research on what tablets offer what in terms of pen and software compatibility, some tablets don't work with pens, others only work with specific kinds of pens, etc. For iPads, you'll typically want something that will ideally work with the Apple Pencil 2, as that's the newest model of the Apple Pencil (and it has that fun way of charging where you can just stick the pen to the side of the tablet and it magnetizes/charges from your iPad's battery).
I can't really give advice on the Samsung tablets as I've never used them, so do your research for that one, there are loads of videos online that talk about all the different models and benefits. Just note that if you want to use Procreate specifically, you'll need an iPad as it's an iOS-only app. Clip Studio and Adobe products , on the other hand, are offered on virtually all mobile devices and software!
I hope that helps! Good luck!! <3

assigning the coffee bean gang (in my au where they start college in 2005) actual phones instead of vaguely describing random phones for 2004-2006 stuff
Tumblr media
(also laptops) (unnecessarily in-depth)
considering i'm on 2007 now in terms of plot i prob should have done 2007 instead but peter's going to be using his (prepaid/for emergencies) Nokia until the heat death of the universe probably (or at least until it can no longer connect to networks) (unless... he IS getting a BS in engineering...) (no jk i'm sure the fantastic four will hook him up when they give him a suit in 2016) so that's really nbd.
peter's Nokia is obviously an affordable phone designed to be no-frills, durable, and also designed for use with prepaid cards apparently (at least according to wikipedia) so i figured that would fit. it's not the notoriously indestructible 3310 but it's close enough considering most of their phones, including this one, have a reputation for durability, so, also important for a man like peter lol
i picked flash's cause it looked cute and seemed affordable... Like yeah I can see a jocky little closeted queer in 2004 getting that... I just think it looks nice and i can see him using it for a bit. also cause i wanted him to have a flip phone.
MJ's is FLASHY and when i saw it i was like she HAS to have this—the cover is customizable too so it's like. okay. girl. yes. it seems like it comes in other colors, though it was unclear to me which were available in the US, but the white and blue seems like the most common/popular color option and also the other options were all either black/navy/boring or else... blue and red... and as funny as it would be to give MJ a spider-man colored phone i didn't want to do that XD though the white and blue gives me huge johnny storm/fantastic four vibes.
i didn't mean to give all the poor kids Nokias but it turns out that there were not a whole lot of companies making cellphones in the mid 2000s and nokia has a lot of entry-level/affordable phones lol
harry gets the high end sony phone: a fancy camera phone (k700) that he then replaces with that nifty-looking sony walkman swivel phone in the beginning of 2006. plus the white and orange color scheme suits him imo and he seems like he (and mj) would be the most hip to music.
i also didn't intend to give gwen and harry both the same brand of phone but when i saw the z500a i was like... that's JUST "what if gwen was turned into a phone" lmao like the round shapes... the blue color... there she is. and it seems reasonably priced but not cheapo which seems about right for gwen.
i also decided that in the end of 2005 Norman is either gifted (you know, like corporate networking gifts between CEOs) or buys himself a Samsung, Bang & Olufsen Serene phone, which is a very strange, square, business-oriented fashion phone indeed.
Tumblr media
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serene_(phone)
also it's $1275 which. For a regular clamshell camera phone... IS insane. But it is form over function and he doesn't exactly use it for texting or photos. It's only for calls. Also it's European.
idk if it was ever available in the states but he's norman osborn, he can do whatever the fuck he wants
As far as computers, BOY it was HARD to figure out which laptops were available at what price points in the mid 2000s cause basically everything prior to 2006 on the wayback machine was just not archived all the way or redirected to errors 💀 i spent way too long trying to find a good laptop for flash than is reasonable for something that gets mentioned only every once in a while.
Peter doesn't have a laptop yet, I'm still figuring out when I want him to get one. He's taking some programming classes, but his focus is on materials science and shit like thermodynamics so honestly I think he can scrape by using the school computers and computer labs. I was thinking possibly 2010, especially since he actually has a job then (well, it's part time, but it's more stable than the Bugle stuff on its own) Peter's only source of money from 2005-2009 is like... student loans and Bugle freelance so I'm like, eh.
but for Flash I decided he would have an Acer Aspire, NOT because I have one, because I fucking hate this thing, but because it was the cheapest one I could find scouring the wayback machine mostly fruitlessly. Like. I THINK it's a <$700 laptop. but also. I'm really not sure.
so Flash's dad gets him a 15" Acer Aspire 3000 for his birthday a few months before the gang starts college, so that's the computer Peter is using half of freshman year since Flash lets him borrow it. It's ugly but that's not the point. My main goal for Flash's laptop was "cheap as fuck" cause it may be a birthday present but there's no way his dad paid out the ass for a laptop for his idiot son
Tumblr media
Gwen gets a 12" Apple iBook G4 (late 2004). So it's just like. white. The compact size and stuff seems like it would suit her, though the internet says the ibooks had a lot of... problems. I considered giving her a more sciencey laptop but this was a christmas present she got in senior year of high school and her original plan IS a nursing degree so I figure she would just use whatever mid-to-high end computer and she just seems like an apple girlie to me
Tumblr media
this was, by the way, apparently Apple's "budget" laptop. But the thing about budget laptops in 2005 was that apparently they were all still $1000. lmao, sorry, "$999."
anyway
Harry gets something EXPENSIVE. And I know what you're thinking—he's a macbook boy right? Well, no, because those didn't exist in 2005. And he's got this GOAL right? He wants to impress his dad, he wants to be Smart like Gwen and Peter, he wants to be the STEM Student with a STEM Student Computer.
So Harry gets a 14" IBM ThinkPad T43.
Tumblr media
Which also happened to cost over $2000.
I know that's like, well shouldn't PETER, the ENGINEERING student have that but Peter is poor. Peter is not buying a $2000+ business laptop with a *checks notes* built-in fingerprint reader.
Later on after macbooks are invented (in 2006) and harry is out of college (in 2009) he's definitely going to be the type of person who owns a macbook, and when they introduce rose gold (in 2016) you know he'll be all over that. the ThinkPad is just not very stylish or his speed at all. he's an artist at heart being pushed into a STEM box.
Also at home, he DOES have an iMac. Specifically a PowerMac G5.
Tumblr media
Why did I pick that one? Simple: it was the most expensive one i could see on apple's website in the wayback machine.
god apple keyboards are so fucking tiny.
MJ also doesn't have a laptop for similar reasons as Peter (they're fucking expensive and she's poor) but I'm considering giving her one of those compact mini computers in 2006, like, oh you have two phones? No it's actually a PSP—sorry I mean a pocket computer based on PSP technology lmao
talkin about the Sony Mylo COM-1:
Tumblr media
LOOK AT IT. It's too groovy not to give her.
also it's cheaper than a laptop by at LEAST $400, and doesn't need a phone plan or anything so it seems like it would be of use to her for instant messaging and stuff. she still has a phone though. she just also has a not-phone-technically-computer that looks exactly like a phone. actually idk if this thing can send calls... did they have wifi calling in 2006? i think so... well either way.
ah, clearly time well spent today.
still don't know when or what kind of computer peter gets. i think i'll just have him build a PC or something later on, when he's in grad school, or maybe a netbook
update: harry is going to buy a macbook air in 2008 and give his thinkpad to peter who will use it until it breaks (and (free?) upgrade it to windows 7 but still be using office 2003 in 2010, as well as having a linux stick cause he's that kind of nerd, and probably openoffice.org) -
BUT I'm still having him build a compact PC in 2010 with hobie's help that should cost <$400 and will run Ubuntu (because he's THAT kind of fucking nerd) (and because Ubuntu is free, otherwise this would not be a <$400 pc) that he mostly uses for homework in his masters program, watching porn—i mean movies, and light stuff, though possibly also may have some kind of CAD software as well... cannot run games but peter isn't a gamer anyway. he's not even much of a programmer or 3d modeler tbh (though he DOES do these things intermittently for spidey stuff)... but being able to do homework at home instead of the library has its upsides (plus he can still use the laptop harry gave him when he's out of the house so he doesn't need to rely on library or computer lab for word processing etc.)
(also he does analog film photography but being able to edit scans of his photos at home is a nice luxury)

In this article, we will explore the latest Vivo mobile prices in Pakistan, highlight some of the most popular models, and discuss why this brand is a favorite among Pakistanis.
Vivo’s Impact on the Pakistani Mobile Market
Vivo entered the Pakistani market a few years ago and has since built a reputation for offering value-for-money smartphones. Competing with other major brands like Samsung, Huawei, and Xiaomi, Vivo Mobile Price in Pakistan has consistently provided phones with cutting-edge technology, impressive camera quality, and powerful performance. In a market where consumers are looking for budget-friendly yet high-performing devices, Vivo's success can be attributed to its ability to balance quality and cost.
Vivo Mobile Price in Pakistan: Current Range
As of 2024, Vivo offers a wide range of smartphones in Pakistan, from entry-level phones to high-end models. The price of Vivo mobiles in Pakistan can vary significantly depending on the model and its features. Entry-level phones such as the Vivo Y series are priced affordably, while the more premium models, like the Vivo V and X series, come with higher price tags due to their advanced features.
Popular Vivo Models and Their Prices in Pakistan
Tumblr media
Vivo Y Series The Y series is Vivo's budget-friendly lineup and offers smartphones at affordable prices. The Vivo Y20, Y21, and Y33s are some of the popular models in this series. Prices for the Y series generally range from PKR 20,000 to PKR 35,000. These phones offer decent performance, good battery life, and are equipped with basic features, making them a great choice for students and budget-conscious buyers.
Vivo V Series The V series is Vivo’s mid-range offering and is aimed at users who want better features and performance than what the Y series provides. With models like the Vivo V23, V21, and V25e, the V series is known for its stylish design, powerful cameras, and fast processors. These phones are priced between PKR 50,000 to PKR 80,000, making them suitable for those who want premium features without breaking the bank.
Vivo X Series The Vivo X series is the brand’s flagship lineup and offers the latest innovations and highest specifications. Prices for the X series start from around PKR 100,000 and can go up to PKR 150,000 or more, depending on the specific model.
Factors Influencing Vivo Mobile Prices in Pakistan
Tumblr media
The price of a Vivo mobile in Pakistan is influenced by several factors, including the model, its features, and market demand. Here are some of the primary aspects that impact the price:
Camera Technology Vivo is known for its camera innovations, particularly in its high-end models. Features like AI-enhanced photography, night mode, and professional-grade lenses drive up the price of Vivo smartphones. Models in the V and X series come with advanced camera systems, which make them more expensive compared to the Y series.
Processor and Performance High-performance processors, more RAM, and better GPU support generally lead to higher prices. While the entry-level Y series offers decent performance for everyday tasks, the V and X series are powered by faster processors like the Qualcomm Snapdragon or MediaTek chips, making them more suitable for gaming and multitasking.
Battery Life Battery life is a crucial factor for many users in Pakistan, where reliable access to charging can sometimes be limited. Vivo phones typically come with large batteries and fast-charging capabilities, which add to the phone's overall value and cost.
Display Technology The display quality and screen size are also major factors affecting the price. Vivo’s flagship models feature AMOLED displays with high refresh rates, providing a smoother and more vivid viewing experience. This technology is more expensive and, therefore, reflects in the pricing of premium models like the X and V series.
Storage and Memory Storage capacity and RAM are other factors that contribute to a smartphone’s price. Vivo smartphones come with various configurations, offering more storage and memory at higher price points. Phones with 128GB or 256GB of storage, combined with 8GB or 12GB of RAM, tend to be priced higher than models with lower storage and memory options.
Why Vivo is Popular in Pakistan
There are several reasons behind Vivo's popularity in Pakistan, ranging from its pricing strategy to its understanding of local market needs.
Affordability Vivo provides smartphones that cater to a wide range of consumers, from those looking for affordable devices to those seeking high-end features. This flexibility in pricing has helped the brand capture a diverse audience.
Quality Features Whether it’s the camera, battery, or overall performance, Vivo ensures that even its budget-friendly models are packed with quality features. This focus on delivering value has earned Vivo a loyal customer base in Pakistan.
Frequent Model Updates Vivo frequently introduces new models, ensuring that it remains competitive in the fast-evolving smartphone market. With regular software updates and new product releases, the brand keeps consumers engaged and loyal.

The price of Vivo mobiles in Pakistan varies based on the model, features, and specifications. From the budget-friendly Y series to the premium X series, Vivo offers smartphones for everyone. Whether you are a student looking for an affordable device or a tech enthusiast wanting the latest features, Vivo has something for you.

**The Evolution of Smartphones: A Journey Through Technology**
**Introduction**
The smartphone has become an indispensable part of modern life, transforming the way we communicate, work, and entertain ourselves. From their humble beginnings as basic mobile phones to the powerful mini-computers we carry in our pockets today, Samsung Latest Phone in 2024 smartphones have undergone a remarkable evolution. This article explores the history of smartphones, their technological advancements, and what the future may hold for these devices.
Tumblr media
**1. The Birth of Mobile Phones**
The journey of smartphones begins with the invention of mobile phones in the early 1980s. The first commercially available mobile phone, the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X, was released in 1983. It was a bulky device, weighing nearly 2.5 pounds and measuring 10 inches in height. Despite its size, it was revolutionary, allowing users to make calls without being tethered to a landline.
During the late 1980s and early 1990s, mobile phones became more compact and affordable. The introduction of digital cellular technology (2G) marked a significant advancement, enabling better call quality and more efficient use of the radio spectrum. However, these early mobile phones were primarily designed for voice communication, lacking the features that would later define smartphones.
**2. The Emergence of Smartphones**
The term "smartphone" was first coined in the late 1990s. In 1992, IBM introduced the Simon Personal Communicator, which is widely regarded as the first smartphone. The Simon featured a touchscreen interface, email capability, and even a calendar and address book. Although it was ahead of its time, its high price and limited battery life prevented it from achieving widespread adoption.
The real turning point for smartphones came in the early 2000s with the introduction of devices like the BlackBerry and Palm Treo. These devices combined mobile phone functionality with email and internet access, catering to business professionals who needed to stay connected on the go. The BlackBerry, in particular, became synonymous with mobile email, thanks to its physical keyboard and secure messaging capabilities.
**3. The iPhone Revolution**
In 2007, Apple launched the iPhone, a device that would redefine the smartphone landscape. The iPhone combined a sleek design with a user-friendly interface, featuring a multi-touch screen that allowed users to interact with their devices in a completely new way. The introduction of the App Store in 2008 further revolutionized Samsung Latest Phone in 2024 the smartphone experience, enabling third-party developers to create applications that expanded the functionality of the device

Samsung’s Galaxy Ring: The Game-Changer in Smart Wearables?
Smart rings have been around for nearly a decade, but Samsung’s new Galaxy Ring is turning heads. While it might not be a revolutionary leap, its sleek design and advanced features are making waves. Priced at $399.99, the Galaxy Ring promises to deliver discreet and comprehensive health tracking, all while fitting seamlessly into Samsung's ecosystem. But is it truly worth the hype?
The Galaxy Ring: A New Contender in Smart Wearables
Until now, the Oura Ring has dominated the smart ring market, becoming a favorite among celebrities and health enthusiasts. Despite its popularity, Oura hasn’t become a household name. Samsung's entry into this niche could change that, bringing more visibility and credibility to smart rings. So, what makes the Galaxy Ring special?
Design and Comfort: A Perfect Fit
One of the standout features of the Galaxy Ring is its design. Measuring 7mm wide and 2.6mm thick, it’s the thinnest and most comfortable smart ring available. Its concave shape not only adds a slimming effect but also prevents it from digging into neighboring fingers. Whether you're making a fist or lifting weights, this ring feels just right.
Samsung offers a $10 sizing kit, crucial for finding the perfect fit. Given that finger sizes can change throughout the day, especially after a workout, proper sizing ensures comfort and accuracy in tracking.
Health Tracking: What’s Inside?
The Galaxy Ring tracks sleep, blood oxygen levels, skin temperature, heart rate, and activities. It provides a daily sleep score, sleep coaching, and a new Energy Score to gauge recovery. However, it lacks some advanced features found in the Galaxy Watch, like FDA-cleared sleep apnea detection.
As a sleep tracker, the Galaxy Ring is reliable, offering data comparable to the Oura Ring. However, it struggles with accurate blood oxygen readings, especially for side sleepers. Activity tracking is hit-or-miss; while daily steps are fairly accurate, running metrics can be off.
Battery Life: A Notable Advantage
One of the Galaxy Ring’s strengths is its battery life. On its own, it lasts 6-7 days, depending on the size. When paired with a Galaxy Watch, battery life extends by an extra 30%. This is a significant improvement over other smart rings, which typically need charging every 2-4 days.
The charging case is another thoughtful addition. Unlike the puck-shaped docks used by other brands, Samsung’s case keeps the ring secure and portable. It holds 1.5 charges, making it easy to power up on the go.
Integration with Samsung’s Ecosystem
The Galaxy Ring shines brightest within Samsung’s ecosystem. While it works with any Android phone supporting the Samsung Health app, Galaxy device users get the full experience. Features like Samsung Find, enhanced Energy Score insights, and the cool double pinch gesture are exclusive to Galaxy phones.
Using the Galaxy Ring alongside a Galaxy Watch optimizes health tracking and battery life. The Samsung Health app intelligently switches between devices, ensuring you always get the best data without draining your battery.
Is the Galaxy Ring Worth It?
It’s still an investment. It’s best suited for those already invested in Samsung’s ecosystem. While it offers excellent hardware and a comfortable design, its full potential is unlocked only with other Samsung devices.

For Samsung loyalists, the Galaxy Ring could be a valuable addition. For others, especially those looking for a standalone device, alternatives like the cheaper Ultrahuman Ring Air might be more appealing.
The Future of Smart Rings
Samsung’s Galaxy Ring is more than just a smart ring; it’s a glimpse into the future of wearable technology. If successful, it could pave the way for more multi-wearable ecosystems from major tech players like Apple and Google. For now, it stands as a testament to Samsung’s innovation and a potential game-changer in the world of smart wearables.
Curious about the Galaxy Ring? Dive into the world of smart wearables and see if this new contender fits your lifestyle.

S23 Ultra Teardown: Right to Repair Forcing Samsung Towards Repairable DesignSamsung's Galaxy S23 Ultra is making waves in the tech world, not just for its impressive hardware and software but also for its evolving approach to repairability. The South Korean tech giant seems to be catching up with Apple in various aspects, and while tech reviewers debate the merits of these advancements, our focus is on the S23 Ultra's internal design and its implications for repair enthusiasts.Unveiling the Internals: A Peek Inside the S23 UltraBefore diving into the disassembly, we took a look at the x-rays of the S23 Ultra, courtesy of Creative Electron. Initially, we mistakenly used x-rays of last year's S22 Ultra, but upon comparing both models, we found them strikingly similar inside and out. However, whispers of a significant change to the battery hinted that this teardown might reveal some interesting developments.Entering Through the Back PanelAs with previous Android teardowns, the entry point is through the back panel. This time, we used the Anti-clamp to work its magic on the adhesive, eliminating the need for cumbersome tools. The S-Pen was removed first, followed by the extraction of 17 Phillips screws. The NFC coil and upper bracket came away as a single piece, exposing the internal connectors.A Friendly Surprise: Battery Pull-TabOne of the most notable changes in the S23 Ultra's design is the inclusion of a battery pull-tab. Unlike the stretch-release tabs found in some other devices, this pull-tab is a significant step towards making battery replacements more feasible. However, it's not without its challenges. The pull-tab can be tricky to use, especially with sweaty or dry hands, but it signifies Samsung's acknowledgment of the importance of repair-friendly designs. The Evolution of Battery ReplacementDespite its initial difficulties, the battery pull-tab is a welcome addition. It suggests that Samsung is beginning to prioritize user-friendly repair features. This move is consistent across the S23 and S23+ models, indicating a broader commitment to repairability rather than restricting it to a single high-end device. This approach contrasts with Apple's more exclusive design choices, such as those seen in the iPhone 14.Exploring Other Components: The Periscope CameraWith the battery pull-tab making a positive impression, we proceeded to examine other parts of the phone, starting with the periscope camera. The 10x optical module appeared unchanged from the previous model, sliding around on tiny plastic ball bearings and driven by electromagnetic coils. Samsung's curved screens, while visually appealing, remain a challenge to remove due to the strong adhesive used. Despite reports of under-screen bubbles on some units, our S23 Ultra displayed no such defects. The Bigger Picture: Samsung's Repairability JourneyWhile the S23 Ultra might seem like a mere hardware update, its inclusion of the battery pull-tab marks a significant step forward in Samsung's repairability journey. Compared to earlier models, the Galaxy line has made considerable progress since the Galaxy S6's release in 2015. Although the S23 Ultra doesn't reach the repairability levels of the iPhone 14, it avoids software locks that hinder third-party repairs.Challenges and Opportunities: The Path AheadSamsung's recent crackdown on third-party OLED suppliers presents a challenge to the growing demand for repairable devices and a circular economy. However, the S23 Ultra's design changes, especially the battery pull-tab, suggest a shift towards more consumer-friendly repair options. The S23 Ultra earns a repairability score of 4/10, with the potential for an additional two points if Samsung provides parts and manuals in the future.Looking Forward: The Role of Right to RepairThe inclusion of a battery pull-tab, even if not perfect, is evidence of the positive impact of the Right to Repair movement. This movement advocates for consumers' ability to repair and maintain their devices, promoting sustainability and reducing electronic waste.
As Samsung and other manufacturers respond to these demands, we can expect further improvements in device design and repairability.Gadget Kings: Your Trusted Repair PartnerFor those looking to repair their Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra or other devices, Gadget Kings offers expert repair services. Based in Australia, Gadget Kings specializes in a wide range of phone repair services, from battery replacements to screen repairs. Their experienced technicians ensure high-quality service, using genuine parts to restore your device to its optimal condition. Gadget Kings is committed to supporting the Right to Repair movement, providing customers with reliable and accessible repair options across various locations. Conclusion: A Brighter Future for RepairabilitySamsung's Galaxy S23 Ultra represents a step in the right direction for repairability. While there's still room for improvement, the inclusion of repair-friendly features like the battery pull-tab demonstrates progress. As the Right to Repair movement gains momentum, we can look forward to a future where more devices are designed with repairability in mind. Whether it's through improved design, better access to parts, or supportive repair services like those offered by Gadget Kings, the path to a more sustainable and repair-friendly tech industry is becoming clearer.Thank you for joining us in this teardown and review. Stay tuned for more insights and updates on the latest in tech repair and innovation.

Try This On For Size
It’s funny how sometimes all you have to do is repackage something, and people will think it’s pretty cool now. It’s just that nothing has changed other than how the proposition was framed. For a variety of reasons, when the idea was hatched, it just wasn’t ready for prime time…yet.
Apparently, though, now that AI is a household word, virtual try-on is acceptable. In fact, a recent survey by Adobe showed that 71% of shoppers think that using AI to purchase clothing online could help them be assured of getting the right fit. Because AI is cool, right?
Walmart made significant inroads in 2022 with their purchase of Zeekit, a tech company that provides the software for a virtual fitting room, and subsequent launch of their Be Your Own Model application. Users have to upload some personal information—I know, a red flag for many before AI changed everything—as well as use the camera feature on their phones. But when the program launched in September that year, more than 270,000 items were available for virtual try-on.
Tumblr media
It’s an idea that has been trying to find life for many more years, though. Converse used a virtual try-on application in 2012, and I recall reading of Dillard’s using fitting room mirrors outfitted with what was then cutting-edge programming to do the same thing, albeit actually in the store. Today, though, the technology has advanced far enough that this can be done from anywhere.
Whenever cameras and companies are involved, though, people start to get nervous. Privacy concerns become top-of-mind as they ponder what nefarious uses might happen should there be a data breach. First, Walmart could be hacked. Then there is the sobering reminder that anything we do in the Walmart app necessarily also involves our phone (which is made by Apple, Samsung, or Google), as well as our cell phone service provider. There are thus several points of contact.
And then there’s just the general data points, including height, weight, and so forth. We might be venturing into HIPAA territory here. Inferences can be made about a person’s fitness level, and by extension, their health, just by noting their clothing sizes, and especially if changes have occurred over time.
Still, now that the notion of virtual try-on has been repackaged as using AI—which it most certainly used all along—it’s suddenly a lot more palatable. How can that be?
As much as the world was shaking in its boots in November of 2022 when ChatGPT became available for the general public to use—and only two months after Walmart’s entry—we have started to warm to the idea. It is normal for people to recoil at the thought of a revolutionary new concept, even if that idea had already been going on for a long time. ChatGPT made it real and mainstream.
It’s still imperfect; we are but in the infancy of AI. Heck, last week I had an undergrad student concerned because Grammarly indicated their writing was of AI origin. It’s just that it wasn’t. Oh, and never mind that Grammarly uses AI, as they say in their ads. Go figure. An AI application said that AI had been used. The pot has called the kettle black.
I’m good with this, even though thus far Walmart has only promoted it with women’s clothing. If they were smart, they should push into men’s clothing, because we men are notorious for disliking clothes shopping in the first place, and definitely don’t want to be wasting time in fitting rooms.
For that matter, this helps solve other problems that women perceive to be real, which orbits around privacy concerns in fitting rooms. Are there secret cameras and Peeping Toms watching remotely? I know women who refuse to try on clothes in stores, and instead will buy a bunch they can try on at home, and then return the ones that don’t fit.
Lastly, there is the long-running criticism about online clothes shopping, which, of course, features concerns about fit, color, feel, and all those things. While the application can never convey the feel and true color adequately, at least the odds are much better that the garment will fit.
Just as AI is, generally speaking, the future of us all, so is virtual try-on. The Jetsons have come home to roost.

Xiaomi's Note 13 Pro+ is a Big Leap for the Redmi Brand
Tumblr media
Xiaomi finally announced its much-awaited Redmi Note 13 series, which is comprised of several models designed for entry-level and midrange markets worldwide - we have the Redmi Note 13 Pro+ 5G, Redmi Note 13 Pro 5G, Redmi Note 13 Pro, Redmi Note 13 5G, and the base model Redmi Note 13. With that in mind, the 13 Pro+ 5G is essentially the flagship model of this year's Redmi Note series, and it offers some rather compelling features that'll make you look twice at the phone's price tag. Priced at around £449 (cheaper than a lot of midrange competitors), the Redmi Note 13 Pro+ 5G packs some significant upgrades in terms of performance, camera hardware, and even design, making it a tempting upgrade especially for Xiaomi fans. Design and Display In front is a 6.67-inch curved AMOLED display with a 1.5K resolution, up to 120Hz refresh rate, as well as a peak brightness of 1800 nits. Redmi's Note series handsets have always been among the more impressive devices in Xiaomi's lineup, but the Note 13 Pro+ really amps up the hardware offerings, and it's great to see such specifications on a relatively affordable smartphone. As for design, the phone comes with flat polycarbonate edges which are contoured around the curved display in front, and features Gorilla Glass Victus protection for the display. Speaking about the curved glass screen, not everyone will be a fan given that big names such as Google and Samsung are stepping away from the trend, although it's a hardware element that's consistently been incorporated by Chinese manufacturers into their handsets. The entire device does come with IP68 dust and water resistance, which is a nice addition at this price point and adds a bit of durability that's always welcome on fragile devices such as smartphones. Internals and Cameras The Note 13 Pro+ 5G's sub-500 price tag doesn't mean that it skips out on performance as well - the phone runs on the MediaTek Dimensity 7200 Ultra chipset, one of the more impressive SoCs from the Taiwanese manufacturer. This is backed by up to 12GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage, although there is a slightly cheaper 8GB + 256GB configuration available for folks who don't feel the need to max out their device's storage and memory. For software, the phone runs on Android 13 with MIUI on top, which is a bit surprising given that Android 14 has been out for a while now. The phone is powered by a 5,000 mAh capacity battery, which comes with support for 120Hz charging - again, it's nice to see features like these make their way on a phone in this price bracket. As for optics, the phone features an f/1.65 200MP main sensor, an f/2.2 8MP ultra wide sensor, and an f/2.4 2MP macro camera, complemented by a 16MP sensor in front for selfies and video calls. The Redmi camera app does come with some exclusive effects and modes from Xiaomi, as well as optical image stabilization. Video recording on the other hand maxes out at 4K resolution at 30 frames per second. With all that being said, the Redmi Note 13 Pro+ 5G is a pretty good example of what Xiaomi's Redmi brand is all about - affordable hardware without compromises in performance. Sure, some folks might have reservations about the curved display and mostly plastic build, but the phone manages to impress in terms of performance, and the added upgrade to camera hardware is something to look forward to. The Redmi Note 13 Pro+ 5G will be available starting January 18 from Xiaomi and select retailers. Read the full article
