random grishaverse facts/trivia (mostly tgt/kos, tbh), because i love useless details. Also, attempted organisation, because i like order too. + ft. my unwanted commentary
the darkling
has a sweet tooth
loves animals and nature in general
for those of you who have read demon in the woods, he got to meet the white tigers :)
his bedchamber walls are carved into trees bc he loves the woods
his favourite trees in particular are pine trees (or just evergreen trees in general)
he used to be afraid of the dark (many possibly worrying? interesting? implications to this; i won’t get into it here tho)
he likes bright colours, but wears black all the time basically for the aesthetic
he met his younger half-sister, Ulla, when he was a seer’s apprentice in Fjerda
the darkling is a musician! He plays the fiddle, and growing up, he played the balalaika and oud (i wonder if he can read tablature,,)
His father was a very powerful heartrender (maybe this is why the corporalki are valued so highly by him?)
genya
she got an amplifier between the end of R+R and the start of KoS (kestrel bones)
Genya used Dekora Nevich, the Ornamental Blade, to poison the King
It smells like cinnamon and is a warm golden colour
the royal family / nikolai’s bio family
the King once cut himself on his own sword
genya named the queen’s dog
until she was like 11, Genya was like the daughter the queen never had (omg i really wonder how Nikolai and Vasily felt about that? ik it’s not really mentioned, and Nik kinda acts like he just met Genya is S+S, but they must have been a lot closer, right?? I mean genya was almost always at the grand palace with Queen Tatiana, and nikolai just really wanted his parents’ attention, there must have been some kind of maybe one-sided jealousy/sibling rivalry thing, right?? I digress- for now)
also the queen in a dog person
p. sure Nikolai is a mommy’s boy
(possible explanation:) he looks exactly like his real father (except for his eyes). Nikolai even has the same laugh as Magnus
the queen was also fed up with Vasily and his horses
Vasily rides a white gelding horse and Nikolai rides a speckled grey horse (called Punchline)
speaking of, vasily is definitely a horse girl, but like... just the worst (darkling 🤝vasily)
Queen Tatiana’s letters to Magnus Opjer were “very racy”
She doesn’t approve of women in trousers
Linnea is ~1 year younger than Nikolai
she is good at math + studies engineering at ketterdam (I wonder if maybe she and Nikolai crossed paths when he was at uni- they’re around the same age, so maybe?)
The King and Queen hired a clown for nikolai’s 10th birthday (the worst birthday party he’d been to, inclusive of the night Vasily died, according to Nikolai)
Nikolai is afraid of spiders (and also clowns???)
nikolai:
he can juggle
Nikolai sucks at learning languages
he once spoke Fjerdan so badly a man named Knut offered him a ruby to stop
his Kerch seems pretty good tho
Nikolai met The Darkling when he was 14
Nikolai is a baritone (as is Jesper!)
In his free time, Nikolai writes bad poetry (remember that time he got stabbed w/ a letter opener bc his poetry sucked?)
he went through an emo phase/ existential crisis before becoming sturmhond.
during said emo phase, he wrote rhyming poetry pretty much exclusively
He also took philosophy classes at uni (PPE?)
alina:
alina tried on the same rose dress that the Queen watched vasily die in
Nikolai gifted Alina a VERY low-cut cobalt lace gown (In the words of Nadia, “The bodice might as well be cut to the navel.” )
Alina hates herring, but Zoya and Nikolai love it
She is VERY sarcastic and snarky!! I feel like this gets glossed over so much in the fandom, and just why?? (she’s so gloomy and over everything 90% of the time, i love it so much)
So this isn’t technically a fact-fact, but there is no way Alina wasn’t at least a little bit into women. Did you read how she talked abt genya? Zoya? there’s no way she wasn’t into them
Alina doesn’t really like hard cheese
zoya + zoyalai:
Zoya’s horse is called Serebrine
Zoya can use her lightning as a defibrillator (I’m sure other squallers can do this too with the right training)
Zoya likes Nikolai’s hands (and Nikolai likes Zoya’s feet lmao)
she has ‘weird (long?) incisors’
she definitely had a crush on Nikolai since Ruin and Rising
kaz:
Kaz grew up on a farm in Southern Kerch, in Lij
Kaz is a both a cat and a dog person  (he just likes strays)
Matthias is a dog person, obviously
All the other crows are cat people
He likes hot chocolate
both he and nikolai like brandy
hates cereal
Kaz is obsessed with magic + likes puzzles
actually very funny if he wasn’t terrifying (honestly?? at leat 70% of his dialogue is just witty quips/jokes)
Kaz’s right leg is the one he broke, and the dregs usually get their tattoo on their right forearm
the other crows:
Jesper has been known to go line-dancing (and would like country music)
Mal and Jesper were friends in S+S!! (Probably) Jesper has a not-really-secret crush on sturmhond.
He also had a VERY not secret crush on Kaz before wylan, ofc
Matthias’ middle name is Benedik
Nina would win in an arm wrestling contest against Jesper
Inej has a thing for Kaz’s eyes
Nina was at the orphanage with the other grisha kids in R+R
In the opening scene of CK, Jesper was wearing a navy waistcoat with little gold stars (his fashion is just top tier honestly)
grisha- powers, etc.:
A solar eclipse would have no effect on the Darkling’s powers, but it would make it harder for Alina to summon.
Fabrikators can make flowers bloom
The twins have shark teeth amplifiers
Adrik and Leoni are saints
general world stuff:
Gay marriage is legal in Kerch!
there was a landbridge connecting Shu Han and Kerch but the council of tides covered it
Antimony is used as mascara
kruge is pale purple paper currency
ravkan currency has Nikolai’s face on it (ig not anymore tho?)
Hringkälla is celebrated on March 20th
the distance between Ivets and Os Alta is only about 100 miles? (i’m just going to willfully ignore this, because thats,, so small?)
Mermaids and dragons exist(ed) in the grishaverse
misc:
the daughter of the duke of ivets has a daughter who can play the harp
there is not fourth tale of krigi
The baroness Natasha Beritrova is fifty (as of KoS) and has lands near caryeva
Elke Marie Smit is from one of the most powerful Kerch families and is just 16 in KoS
Oncat is an orange tabby
Anya liked Joost a lot :( (I got way too attached to them at the start of SoC and was so sad + confused when they died lol)
david eats hard boiled eggs for his working days in the shops
‘Malyen’ is the Ravkan version of ‘Malcolm’ (very fitting)
Nikolai brought the kids at Keramzin toy boats + frequently sends Alina and Mal gifts
The triumvirate would also visit them every feast of Sankt Nikolai too :)
star signs / birthdays (ik the gv constellations aren’t the same as ours, but idc):
Inej: Cancer (june 21st - july 22nd)
Kaz: Capricorn (december 22nd - january 19th)
Nina: Leo (july 23rd - august 22nd)
Jesper: Gemini (may 21st - june 20th)
Matthias: Taurus (april 20th - may 20th)
Wylan: virgo (august 23rd - september 22nd)
Kuwei: aries (march 21st - april 19th)
Darkling: aries
Nikolai is most likely either a gemini or cancer (but he could also be a Leo or Taurus). Whatever it is, he is a summer baby.
Alina and Mal have the same birthday (they were given the Duke’s birthday when they came to the orphanage)
heights:
Jesper is 6’2” - 6’3”
Kaz is 6′
Matthias is 6’4
Nina is 5’9”-5’10”
Inej is 5’3” - 5’4”
Alina is ’short’ (5’3”?)
Mal and the Darkling are ‘tall’ (tbf, like all the characters are tall >:( I want my short people rights)
Nikolai  (well, stumhond, but i think they’re the same height) is described by Jesper as tall (so 6’2”+?? why is everyone so tall??? I-)
Zoya is several inches shorter than nina (zoyalai height difference lets go)
Kuwei is slightly shorter than Wylan (who is about 5’8”?)
there’s definitely more, so if you made it this far and have any more, pls add to the list!

Nekromant Reveal First Single from Upcoming Full-Length
~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~
Tumblr media
Art by Tessa Najjar
Hot damn! My week could not get off to a better start than with a new track by Sweden stoner doomers NEKROMANT. Some of you knew them way back when they were Serpent, then shuffled the deck a bit, adopting the name of their second album. The rebirth brought Mattias Ottosson (bass, vox), Joakim Olsson (drums), and Adam Lundqvist (guitars) right back into the spotlight again with the excellent Doom Charting debut, 'Snakes & Liars' (2017). There's still a lot of venom left, so this fall the Vänersborg trio are readying to strike once again. Today, Doomed & Stoned is bringing you the first single from their forthcoming LP, 'The Nekromant Lives' (2018).

"Wake from the dead to live again."
"Blood For Walpurgis" is a tight, twisted number about Walpurgis Night, named for the man held up by German believers as their emissary in battle against the wiles of the Devil and all them witches, in particular, which would come out to play on Hexennacht. To this day, Christians set bonfires ablaze in Saint Walpurga's name on the eve of April 30th, with hopes of chasing away demons of all kinds.
Nekromant's song holds less fascination with Walpurga than the whole underbelly of Walpurgis Night itself. Something is about to rise from the dead and torment the living and we get to hear the excitement of Sankt Walpurgisnacht from the perspective of one of its celebrants, with the hint that this necromancer, however malevolent, is desperately seeking to be reunited with a long lost lover. I have to say that the guitar play is an absolute delight to behold. It's crisp, vibrant, on-point, and harmonizes splendidly with the rhythm section, which bears the marks of seasoned musicianship. Can't wait for the full release!
Tumblr media
Look for The Nekromant Lives to emerge on vinyl and CD formats via Ripple Music on October 19th. In the meanwhile, soak in the new sounds of Nekromant (available Tuesday for download) and definitely go see them at RippleFest II in Stockholm next month!

Saint of the Day – 6 September – St Magnus of Füssen – Religious Priest, Monk, Abbot, Missionary, Spiritual student of Saint Columban and Saint Gall at Arbon (part of modern Switzerland) (Died in c 666? or 722? at the monastery at Füssen, Bavaria (in modern Germany) of natural causes).   Patronages – against caterpillars,• against hail or hailstorms,• against lightning,• against snakes,• against vermin,• for protection of crops.
St Magnus of was both a monk and a missionary. An interesting story involves him bringing reconciliation between St Gall and his master St Columban.   He is also venerated as one of the Holy Helpers invoked in time of plague such as the Black Death.
Monk of St Gall Magnus was a monk at St Gall.   One moving story involving him is that, on learning of the death of Columbanus whom Gall had refused to accompany to Bobbio in Italy, Gall sent Magnus to pray at Columbanus’s grave.   Magnus returned with St Columbanus’s staff which on his deathbed Columbanus had instructed to be given to Gall as a gesture of reconciliation in the quarrel which a few years before had separated them.   Magnus is said to have succeeded Gall after his death.
Missionary Invited by a priest of Augsburg, Magnus went with the support of Bishop Wichbert of that diocese to preach to the pagan people of the Allgäu region of Bavaria.   When he was left alone, Wichbert sent some young clerics to help him and these formed a monastic community later known as Sankt-Mung at Füssen, in Bavaria. Magnus helped the locals clear the land for cultivation and began a mining industry in a nearby mountain.
Death and influence
Magnus died after 26 years of missionary work and his relics were returned to St Gall. He is usually represented as treading on serpents.   He is also named as one of the fourteen Holy Helpers invoked against storms, insects, dragons and other disasters, such as the Black Death.

Ancient Women Shaman of Ireland: Goddesses of Prophecy and Omens
READ LATER
The Celtic scholar Nora Chadwick notes that in Irish mythology the prophetess Fedelm tells Queen Medb that she has been in the land of Alba learning the art of the Filidect. Medb asks if she has learned Imbas Forosnai, and when told yes, Medb asks Fedelm if she will look into her future to see how she will prosper. She then chants her prophecy in the form of a poem. According to many scholars, the name "Fedelm" itself means "prophetess" and is said to derive from the proto-Celtic stem wēd- / wid- "to know, to see".

Shaman Warriors Idolized as Goddesses
Also, from Irish mythology, when the wise warrior woman, Scathach, prophesies the life of the hero, Cú Chulainn, she speaks in Imbas Forosnai. Scathach is also considered a goddess of the dead by some scholars, which points to a shamanic origin.
The Goddess Badb is also a goddess of prophecy and omens. She appears before battles to predict death through her trance-like cries. And, of course, the Morrigan is the most famous seer and prophetess of all from these old Irish texts.
As we can see, all of the attributes of shamanism were well established in Irish tradition by the time these stories were given their Christian makeover by later monks.

How the Shaman Communed with Nature to Receive Powers
One wonders, when looking at comparable cultures, just what was left out of their recordings considering their view of women at the time. Could this be a reason for the scarcity of mentions of Irish women shaman in the Christian controlled texts?
In his History of Ireland, Geoffrey Keating wrote:
The druids used the hides of bulls offered in sacrifice for divination and the acquisition of wisdom. And many are the ways in which they acquired wisdom, such as looking at their own images in water, or gazing at the clouds of heaven, or listening to the noise of the wind, or the chattering of birds.

The Clash Between Christian Monks and Women Shaman
All of these practices would have been considered demonic by the Christian monks of Ireland, so they were certainly the victim of censure and erasure.
Another intriguing link between Irish women shaman and the Nordic wise-women, the Volur, occurs in the old Irish text the Cogadh Gaedhel re Gaillaibh . In this case the woman shaman is a Volur seer named Otta and she used the church at Clonmacnoise for her oracle workings. She would seat herself in a high chair upon the altar where she would enter her trance states. Chair amulets and ritual staffs have been found at many of the graves of these shamanic women in Scandinavia. There has also been a Volur staff found in Ireland at Kilmanham. Some of the burials have found women riding the staffs in the manner of a broom and many have been found decorated with runes and magical symbols.
Poulnabrone portal tomb, Ireland (Kglavin / Public domain )
A commonality regarding the burial of women shaman is how a large rock was placed upon their remains. It is only relatively recently that archaeologists are finally acknowledging the legacy and standing of these powerful women and their importance in ancient societies as well as the magical and shamanic function of the items they were buried with.

Evolution of the Pagan Ways’ Demise
Of course, this tradition continued with time. The names of these women changed, and their treatment also changed as the church grew stronger and the indigenous, pagan ways were demonized.
It seems legitimate, then, to look again at the goddesses and women shaman in the ancient Irish texts and ask if perhaps their appearance masks a much more widespread lineage and tradition. Could it be that a matriarchal spiritual ancestry is the source of many of these accounts and might the scant references be an attempt to extinguish the importance and power of women in ancient Ireland?
Sheela na gigs’ sculpture, found at the archaeological site of Lepenski Vir in Serbia (mazbln / CC BY-SA 3.0 )
What do the ‘Sheela na gigs’ Symbolize?
Recent reappraisal of the figures called ‘Sheela na gigs’ may offer some evidence of this. Until quite recently the academic consensus, while leaving some small room, tended to favor the idea that Sheela na gigs had been created by the Normans around the 11th century. There was always a difficulty with this for a number of reasons.
Sheela na gigs have been found in high numbers in Ireland, as well as Western Europe. This seemed to play into the Norman hypothesis.  It was only after later comparative scholarship in anthropology and archaeology that researchers realized that the archetype of the Sheela na gig could be found worldwide.
The ancient 'Foremother' figure found at Lepenski Vir, Siberia has been dated to roughly 6500 BC.

Megalithic Mounds – An Extension of the Sheela na gig
She was the most prominent goddess found at this site and she seems to have been associated with wombs, water, and birth. Many archaeologists also now see megalithic mounds as having a womb-like ritual purpose, perhaps indicating a shamanic re-birthing process.
Marija Gimbutas has also written about the correlations between the Sheela na gig figure and the frog goddess of Egypt, Heqet, who was also a protector of pregnant women and birth.

Symbols of Regeneration and Protection
This image may even date back further to the Palaeolithic where we have bone engravings of frog/ toad women. These carvings are interpreted to represent regeneration.
Seeing the Sheela na gig as a representation of a goddess who was a protector of women would certainly seem to make sense and link to the hypothesis of an ancient Irish matriarchal tradition. Not only do we have a direct relationship to ancient goddess carvings, but to a goddess who has been documented as being specifically evoked by women.
But if Christianity wanted to erase this knowledge why would they have placed representations of this pagan goddess on their buildings?

The Sheela na gig Attempts to Evade Suppression by the Church
Today, we have a wider understanding about the repression of wise-woman traditions in their many manifestations. All over the world, from witch trials to the wiping out of indigenous cultures, there has been a suppression of women shaman, sorceresses, and the older earth goddesses themselves.
The monotheistic aversion to the expression of women’s power and sexuality is a reason Sheela na gig’s may have been placed within church structures. It would be a way in which to visually curtail this power and assert its ‘sinfulness’. In other words, imprisoning the image of women’s power within the church symbolically represented the church’s victory over the goddess.
Pope Gregorius I dictating the gregorian chants (Hartker of Sankt-Gallen / Public Domain )
Pope Gregory Commands - Curb the Attacks Against the Pagans
We actually have a historical precedent for this deliberate suppression of older, pagan gods and goddesses.
In a letter sent by Pope Gregory in 500 AD, Christian missionaries and monks are told to curb the violent attacks against pagans and their places of worship. They are instructed to instead Christianize the sacred sites and swap pagan idols for Christian saints. This would indicate that a process was in place to change the meaning of idols from representing the more ancient gods and goddesses to something else entirely.

The Shamanic Practices Experience Survival and Rediscovery
Over the course of time these deities were banished to the fringes of cultures. In Ireland the Bean Feasa or ‘wise woman’ managed to survive and continue the legacy of indigenous shamanic practices but the ancestral connections were cut through the rewriting of Irish history by arriving monks. Remnants remain though, and by connecting the attributes of prophecy and the association with ancient sites, comparative anthropology is beginning to rediscover the original shamanic women of Ireland.

Gregor Maria Hanke OSB (* 2.

Swedish Doomers VOKONIS Share New Single Ahead of RippleFest Sweden!
~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~
Tumblr media
What a way to start the week, with brand new music from VOKONIS!   It's hardly a secret that we're fans of the band. After all, they're making their first appearance in North America at Doomed & Stoned Festival in October. One month before that, they'll be joining a damned impressive bill for RippleFest Sweden II. Ahead of the big event, which takes place September 7th and 8th at Copperfield's in Stockholm, we're debuting a new single by each of the bands featured on the bill, starting with the progressive doomers from Borås. You'll be able to download each single the day after we premiere it here.
"It's a somewhat transitional song for us," singer/guitarist Simon Ohlsson says of the massive seven-minute-plus single before us. "We're showcasing our best doom while offering up a varied and progressive feel. I also believe I've done some of my best solos yet on this track!"
Vokonis are about to make a leap forward in their evolution as a band and we dispatched executive editor Melissa Marie to ask Simon all about it, so be sure and check out the interview below and turn up the volume loud as Simon, Jonte, and Emil bring us the roaring "Celestial Embrace."
Give ear...
RippleFest Sweden II

Interview with Vokonis Frontman Simon Ohlsson
  By Melissa Marie
  Photographs by Robert Hellström
Hey, Simon, thanks again for visiting with us. I’d like to first talk about 'The Sunken Djinn' (2017). This album is certainly more dynamic and far more transparent than your debut 'Olde One Ascending' (2016). Did you guys really set out to prioritize and improve your production quality on this album?
Hey Melissa! Thanks for having me. A pleasure as always! Personally, I think our first record Olde One Ascending is very raw. We had only been playing for a few months when we recorded it. So it’s a special record in that sense. I think that’s a good way to keep progressing, write a bunch of songs, record them and let them go and focus on the next thing.
So when we set out to write The Sunken Djinn we knew what we wanted to do differently. I think it’s more focused and direct in terms of songwriting. As you say, it’s also more of a hi-fi experience. That was our first collaboration recording new material with Joona at Studio Underjord. So we kind of developed this bond and for every recording we did with Joona, the better it sounded. He’s just got an ear for what we want out of a record.
Olde One Ascending by Vokonis
You released 'Olde One Ascending' on Ozium Records and at some point, ended up signed with my all-time favorite underground label, Ripple Music. How did you end up with Todd Severin and company?
Yes! Todd really is the man. We actually got linked together by one of the best podcasters that deals in heavy music here in Sweden, Magnus Tannergren of Into The Void Radio. He knows Todd from a while back and he’s always on the lookout for bands. So when he saw us he gave us a great recommendation that landed us a spot over at Ripple. We are very honored to be part of the family, that’s for sure.
The Sunken Djinn (Single) by Vokonis
How important is artwork to you, as a band? Both the artwork on 'Olde One Ascending' and 'The Sunken Djinn' is very interesting and not something you always see in doom metal territory. Even the artwork for “The Sunken Djinn” and “Blood Vortex” singles are something that looks like they might come from a band like Entombed, which I think it very cool. I love Entombed by the way. Now that you’ve released the new track for “The Derelict Eyes” I can also say that I find the artwork is so unique.
I do love death metal and graphic art! That style is something that has spoken to me since way before I started playing doom. I guess it carries over well stylistically.
Tessa Najjar handles the art for our albums. For us it’s very important to paint a picture. It’s so important I think for a lot of bands in the scene. And I believe that Tessa’s style works very well with our music. We generally present to her a concept and just let her do her thing. If she comes to a crossroad with the piece, we’ll discuss in what direction we should go together. It’s a great partnership.
Kyrre Bjurling have handled art for us too. He’s a very special person to us since we found a fan-made picture for when we had released "The Sunken Djinn" as a single. We reached out to him and he helped us make that piece of fan-art as the cover art for the Ripple Music 7” single. That’s why our community is so cool!
Doomed & Stoned in Sweden by Doomed & Stoned
Speaking of “The Derelict Eyes,” I believe this is likely your fastest song to date. Do you feel putting this track on the 'Doomed & Stoned in Sweden' compilation was a bold move? You know people are bound to complain when bands take new directions, although sometimes I wonder if this occurs mainly in America. Do you feel that Swedes are more musically open minded than Americans? How has the general response been to this track?
Yes this is our fastest song. We wrote it in a period of us not really knowing where to go next. So we wrote something entirely different. Because I’m a big prog-lover. I don’t really care what style I’m listening to as long as it’s good. So that song was very important in our progression. Elements of “The Derelict Eyes” will definitely be used going forward. We have had great reception on the song. Our new label, The Sign Records, was so surprised when we sent it to them, they were like “Have you been sitting on this song for over a year? It’s killer! We gotta get it out now!” So that made me laugh a lot haha! Seeing their initial reaction gave me confidence in the song as well. I’m my own worst critic.
I don’t know if swedes are more open minded as a lot of my favorite bands that I am continuously inspired by are American. My thoughts are that if you dig a band such as Monolord, you probably like Entombed, right? And I’d love for Monolord to do a fast song. They’d pull that off with grace, I’m sure.
We’re now past the halfway mark in 2018. Any favorite albums of the year so far?
I have a few yes! Weedpecker came out with a great album right after the New Year. I’ve listened to that a lot. I know that SVVAMP released a great follow-up to their first album just now. My friends in Fungus Hill released what’s to me one of the best albums this year, Cosmic Construction on Proxima B. Also, we have Spiral Skies that delivered an album that sounds like I wish Ghost would sound. I always love to listen to new music. And I mainly pick up inspiration from bands doing something else than heavy fuzz-stuff.
Tumblr media
I understand you are quite the gear junkie. Tell us about your setup. Favorite guitar? Preferred strings? The pedal you refuse to live without? Your amp setup?
Is it that evident? We are huge gear nerds and we’re always looking for ways to reach that tone that you have in your mind. I haven’t been using them live but my favorite guitar is the Jazzmaster. They’re kind of odd birds in heavy music but I can make it fit and I plan on using them extensively going forward. I usually use Elixir 0.13-0.52 in a C standard tuning. I like how it feels crisp and tight. Not to floppy and boomy. If that makes sense.
I refuse to perform without my Black Arts Toneworks Pharaoh. That’s just the best fuzz pedal I know. It can do basically everything you want in the realm of muff-style fuzz. So it goes very well with our music. Regarding amps I have two of them. And they’re actually my dream amps. Ever since I started out playing guitar, I wanted a Marshall JMP 2203. I got hold of one last year and I love it so much. It’s got that grind that I’ve been searching for. I also got an Orange OR100, the other dream amp for me. It’s thick and perfect for playing with single coils as it’s always beefy and never shrill sounding. These two are gonna do the bulk of the work on our new album.
I follow Vokonis constantly on Facebook and see that you have a signature guitar with Boult guitars. How did all that come to be?
Yes! Chris reached out to me after he noticed me using another Boult guitar. I always had this thing for Yamaha SGs and I still do. So he did a Yama style guitar which carries the name The Djinn. Pretty cool, huh?
The heavy metal scene in Sweden is overwhelming, just to say the least. Who are your favorite Swedish metal gods?
That’s gotta be Opeth. I love them with a passion and they got me into heavy music. I can listen to their discography over and over and not get tired of it. The way they’ve transformed themselves time and time again is beyond me. I always get a kick out of listening to them. Then there’s Skraeckoedlan. They’re probably my favorite band in the realm of stoner/doom/sludge.
Tumblr media
Let’s talk about the invitation you received to be a part of the Planet of Doom movie. Did you write an entirely new song for it? That must be a massive honor!
That was so insane. I had been aware of the project for a few years before we got an invitation, so when David messaged me asking if we could put together a song we jumped on it. Feels kind of insane even now when it’s out there. Tim helped me with the lyrics just to get the story across. It was certainly the first time I wrote lyrics with someone from the other side of the planet. So yes, to sum it up, we are very honored to be part of it. It’s like a love letter to the whole genre. To be part of that select few is a special feeling.
Speaking of collaborations with Ripple Music, you have a new track titled “Celestial Embrace” on 'Skull Mountain' (2018). Did you write this specifically for this vinyl release?
Todd of Ripple Music asked us if we wanted to be on a compilation. So we became linked at an early stage. More than a year ago. And we had been started writing two songs after we had recorded The Sunken Djinn. We wanted to do something different and try to convey that we’re going to do some different stuff. I think that we got to showcase some of that in “Celestial Embrace” Very proud of that song.
The Sunken Djinn by Vokonis
I hear we can expect a new full-length Vokonis record in the not so distant future. What can you tell us about it?
We are headed into Studio Underjord in August, actually, so it looks like there’ll be at least a single out this fall. Then we’re going to release that album sometime in 2019 on The Sign Records. It’s too early to say dates and such but it’s coming for sure. It’s very different from our previous material. We have more clean passages and Jonte is singing almost half of the record. We had a different approach while writing it, previous albums was mostly my writing. Now I came up with a riff/idea and we did a lot more work on it. So it’s not nearly the same as it was when it was just an idea. In my mind, it’s the most Vokonis-sounding thing from us yet. As we put ourselves into this album more than ever before.
Of course, I must mention that, in addition to Ripple Fest in September, you'll be headlining at this year’s Doomed & Stoned Festival in October. As you recall, we tried to get you guys to come out last year, but the stars just didn’t align the way we wanted. Patience always pays off and 2018 is the year!
We couldn’t be happier! Finally we’ll be able to come to the US and play! Seriously, though, this is what makes the scene so special. It feels kind of close-knit and small even though you’re from the US and I’m from Sweden. I can’t wait!
Thanks for chatting with us once again. We’ll see you on stage!
Thank you! Always a pleasure.

Ozone Mama Get Ready to Shake Up RippleFest II
~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~
Tumblr media
Photograph by Eve Mate
At the start of the year, we introduced you to OZONE MAMA. Like many of you, I'm cautious about new music. There's the gut feeling one has heard it all before, but Ozone Mama popped out of the heavy underground as a genuine surprise. Blending the feel-good hard rock vibes with a strong heavy metal sensibility, the Hungarian band can't help but lift your spirits.
The Budapest five-piece has been steadily rising in the collective consciousness of heavy music fans and I'm frankly jealous of you Europeans who get to see them live! Hopefully they'll cross the waters before too much time. Now, as Ozone Mama readies to rumble RippleFest II in Stockholm this weekend, Doomed & Stoned is pleased to share the radio edit of my favorite song from 'Cosmos Calling' (2018 - Ripple Music): "High Ride."

Craneium Share New Song Ahead of RippleFest!
~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~
Tumblr media
As we inch ever nearer to RippleFest II in Stockholm, Doomed & Stoned continues to reveal new music from the attending bands. To start the week, we present the world premiere of a new single by Finnish foursome CRANEIUM. If they're a newer name to you, it's not because they're a new band. No, these guys have been stealing minds and reaping souls for the better part of the decade.
In the event you missed their incredible debut LP, 'Explore The Void' (2015), you'll thank yourself for going back and giving it a spin. Andreas Kaján (guitar, vox), Martin Ahlö (guitar, vox), Joel Kronqvist (drums), and Jonas Ridberg (bass) have concocted their own compelling blend of fuzzy stoner rock with a doom metal back.
Tumblr media
Now signed to Ripple Music, Craneium are sharing the first single from their forthcoming second LP. "Manifest" is a bittersweet number that conjures a picture of the rising sun on an open road, riding away from the past to embrace some unknown future. The vocals, sung over the steady wheels of a desert rock beat, cement this melancholy mood. The 5-minute track ends with a gorgeous guitar solo that hints of better days to come. It will be available for free download on Tuesday here.
