Some highlights from the J. Willis Sayre Collection of Theatrical Photorgraphs, a theater critic in the first half of the 20th Century that saved tens of thousands of promo photos used by theatrical agencies to solicit the actors' services. (The comedians' photos are a lot more entertaining than the dramatists', whose photos are all just boring headshots.)

Based in Los Angeles, Sayre Gomez often employs techniques borrowed from Hollywood set painting and commercial advertising to heighten the sense of lifelikeness in his paintings. In 3 Oracles, Gomez’s depiction of a vacant big-box store renders the shifting forces of the consumer economy in exacting, photo-realistic detail. The three appliance brands represented on the store’s façade, DieHard, Craftsman, and Kenmore, were all formerly owned by Sears Corporation, a retail giant that filed for bankruptcy in 2018.
Gomez recently co-curated the Feed the Streets Benefit Show at Sebastian Gladstone in Los Angeles. The opening is tomorrow evening (7/13) from 6-9pm and the exhibition will be on view until 8/3/24.
The group exhibition includes work by- Alfonso Gonzalez Jr. , Andrew Park, Bennet Schlesinger, Bryan Ruiz, Calvin Marcus, Chad Murray, Eddie Martinez, Emma McMillan, Evan Holloway, Greg Ito, G.V. Rodriguez, Jaime Muñoz, Jake Longstreth, Jonas Wood, Josh Smith, JPW3, Julia Yerger, Juliana Halpert, Justin Caguiat, Kalan Strauss, Mario Ayala, Max Hooper Schneider, Mungo Thomson, Nick Angelo, Nick Clark, Nihura Montiel, Richard Tinkler, Ryan Preciado, Sam Moyer, Sayre Gomez, Sterling Ruby, timo fahler, and Tristan Unrau.
All proceeds benefit Feed the Streets and their ongoing mission of colecting donated food, hygiene products, clothing, and educational items for hand to hand distribution in Los Angeles and New York. Feed the Streets also provides athletic and creative resources for underserved youth.

Description
A beautifully designed, full-color collection of paper dolls created by Zelda Fitzgerald, lovingly compiled by her granddaughter, Eleanor Lanahan.Born in Montgomery, Alabama, Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald has long been an American cultural icon. A Southern belle turned flapper, Zelda was talented in dance, painting, and writing but lived in the shadow of her writer husband F. Scott Fitzgerald?s success. The golden couple of the Jazz Age, Zelda and her husband moved around?from hotels to rented villas to apartments in Paris?and Zelda always brought along her paints. Few people know she painted at all, and fewer still know she made paper dolls. But throughout her life, Zelda created dolls, whenever she could, in private. By design, paper dolls are delicate, fragile, and destined for destruction at the hands of children. Zelda?s dolls began as playthings for her daughter, Scottie, born in 1921. Fortunately, Zelda continued to make figures after Scottie outgrew them, first of their family and

ISLAM 101: SPIRITUALITY IN ISLAM: PART 87
The Content of Miftāḥ al-ghayb in the Context of Metaphysics Era
Part 2
However, it leads to a problem in the comprehension of existence and the truth. The problem is that nothing can be understood with its absolute existence or in terms of its haqīqa (mystical truth). By focusing on this problem, Qunawī, like other muhaqqis, also focuses on “nafs al-emr (thing in itself)”, which is one of the fundamental issues in metaphysics thinking. According to Qunawī, nafs al-emr is the collection of all different decrees and cases that are realized or not realized in spiritual-logical-sensual cognizance.
Therefore, authentic marifah can be or cannot be known through wisdom and exploration. In this context, Qunawī also mentions the char- acteristics of authentic marifah. According to him, thinking about something can- not penetrate beyond it, it is not perfect and complete. Therefore, authentic marifah, true and sound knowledge should be obtained via means of knowledge and suitable conditions, which are in line with the quality mentioned.
Like many muhaqqiq, Qunawī thinks that the condition for the realization of knowledge is to find a connection/suitability between what is known and un- known. Qunawī bases this connection rule on the analysis principle which he ex- presses “Nothing can be known with something other than it and its being different or opposite” and relates the knowability of God with each entity’s relation to the level of divinity. As a matter of fact, created beings have existence as facsimiles in Haqq’s knowledge before they come into existence. This existence (thing’s existence in Haqq’s knowledge) procures the connection we have expressed above. Therefore, the connection that is expressed as the condition for knowledge is also an important issue in Qunawī’s Miftāḥ al-ghayb. Naturally, we see that Qunawī largely discusses this issue in his work. It must be noted here that the existence and knowledge areas related to the divine science, in other words, the ontological and epistemological aspects, are methodologically intertwined in Miftāḥ al-ghayb. Nevertheless, the existence of the entity in Haqq’s knowledge is it’s most basic onto-logical unit and this existence enable the connection it needs to reach knowledge. In other words, the basic areas of “thing”, ontology and epistemology, were synthesized as in the example given. More clearly, the essences in the intertwining of these two fields of study were put forward by Qunawī in a principled way that explains the methodology of the divine science. That is why this work has an important place in the history of Sufism.
The final chapter of Miftāḥ al-ghayb, which corresponds to almost one-third of the book, was devoted to the issue of Insan-i Kamil (perfect human being). How- ever, Qunawī does not discuss perfect human beings in their classical meaning, but discusses humanbeing in general. He regards humanbeing as ontological beings and explains all stages in their coming into being. In other words, in this section, humanbeing is examined from “existence” point of view. As it can be understood from the information provided in this article so far, Miftāḥ al-ghayb is not a book written for layman. On the contrary, it was compiled for people who have acquired a certain amount of knowledge and experience in sayr wa sulūk (spiritual journey) and wisdom.
This is expressed by Qunawī as follows:
“This book is not written for the layman and not even for distinguished people. This is written for the highly knowledgeable people (khavāss al-khavās). These people benefit from this book before reaching their aims during their spiritual journey; they remember their states at the beginning of their journey. Thus, they reach spiritual maturity and help others reach maturity, thank Allah, and wish their discernment to be increased. Haqq increase their discernment.”

Zelda Fitzgerald: Writer, Muse, and… Painter?
“For decades, Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald was known primarily as F. Scott Fitzgerald’s wife and highly quotable sidekick, the original Roaring Twenties flapper and model for many of her husband’s fictional heroines. With the women’s movement in the late 1960s came a resurgence of interest in Zelda’s own talents as a writer of fiction and as a dancer. But until recently, few people were aware of her artwork, although she produced more than one hundred cityscapes of the places where she lived, illustrations for fairy tales and biblical stories, and paintings of figures and flowers. For me, though—her granddaughter—the showstoppers were always her paper dolls. ...”

Who Was Alice Beal Parsons?
A chance find, many years ago, of an old book called The Mountain, by Alice B. I have an additional 19th-c-France fandom and in case it is as new to you as it was to me, let me introduce Point of Honor. It is about the ongoing dispute of cavalry officers Feraud and d’Hubert. They are my new lens for Napoleon nerding. They cope with societal fuckery, political fuckery, geo-political fuckery, and cataclysmic regime change, and take it all out on each other with slashy fencing. Everything they are wearing here is illegal, like much of their conduct. Enjoy.
• There is a movie (The Duellists, Ridley Scott) … • based on a short novel (The Duel or The Point of Honor, Joseph Conrad) … • based on real guys (Dupont & Fournier).
My universe is the book* plus influence from history. My favorite point of departure from canon is: Adèle is not cool with being betrothed to a stranger twenty-something years too old for her — until (this bit is canon) the said stranger returns at the crack of dawn, with dirt on his back, from a witness-free woodland ~duel~ that he refuses to talk about. Her fiancé is probably too dumb to realize what is going on between himself and his adversary, but that can be rectified.
* The 1908 McClure copy (linked above), to be nit-picky. The republication in the collection A Set of Six edits a line so that instead of my favorite virgin-d’Hubert it has merely romantically-uninvested-d’Hubert. Just let me have this okay. (Plus this is the copy with glamorous illustrations by Sayre Groesbeck.) (The uniforms are not historically accurate but their vibe is.)

task 001 || rosalie’s flat; strife edition
under the brightest street lamp in knightsbridge, london, the sayre’s owned a victorian facade townhouse that henry used when traveling for work. however, rosalie made it her permanent residence over the summer when she took the time to redecorate every room more to her tastes. this essentially meant more color, more life, and a little more luxury.
when rosalie found strife and brought her back to stay at her home, she lived the first week off the nicest couch. it wasn’t like the home strife grew up in at all. everything felt fresh and new and fine to touch. there were no ghosts hiding behind the corners, but it was still family. it felt right if she couldn’t go home to be here. so she asked to move in, and rosalie agreed only to discover a new door in the house the next morning with an owl staring back at her.
strife’s room didn’t necessarily follow the more nouveau art deco design motif of the rest of the townhouse. it was decorated in deep, jewel tone plush fabrics. that little conjured room had an old soul. with dark wood floors covered over with fur carpets and littered with stacks of books. paintings of watercolor and oil hang over the walls in ornate frames. collectibles that litter every surface are slowly sneaking their way out to the rest of the house as well.

As a little celebration of the new year, here’s engine #2021, built in 1917 by the Lehigh Valley Railroad’s Sayre Yards, named after the company’s chief engineer and first Superintendent, Robert H. Sayre. The yards in were located in Waverly, New York and the adjoining company town of Sayre, Pennsylvania.
This glass negative image of the steam locomotive is undated, but would have been captured between its construction and April, 1948, when it was scrapped. It part of Hagley Library’s collection of Locomotives and views of Mauch Chunk contact photographs and negatives (Accession 1969.092).
