#OTD in 1960: Ruby Bridges became the first Black child to attend William J. Frantz Elementary School after a court order mandated the desegregation of schools in New Orleans, Louisiana.
At just six years old, Ruby and her story became a symbol of the civil rights movement 🤎

On November 14, 1960, 6-year-old Ruby Bridges became the first African American child to integrate an all-white elementary school in the South. Ruby and her mother were escorted into the William Frantz Elementary School by four federal marshalls. This escort continued all year. She did not miss one day of school. #OnThisDay

The phrase “defund the police” has become a lasting reminder of Congress’s colossal failure to address criminal justice reform. Even though the majority of Americans agreed that George Floyd’s death was a symptom of “an underlying racial injustice problem,” Congress failed to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, which would enact structural changes to policing, introduce a method for transparency, and accountability.
So, why did “defund the police” get so much bad press when conservatives have been defunding public schools for years without so much as a peep from the other side of the aisle? Because Democrats have a horrible habit of responding to the right’s positions rather than taking on bad-faith talking points. But, letting conservatives’ hypocrisy dominate the narrative is dangerous. The debate over “defund the police” was never about public safety; it was about police controlling Black people in their communities.
Likewise, defunding public schools isn’t about providing parents with “choice.”
White students are not short on options for pursuing their education. America’s first school was whites-only, and only through Black parents’ advocacy over generations did that dynamic change. Attacking public school funding is a blatant attempt to deny Black, Latino, and other marginalized students equal opportunities as White students.
Approximately 64% of Americans live paycheck-to-paycheck and can’t possibly afford to send their children to private schools. Conservatives are trying to find a way around Brown v Board of Education, where they can still provide separate and unequal opportunities for Black students.

Supreme Court Bracket
Remember that this is a silly Tumblr poll, and these two things are not actually in conflict. So don't get too heated in the notes.

The New Deal. National Labor Relations Board v Jones & Laughlin Steel Corporation was a US labor law case. It declared that the National Labor Relations Act of 1935 was constitutional. It effectively preserved the New Deal, which was being pursued by US President Roosevelt in reaction to the Great Depression. Previous Supreme Court cases, unlike NLRB v. Jones & Laughlin, had invalidated New Deal statutes.
School Desegregation. The case Brown v. Board of Education the Court declared state laws establishing separate public schools for black and white students to be unconstitutional. It stated that ''separate educational facilities are inherently unequal.''

It’s here! The resource I had the wonderful opportunity to bring to fruition while a Graduate Assistant at the Delaware Historical Society for the 2021-2022 school year has been announced. Click here for a pdf download of the guide. Here is a blurb about the guide:
The scope of materials ranges from the 17th century to the present day, covering topics including slavery and the Civil War, school desegregation, the Civil Rights Movement, and African American social, religious, and political life in Delaware.
This resource guide will be updated as the Society acquires new collections from across the state and can be used alongside its existing online catalogs and digital collections site.
Enjoy!

okay, im working on one of those video essays and its NOT the one i wanted 2 make its so much more important. however. i need to know, just as a general thing for my own interest
im not gonna give my whole essay here i just want a vibe check.
TO CLARIFY:
-this isnt a discussion about fandom racism, thats a monster of its own. this is about the on screen interactions between ponies and other species in their world as well as between the pegasi/unicorns/earth ponies themselves
-this isnt specifically about the mane 6, more about the general Pony Culture
-this also isnt about whether or not you think the show writers are racist/what their opinions on racism might be as interpreted through the show
-literally just about the horses in the show (and maybe the comics) and how they act/treat each other
-also not trying 2 cancel the show or start shit, really just curious abt the general convo around that whole thing
-this isnt serious but also im not joking

In 1957, a significant event took place when Dorothy Counts, a 15-year-old African American student, bravely embarked on her first day at Harry Harding High School in Charlotte, North Carolina, becoming the first African American student in the newly desegregated school. However, her time at the school was marred by four days of relentless harassment that posed a serious threat to her safety.
As a result, her parents made the difficult decision to withdraw her from the school. Their intention was to ensure that Dorothy did not generalize all white people based on her traumatic experience at Harry Harding High School.
youtube
Consequently, she was sent to live with her aunt and uncle in Yeadon, Pennsylvania, where she completed her sophomore year at an integrated public school. In contrast to her ordeal at Harry Harding High School, her experience in Yeadon was pleasant and more inclusive. In 2006, a turning point occurred when Dorothy received an email from William "Woody" Cooper, who courageously admitted to being one of the boys depicted in the famous photograph.
youtube
Cooper expressed his sincere desire to apologize. They arranged to meet for lunch, where Cooper humbly asked for forgiveness. Dorothy graciously responded by saying, “I forgave you a long time ago, this is opportunity to do something for our children and grandchildren." They agreed to share their story and from there, did many interviews and speaking engagements together.

Whenever I write Yellowjackets fic that isn’t literally set in the present or the wilderness I have to do so much got damn research. Now I’m researching the prominence of 7-9, 7-8 and 5 or 6-8 transitional education from elementary to high school specifically on the east coast, to figure out what the likely set up of the Wiskayok school in between elementary and high school was in 1991. For some goddamn reason

“The Conservative effort to destroy public education began the day Brown v Board of Education said they must be integrated.”
“School choice” is a racist dogwhistle for re-segregation.
There should be no such thing as privatized or profitized education, and religious & private schools should not be funded with public tax dollars.

Quote
It will be a sad day for this country if students can safely attend their classes only under the protection of armed guards.
President Eisenhower, 1957
In September 1957, President Eisenhower contemplated the grim possibility of having to deploy Army troops and the Arkansas National Guard to enforce Court-ordered desegregation at Little Rock’s Central High School.
