Traditionally, the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which funds the annual budget and appropriations of the Department of Defense, passes Congress on a bipartisan basis. Since 1961 it has been considered must-pass legislation, as it provides the funding for our national security. For all that there is grumbling on both sides over one thing or another in the measure, it is generally kept outside partisanship. 

Late last night, House Republicans broke that tradition by loading the bill with a wish list from the far right. Republicans added amendments that eliminate all diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs in the Defense Department; end the Defense Department program that reimburses military personnel who must travel for abortion services; bar healthcare for gender transition; prevent the military academies from using affirmative action in admissions (an exception the recent Supreme Court decision allowed); block the Pentagon from putting in place President Biden’s executive orders on climate change; prevent schools associated with the Defense Department from teaching that the United States of America is racist; and block military schools from having “pornographic and radical gender ideology books” in their libraries.

House speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) tweeted: “We don’t want Disneyland to train our military. House Republicans just passed a bill that ENDS the wokism in the military and gives our troops their biggest pay raise in decades.” 

In fact, the events of last night were a victory for right-wing extremists, demonstrating that they hold the upper hand in the House. Representatives Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ) and Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA), both military veterans, expressed shock that so many Republicans voted to strip abortion protections from military personnel. “[T]hey will say, ‘this is a really bad idea,’ ‘this is not where the party should be going,’ ‘this is a mistake,’” Sherill said. “[W]ell then why did everyone but two people in the Republican conference vote for this really bad amendment?”

The bill passed by a vote of 219 to 210, largely along partisan lines. This year’s budget is $886 billion as the U.S. modernizes the military to compete with new threats such as the rise of China, and it provides a 5.2% increase in pay for military personnel. 

But Senate Democrats will not vote for it with the new partisan amendments and are working on their own measure. While there will be a conference committee to hammer out the differences between the two versions, McCarthy has offered a position on that committee to Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), one of the extremists. This is an unusual offer, as she is not on the House Armed Services Committee. 

House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) said: “Extreme MAGA Republicans have hijacked a bipartisan bill that is essential to our national security and taken it over and weaponized it in order to jam their extreme right-wing ideology down the throats of the American people.”

“We are not going to relent, we are not going to back down, we’re not going to give up on the cause that is righteous,” Representative Scott Perry (R-PA) said.

Representative Sean Casten (D-IL) summed up the vote today on Twitter. “The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) is the bill that funds all of our military operations. It is typically bipartisan and is about as serious as Congress gets. What weapons of war we fund, which allies we share them with, how we recruit. National security is a BFD. We can have our political debates about any number of issues but it is generally understood that when Americans are willing to sacrifice their lives to defend us, it’s time to check the crazies at the door. But today, the crazies won.

“They won first because [McCarthy] put the crazies in positions of power. But second because none of the “moderate” Republicans had the courage to stay the hell out of KrazyTown…. Is every member of the [House Republican Conference] a homophobic, racist, science denying lunatic? No. But the lesson of today is that the ones who aren’t are massive cowards completely unfit for any position of leadership. 

“There is space—and demand—for reasonable differences of opinion in our democracy. This isn’t about whether we agree. It’s about whether we can trust that—differences aside—we trust that we’ve got each other’s back if we ever find ourselves in a foxhole together. That’s usually a metaphor, conflating the horrors of war with the much lower-stakes lives that most of us are fortunate enough to lead. But today, the entire [House Republican Conference] told us—both literally and metaphorically—that they don’t give a damn about the rest of the unit.”

Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries is under fire following the resurfacing of a decades-old college opinion article that saw him defend his antisemitic uncle.

Jeffries, who took over the mantle of Democratic leadership after control of the House flipped to Republicans in last year's midterm elections, told The Wall Street Journal in 2013 that he only had "vague" memories of the controversy surrounding his uncle Leonard Jeffries, a college professor in Black Studies who in the early 1990s denounced "rich Jews" as puppet masters of the slave trade and claimed that Jews were orchestrating a "conspiracy" against Black Americans.

"I have a vague recollection of it," Jeffries said during the Wall Street Journal interview. "There was no internet during that era and I can't even recall a daily newspaper in the Binghamton, N.Y., area but it wasn't covering the things that the New York Post and Daily News were at the time."

However, an editorial penned by the future Democratic leader in 1992, when he was an undergraduate student at Binghamton University, suggests he was fully aware of the controversy while it was happening. The article, surfaced by CNN on Wednesday, features Jeffries offering a defense of his uncle and Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, while largely focusing on denouncing Black conservatives as "house negroes" and lamenting their acceptance by the "white media."

"Dr. Leonard Jeffries and Minister Louis Farrakhan have come under intense fire," Jeffries wrote at the time. "Where do you think their interests lie? Dr. Jeffries has challenged the existing white supremist educational system and long standing distortion of history. His reward has been a media lynching complete with character assassinations and inflammatory erroneous accusations."

Leonard Jeffries continued to make remarks that were denounced as antisemitic by groups like the Anti-Defamation League for many years after his nephew defended him, although he eventually lost his job at City University of New York following a series of legal battles. Other remarks by Leonard Jeffries reportedly include references to Jews as "dogs" and "skunks" hoping to "stink you all up."

Republicans pounced on Hakeem Jeffries following the publication of CNN's report, accusing the Democrat of being antisemitic himself while lashing out at him for previously brushing aside his uncle's controversy and for denouncing Black conservatives.

"Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, and now Hakeem Jeffries," the National Republican Congressional Committee tweeted. "Why are House Democrats so interested in giving a platform to anti-Semitic voices?"

"For years, House Democrat Leader Hakeem Jeffries has claimed he has only a "vague recollection" of his uncle's antisemitism. But CNN's @KFILE has the receipts — and Jeffries is on record DEFENDING both his uncle AND Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan," tweeted the RNC Research account.

Republican Congressman Byron Donalds of Florida called for Jeffries to "apologize for what he wrote in that article" and take part in a "debate about Black conservatism versus Black liberalism" during an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity on Wednesday.

Jeffries was also defended by some, with Democratic Representative Dean Phillips of Minnesota, who is Jewish, tweeting, "few Americans are more committed defenders of the Jewish community, and all communities subject to hate, than Hakeem Jeffries."

In a statement emailed to Newsweek, Jeffries spokesperson Christie Stephenson said that "Leader Jeffries has consistently been clear that he does not share the controversial views espoused by his uncle over thirty years ago."

"Leader Jeffries has been in public service for more than 16 years as a state legislator and Member of Congress," Stephenson continued. "His track record of bringing communities together and standing up for everyone speaks for itself."

Biden y McCarthy se reúnen cuando se acaba el tiempo para evitar un impago de EEUU

Far Right Republicans Off the Rails

LOS ANGELES (OnlineColumnist.com), Jan. 4, 2023.--Former House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), 57, lost another three  rounds of voting today for House Speaker, with three more Republican defecting from McCarthty.  Conservative House Republicans went over the deep end seeking first-term, 44-year-old Byron Donalds (R-Fl) as their new House Speaker choice showing that the Party needs to sanction GOP renegades.  It’s one thing to not support McCarthy, it’s another to throw support to a neophyte Congressman with no leadership experience.  McCarthy wants to press on with more votes but at some point the business of Congress must go on with a consensus candidate. Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.), 57, a friend of McCarthy, is waiting in the wings ready to serve as House Speaker should McCartthy not come up with the needed votes.  House Republicans are embarrassing themselves, the institution and the country.

Serving Florida’s 19th district since 2021, Donalds has no business serving as House Speaker or any other leadership position.  Whatever the objections to McCarthy, conservative Republicans have to get real about who can successfully lead the party in the next two years.  If the infighting doesn’t stop soon, Republicans will surely loose the House in the 2024 election.  Democrat Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), 52, a vocal member of the Jan. 6 House Select Committee and former manager in former President Donald Trump’s second impeachment trial, can control his glee, watching Republicans implode.  Whatever the objections to McCarthy, Republicans need to find a consensus candidate who can win the 218 GOP votes needed to become House Speaker.  McCarthy’s past ties to Trump but, more importantly, to old school Republicans politics, turns off House conservatives.

Even Donalds was surprised by the conservatives’ picking him to lead the House.  “I didn’t come to D.C. being interested in speaker of the House,” Donalds said.  “But I also understand part of my responsibility is to make sure our conference gets to a point where we are doing things in an effective and constructive way,” Donalds said, not ruling out his consideration.  Surely conservatives know that Donalds would not be a consensus candidate for House Speaker knowing his lack of leadership inexperience.  Conservatives must come up with a realistic alternative to McCarthy, someone with leadership experience capable to stepping into House Speaker.  Scalise is the former House Minority Whip since 2014 and incoming House Minority Leader.  No one is more qualified to replace McCarthy than Scalise to take over has House Speaker.  At some point, McCarthy must stop insisting he “earned” House Speaker.

McCarthy has a long history of gaffes and blunders, once admitting to Sean Hannity that the purpose of the House Benghazi Committee in 2015 was designed to hurt former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton’s chances of running for president in 2016.  McCarthy was a big supporter of Trump until his Nov. 8, 2020 loss to 80-year-old President Joe Biden.  Biden gloated yesterday that Republicans “need to get their act together” to pick a House Speaker.  Conservatives must get real that Donalds is not a consensus candidate for the job.  Only someone with leadership experience like Scalise can step into the House Speaker job without any hitches.  Donalds has a short history of backing Trump and his claims of election fraud in the 2020 election.  House GOP conservatives are proving that they can’t govern, picking someone like Donalds who lacks leadership experience.

McCarthy has made just enough enemies in the GOP to short-circuit his ability to get enough votes for House Speaker.  No GOP House Speaker candidate is perfect, all come with flaws on various issues.  But Scalise shows the consensus-building type that has less objections at this point than McCarthy.  Instead of conducting more votes on House Speaker, the GOP would spend their time more wisely meeting as a caucus to pick their next House Speaker.  More ballots without striking a deal will only make GOP leadership look in chaos.  McCarthy needs to get over the idea that he’s owed House Speaker by serving as House Minority Leader since 2018.  Leadership positions require consensus, not just seniority.  House conservative won’t get the change they’re looking or by picking someone who has no leadership background, who certainly won’t get enough votes on any future ballot.

McCarthy’s shortcomings must be measured by who else in the GOP caucus could get more consensus for the top leadership slot.  If McCarthy’s wants the job, he’s going to have to make the concessions necessary to placate conservatives, including on the rule “Motion to Vacate,” to remove a House Speaker by one vote. Currently Pelosi agreed to a Motion of Vacate” to five votes.  McCarthy could placate the conservative caucus by agreeing to a compromise.  But if McCartthy can’t get the 218 votes needed, he needs to throw his support behind another consensus candidate. Conservatives must get real that Donalds lacks the leadership experience to effectively lead the House GOP.  Neophyte House conservatives don’t have the experience to understand that things in Washingoton don’t change overnight.  Finding compromise in leaders and policy is the only way to get anything done.
