i didn't think i was going to make a post today, i've been under the weather for a while now 🌧️ and haven't really been making any substantial progress on anything as a result. i've been drawing, mostly. and no shit, i don't think i've spent this much time on my tablet since i was... fuck, sixteen? wild times.

but i dunno, i guess i just missed hanging out and wanted to share a bit of a WIP i talked about very briefly once before in a SSS (🐍) post, an alterous Dev/Niall (and pre-slash Simon/Baz) fanfic with the working title Niall vs the Amatonormative Agenda. i really like this fanfic. it started out as a runaway document where i could shove words when they didn't have anywhere else to go, and slowly turned into a canon compliant coming of age character study that follows Niall's POV exclusively from the Crucible ceremony to the Leavers ball. it's focused entirely on his life, his complicated relationship with Dev, and his friendship with Baz. i dunno if i'll ever post it in its entirety, but it is very near and dear to my heart these days.

Simon Snow is storming across the football pitch, flushed crimson and ripping at the fluffy inch of hair that peeks out below the brim of his boater, sparking along his forearms like a loose wire and steaming with so much magic that Niall starts all but going cross-eyed from it, he can feel it in his throat, acrid and sticky. He cups his palm over his mouth. “Baz!” Simon Snow shouts again, whipping around, his eyes cutting across the Wavering Wood’s gloomy treeline. Ceridwen, he looks like he’s gone mental. (And kind of like he’s about to cry.) “Give it back!” He spins, searching. He doesn’t find them. A noise like the growl of a small, rabid animal pinches from his narrow chest, and then he’s off. Sprinting in the direction of the drawbridge. Niall turns back around. “Baz Pitch?” “Grimm-Pitch,” Baz replies tersely. “You’re Dev’s cousin.” He blinks. “That’s correct.” “I’m their roommate.” Baz looks barely old enough to be at Watford, honestly. He still has one of those squished up little kid faces. His cheeks are puffy and round, his brow is shallow, his chin is short and flat. But he has a tall, straight nose like an adult, so he’s probably going to have a growth spurt sooner rather than later. Drop a layer of baby fat, shoot an inch and a half taller overnight. That’s how it went for Niall, at least. But then again, he’s older than he should be for a first year, he’ll turn thirteen in January before the end of Christmas break. “What have you done to the Chosen One now?” Niall asks, shifting to uncross his legs and stretch them out, moving his Magic Words textbook to lay open on his thighs. Baz settles down next to him, drawing his skinny knees up right to his shoulders with his arms tucked into the space between, flipping his wand back and forth from one hand to the other. His expression is blank—the kind of calculated, intentional blank that children shouldn’t know how to do—but his gaze is keen, almost feral. “Nothing he doesn’t deserve.” “You’re creepy.” “Are you going to tattle on me?” “No,” he says, after what is probably too short a moment of consideration, “I don’t really care. I just want to finish my homework.” “Well, good.” Baz purses his lips, looking Niall up and down with a single quick, deliberate flick of his eyes. (Grey, like a clean riverbank.) “Otherwise I would’ve had to spell you Six ways to Sunday.” “You couldn’t.” “Could too.” “Could not.” “I’m a Pitch.” “You’re eleven.”

♻️A scrapped idea for your current WIP

I was going to originally have John propose at Christmas but it was too cheesy and soon, even for them. I like the necklace better, it suited them more.

🤔What’s a story you’d love to write but haven’t even started yet?

Oh boy. I'd love to write one based on where I live but there's another writer doing one right now based in the same area, and I don't want to step on any toes. (what are the odds, out of the entire globe lol.) So I don't know. I've met a few retired military guys who are drawn to being outside and building careers in Search&Rescue after discharge. A lot of those skills are highly transferrable. This area is super remote and hikers go missing on the regular or boaters need to be rescued from the glacial water, etc. It attracts the "colourful 5%" as one old timer put it. More than one person has moved up here with the idea of starting a new life away from the consequences of the old. If you are someone who has maybe made some enemies, it might be of interest as a place to settle down. The landscape also can serve as a character of it's own, because if you get stuck out there without the proper tools or know-how you will die long before anyone finds you.

any thoughts on the ohio balloon disaster?

I've always thought the releasing of balloons to be an odd practice-- I mean it's just littering, albeit in the sky and then again in some other location later. Deciding to litter 1.5 million balloons at once seems like it would have obvious consequences, but then again Disney had previously done 1.2 balloons and nobody called that day a disaster.

So in 1986 United Way decided to break a record for number of balloons released into the sky. The Guinness Book of World Records has pretty much always just been a publicity stunt organization. Pay them enough money, they'll invent a record for you to break and then people will report on it. That's all it is. It's not like a real panel of experts measuring records or something. It's just dumb. It's publicity. United Way wanted publicity because they are a charity organization trying to drum up support and balloons seem like harmless fun.

So what happened? The balloons were released, and due to storm conditions, the helium balloons were sent back down to the ground before deflating. So rather than having a bunch of plastic falling from the sky, big bouncy balloons were fucking around all over Lake Eerie and the broader Cleveland area being a nuisance.

The "disaster" of the day is kind of overblown (pun intended). There was a traffic collision presumably from balloons distracting drivers, but nobody was hurt. Some horses got upset, but that's a daily problem for horses upon witnessing the world they live in from what I understand the creatures. The coast guard said the balloons made searching for a lost boat more difficult, and the boaters were eventually discovered drowned, but there is no evidence that a lack of balloons would have changed their fates. They had been missing since midnight the night before when a massive storm hit and they were out in their boat. They were almost definitely already dead.

Oh, and a local airport closed for 30 minutes, something that happens like five times a day in my experience of travel.

The United Way apparently considered the event a success, though they did not repeat it after that year.

In conclusion, my opinion on this balloon thing was that it resulted in some very cool pictures, a very weird day for some horses, and then thirty years later fodder for some people to write incendiary pieces for some reason (secret ohio haters? someone who agrees with me that helium balloons are stupid?) Why did anyone dig this up and dub it a disaster? No idea. But it certainly is a thing that happened.

Kaiba Brothers Lost at Sea? - Duelist Digest

Thousands of fans have congregated around Kaiba Corp’s main headquarters in anticipation for the Kaiba Brothers’ return from America. Most of them in particular are here in anticipation for Mokuba’s birthday celebrations this Friday on July 7th. 

Kaiba Corporation’s liaison had reported difficulties in reaching the jet earlier this morning, though this is attributed to a nearby storm system affecting the Pacific Ocean. KaibaCorp still anticipate both their CEO and vice-president’s arrival later tonight.  

Update: As of midnight 7/7/2023, there still has been no word of the Kaibas arriving.

Many have expressed concern for the brothers’ safety and are requesting the police to investigate for foul play, given KaibaCorp’s tumultuous history involving the control of the company.

Kaiba Brothers Missing: Tokyo Times

There has still been no sign of the Kaiba brothers as of July 8th 2023. Japan, America, and South Korea have all dispatched teams for a search and rescue in the Pacific Ocean. 

KaibaCorp reports that the jet the Kaiba Brothers are on is equipped with a lifeboat and floatation system in case of emergencies and that there were no distress signals sent prior to loss of contact. The current theory is electronic equipment failure. 

Other conflicting theories are also in play.

One of them casts doubt on Seto Kaiba’s ability to fly a jet, especially one that is believed to be experimental. 

Another theory is that boaters in the area report seeing a streak of light in the sky - and it is believed that it was the Blue Eyes Jet heading on a course that wasn’t towards Japan. Combined with that theory, local militant groups in the surrounding area have given a statement that they shot down the Jet with a surface-to-air missile.  

As of right now though, no wreckage or debris has been found. 

The Tokyo Times will keep Japan appraised during these tumultuous times.

On KaibaCorp Stocks : Forbes Japan

KaibaCorp closed at 19,000 yen from 18,000 yen today on 7/7/2023, a little over a 5% increase. This is surprising news given that most speculators were expecting the stock to tank after the CEO and vice-president’s mysterious disappearance over the Pacific Ocean. 

It is still unclear why KaibaCorp remains on the uptrend. The majority shareholder and CEO Seto Kaiba is known as the driving force of the R&D department, having developed both the hologram tech for the Duel Arenas and the more recently revealed Duel Disks. The vice-president Mokuba Kaiba meanwhile is known for handling the more everyday affairs of the company including its public relations and has popularity rivaling his brother’s in the Capumon and streaming communities. Losing either of them would result in severe instability in the company, much less losing both of them. 

Will KaibaCorp continue to remain on the rise? Many say no.

Kaiba’s mysterious disappearance after his visit to Domino City? The Solid Vision system got developed almost immediately afterwards, the foundation of holotech.  

Kaiba going reportedly comatose after Death-T? The 2nd-generation duel arenas.

Kaiba and his brother allegedly getting kidnapped during Duelist Kingdom? The prototype Duel Disk - which eventually became today’s Duel Disk - hologram technology with a flick of your wrist.

All you short sellers betting against Kaiba are going to really suffer for it. 

As for me, I bought quite a bit of stock, and I’m sure I’ll be laughing all the way to the bank. Don’t be stupid, go buy more KaibaCorp stock. Or at the very least don’t sell what you have. That’s my advice.
